@illogicalrelish This was live on telly bro, the possibility of it being fake didn't make it any less intense. It's fundamently the exact same trick as the cups at the beginning, but with a very suggestible guy that was very nervous so it's actually easier. The only difference is the risk of death.

Her first week on the morning shift, on her way to work when it was still dark out she was struck by a truck and passed away. I carry this weight still. Right before they play when Derren is speaking to James letting him know that it's not his fault and he isn't legally or morally responsible I got very emotional, even though I knew how it was going to end. I noticed how he kept repeating the word "one" over and over again in his sentences when he was instructing James on what to do with his hands under the table. And he picked someone who was very suggestible. I think this trick was real, he did a very good job of picking the right person for the right task and giving him the right conditioning to make choose number 1 in the cylinder.

    • @loirigudo
      @loirigudo Рік тому +21

Good observation, I think this is exactly the case. A subtle kind of hint/hypnosis at the "deer" boy who is terrified and likely to go with whatever he says. The way he says "one" has a double meaning and you can tell it's possible, and likely, to interpret it as THE number 1 instead of just "one of the numbers". I hope this is true, because if so, it's a real trick and a fascinating experiment on human psychology.

When Derren, after his apparent mistake and excruciatingly long pause for thought, finally picked up the gun again and fired it, he did it very quickly. First, Derren subliminally suggests "1" as the number to pick in the instructions he gives to the kid. (I want you to choose ONE of those numbers. You keep that number to yourself but have a look at them now and choose ONE. This number you choose now it doesn't matter which ONE it is. You can change your mind as many times as you like which you make that decision for me and you settle on a number. Are you thinking of ONE now?)
Second, I expect that after the armorer shot the gun, he was instructed to have it with the number 1 chamber out and facing the kid, so that the path of least resistance was for the kid to simply put it in the number 1 chamber. (Note, as I watched this, I was thinking that this nervous kid would just gravitate to picking whatever number he saw on the gun, the easiest number to choose, no matter what it is, so that Derren could not use psychology, like, "he'll avoid the extremes of 1 or 6, go for something in the middle..." because that kind of psychology is thwarted by the fact the gun chambers are presented to the kid in a way that makes it easiest to pick whatever number is ready for loading without spinning the chamber.)
Third, he listens for the quiver in the kid's voice as he says the numbers. He was most nervous saying the first number, then it was all downhill. I myself guessed it was in chamber 1 after the kid's counting.
As a fourth "safety check" he may have been listening for the sound of the kid spinning the chamber before putting in the bullet; the sound of the kid just opening it to the chamber available to him and putting it in is distinct from the sound of the kid spinning the chamber around then putting in the bullet then closing it. So, again, assuming the armorer was told to make sure the "1" chamber was the one facing outward toward the kid when he handed him the gun, the lack of sound of the chamber rotating would be proof where the bullet was.
Fifth, when you open the chamber, it may be possible to load the 2 chamber, too, but by picking 3 as his starting point, Derren never had to test the 2 chamber. While he gives the impression he knows the bullet was in chamber 1, he really was only sure it was in 1 or 2 and if the gun had gone click when he shot the first chamber, he would have instantly fired the second chamber with a result only slightly less impressive.
Note, I think he shot the 5 chamber toward the bag not because he was nervous about it, but to increase the nervousness in us, the audience, to think Derren was fallible, not sure where the bullet was, and that was also why he waited so long.
As perhaps a sixth factor, I note that while the kid was given a chair with numerous spines/spokes in the back (5 I think), Derren's chair had just one post, which also might subtle suggest 1 to the kid. The different type/style of chairs was a bit odd, so I could see Derren saying "I don't care what kind of chair it is, so long as it has just 1 post coming up" for fear the kid might latch onto the number of spokes on his chair as the "path of least resistance" in choosing a chamber to put the bullet in.
As a seventh level of security -- which I would definitely have utilized if I were doing this -- Derren could easily have a camera on the ceiling looking down into the kid's lap, perhaps on the kid himself (button camera on his shirt he is unaware of?) and you have a person charged with watching the kid put the bullet in the gun, make sure it is in chamber 1 or 2 and, if not, send a signal to report some technical issue to halt the show. I mean, checking the table for a hidden camera is kind of pointless when there obviously can be cameras set up behind and above the kid, or even on his person, that suffice to show what chamber he loads. Technically there could have been a spy seeing watch chamber the bullet was put into, and then communicating that to Derren, but I like to think he really tried to do this using suggestion & observation & psychology, and only used this failsafe person just as a back up (assuming he had such a fail-safe which, again, is my guess).

interesting theories, i suspect it was probably a mixture of some of them. I think at least some mentalism and psychology was used, but it wouldn't surprise me that a magician had more than just his skill at reading voices up his sleeve.

@@MemekingJag Well, does anyone really think he was risking his life? That the station would take that risk and air it? Of course not. The show emphasizes that HE has no secret inside knowledge, that he is not using any mirror or camera to look at where the bullet is. But it's no sweat to have a some one else standing by with a visual angle, camera or mirror to see where the bullet was put and halt the show if the bullet is put in the wrong chamber. Even that is subject to an accident/mistake, which is why it makes sense to have a trick gun that can only fire from certain chambers. The cost of such a custom gun is high, but still negligible in the scheme of the production cost of such a tv show. A lot of street magic relies on the magician going up to a TON of people, and their tricks don't always work, so then the editors just show the cream of the crop. Derren could do the same thing, having half a dozen people standing by to serve as "volunteers" for this show, and so if the first puts the bullet in the wrong chamber, they just re-film it with the next volunteer, and over and over till they get one where the bullet is put in the correct chamber. I mean, the show was riveting, so even knowing there is no real danger, they still convey the illusion of danger very well, so it's fine. I don't think Derren is a hack, the way I think Criss Angel is a hack (using simple camera edits and special effects and paid actors to pretend he did magic when it was no more magical than Gandalf casting a spell in LOTR is magical). Criss Angel is a total hack loser, and his fans are the same types who think pro wrestling is real and Jonathan Edwards talks to spirits.

@@mymyersfamily but the same methods of selection of particular participants (plants if its a 'trick') are used to set up the entire plan of having a player so easy to read and suggestible that the odds aren't fair, they're stacked already heavily in one direction. Go rewatch the first 90% of the video, he uses numerous techniques that are explainable to basically create what in a victorian pistol ball catch trick would be a plant. instead of just having someone in on the act, and expecting them to perform their part (not always guaranteed), you use psychological knowledge to find the closest thing to a 'plant' they can get.
Also, the alternatives mean cutting a lot of people in on what would be the highlight of a stage career, and certainly was for derren brown. how could he guarantee silence about the fakery forever?
Occam's razor says that he is simply capable of using the skills and knowledge he already has been proven capable of demonstrating, and this is nothing more than a well thought out stunt that looks dangerous, but after the many layers of deception and subversion involved openly in many cases are stacked so heavily in his favour that he is more at risk of getting struck by lightning than messing up fatally.
finally, you realise he does actually fuck up the stunt right? he isn't sure about one of the chambers so he pulls the trigger aiming at the sandbag. that was just another layer of protection he had, the ability to judge things on the go and play it safe if necessary.

I am coursing psychology and I agree with your third point. His nervousness was at it's peak when starting the count and he became calmer / more neutral after counting 1 and 2. It's like he wanted to get rid of that number in his head as fast as possible, either due to the burden of the knowledge in the sense that bullet may kill someone or because he doesn't want to make it obvious for Derren (or both).
Assuming either 1 or 2 has the bullet, starting from the 3 chamber makes total sense.

Real bullets or not, it doesn't matter as there was no risk of him shooting himself. Do you think Channel 4 would ever air something LIVE even if there were a tiny chance of him shooting himself. I love derren a lot but he should be more honest on how his shows work. Its so ironic because he criticises mediums for saying they have powers and yet Derren has huge amount of fans who think he actually does all this crazy shit for real and defend him like a messiah figure. This is exactly the same as the lottery one: a magic trick with some filler to somehow create a false narrative for how he "figured it out". This one is far superior though as its way more dramatic. I remember watching it as a kid and it was incredible.

I don’t think it’s correct to say there’s no risk involved; it is a real bullet, and while you're right, it’s a trick, it could still go wrong. I agree, of course; It wouldn’t be aired if it did go wrong. Watching it is enjoyable through the cast's perspective before they can say it all worked out. I don’t believe the fact that it’s a trick deducts from the enjoyment either; if it did, I don’t see how any magic could be enjoyed

Exactly. I'm a huge fan of Derren's, but there is no way this was done by suggesting James to put the bullet in chamber 1. Even through suggestion, that would be WAY too big of a risk. Almost everything Derren does can be explained through typical magic tricks; however, I'm not a magician, so I have no clue how he does it.
