Country Walking: March, Cambridgeshire. 22/9/23

This 12 miler ('officially' 9.3, but the walk from the station adds the difference) in the Cambridgeshire fens was under on a day of sunny intervals, with a brief shower late on. The breeze was westerly, and can be heard on commentary at times.
The initial walking is through urban March, as far as the Church of St Wendreda, with its amazing 120 carved angels in the double-hammer beam roof. Thereafter, there's a long section of road walking across the fens, including the crossing of the busy A141.
Lunch is had around the 6 mile mark, in a conveniently located 'seat'.
The walk continues along the banks of the River Nene (old course), following the Hereward Way, and becomes more interesting, though there is a brief, annoying diversion inland.
The finale is through an interesting area of March called 'West End', before the return to the station.
This walk was undertaken to highlight the variety of our countryside, but, for this walker, there was too much road walking (an apparent feature of Phoebe Taplin's walks, I've noted) on relatively busy roads.
(The Great Crested Grebes on the river were adopting winter plumage, which threw me a bit. Definitely not Cormorant off-spring!).

Wonderful church roof as well ! Incidentally, I remember March station as a hugely important junction on early childhood holidays to East Anglia; looks just a ghost of what once was now, so sad. Yes, very different to the height differentials you're used to.
March was an important junction/depot and sidings once, so I read. Very short-sighted to replace some of that with a prison!

At 27:12 - 27:32 is a really nice area of this walk / cycling route. The small park area you speak of is where i sat this time last year while waiting for my tyres to be changed at the local tyre place. I kind of want to get down there now in early morning in the autumn / winter fog, Really beautiful to be fair. I think they finished the housing estate but this time last year you could hear them building it across the river and banging about. St wendredas is a lovely Church, we have 4 in such a small town.
