The Art of Farming

  • It's a very hot day. Hilarie and I have to move the laying hens and cattle, and check in with the pigs. Afterwards, I take a walk to see how each of the fields is growing, and explain how I maintain pasture health during the heat of summer. Farming is an art as much as a science or a brute attitude with big machinery, and the decisions I make regarding how the animals are pastured, when to make hay, and when to clip fields are based on experience and judgement more than anything.

Thank you for the Himalayin' joke that made me literally snort out loud. That was the icing on the cake of your wonderful video Pete. That and the way you made Hilary roll her eyes at your brain burning crack made the whole show sparkle with delight and a hog heaven, cow tootin' good time. Loved learning more about how you view the grass and how you make decisions regarding the fields, having the seasons, and all the many ways to make your cattle, hogs and chickens happier and as content as possible. Love the way you love farming, it makes me yern to be in that life as well, as I'm sure it does so many other people who watch you. Humans are farmers at heart anyway, we were put on this earth to take care of the nature God gave us and the natural way you go about it pulls on those natural instincts inside all of us. Thank you for sharing your gift of gab and wisdom of nature... and even your wonderfully bad jokes. I needed a good snort today.

My small vegetable garden does whatever it wants to, depending upon Mother Nature. It’s always a decision about putting on the shade covers or the plastic to protect it from too much rain. Then there is the matter of outwitting the bugs. It’s never the same and whatever food it offers is always a treat.

One of the main reasons I have subscribed to your channel is for the intellectual aspect. I am a systems engineer who works on IT systems every day. But, I grew up in the farmland of the Midwest. So, I have a connection to farming. I never realized all of the systems involved in running a farm! I just assumed the farmers let he cows go where they would within the fences. Your channel has been a true blessing to me.

9:33 we used tons of fertilizer every year and re-seeded every year. The grass was 4-6 feet tall but all the chemicals. Those fertilizers were very expensive. But the farm was just a tax right off I found out years later. It was always in the red and belonged to a billionaire that got a lot of tax breaks for a farm that was struggling to make it. It’s all gone now. I miss that place.
Your doing it right Pete, love your philosophy on farming.

When moving the chicken tractor/house you could hear the old rooster was loudly crowing and the hens were wildly flapping to the shifting hen house instead of "Ya-hoo!" Great way to start the morning that ended up in a greener chicken run. The cows gather for their early morning meeting and roll call under the Elm tree. Patty chairs this meeting. Seems like two of them were missing.

It's a ballet, Pete, and you are the orchestrator! It's FUN, too, ain't it?!? I get just as much fulfillment now as we've aged out of the new challenge of seeing how much of the macro we can put into what's truly micro on the .92 acres we live on now. Yes, I get to stretch my legs with my special needs guys on the school farm and helping other homesteaders get going and that's fine, but you're SO right! The mental challenge of seeing how much can be produced on nurtured land is what gets me up in the morning! We had a "field day" here at the home place back in the fall and it was standing room only.... I LOVE it!

Another great enjoyable video Pete, like a lot of other viewers I enjoy listening to your comments about your fields and hay. Back in 1975 there was a great drought out west they were in dire need of Hay for all the cattle. I and a lot of other dealers were buying hay in and all around your area. from Rochester to Govenor, to finger lakes area. weedsport. Cicero. etc and trucking down to the rail yards in Amsterdam and unloading it onto rail cars to go out west. I myself bought and hauled over 20 thousand bales of great quality hay. mostly good Timothy Alphalfa mix Lots of Tree foil in some loads also. made a lot of good friends back then miss the farmers. and all associated with it. Just turned 80 and enjoying my retirement watching Just a few Acres Farm. Thanks for sharing Pete. ECF

Your way of farming using your intellect and nature observation is more successful than most others I watch. I find myself saying," no, you do not want to do that, you will destroy your ecosystem" at others, but never at what you say and do. My wish is that your pigs would be able to get more natural sunshine Like the two sweet little piglets. But I realize how unrealistic that is...unless you could let them out in your pasture which they would make a mess of in no time!!! Love you videos, keep them coming! Love how your cows "talk" to you!

I’m pretty sure he’s got little doggie doors where the pigs can go outside at will. At least in some of the stalls. I remember him shoveling out the muck they dragged inside. To be honest, the weather in this area is either so hot or so cold most animals prefer to be inside out of the hot sunlight (or the cold wind in winter) anyways most of the time. Look at his cows, they have all that green pasture and they’re huddled up on a mud patch in the shade because of the heat. Central New York pretty much only has a month or two of nice weather in the autumn and sometimes in the spring.
