The project actually started development in 2006, and Sacha was originally cast for the role in 2007, so he already had had it on his mind for almost a decade when this interview took place, haha. Glad it finally found its way out of development hell, right when the story most needs telling too
I fought on this show with my little brother, the Texarkana show, it was a wild night. Me and my brother were getting ready for our fights as this guy was prepping himself a few feet away from us in full Strait Dave character, I thought to myself, damn that guy looks so much like Borat. The promoters told us they were filming a pilot episode for a reality tv show about MMA. The matchmaker just kind of lined all the fighters up against a wall and put the card together about 30 minutes before the show started, there was a "Street Fighters vs MMA fighters" theme(Kimbo Slice was popular at the time). They put my little brother in the opening fight on the card against a guy that had probably a dozen more fights and 30 more pounds(my brother still won, 1st round TKO), and the gloves were all different, we were given huge 8 oz padded sparring gloves that were like oven mitts, our opponents had the 4 oz standard MMA gloves. The whole show was pretty much like one of the early days UFC's back when there were no rules or weight classes. I ended up fighting in what I think was the last fight that night, there were 2 other fights scheduled after mine but they got cancelled after the shenanigans went down with strait dave, I fought a guy that was like 14-2 in my very first fight, got knocked out and my nose broken, we never made a dime, none of the fighters on the card were even covered with any type of insurance, I probably still owe the hospital bill. The Arkansas state commission was there and let it all go down. The commissioner looked at my broken nose and told me that I had to go to the hospital but never said anything about who would pay for it, the security guards wouldn't even let us back to the dressing room to get our gear to leave until we threatened them. They were selling $1 beers to get everyone worked up then halfway through the show they raised the price up to like 10$, they wanted riot footage they should have filmed the parking lot outside, it was fucking madness, we barely made it out of there. Really crazy night, I wish there was footage of the whole Texarkana show, the fights and everything, I'd love to see it.
OG Shinobi That’s awful that the fighters were treated so badly and were just being used. Still can’t believe that people didn’t laugh about Straight Dave though. I come from New Zealand and the majority of NZers would have pissed themselves laughing! What a waste of a good laugh. Sorry about your nose. Maybe a different hobby would be better...
OG Shinobi You didn’t think anything was up when you participated in a tv pilot called, Straight Dave’s Man Slammin Maxout? With a name like that it was either going to be: A) A prank B) A KKK/Neo Nazi Recruitment rally.
Jesus, that's rough, man. I was in a similar situation after losing an MMA fight and I was fuming. Did you ever get in touch with the producers of the show? They should at the very least pay your bills.
It's so strange to hear his real accent. I wonder if his PA tell him, "you've been here before as the character Borat and just remember that's how they know you"
Kind of a coincidence, but he mentioned he’s had a long fascination with Abbie Hoffman and wrote a paper on him in college. When he heard Spielberg & Sorkin were making the movie about them, he lobbied for the part of Hoffman.

Yes, they tried. But the first one got wrong, they couldn't use anything of that for the movie. Therefore he had to improve on several security issues for the second fight, which made it into the movie.

Sacha is without a doubt the most savagely fearless badass on planet earth
@Daniel Callahan is he tho?
Yessir
His trolling level is not of this world
Totally agreeeee..
Not only is he badass. But he is married to Isla Fisher. Guy is knocking it out of the park left, right and center.
