The Moral Letter to Lucilius are a collection of 124 letters which were written by Seneca the Younger at the end of his life, during his retirement, and written after he had worked for the Emperor Nero for fifteen years. (These Moral Letters are the same letters which Tim Ferriss promotes in the Tao of Seneca)

    Notes:
“The conclusion is, not that hardships are desirable, but that virtue is desirable, which enables us patiently to endure hardships.”
“it is not mere endurance of torture, but brave endurance, that is desirable. I therefore desire that "brave" endurance; and this is virtue”
“Do you think that those things only are desirable which come to us amid pleasure and ease, and which we bedeck our doors to welcome? There are certain goods whose features are forbidding. There are certain prayers which are offered by a throng, not of men who rejoice, but of men who bow down reverently and worship.”
"If you have nothing to stir you up and rouse you to action, nothing which will test your resolution by its threats and hostilities; if you recline in unshaken comfort, it is not tranquillity; it is merely a flat calm."

as a German Biologist and Pythagorean - to train to endure PAIN .- and No reward - is the most advanced learning we can achieve. by chance and unprepared - I met Stephen Hawking crumbled in his high tech wheel chair - all alone - at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2005. I admire his Life courage to endure and impossible situation - he was at the brink of death each moment. And still courageous and friendly and pleasant - as a Light tower to illuminate the dark world - getting darker by the day. The other point is the Value of precious Life - and to do everything to protect it from any damage possible.

A quote I liked but forgot to put in:
"If you have nothing to stir you up and rouse you to action, nothing which will test your resolution by its threats and hostilities; if you recline in unshaken comfort, it is not tranquillity; it is merely a flat calm."

    These are meritorious reads.
Personally, I believe that the way you read them makes them more philosophical, enjoyable and better to grasp.

"Whatever we do in obedience to [virtue's] orders is both good and desirable."

Ralph Waldo Emerson said "The fool looks at the profit or hurt, the end point, and cannot see a principle until it is lodged in a man. But the man of Character does not fly to events for estimates of his truth and worth. The hero knows that the event is annsulary, it must follow him" That's the difference between Seneca and his friend here. Seneca looks to the Soul, the source of all things and events and perceptions, whereas his friend flies to the event, the torture and pain, and asks no more.
