The drummer looks so happy, and he should. Some of the best improvisational/cover drumming I've ever heard, over an already amazing song. 10/10 to everyone on stage
yeah he was kinda right, the drums alone in this won't really move you.Percussions and bass are supporting instruments, and that's perfectly fine, it's not like that makes them less important
I love how The Bad Plus combine Flim with the second piece in this performance. The loungey and vampy informality of the latter tune with its continually oscillating tempo makes for an excellent counterpoint to the rigid and precise nature of the Aphex Twin cover. I think the juxtaposition of these tunes (plus the Physical Cities excerpt at the end) makes the whole number a brilliant (and humorous) display of the use of tempo and timing as a way to engage the audience. Thanks for the footage!!
I love The Bad Plus...they also have the distinction of having been one of the bands that had sony's DRM rootkit included on one of their CD's!...a little cyberpunk history.
This really is the best. It's like you can comprehend the breakbreakbreakdrumand break down live every time with your ears and soul. Some mentioned, drums are not melodic, but this rhythmatic mastery can give you chills fucking DOPEEEEEE
Would someone care to break down King's kit setup/techniques for this song -- specifically and primarily just with the snare(s?) and what he's doing to get those ultra fat snare hits, and the different sounds he gets with the rolls and snare rushes. I'm not a drummer so I haven't a clue, but perhaps someone could help? I see what looks like a piccolo snare or some container next to or on his his main snare but he's getting so many sounds with his snare and rolls in particular . . . perhaps he's adjusting the snare tension throughout, or maybe even using midi drum triggers to double up and create those fat hits and rolls, or possibly placing something on top of the snare? I'm trying to do drum programming for robot beaters on a real kit, so very curious as to his techniques / tricks. Thanks.
Rimshots, flams, grip variations, finger control, pressure, placement of hits, feel... Good luck getting a mechanism to replicate this kind of complexity!
The fact that this video has only 23,828 views while the most vapid shite on youtube hits millions with no effort is f*cking insulting. I've never heard this band in my life and that was an incredible attempt at an Aphex Twin cover. They'll never see this but, "Well done gents. Bravo."
What does differing tastes have to do with people's preference toward pointless and vapid shite? For anyone familiar with Aphex Twin, this is a pretty solid cover. It's a shame more people haven't had the opportunity to enjoy this. Note: I pointed out 'views', not 'likes.
+Khalysto Funkadelic Re-read your first sentence, you answered your own question. Millions of people could 'have the opportunity to enjoy this' and not, do you know why? Because people have varying opinions and tastes.
Maybe because of they dress somewhat like their historical predecessors. Would you ask why heavy metal bands wear black, have long hair and head-bang or why a rapper was wearing a ball cap with hoody over it with a gold chain and flashy kicks? Another example would be your avatar having a guy with a top gun hat which clearly states that you are an approximately 40 year old man-child that should know this by now and has no fashion sense.
All chops and no feel... Or wait, all feel and no chops... No I think it's no chops and no feel... That still doesn't sound right....epic chops and epic feel. That works
this is a cover of an electronic song by Aphex Twin, the drumming is scary accurate to the original recording which was done by a robot. Very impressive if you ask me :)
Astounding drum accompaniment (or lead)? Raised the trap set into an instrument of percussionist melodic syncopation. That people like this are creating art is good, all is not doom and gloom.
Kurt DeWitt in flim? Nah he made a mistake at one point like how man that song isn't hard and he made a mistake I mean that's just not hecking acceptable in his position
It’s a cover of a song. He’s playing the exact drum part that was programmed. It’s a technical masterpiece. Basically inhuman ability. Check out apex twin flim.
i think the same. I know the original song and yes it's similar but for my heart and my vibes doesn't work at all. he is great ok, but for me is not in the gentle mood of this song.
The drummer looks so happy, and he should. Some of the best improvisational/cover drumming I've ever heard, over an already amazing song. 10/10 to everyone on stage
I could watch this guy from all day. He's just totally in the zone. It's very calming.
my personal favorite version of flim that theyve ever done. dave king is fucking incredible, truly one of the greatest
My Jazz Improv teacher told me that drums can't bring people to tears because they are a non-melodic instrument. I wish he could see this..
Music "teachers" who attempt to define what an instrument cannot be are not teachers.
Yeah, but the piano is still playing
RADSQUID123 THE RHYTM, THE RHYTHMMN
yeah he was kinda right, the drums alone in this won't really move you.Percussions and bass are supporting instruments, and that's perfectly fine, it's not like that makes them less important
jazz improv teachers are just that
holy shit, that drumming was spectacular
Mr. David King, you are a God. Thank you very much, sir. After completing my watching, the same goes for the rest of you. Awesome dudes. Just awesome.
this performance never fails to amaze me, no matter how many times i keep coming back to it
those drums though... that is amazing!

dave king is brilliant. what ever i saw this how much times,i wanna say that
Second song is definitely "Have You Met Miss Jones?" but with dramatically shifting tempo throughout. Really interesting take on the classic.
Zac Petit thanks!
Used to cruise the streets, wind in my hair , saturated in LSD with this track playing. Heavenly!
What an amazing showcase of talent.
Fantastic. No other words needed.

That was truly special. Spot on interpretation.
Dave King, Amazing percussion. Keep rockin'!
that cover was on point man david you are a god please do videos of you playing that kind of style on drums
drumming skills on point!
I love The Bad Plus...they also have the distinction of having been one of the bands that had sony's DRM rootkit included on one of their CD's!...a little cyberpunk history.
DRM was on "there are the vistas" which ironically also contained this song.
amazing !! really well done and sound great
Wtfff this is amazing… jaw dropping
absolutely class
wish i was there ,nothing but happy vibes

Damn, that drummer actually pulled it off. Wow.
Holy shit, these guys make jazz their bitch.

ua-cam.com/video/pcZamTg6NCk/v-deo.html there you go, dave king explains what he is doing (partly). Rational Funk is his youtube channel.

Good Meshuggah song at 7:51
yes

+Khalysto Funkadelic I know right, It's almost as if people have varying opinions and tastes.

+Andrew van der Hoop So you're telling me every video on UA-cam offers stimulating mind candy? Every. Single. Video?
damnn!!
It's like what electronic artists are trying to do with their percussion.
They're covering an electronic song, Aphex Twin - Flim
mazack00 what's that? Adding too much, you mean?
i want this drumer!!! :)
hit or miss, but if you like flim, you might like recurring by bonobo
+JYC422 Thanks.
0:38 Free Jazz
WERE YOU RUSHING?! OR WERE YOU DRAGGING?!
Anyone know what the second song is? Swing is not usually their thing, but this is fun.
Fucking incredible drumming. Did AFX justice.
What's the song at the end. Sounds like a Mark Giuliana thing...
+tdrum21 From 7:48 the song is a fragment of a song called physical cities by the bad plus
+tdrum21 ... and the bit before it (after Flim) is Rodgers & Hart's "Have you met Miss Jones?"
i think its have you met miss jones? or something like that. and they swing only when its absolutely necessary.
King David King
They pulled me into their zone :)
That drummers hat tho XD
this is fucking insane
priceless how in the beginning the drummer is banging out crazy beats yet the pianist, who's only playing single notes, manages to fuck one up
If you liked this song check out Darude - Sandstorm
+nucky6 this is funny because im 12 years old
yes dude.. just yes
Legit as fuck
lol drunk Miss Jones comes out of nowhere
not quite my tempo
why do so many jazz guys wear pointless hats
+ReallyNotReally Cause pointed hats are reserved for witches. Duh.
+ReallyNotReally Because they can.
+ReallyNotReally Because they want to. Get off their case.
+ReallyNotReally the hats tilt them off-balance to make it easier for them to play off-beat.

1.1x speed is the best.
Instead of "Being John Malcovich" it should be "Being David King". I'd pay top dollar to be him while playing this tune.
All chops and no feel... Or wait, all feel and no chops... No I think it's no chops and no feel... That still doesn't sound right....epic chops and epic feel. That works

Best fucking comment ever
Aphex Twin - Film
I'm not sure which aphex song this is.
+Tyblerone ' Flim' from Come to Daddy. The 2nd track.
Astounding drum accompaniment (or lead)? Raised the trap set into an instrument of percussionist melodic syncopation. That people like this are creating art is good, all is not doom and gloom.
nyannyancosplay
Can you say syncopation, damn.
Drums are ok, Pianist really nailed it though.
Kurt DeWitt in flim? Nah he made a mistake at one point like how man that song isn't hard and he made a mistake I mean that's just not hecking acceptable in his position
@@louisgardner5580 the higher up on the jazz hierarchy-the less musical freedom
@@teodordl I reckon if one were to plot the jazz heirarchy against musical freedom it would be a horse shoe
This is a really cool Skrillex song but u forgot the drop
+Neil Davis old ass joke. Fucking hack.
fuck you.
+Neil Davis nice, keepin' it fresh I see
+Neil Davis You forgot to tell him to eat your caca and doo doo.
*fresh caca/doo doo
Better the original!!!
amazing drumming, but maybe to much stuff inside that groove. The song is so melanchonic, those drums are too loud for this gentle piano melody.
It's good technically but there is too much drumming. There is such a thing as too much which this sound overkills
It’s a cover of a song. He’s playing the exact drum part that was programmed. It’s a technical masterpiece. Basically inhuman ability. Check out apex twin flim.
