The audio is a combination of the original track from 1970 - • Nazz - Take the Hand - with my own piano audio.
Scoring is Sibelius 7.5 of course.
This was another commission for Henry P (thanks Henry 🙂) and I wanted to put it up on YT as I think it’s a fantastic song that deserves a wider audience than I suspect it currently has; I’d certainly never heard it before!
It has a LOT of chords in it (I’m used to that with Genesis! 😂) but they’re quite different from anything Tony would write in that they’re very much based on relatively simple jazz-style chords and sequences.
i.e. 7ths (maj, min & dom) with added 9ths & 13ths plus lots of ’11’ chords (chords with 7, 9 & 11 in but a sus4 instead of the 3rd); and loads of ‘ii-7, V7’ chord progressions that occasionally end on ‘I^7’ (otherwise known as ’two five (one)’ progressions).
I say ‘relatively simple’ because there are no altered dominant or substitution chords etc. that you would find in more complex jazz harmony.
In many ways, the whole piece can be seen as pop with more colour 🙂
In the Dropbox folder you’ll find more PDFs than I usually provide...
6 to be precise (4 in a subfolder)!
‘Take the Hand’ is the main one that I use.
‘Take the Hand from Vid’ is the one mentioned in the performance notes whose name says it all really.
The piece’s rhythm is very Latin and it just looks easier (to me at any rate) to have it based on the 2-3-3 (and variations; 3-2-3 & 3-3-2) quaver rhythm; this is how the above 2 PDFs are scored.
The other PDFs are in the ‘Alternative PDFs’ subfolder.
In the ‘…Trad’ files I’ve written the rhythms in ‘traditional’ music notation. i.e. notes cannot span the half-bar point (for 4/4 bars that means beat 3); they have to be split in two and tied, with the second (tied) note starting on beat 3.
These files are for those coming from a more traditional background but are used to sight-reading all the tied notes that occur with Latin and syncopated rhythms.
To me, it just looks WAY too busy with so many tied notes! 😂
The ‘…Half’ files are precisely that. The bass line (left hand) is written ‘traditionally’ like the ‘…Trad’ files while the piano part (right hand) is the same as my main 2 files. I think these ‘…Half’ versions are a pretty good compromise and are particularly useful if the parts are to be played by two different players; a bassist and a keyboardist.
    Some performance notes:
The right hand (RH) very much represents what's played by the piano on the original.
The left hand (LH) represents the bass guitar.
I think the pianist doesn't actually play any bass notes as such; rather he plays low chord notes with the LH as there sometimes seems to be 5 (and even 6 at times) note chords going on especially in bars 6 & 7 and 32-39.
I've tried to get across the thickness of the chords in those particular bars by having octave or 2 or 3 notes in the LH at those points rather than sticking to the bass guitar line.
For the rest of the piece I think I've got as much of the piano chords as is necessary in the RH.
No need to stick religiously to the LH as, like I said, it's originally done by bass guitar.
I'd tend to use it as a guide and just keep an eye on the chord symbols.
    Intro.
Just play the single ossia bar twice with the RH.
With the LH, play a single A-note at the start of the first bar in the LH and then play (again on an A-note) the same rhythm as the RH during the second bar and a short A-note at the end of the second bar to lead into the Verse (see ‘… from Vid’ PDF for details).
    The rest of it.
In the 'Take the Hand' PDF, I've only written the one verse to represent all three.
The RH is pretty much the same in all three verses and the LH only differs a little bit in the rhythm each time.
Having said that, the RH rhythm for the 1st bar of the 1st Verse is actually the same as the Intro.
The video contains pretty much the exact bass line for each verse, so if bass note accuracy is essential for some reason, you can get the actual bass line from the '...from Vid' PDF (except, of course, the above mentioned bars where I've combined the bass with part of the chord).
Also (if we're being particularly fussy), bar 36 is actually delayed by a quaver on the original, but I've viewed it as possibly a mistake so I haven't written it as such. I apologise if the bassist meant to play it that way... 😉
Bar 9. This really is my interpretation of what’s played.
To be honest I'm not entirely sure what's happening on the original, so I've made up something that sounds very similar and works for me! 😉
Anyway, that's it really. Enjoy! 😊

Interesting piece. I never heard this until now. I've been a fan of Todd Rundgren since his early days, heard a lot of Nazz tracks but this is a first. It sounds as if it has Todd's imprint all over it. The one I've always wanted to learn of Todd's is from the album Todd, "Don't You Ever Learn". I think he said it was a serial melody. I remember hearing it live and how mesmerized I was by the mid section. This tune here isn't bad, excellent early Todd! Great work (transcription) as usual my friend!!

Me neither til I was asked to transcribe this track even though I'm a bit of a fan of Todd Rundgren (particularly his proggy Utopia stuff).

It is lovely but now you mention it it does remind me a little of ‘I Saw The Light’ by Todd.

@@ElektrikHob Great job, again, Hob, and once again, thanks!
Speaking of proggy Utopia - have you heard "More Light", from the "POV" album? Saw Utopia perform it live on tour with the Tubes at Radio City, NYC, in '85. Stunning.

@@henryptak1726 Reminds me of It Bites (my favourite 80's band) a bit; cool track 😎 Roger Powell was a great keyboard player (and computer geek 😊).
