This Classic 1977 DISS Song is COLD as HELL! | Professor of Rock

- Coming up, today’s band Foreigner took a frigid walk through New York City in minus 20-degree weather to nail down their classic 70s song Cold as Ice… a top 10 single about a gold-digging ice queen. A lot of people have wondered through the years if it was based on a real girl, and we’ll get to the bottom of that. Apparently, after finishing Cold as Ice, one of the song’s co-writers Mick Jones thought it was just a little too pop and wasn’t sure if it belonged on the album. But when his bandmates said they loved it, he came around. It was a good choice because Cold as Ice is an undeniable classic rock standard… Tag-teaming with me for today’s tale, we’ve got not one, but two founding musicians from this legendary band Lou Gramm and Mick Jones. And they’re both ready to give you a behind-the-scenes look at this frosty track… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations, where featured artists reveal rare stories about their biggest songs, along with fascinating insights about their careers. For today’s episode, we’re putting the spotlight on Foreigner, a band that since its inception has established itself as one of the top rock outfits of its time. In the US alone, Foreigner has sold in excess of 80 million albums and singles. Their first five albums all went Top 5 in America, including the #1 “4” in 1981. Their hit catalog includes iconic tracks such as Feels Like the First Time, Hot Blooded, Waiting For a Girl Like You, Juke Box Hero, I Want to Know What Love Is, and on and on.
But today we’re telling the story of their 1977 stone-cold classic ‘Cold as Ice.’ And giving us the inside scoop is not one, but two principle members of Foreigner, two greats, no question… Lou Gramm and Mick Jones. Also, I want to invite you to vote for the band for the rock and Roll Hall of Fame! They have been nominated for the first time so make sure to go to the link below to vote for them.
Foreigner got its start in early 1976 when guitarist and singer Mick Jones met multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald at a recording session for Ian Lloyd. Months later, Jones and McDonald formed the band when they connected with four then-unknowns… including Lou Gramm, the lead vocalist of the band Black Sheep. The other three members in that original lineup were bassist Ed Gagliardi, keyboardist Al Greenwood, and drummer Dennis Elliott.
The band derived its name from the fact that these original members were drawn from both sides of the Atlantic. Jones, McDonald, and Elliot all hailed from England, while Gramm, Gagliardi, and Greenwood all were US citizens. The six-piece set to work writing and... - Розваги
Poll: What is your pick for the GREATEST DISS Song of all time?
The O'Jays Love Train 😅
Heart of Glass
"Death on Two Legs" by Queen.
"Everything About You" by Ugly Kid Joe. He disses EVERYTHING!
Evanescence "Call Me When You're Sober"
As Sir Paul McCartney succinctly commented several weeks ago: “Foreigner? Not in the Hall of Fame? WTF?!” 😂
He should be very familiar w/the politics that goes into the RRHOF nominations. It's not a secret.
Was on a construction site about 10 years ago. The radio announced that Foreigner was coming to town. I told the guy I was working with that I wanted to go. He scoffed and asked, "Why would you wanna see Foreigner? What do they sing?" After singing him a half dozen of their hits, he laughed and said, "I think I wanna go see Foreigner!"
I think lou gramm should go down as one of the greatest singers of all time
Top 5 material.
I concur enthusiastically!!
Love Foreigner! Lou Gramm has such an amazing voice.
Foreigner is one of those bands you know who it is from the first note of the song!! Yes I did vote for them for The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!
Awesome. Please vote again and again!
I’ve been voting for them a lot.
Foreigner, Double Vision and Head Games are three of my favorite rock albums. My sister and I listened to those records over and over. Just about wore that vinyl out!
So classic! Songs we sing and hear all of the time!
Pure gold, all of them.
"Cold as Ice" turned into pure gold on so many levels. And 1977 became the Golden Year of the 70's!
Every time you do one of these on Foreigner I'm reminded again of just how much they did.
They are an INSTITUTION!
they have a really good greatest hits list...it might not be as long as say Bob Seger's 2 disc set and then some but each song on the list is good....
@@judgedrekk2981 And they had a ton of great songs which were never released as singles such as Damage Is Done, Starrider, Headknocker, At War With The World, I Need You, Blinded By Science, Back Where You Belong, Woman In Black, etc, etc.
I always maintain that Lou Gramm is one of the most underrated, under-recognized singers in history!
Makes me mad.
Foreigner, and ELO are two bands I wish would get more kudos.
For several weeks, I've been going to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's website and have been voting for Foreigner every day. Today, I checked out the current voting results totals. Right now, Foreigner is #2 and just edging ahead of Peter Frampton by 1,000 votes. They only trail The Dave Matthews Band.
I’m from Chicago where we “vote early and vote often” and they do deserve it!
Awesome!
The Rock and roll hall of fame is a sham. It matters, not at all, in the history of rock.
Mayor Daley would be proud.
Saw Foreigner on their 1st tour at the Riviera Theater in '77. Elliot had some kind of leg injury, so they had 2 drummers!
Vote for them as much as possible.
Back in the early 2000's my wife and I made "the pilgrimage" to the Hall of Fame. Have to say, it really made quite the impression on me...seeing Beatles memorabilia, clothes worn by Hendrix and Jagger, Blackie behind glass among other guitars, written lyrics to Enter Sandman...i was a teenager again! Not sure id ever want to go back considering who has since been inducted. But at the time, it was awesome! Foreigner deserves to be there more than a lot of others... just my opinion.
I have family up there so next time I visit them, I will pay tribute to the Hall.
Foreigner ruled the radio in the latter 70’s. It took me a while to realize justhow many songs they had as they were a cool diverse rock group that they sounded different from song to song. There ability to nearly create so many different tunes were almost Beatlesque. They even fell apart the same. You could not get in your car, go to a pub or a party without hearing a Foreigner song. Pretty much everyone I know was a fan. Great band.
My husband and I saw them live about 20 years ago and they put on a great set, no big frills just really good music. It's a crime they're not in the HOF when rappers and one hit wonders are. I voted for them and will keep voting for them.
Foreigner's Double Vision was one of those rare albums that had multiple hits, almost making it a greatest hit album all by itself. One of those songs was always on the radio, and whenever I hear one of them it immediately takes me back to that time.
Cold As Ice was, is, and will always be...🔥 fire🔥
Cold as fire... that'd be a hit!
I see what you did there, lol.
But that would melt its influence 😝
This song also got me to parody the song Hot Blooded! I started singing;
She's Cold Blooded check it and see! She's got a fever of 0.3!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 BWA HA HA HA!
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to put one of my favorite bands into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I was in Washington DC one winter and it was so cold that I saw a lawyer with his hands in his own pockets. I should have written a song about it.
Bwahahahahahahahahahah!!!! Dude, you just broke the Internet!!
Lol!!!
HA - I get it !!!
Foreigner= first class rock and roll with feeling🤘
Great way of saying it!
Nailed it
Being born in 1972, I didn’t know about them until I got a cassette Walkman in’86 and I would listen to Foreigner’s greatest hits as I mowed our 3 acre yard on our lawn tractor every weekend.
It's about time! Put those men in the RRHOF 👑
I voted for them and Peter Frampton. How could Frampton NOT already be in there? That’s nuts!
Ah, those harmonies... I'm glad they took that cold walk around the block... HOF worthy song, and long overdue HOF band!
Often I'm told, "Okay boomer!" when I extoll the greatness of vocalists from my youth, I SMH.
Who today can match the greatness of vocalists like Lou Gramm, Paul Rogers, Freddie Mercury, Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon, Aretha, Stevie Wonder, Ann Wilson, Robert Plant,... I could keep going but I need to get something done today.
What makes me happy though is how often I chat with teens and 20-somethings in comment sections of music made before they were born. They often have insights I've missed.
Yeah, these kids today... I love 'em! They are giving me hope that we're gonna be okay, eventually.
I remember this song right when it came out. I was in the front yard on a sunny day in Fresno, California, and my Uncle Sam (not the government, that was his name) was working on his Ford Fairlane when we both heard this song on the radio. It didn't feel like a pop song, it felt like a rocker to us! My Uncle is gone now, but this song is still with us.
Just another glance back to the true era of rock 'n roll. So happy I got to live through those eras 🙂
Don't forget Starrider, a hidden gem on their first album! It's an awesome prog rock space song with flutes and epic sweeping sound vistas. Sounds really good and also makes me chuckle 😂
Great track!
OMG! I actually DID forget that song!
I didn't know it was by Foreigner because it has such a different vibe and sound. I probably thought it was by Styx when I was a teenager.
Their variety is just one more reason I love Foreigner.
Thank you Adam for bringing us new videos in the morning. I make daily playlists to accompany daily chores, usually heavily influenced by suggestions from your fans in the comments. Your subscribers are true music lovers who have helped me expand my music library.
Ooh!
@@LazyIRanch Their self-titled debut album was an instant classic with other great tunes such as Headknocker, Damage Is Done, At War With The World, I Need You, etc. Ex King Crimson founding member Ian McDonald had a very big hand in Foreigner's early success.
@@hondaphan4172 I didn't know he was a member of King Crimson! That makes sense. I always learn something new from this channel, from the videos and from other music fans in comments.
It's nice to come here to get away from politics and religion.
This song defines 1977 for me. It was unique, direct, and rockin'!
Amen!
Me too.
This song and the t-shirt for "4" IS junior high school for me.
Foreigner is one of the great bands in rock and roll history!! They sing and play well. They write their own songs. And WHAT songs Urgent, Jukebox Hero, Hot Blooded and today's song Cold As Ice. Plus the great ballads. They were incredible in concert!! Saw the Double Vision tour and the later four piece band tour. These guys rock!! Hall of Fame shi..... They are in my and millions of other fans Hall of Fame!!!!!
I cast my vote for them and I always thought they were already in. They really Need to let the legends in FIRST, then everyone else. I sent a letter years ago asking them to let Sweet in after the passing of Steve Priest and suggested others, never heard from them.
Foreigner needs to be in the Hall of fame!
Some of the best rock music ever created! Legends! 🎸🎶
They were, without a doubt, phenomenal
Amen! Let's get them in the Rock Hall of Fame!
@@ProfessorofRock I am voting daily!
@@Code.Name.V Awesome to hear!
Come to think of it, I've never met anyone who dislikes Foreigner (that I know of) and just about everyone can instantly name their favorite songs by them. That's even true of folks who are decades younger than me who know their music from movies and TV.
Glad I saw this edition of POR. I voted for Foreigner!
Foreigner was all over the radio in the late 70s. They had a unique sound and many great songs. I had all their albums in cassette form (yes, cassettes) and I listened to them all the time. It's great that they are still played everyday on the radio. Timeless classics! Lou said he didn't understand why they weren't even nominated for a long time. None of us did. Just another example of the stupidity of the selection committee. I just voted for them being in the RRHOF and I will continue to do so.
Vinyl for me...oh, and a Ronco Record cleaner. Copied the vinyl to Radio Shack cassettes. Ah, to be a teen again!
@@kimnach Did you use the "metal" cassettes from Radio Shack? Those things were quality! My dad was an electrical engineer who loved classical music, Spanish guitar, and Chet Atkins. He only used those tapes. No hiss, and they lasted.
He recorded his classical albums that now I know I should have hung onto. They were made in Germany and very high quality recordings that sell for big bucks now. He bought those in the 1950s when he was the radio engineer at KVET station in Austin. KVET was owned and operated by all veterans of WWII.
I wish I'd recorded his memories of working in early 1950s radio. He became friends with a great boogie-woogie piano man from New Orleans, Professor Longhair, who visited the station often to play live on-air. He was quite a comedian and so was my dad. He loved that "Professor" the way I love THIS Professor!
Ronco made good stuff! I had the record cleaning kit too. I still use some Ronco kitchen tools that have lasted decades. Don't touch my Veg-O-Matic! It chops! It slices! It even dices!! Does not use electricity!
Some creep stole my pocket fisherman though.😮💨
Oh yes, I'd love to relive some of my youth. Remember back when people were polite?😇
I had Foreigner in 8 track. How aggravating it was to be in the middle of your song and have the track change lol

I love Foreigner so much!!!!
This came out just when I was divorcing my first husband. He wasn't a gold digger; we had no money. But that SOB had become cold as ice when he left me. I was just 21 years old. I remember screaming along with the radio when it played. A long with a few other angst ridden songs of the same time.
Cold as Ice...haven't heard this in years. Thanks for the reminder.
There's a clip of Mick Jones and Billy Joel at a piano and Billy Joel pounds out the main riff and says,"You use these strange Egyptian chords." It does sound like that.
Cold As Ice is my favorite Foreigner song! One of those that my parents had to hear me belting out through the vents when I was teenager 😆.
IT's a great one! Thanks for sharing your memory Linda!
My favorite Foreigner song is "Urgent". I'm a fool for a great, fat, honking sax solo! One of my favorite "crank it 'til my ears bleed" songs.

All the songs we've nominated as the greatest "Dis" songs would make the perfect playlist for anyone going through divorce or bad breakup.
I made quite the list 9 years ago when my husband of 15 years dumped me for one of his side chicks (then she dumped HIM! Oh, the Schadenfreude!).
These days, I rarely think of him. My playlists are much more fun and positive these days.

@@robertvance1873 Right on! Resentment only hurts ourselves. That's like drinking poison while hoping _they_ die. It doesn't work.
Years ago I posted a short YT video I made while outside frolicking with a baby goat and enjoying the wildflowers growing on my 20 acre off-grid mountain property. It's obvious that I'm having a great day in the sunshine.
He sent me a furious email about it, saying I made that video to hurt him. HA!
Actually, I didn't think of him at all that day! He hates this place, but he hates more that I was granted full possession of the ranch in the divorce because I had much more $$ invested in it.
It bothers him because he never saw me so happy when he was living here. Hmmm, funny how easy it was to make this into a happy place in his absence.
I hope he’s in good hands now.
The fan vote for the Hall usually tells you who should be in. They always vote in the bands that Jann Wener never wants in.
The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame is a F^@King JOKE!!! Great show Professor. Adam... You are almost at ONE MILLION!!! I am looking forward to seeing your list of your top 100 favorite songs.
Many in that don't belong. Several that belong but aren't in.
Lou's voice combined with Mick's guitars was a magic formula, right out of the box! Pretty sure they were unaware at the time just how special it was. Lou being cut out of royalties leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, caused a bitter feud. That rookie album release was just UNREAL GOOD!
First rock album I bought on my own. I spend the summer with my aunt and uncle and was working at my uncle's company. Took some of my summer earnings on a bus ride to Tower Records and bought the Foreigner debut studio album. A single teenage girl in Pasadena, California.
The first time I saw Foreigner. Day On The Green #2 & 3: Eagles, Steve Miller Band, Heart, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Foreigner (May 28 & 30, 1977). That was one hell of a lineup and concert.
Lou will never be the "former" singer of Foreigner, he will always be the ONLY singer of Foreigner.
I was the inspiration for Cold As Ice. Nevermind that i was a few months old. I was that COLD. 😁
Foreigner ,Styx and Reo Speedwagon deserve to be in there.
I would agree with you about Styx. But then came “Kilroy Was Here.” 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
I’m right there with you on that. Music Time is another one I can’t stand.
Back in the day, aerobics were a big thing, we did our exercises to Foreigner 4. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun.
❤ Amazing Band, Foreigner! Songs of my life, especially young adult years. I've been voting...Rock on......✌️🥰🎶
Rock on!
Foreigner was always one of my favorite bands and should already be in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of fame
Amen!
Vote everyday! Cannot say this enough.
How are they not in the HOF?
I could never sing as good as Lou Gramm but if I were to do a cover band, I'd pick Foreigner they have so many wonderful and amazing songs. If I out of coffee I crank up some Juke Box Hero. They deserve to win , I've sang Dirty White Boy and sang Double Vision at my project graduation in 1995 (but I sang Double Vision awfully) . Cold As Ice is an awesome song.
We need to get Grand funk railroad in the hall of fame.
My mom had this album she was 25 or so when it was released, I was 8 almost 9; I was fascinated by the album cover and would lay on the floor mesmerized by the cover and the music. My favorite track is star rider. 😊 Great . memories
I must admit I was very shy in school & some guys took that to mean I was stuck up so this song came up. I can't tell y'all just how much I love Foreigner & have been voting nearly every day & sharing it on FB & GAB in hopes of encouraging others to follow suit!
Before I get into the episode I feel the need to express my gratitude and appreciation for your channel. Both from more than just the information/background you provide, the stories/interviews from the artists, and the stories you share about you and your family - they come from remembering when the pandemic hit and I seem to recall discovering your channel around that time and just how helpful you were to keeping me relatively sane and not losing it. Thank you for your part in helping me keep it together. What you do hasn't been forgotten or unnoticed. I still watch because I find your episodes interesting, informative, and entertaining.
You actually helped me to appreciate Grunge more. When it first hit I was already in my mid twenties and very much disenchanted with how much Clear Channel, now iHeartRadio, controlled much of the radio airwaves with one station after another regardless of the format or if it was Classic, Oldies, Adult Contemporary or whatever would play a certain group of songs regularly ad nauseum that even the music I liked became nothing other than noise to me. This led me to not really giving Grunge much of a chance. I've come to appreciate it more over the years especially since hearing you drive into it like you did with Pearl Jam’s “Black.” Believe it or not even Country and Soft Rock became little more than noise to me so what you do here on UA-cam matters.
This song brings back great memories of my freshman year in high school! Thanks for that!!
Foreigner self titled debut from 1977 is a fantastic album and although the hits are legendary it's the deep cuts such as long long way from home, I need you, the damage is done and more that elevate this album for me

It's top 5 for sure!
I already knew the song, but I saw a video on SNL when it was a great show as a girl and loved the segment. I don't know if anyone remembers it anymore. It was so good.
Fun fact: The hit single version of "Cold As Ice" added an orchestral track with French horns towards the end that's not on the album version.

So I went to the Rock hall of fame website to vote for Foreigner again today and saw that the Dave Matthews band is leading in the votes. My first thought is "Dave Who?". I think that Dave Matthews biggest hit was "What would you say" and I'm not even sure that it broke the top 20. How could they possibly be leading in the votes over Foreigner, who have so many hit songs that are still in heavy rotation today on radio stations? I would think that total number of hits and chart position of those hits would tally into the formula of how they pick who gets into the R&RHOF. Come on people, the professor has almost a million subscribers. Lets all click on the link "Vote for Foreigner" and vote.
yeah, Foreigner is 1000X better than Dave Mathews...
Mathews is one of those groups we forgot as soon as they blew up and their big hit didn't really do it for me lol

I've been voting for them every day, even though I don't have a lot of respect for the way the HOF's nomination system has been conducted. They appear to be on their way to finally making it in, though--and it's long overdue!
Lou Gramm and Mick Jones 🏆🏆🏆
Ditto!
I just voted and have a quick link on my phone to vote everyday.
I sent out a mass email to my friends who were in high school then and many, many who are just business associates to ask them to vote. 🙏💙👑
"I wouldnt want to be in a club that would have me as a member" Groucho Marx.
My mother in law used to call me a gold digger. Strange, as there is no gold. 😊
Saw them for the first time in 1978 @ Cal Jam II ... saw them again last summer with my daughter and her husband. Full circle moment!
I saw Foreigner with UFO in October 1978. At the Grape Bowl in Lodi Ca. Great show. Oh yea, one hit wonder Nick Gilder opened. ( Hot Child In The City)
Lou n Mick must have been scorned by the opposite sex numerous times cause it sure inspired some great songs in their day.
It was hard for them to keep relationships because they were always away touring.😢
I agree that the rock hall is a joke, but Lou seems to want it, so we have to get it for him.
Foreigner : Not in the rock and roll hall of fame 🤯 mind blowing
Seriously!
Always been one of my favorite groups.
Saw them in concert a few times. Once with Journey.
Lou Gramm’s vocals are sone of the best in rock n roll history!
PUT THEM IN THE HALL OF FAME!
Hugely impactful group from my teen years. They’re music always just seemed to be there. Now it’s the music that places me in that certain place, certain time!
Cold as Ice …. The juke box at the truck stop restaurant in North Platte Nebraska March 1978 as a bunch of us Minnesota boys headed on our annual spring ski foray to Colorado. Brings me right to the best times of my life!!
