  • Another very good walk from Country walking magazine. This one being a 12.6 mile circular from Brandon station via the village of Hockwold cum Wilton (though 13.8 miles here, due to cattle avoidance) undertaken on a sunny day with a gentle northerly breeze.
The walk initially follows the Little Ouse river, along the Hereward Way. This old, chalky track is followed for several miles to a point near Lakenheath station. Here, there's a short section of road walking, with no pavement, into the RSPB reserve.
After a short walk through the reserve, the walker is back on to the busy road for a short section, and then encounters the worst part of this walk; an attempted blockage of the path and then a bull and cattle!
Having navigated a way to St James church at Hockwold for lunch, the afternoon continues across classic 'Brecks' terrain to Weeting.
A familiar drove is then followed back to Brandon station.
A quality walk, with the exception of the busy road and the cattle near Lakenheath station. Some military jet noise, depending on the day of the walk.
(The swan was a Mute, not a Bewick and the second dead corvid a Jackdaw. The white cattle towards the end are believed to be British White; a rare breed that, unusually, can be used for both beef and dairy. The hare's nest is a form, not a set...d'oh! ).

Worth a gander Julie, as you can see, hopefully.
Reported the path blockage and the bull and Norfolk C.C checked it out within 48 hours! They do not intend doing anything, apparently. Thus, I've reported that to the local Ramblers' footpath secretary to pursue as it needs attention.
      Thanks for watching again😉👍

Thank you very much amib for another fascinating walk in a landscape totally different to mine. I have never visited the Breckland but find it very intriguing. I wonder if the thin, sandy soils are a result of over intensive agriculture in times past ? I know Thetford Forest is England's largest lowland plantation and would love to see it one day. Heard the cuckoo by the way ! Thanks as always

Yes, I'd imagine the contrast with your area is stark.
You're probably right about the soil exhaustion. Still quite a bit of agriculture about the area though. Worth a visit.
      Thanks for watching again😉👍

Mute swan - black nob between eyes; beak not yellow enough either. British White cattle? Rare breed, just right as you suggested for environmental grazing purposes. When making your commentary, do you see what your camera sees with its powerful close-up capacity, or are you having to rely on what you can make out with your unassisted eyes? If the latter, it would explain one or two unexpected errors.

Thanks, I did put those corrections into the walk description before uploading, which is happening more frequently these days. Nothing to do with my eyes, but more to do with my ageing brain and forgetfulness!😄👍

@@amib Anthocyanins are lately thought to be effective in inhibiting brain aging. Red cabbage, bananas and potatoes are the most easily available and cheap enough foods containing anthocyanins that I know of. Anyway, the brightest and best probably make mistakes sometimes when making spontaneous commentaries! I like your own characteristic expressions, which turn up every now and then like, 'at this juncture'.

      Good to hear!😄
Yes, a lot of it is to do with spontaneity; the old brain's not as sharp as it once was😒
Thanks for watching again; I'm just preparing the next one, which I think you'll appreciate😉👍
