I remember going to the U of M in Minneapolis, to get my music degree. Studying classical and all that. Then I saw these guys for the first time at the Cedar Cultural Center. My mind was blown more than it's ever been....and I'd had been blowing my own mind for years. Great musicians playing hyper intense music, with the comedic genius of King to break it up and give your brain a rest between pieces. Thank you Happy Apple for the stuff you guys do and for helping me learn about what music is/should/can be. Where the hell does this music even come from?!? I mean, where on the spectrum, the tradition, did it evolve from? I'd love to know!
Thanks for putting these videos up! I caught The Bad Plus in Tokyo two weeks before this date. I got to speak to Dave King and bug him about Happy Apple going on tour, but he said it's a shame they don't have the support to make it to Asia or Europe. I'm just glad to know that this trio are still playing shows. Total luminaries - so many "improvising" musicians could learn a lot by watching these guys; no tired standards here. Guess I'll have to take a vacation to the Twin Cities area...
I'm a big fan of Dave King for a long time. But I found this video because I was curious about who is this guy playing saxophone in Bon Iver. And omg...
Jake Duea It definitely won't with that attitude. I know it's hard man, I'm in the same boat. But keep at it and one day we'll both be able to express ourselves through music as easy as talking. Just like these guys but unique to us
You seriously sat through this performance. Dude I bow at the feet of Fratzke but I just can't take this shit. Casino Royale and Zebulon Pike blow my mind. I get the avant garde shit but come on man. It's just...
Cant help but laugh at that remark! Like looking at a river and saying, "Nice, little too much water though".. or looking at Pollock "Pretty cool, kind of a lot of paint though"
I love this performance so much!! I found this over 10 years ago and I'm still astonished every time I hear it
So cool getting to hear all the principles discussed in Rational Funk being applied here
lol
I know right, especially using a laptop to get the gaga gig

Amazing how the entire front row goes into a frenzy at some point.

Drop a stick? FUCK YOU IT WAS INTENTIONAL
- Dave King 2012, probably.
these guys are so goddamn amazing
so awesome. I love the way the song assembles itself
Wow. I really hope happy apple put together another album. Or ten. I need more of this. These videos are great. This band is great.
I aspire to one day create music as complex and as pleasing as this...it will never happen until immortality is invented.

Man this is sweet support. A nice spot on youtube's comment section.
@vpsaxman Its a Maple Custom with an 18"x14" bass drum and 12" and 14" toms.
Yup, its not on any of the studio records. Definitely one of my favorites.
Keep coming back to this one. It's a winner. Is this track unreleased?
@lotsofgreendrums: wow, thanks for the specifics man!!
11:28 Love the kids in the front just losing their fucking minds LOL
Holy shit, this is sick!!
This is insane.
Anyone know if there is a studio recording of Happy Apple performing this?
no words
Does anyone know what kind of Yamaha drum set this could be? The bass drum is really small!
Is that Greg Norton on bass? it doesn't look like him.
@talons12345678910 I contacted their label, and apparently, there is nothing in the works yet...
Yeah dude, I was kidding.
Mystery science theater 3000;
Jesus dude sounds like it's time to switch to decaf for you.
I don't like coffee.
Free form jazz just doesn’t do it for me… like John Zorn same.. not for me..
But that’s just me.. one guy’s opinion

Cool, but too many drum fills
