- If you're a new tarantula owner, it's absolutely normal to be freaked out and nervous the first time you see your tarantula flip over on its back and shed its exoskeleton - a completely normal and routine part of a tarantulas' life cycle called molting.
I think one of the biggest mistakes we can make as new tarantula owners is being far too eager to intervene when our tarantulas are more than capable of going about their weird spider business with no help. Now of course, there is always a chance during a molt that things will not go well (it's an intense process) and you might need to help out. However, more often than not your tarantula is having a perfectly normal molt. In those cases, here's what you should do!

I've had dozens of moults now and every time I get that irrational OH MY GOD SHE'S DEAD feeling in my stomach until I see it's just a moult.

Thank you for this video it was very helpful for me. My pink toed tarantula just molted 2 days ago and I was extremely worried that he was starving because his abdomen looks very small anyways this video made me feel a lot better he's got water constantly so he will be okay and he molted pretty quickly less than 2 hours next time I will have to take a video cuz they are very fascinating! Little Frankie my tarantula is my third tarantula that I've gotten I am getting another one this week coming up it's going to be a blue Fang tarantula. Hey Patti :) Nice to see you again ! My spider from years ago (probably a B. hamorii) would sit on her molt. For days. Seriously, she'd harden up, while sitting on her molt. She'd then spin the molt in some silk and take it to "the trash" which was a corner of her enclosure she'd use to deposit food remains etc.... btw, looks like my baby GBB is spinning a molting mat AS WE SPEAK ! Her 2nd molt under my care. SO exciting !

Crazy enough, the first molt I got to experience watching(besides my tiny slings) was my Phormictopus sucking/eating it's molt. I'll never forget it and I was surprised because I had never heard that on any of the videos (or research) I watched years before being able to finally start keeping. Or I forgot if I did.

Ok, so I agreed to take on a tarantula with a buddy of mine and he’s going through some stuff and so I got Zeniba (that’s her name, I think it’s a her…) and this has been the first 24 hours I had her. She molted, I was so scared that she was dead, I called everywhere and watching this helped alleviate some of the anxiety. I was careful on checking on her because she’s kinda in new territory. New smells, different sounds. I don’t know what I am doing with her. So I started looking things up and this was just easier to follow. Seeing her upside down in the cage freaked me out. I couldn’t stop saying omg in pure panic. I didn’t know if moving her the way I did would injure her. I know I was being careful but I don’t know just how careful to be, and then I see her and her molt and I was just… I feel better now. I know she’s ok. So I can stop worrying.
I just got her yesterday evening. I was not ready for this. But I have to be now.
Yes it sounds like she was doing something totally normal!!! It's very scary the first time especially but it sounds like everything went ok. You are wonderful to care for her

My T's will take there molt out of their hide and drag it out into the enclosure somewhere. Except for my green bottle she leaves Her molt in her web Castle she has made. But yes great information love the channel thank you! With tarantulas patience is key

Thanks! I cut it myself with the help of UA-cam lol. I'm actually not sure if Spidey molts the same time. She molts so infrequently (every 2-3 yrs) that I can't even remember if there was a pattern lol. She will be due for another one soon so I'll pay attention this time! I think your slings hiding in the winter is totally normal - my sling was being super inactive the entire winter and stayed underground for months. But now that it's warming up both of my Ts are much more active.

My Pink Toe has molted twice since I got her a little over a year ago. Her first molt she lost a leg. I was so worried. I was surprised she grew a new tiny leg back on the next molt. The leg has grown more since. Spidys tank is awesome. This is a great video. I have a question as they age do they stop molting? I keep thinking mine is about to molt. She lost a lot of hair in her legs and won’t eat. She is staying active. I offer her food but if she has no interest I remove it. I enjoy your videos. Thanks 😊
Thank you! I don't think they stop molting with age but I know it gets a lot less frequent. The little ones molt quite a bit and then it slows down. Spidey fully grown only molts every 2-3 years now. I think your tarantula will still molt it just may be less often. Spidey can stay in premolt for MONTHS (sometimes up to a year) and it is so frustrating lol

But I’ve noticed under their butt there is two white spots?
Wednesday is a grammastola pulcra tarantula. I keep googling to try and understand what it means?
Two white spots under abdomen ??? Is that just how they are ? Like what they look like?
Bare with me this is my first tarantula baby and I love them so. I pray it’s just a sign she’s a lady. :,) but also if I get a boy that’s okay I was just meant to have a baby boy Wednesday.
But this may just be what they look like?
First ever molt with them. All I’ve known is Wednesday to look like a grey small baby. Now Wednesday is so black and fluffy. And now styling with two white dots under the butt? I mean how precious ?

I looked into my G. Pulchras enclosure today and it looked like I had two spiders lol. I guess that explains the hunger strike.

Thankyou. My A, geniculata sling molted yesterday, such an AMAZING experience (proud dad lol) anyway so she was feeding on her molt and i think it was for hydration as shes put the molt away feom her near her water bowl. Was amazing to watch her pre-molt as she started acting very strange, webbing up (which you couldnt actually see but fruit flies i had put on earlier were stuck on it) she was walking around in circles kicking hairs and instinct told me she was about to go into molt. Reason im posting this is i have a question: so, when she (i assume and hope shes a she!) Was premolt i put some wingless fruitflies in and they were stuck on her web, during this time she molted. After 24hrs i decided to actually remove the flies through fear of her damaging her fangs.. Was this the right thing to do? God ahe looks fantastic, her colours are really popping now. Sorry for the ruddy long post.. subd
Congrats on a successful molt! The molting process is so fascinating :) I am honestly not sure if fruit flies are harmful to tarantulas during a molt but to be safe I would remove them, even better if you can do it before she molts. There have been a lot of reports of other feeders such as cockroaches or super/mealworms being accidentally left in the enclosure while the tarantula was molting and they attack the tarantula while it is helpless :( I always say better safe than sorry. Glad she is doing well and looking beautiful :)

need help, this is the first molt of my gbb with me and i noticed a few days before is that she was sluggish and i didnt bother her much until today i arrive from school i saw her on the water dish i thought dead but then saw her molt and shes on this weird position and i could see her heart? or idk lungs but its beating or pumping from the skin and after a while it stopped and it hasnt moved its been 2hrs
and also btw shes not on her back shes about 2-3 inches
i had my brachypelma sling about half an inch molt and it was fast i mean i heard they recover faster but my sling wasnt this like on a "dead not moving position"
What about bunching up in a corner or between items in the enclosure, with the legs in weird positions?
It's pretty normal for tarantulas to do weird positions after a molt!
What if they get stuck in their hide because they are too big after and can't get to water? Or will they dig themselves out when ready?
I think they'll dig themselves out! Often times tarantulas molt in weird places and usually they are able to figure it out
When's the best day to transfer your Tarantula into a new enclosure after it molts? After 1 week or 2 weeks?
Great question, I think 2 weeks is safest. Then it def has enough time to harden up and have some water and a meal before having to adjust to a new tank. It might even be beneficial to give them 3 weeks.
my sling just moulted after not eating for a while and i got excited and took out the moult imedietly not knoowing will she be okay?

My Mexican red knee went through a molt for the 1st time since I got here its been 7 days but I think I'll wait 3 more days she's still been laying flat and stretching her legs out.
Always better to wait than too early!
How do you know if your tarantula is male or female?
My concern is since mine digs into a burrow, and she molted in it, I can't see if she had a successful molt in general. So then what...hope for the best?
Ugh, I have a sling that does this. It's so stressful when you have a tarantula that likes to do everything underground. In my experience, my sling will actually eject their molt out of their tunnel when they're done but I'm not sure all spiders do this. What I usually do is every few months I SLOWLY (it takes forever) peel back all the layers of substrate until I start seeing signs of life. I don't do this too often, only every few months. I'm so sorry you're going through this, it's super stressful to have a tarantula that lives underground. Most likely they will be fine though. I think people say the key signal that something went wrong and your spider has died is if the enclosure starts having a smell bc healthy tarantulas should not smell in a clean tank.
How long until feeding slings after molt please
For slings I think it's safe to wait about a week, maybe a day or two less. Some people only wait a few days but it's not safe to feed especially a sling unless you can see that their fangs have turned black. That means the fangs have gotten a chance to harden after the molt.
hello, TH, i want to handle my new Mexican Fire Leg, adolescent, perhaps 4" total, legs stretched. it molted YESTERDAY, and it looks fine. may i gently nudge it with a soft paint brush, into my palm? i plan to use a leather glove, hand still, not picking it up.
Congrats on a good molt! No, I would not touch or pick your tarantula up for several more days (or not at all). Tarantulas are extremely fragile for at least a week after their molt and could be prone to injury.
@@TarantulaHeaven i finished watching your vid, and i'm refraining more now. it's only been 2 days so i will be patient. she's maybe an adolescent, and i'd really like one day to be able to have her crawl into my bare hand, keep her low in the cage, super careful and gentle, so that i can interact with her - yet i do not want her to feel she has to kick hairs, since it would mean she's stressed. also i'd be super super creeped out if she bites me. i can anticipate it so as to remain calm - i assume it'd be a quick jab and nothing more. have you ever been bitten? i hope generally regardless of the species, assuming a fairly safe T, it would not be a brutal experience.
My Chilean rose had her 4th molt here... she looks crippled, floppy, tired. Abdomen is deflated. Hoping if I keep her comfy for the 7-10 days you advised she can recuperate

She looked like she'd been stood on poor girl... but left her alone, and somehow someway she has pulled herself together and is still resting in ICU but looks like herself again. What are your thoughts on then staying on their back after moulting?
Many tarantulas do stay on their backs for a little bit after molting and it's completely normal. They need to rest for a little bit, and will eventually turn themselves over when they are ready. If nothing has gone wrong with the molt, they should be able to turn over on their own.
Thank you for posting this video. This is the first time I experienced the molt. Hugo belonged to my daughter who passed away 3 years ago. Hugo is a 10 yr old Chilean Rose Hair T. This molt was long. She molted in her water dish. I carefully extracted the water without disturbing her. (The pet store gave me some advice) your video really helped me. It was well over 30 hours (close to 2days) before she came out. I saw the molt next to the dish and she has been moving around slowly and is doing fine. I have a hermit crab sponge in the water dish now.
When is it safe to remove the water dish and rinse it out. I was told only to carefully add fresh water which I have been doing with an eye dropper.

HELP!!! My tarantula has completed the molting process 15 hours ago but it is still lying on its back. Should it have flipped over upright by now? If not should I assisted in turning it over? we have had it for 11 years but I don’t know how old it was before we got it from a friend. Please respond to me as soon as you can. I’m really concerned. How are they doing, Alyssa? By now they should have fully recovered and you will know if they are ok or not. Be gentle with yourself, many of us have made this mistake.

It really shouldnt be confusing in 2021. Really? If it was back in the seventhies when the hobby was "new" and there was no internet. Back then hobbyists had bad books, at best! Back then i understand if a tarantula keeper was anxious. they where clueless back then. If a new hobbyist think the tarantula is dying if it is on their back this means that they have done no research before getting the tarantula. New hobbyist will be more anxious than a experience keeper, that is natural. But that is not the same thing. All this you are talking about is in reach with a "push at some buttons" and some hour of research. I am not saying that it is bad that you talking about this. But you know what i mean!🙂
I know what you mean! I agree that learning about the molting process is an important part of doing research before getting a tarantula. However I feel that unfortunately because of how fast this hobby is growing, a lot of people are jumping in and learning along the way. I don't think that's a great thing, but it's happening regardless so I think it's important to put this stuff out there.

What i ment is that the internet and social media these days are so full of information that it is nearly impossible to miss information of moulting and all other stuff if spending half an hour on the computer. But of course it is good that people like yourself put more out there. I remember when i was a new keeper in the year 2000 (jesus, i am feeling old!) All i had back then was some books and a few internet sites. And those sites was really full of bad info. One really had to figure it out.
