Uv sterilizer's are a very big to have equipment in my book great bit of kit to have on a reeftank just make sure you get the flow perfect through the uv or it's pointless of having one 😊
stopping by to say hello that is the best investment you've made I have UV sterilizers and all my systems make sure you set the pump is lowest possible you want to get the best slow circulation going through that UV so that it's effective things are looking great in your reef tank congratulations
That wave action is mighty close to your rim. UV is great for maintaining clear water. The only trouble with larger units is they have to be hard plumbed and are quite large.
I am getting a 9W UV sterlizer tomorrow. I have white cloudy water in my 45 gallon fresh water tank and nothing works. Tank is cycled and my other tanks cleared. Never had this problem and do not want to keep a UV running forever on a fresh water tank. Sure hope it works. Pretty sure its a bacteria bloom but tank was cycled. All my parameters are good , ammonia is zero. If it was a bloom I would think ammonia would spike. Baffling.
Cloudy water could be the result of improper rock curing and other issues going on in your tank. UV potentially could either slow down algae growth or disease (not both unless u have 2 units). You probably have nutrient issues that UV will only mask.
Almost as big as the tank! :) Does it heat it much? I was thinking of no joke, a 36 W for a 10 gallon because we can use it on the future pond, or a larger tank. May not run it many hours, but our heater just broke and maybe this can do both jobs, on during the day and off at night or on off multiple times a day.
@@SCReefer well, yeah it totally is overkill, but it could run for 5 minutes a day if I wanted ;). Also though dwell time and UV strength still need to be high to sterilize vs clarify. It would be a good test of whether it is really true that you can't kill most of the good bacteria (the claim ia that it doesnt in a mature tank since most isn't floating around). 9 watts is said to be nowhere near enough to do anything but clarify. Probably if it was running most of the time it would make up for a short dwell time by retreating the same microbes multiple times. Not sure how effective that is vs a single long dwell time though. I think I would be most concerned about the redox potential (Reduction Oxydation) being changed too much. It is supposed to be a beneficial effect but is likely to be too much.
It would be the cheapy chinese Jebao 36W. Actually though they make a stainless steel version that might be better. Could repair it easier or replace with my own bulbs and ballast if it got to that. Just want the big wattage since it could be used on other tanks or our small pond later. Does your UV bulb effect the temp?
Yeah same thing happened to me, I ordered directly from that company and turns out I just went to home depot and bought the fittings. I had a green water issue when I started and I mean really green. Cleared it out in one day. Now I don't even use the sterilizer. I just have it put away for future emergency use.
Jason you are spot on, this is an incorrect installation in my opinion. Essentially he has the jebao fighting his return pump (manifold pressure), which wastes electricity and generates heat. It would be better if he just left off the jebao and ran the UV off the return manifold. As is, he is probably getting low flow through the UV due to the jebao pushing against return pump pressure. Still, I am glad the UV solved his problem! Cheers
Sweet. UV’s. Really works. I had one on my planted tank. They say it can kill the good bacteria I’m not sure if that’s true or not I’m sure you read that already. Looks great 👍
If you have a manifold why do you need another pump? I bought the same UV sterilizer that will connect to my manifold too. I'm waiting for a kitchen renovation to finish.
Great vid SC. I would have thought hooking up outlet to manifold would reduce flow from Jabo pump, obviously it's working since water cleared up in 24 hrs. Looks great.
Either way, ReeferGil is right. the hydrodynamic force from the return pump is sure to overpower the small jaebo, reducing the throughput of the water through the UV. Putting it on the return was not the best idea. Should have just pumped it into the return compartment.
Any downside in running sump --> UV --> display tank ... with the 3/4'' tubing going directly from the UV to the display? I can't modify the return like you have with a manifold.
The max flow rate for the UV is 400GPH for saltwater. I run the flow slow through the manifold so there is more contact with the bulb. Never had any issues and it makes the water crystle clear.
Pull as much off as you can...lights out for 3 days and add a good clean up crew...emerald green crabs...a lawnmower blenny..wrap the outside glass with a garbage bag...
Added note... Your lights should be on no more than 10 hours A-day... Also check your phosphate level it's probably very high.... You can buy a bottle of phosguard
hey i have silly question,,, UV light causes caner right? so if you are using it in your fish tank isn;t the water gonna be full of uv ray cancer causing rays right??? that might cause cancer while you are doing maintenece and stuffs, isnt it so? sorry for asking a dumb quesiton...i was just wondering...also i am a germiphone and i get really touchy with some subjects
To be honest with you I never really heard that before. people have been using the UV sterilizers for years and I've never heard of a single incident of someone getting cancer. Years ago they used to say that power lines causing cancer and now I see houses being built and people buying them under the power lines all the time. You got me interested though I'm going to look that up.
Not necessarily true. Good bacteria usually adheres to your live rock and sand. The UV only kills free floating bacteria and usually in a mature tank, good bacteria won't be floating therefore UV sterilizer can't kill it. :-) Happy Reefing!
Wow 😮sir ! I get shocked with the result , awesome 👌
Glad that cloudiness is clear for you, i know you have been at it for quite some time....Congrats on a good purchase....

Everybody tells me about that wave line hasn't gone over yet

I love the floating canopy. Where did you purchase it, and how is it hung ?
I built it myself it's real easy. I did a couple of videos on it if you go to my channel and looked through the videos
It's all one by twos and plywood very light

Very nice video helped me out a lot! Thumbs up👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
your tank is coming along nicely, looking good so far look forward to seeing the progression. how do we get a shirt?

Wow 36w will be way overkill and kill all the good bacteria in the tank. My friend has a 50w on his 350 gallon. You need more like a 5 watt or 10 max.

Yes, if you put it on a timer that would be great. And if you upgrade your tank in the future you will be all set. Let me know how it works out.

Reckless Reefer Yes it is truly amazing the way it works.
Nice addition! Hard to tell but would the plumbing back into the return manifold not create back pressure on the pump?
When the pump is on the lowest setting it bubbles at the pump due to back pressure. when i turn it up if flows really well.

Thanks! I do not think I will leave it on all the time just in case.
You are correct, UV kills all bacteria. Good idea to cycle the run times.
If you have a manifold why do you need another pump? I bought the same UV sterilizer that will connect to my manifold too. I'm waiting for a kitchen renovation to finish.
For some reason the flow was not strong enough.
Great vid SC. I would have thought hooking up outlet to manifold would reduce flow from Jabo pump, obviously it's working since water cleared up in 24 hrs. Looks great.
The 40 watt is rated for 400GPH and my pump is 528 so i keep it on the highest setting.

I recently got this unit but the manual said I need to put 1800-2000gph of water through it. Do you still using it via a 400gph power head?
When the flow is slow 400GPH it kills more unwanted bacteria. 2000GPH it zips by the UV light and it will not kill as much or very little.
Great video nice tip about the UV outlets. 👍 Crazy Dogs Man
915Mang THANKS for stopping by!!!
What kind of dog do you have? I'm thinking of getting out of the hobby.
Shih Tzu
Is it possible to get the link where you made the purchase ?
Frank Blanco ... I purchased it on Amazon
do bubbling method at note your water will be crystal clear in weeks
Never tried that, I may shut the UV after a week and start bubbling with a wooden air stone. THANKS!
How do we rid of green hair algae ???? Like it just keeps coming back ??
Pull as much off as you can...lights out for 3 days and add a good clean up crew...emerald green crabs...a lawnmower blenny..wrap the outside glass with a garbage bag...
@@SCReefer are we keeping the green garbage bag on just the 3 days when we do no lights ?
@@lyncressler2608 ... Garbage bag and no lights for 3 days... Make sure you get some Emerald crabs and 2 lawnmower blennies
Added note... Your lights should be on no more than 10 hours A-day... Also check your phosphate level it's probably very high.... You can buy a bottle of phosguard
@@SCReefer we've had it checked and it was low .. but that was weeks ago .. I'll have it checked again .. thank you so much
Do you let your uv light on 24/7 or is their some certain time you turn it on?
You do not need to run it all the time. If you look through the side of the tank and it's a little cloudy. Then it on as needed..
@@SCReefer thank you so much for that info really help a lot =)
That's awesome. I purchased one a month back, but haven't done the install
laminar flow It's amazing now it's 2 days and it's even clearer

40 Watts
hi i think it would kill beneficial bac as well
