Or....just made new pokemon that reflected that stuff I wouldn't be surprised if the some of the Pokemon mentioned were gonna have a regional variant, but GF scrapped them and just added in the old forms
I believe Froslass could be a reference to Frozen Charlotte. Charlotte was the name of a popular toy in Victorian England, a porcelain doll to be exact. She came with a story attached. Charlotte was invited to a Winter’s Ball, and needed to ride a sleigh to get to it. Her mother told her to wear a thick fur coat, but Charlotte was vain and decided not to because it would cover up her expensive dress, which she wanted to show off to anybody who saw her on her journey. When she arrived to the ball, her skin had become ice and “as fragile as porcelain.” So Frozen Charlotte dolls were intended as both toys and warnings, against vanity and staying out in the cold.
Also likely a reference to Snow Queen. The story goes that a little boy and a little girl were friends therefore, they were having fun but one day, the Snow Queen visits their village. To cut to the point, she kissed the boy and freeze him alive and took him away. Similar to Froslass's pokedex entery isn't it?

In Japan, the whole “closed country” thing is certainly a significant part of history taught in school, and so is the alliance that existed afterwards between Japan and England. Most people in Japan know this part of history, and to me, feels normal that Japanese-ish Pokémon exist in Galar.
The Bounsweet line is based on Mangosteen, a tropical fruit. I highly doubt they can grow in the UK without a greenhouse. The Joltik line is based on tarantulas. They shouldn't be able to live that far north naturally. (Sure, New York wouldn't work either but at least there are native tarantulas in the United States further south.) The Manectric line is based on a combination of raiju and the maned wolf, neither of which belong in the UK. The Munna line is based on the baku which in turn is based on tapirs. Malaysia was part of the British Empire at one point but I think it's a bit of a stretch. Maractus is a cactus. That's about it. It really doesn't belong in such a northerly environment and it's a pretty underwhelming Pokemon, too.
Considering Galarian stunfisk is there as a nod to bear traps Im not quite sure thats the reason for Mawile being there, but everything else mentioned seems to fit well enough! Great vid as always man!
Kabu came from Hoenn ( Japanese ), so his Centiscorch may have come from there.... Also, for Mawile, it could be because it’s back - head eats iron and England is quite industrial.....
I would absolutely love to see the people at game freak react to your theories. To see all “holy crap he figured it out” and “nope we just did it cause we thought it’d be cool, no deep meaning here” Is there a way to make this happen?!?
It's also worth noting that Kabu is from Hoenn. Considering a Gym Leader is from Hoenn and how Galar is so focused on battles, it's not too much of a stretch to imagine that, from an in-universe perspective, importing of Pokemon happened at some point.
Here's a list of pokemon of galar that'd be wierd in Kanto: Perrserker wooloo Stonjourner Johto: Corviknight Hoenn: Orbeetle Runigregeous Sinoh: wooloo
There are also Mexican pokemon in Galar (Hawlucha, Maractus, and Ludicolo) and Kalos (Hawlucha and Ludicolo) And also there are Japanese Pokémon in Alola, some of the UBs could be based on yokai (Stakataka and maybe Blacephalon)
Ah yes a "history of japan i guess" reference. Also Nintendo missed a good pokemon inspiration with Ebenezer. They coulda done like a three spirits deal.
was kinda hoping you would explain why Sneasel and Weavile were in Galar, but I assume it might be because there's Stoats in the UK. still, a good vid!
Everytime. Everytime he says "I really like this next video" on Twitter, you can be 100% sure, you can bet your first-born to the fact that it's gonna be a very heavy episode with a lot of historical references. I love this channel precisely because of these videos. That said... How D A R E you teach me about Britrish imperialism using pokémon?
Hi lockstin! Love your work! I especially liked the short theories you used to do! I was hoping to bring them back by suggesting a few ideas: -How do physical psychic moves work? With other types it works (how hard do you strike with elemental punch or draconic sorcery infused claw) But psychic is different...it's exclusively power from the mind..taking physical form with psycho-cut? Perhaps. But then, how do psychic fangs work? Dracovish doesn't seem like the kind of pokemon with enough psychic power to manifest them into a bite. -How does Scrappy work? It seems to enable the pokemon to go beyond the boundaries of the dead and living world for it to strike it's ghostly foe. But that's impossible! Right...? -any theory regarding the creation and lake trios is welcome
This is the same company that was like "Ok, we're making an expansion to our British region. It's going to be an island, not as large as the full region but pretty similar in size, it should ideally have some spirituality and mysticism baked into it, and of course, needs to be a great place to put lots of pokemon, our resident spiritual creatures! Since nothing anywhere near England even slightly matches the description of a large, culturally relevant island with a long history of myths and legends not far off the coast, I suppose we'll just have to base it on Kung Fu..."
IKR. They don't care about British culture at all. I'd rather someone who knew what they were doing re-made Galar from the ground up and gave us Pokémon that made more sense, like Swanna and Sawsbuck.
and on top of that calling it the 'Isle of Armor', its almost as if they didn't even care in the slightest to keep the 'u' in the word instead of redactingg it like in American English :l
All those Yokai Pokémon, but not Mismagius, an actual witch. You know, like the innocent women who were hunted in medieval ages. Like all the evil witches in European fairytales. Like the many uses of witchcraft still present in modern day practice.
Every reason given for Pokémon before baltoy and claydol (11:55) is very believable and convincing. Every reason given for Pokémon after 11:55 sounds somewhat weak and conspiratorial. Not that I'm complaining tho, just something I noticed.
Honestly I wanted more British pokemon. Who wouldn't love a pokemon based on a castle or a train. Also I would have loved a pokemon based on Alice in Wonderland or Sherlock Homes.
A lot of these were honestly a massive stretch (especially the radiator and stove thing, neither of those are particularly british imo), but I was honestly surprised that with Mawile the Irish Potato Famine wasn't mentioned?? That'd was a much more obvious and likely explanation
I started watching exactly 59 seconds after you uploaded, that means I'm a great person, right? Also for the radiator thing, J. Turner said that the MC's house was made to look exactly like a generic british house, and it has a radiator, he also designed centiskorsh, so maybe that explains why the british-ness (pun pretty much intended) is less british history and/or myths inspired and more generic british stuff
Form change is also the most common trait with all the gen 8 pokemon. Specially with dynamax and gigantamax being the main new mechanics for the games, not to mention that many pokemon in the galar region have more than one form like toxtricity, applin, sinistea, alcreamie, eiscue, indeede and technically the fossil pokemon and cramorant too. To prove this even further, the pikachu clones of each generation tend to represent the some of the main news traits of each generation. And form change being the trait in gen 8 can clearly be seeing in morpeko and its two forms. Which explains why so many pokemon with more than one form or evolution ended up being part of the gen 8 dex like oddish line, froslass, glalie, spurr line, hippowdon, ralts line and wishi washi.
Not only are lilies common in england, so are trolls. And kappa are like trolls because they both reside in rivers and under bridges and are known to attack travelers for various reasons, usually to eat them.
So basically Froslass had a good reason for being in Galar, but couldn't just ditch her family, so she hauled her husband, Glalie, and their kid, Snorunt with her.
When I was living in Scotland, 'Tea' was just another way to say dinner, so that might be one reason why you feel like the British talk about tea so much, but then again my household was filled with more coffee drinkers then tea drinkers so I can't say for certain.
You should do a thingy about the theory that Darkest, Ultimate, and Blinding One all happened around the same time. (Eternatus, Az, Necrozma) (Dynamax, Mega Evolution, Z-Moves)

Can we talk about the mons that should have been in Galar? mainly Sawsbuck and Castform. Weather is a huge mechanic in the game and neither of the two most weathery pokemon are in it. And the UK is full of deer species, also where is Stantler?! Also where is Mismagius and Honchkrow? Witches and crows are both very British. Then theres Granbull which is basically a British Bulldog. Other common animal looking pokemon like Swanna which has a very famous mythology story in Ireland with the Children of Lir, and Pyroar, lions are like one of the major symbols of the empire!
And then theres a whole bunch that shouldnt be there. Why does Lickilicky get included but not Stantler? Lantrun and Xatu dont really fit. Also no Pyroar but they put in Hippowdon? A few others like Zoroark, Beeheyem and Bouffalant dont really fit the theme. I would have left out Hawlucha, Salazzle adn Turtonator as well.

Am i a joke to you
The Bounsweet line is based on Mangosteen, a tropical fruit.
Mawhile eats iron bars.... Galar has a lot of mines and is based on the England that has a bunch of steel made from iron... That explains it
Also, Sheffield (one of the big cities of England) is famous for its stainless steel.
I can just imagine mawile going ham in Sheffield's steel mills
Kabu came from Hoenn ( Japanese ), so his Centiscorch may have come from there....
Also, for Mawile, it could be because it’s back - head eats iron and England is quite industrial.....
I would absolutely love to see the people at game freak react to your theories. To see all “holy crap he figured it out” and “nope we just did it cause we thought it’d be cool, no deep meaning here”
Is there a way to make this happen?!?
It's also worth noting that Kabu is from Hoenn. Considering a Gym Leader is from Hoenn and how Galar is so focused on battles, it's not too much of a stretch to imagine that, from an in-universe perspective, importing of Pokemon happened at some point.
I like that the devs bothered adding jiggle physics to his hair.
Love the reference to history of Japan(9:46)
Here's a list of pokemon of galar that'd be wierd in
Kanto:
Perrserker
wooloo
Stonjourner
Johto:
Corviknight
Hoenn:
Orbeetle
Runigregeous
Sinoh:
wooloo
5:29 I didn’t know u were from California
Not all of California is desert unless u live near a desert like Palm Springs
There are also Mexican pokemon in Galar (Hawlucha, Maractus, and Ludicolo) and Kalos (Hawlucha and Ludicolo)
And also there are Japanese Pokémon in Alola, some of the UBs could be based on yokai (Stakataka and maybe Blacephalon)
Maractus and Ludicolo fit, because cacti are popular house plants here and Lotad is a lily pad.
Everytime I watch a Lockstin video, I feel so informed!!!...
Calls Mahwile a bear trap.
Galarian Stunfisk: Am I a joke to you!?... Don't answer that!
I've never seen Oliver Twist, so that "MOOOOORE" caught me off guard.
Me: sneezes
Centiscorch: SO YOU HAVE CHOSEN DEATH.
I was hoping to bring them back by suggesting a few ideas:
-How do physical psychic moves work? With other types it works (how hard do you strike with elemental punch or draconic sorcery infused claw)
But psychic is different...it's exclusively power from the mind..taking physical form with psycho-cut?
Galar Weebs bought them over.
The Pokémon equivalent of katanas, sushi and anime.

9:46 OMG HE SAID THE THING!!!!! HELL YES!
@@YujiUedaFan saying they don't care about British culture is dead wrong and shows you know nothing about the research they put into the game 😭
@@wuhoho4687 yeah that is kind of upsetting
Minor but oh well
@@MM80536 No Swanna... swans are royal birds in the UK...
You made me realise that the circles on Claydol's chest are supposed to represent.. Y'know.. I'll never look at Claydol the same way again!
All those Yokai Pokémon, but not Mismagius, an actual witch. You know, like the innocent women who were hunted in medieval ages. Like all the evil witches in European fairytales. Like the many uses of witchcraft still present in modern day practice.
Yeah... 0 thought was put into Galar.
Or even more Pokémon from past gens that fit a British setting, like Swanna, Sawsbuck, Snubbull and Rattata.
I love to learn about these things that he talks about he's so funny also😂
Not only are lilies common in england, so are trolls. And kappa are like trolls because they both reside in rivers and under bridges and are known to attack travelers for various reasons, usually to eat them.
12:45 wait so basically they were the original anime characters?
So basically Froslass had a good reason for being in Galar, but couldn't just ditch her family, so she hauled her husband, Glalie, and their kid, Snorunt with her.
When I was living in Scotland, 'Tea' was just another way to say dinner, so that might be one reason why you feel like the British talk about tea so much, but then again my household was filled with more coffee drinkers then tea drinkers so I can't say for certain.
9:46 I was desperately hoping for a history of japan reference as soon as he started talking about trade
Lockstin: "Hee, hee, Xenophobia is funny when whitey's not the one doing it."
Me, immediately thinking of the Nanjing Massacre: "Yeah...heh...heh..."
I wish they gave seedot and lotad their own galarian evolution
Seedot is only there for the acorn and skwovet
I love how he doesn’t mention China when talking about tea being a common drink
You should do a thingy about the theory that Darkest, Ultimate, and Blinding One all happened around the same time.
(Eternatus, Az, Necrozma) (Dynamax, Mega Evolution, Z-Moves)
I saw “Japan -> Galar” in the thumbnail and figured you’d bring up imperialism. Good ol’ British cultural insensitivity
How so? Generally curious.
@@munch4007 England is famous for taking over 65% of the planet and pre WW1 Japan became an empire by invading a bunch of neighboring islands and parts of China
I find the idea that you can fight off a massive centipede by spitting at it incredibly funny.
"Xenophobia's funny when whitey's not doing it." Best thing I've heard all week. 🤣
BUT LOCKSTIN!!!! The BEST part about Bokksu is the fact that each box comes with descriptions and lore about the snack and region each snack originates from, as well as why that snack and it's ingredients are connected to said region and culture. It's like snacks, AND a super cool history lesson all in one!!!!
“Xenophobia is funny when the whities aren’t doing it” .locksten 2020
9:45 wasnt expecting that
I feel like you over think different reasonings about pokemon and that some of the things that you say the pokemon company might have not even thought of
That’s why it’s all just speculation
Yeah, GF are just incompetent, so much so they don't know that Swans exist in England.
I get that the Oddish line are based on Mandrakes, but Bellossom is explicitly a Polynesian dancer. That entire family should not be in Galar.
first
letter of the alphabet is A.
What's odd to me is some of the exclusions including granbul (english bulldog based), the litleo line (lions are a royal symbol), and the exploud line would have been perfect for team yell.
The fact that he smiled after he burped just killed me XD
That was one of the smoothest moves into an ad I’ve ever seen
Can you do a video explaining all the Galarian shiny pokemon color changes?
Lockstin, I ate Bokksu, and now I blame you for having a jar full of it on my kitchen counter.
I got a year of Bokksu for my 21st birthday. It's super good and expanded my japanese snacking horizon. They also always include one tea and one big bread product.
seriously this isn't an ad I'm just talking about the project lol
OMG!! I just realized that there is an exclamation point on the top of centiskorch's head. So funny 😂
I'm gnot a gnelf
I'm gnot a gnoblin
I'm a gnoggin
and you've been
GNOGGIN'D
9:43 nice reference
