A year ago I had to perform CPR on my dog after she went unconscious and essentially died right in front of me. I never learned CPR for dogs and improvised in the moment. I gave her CPR lying her on her back like with a human at a tempo of around 140bpm (I knew I had to do it faster than with a human since she is a smaller animal and took a guess as to how much faster). It actually worked and completley brought her back to life after a minute or two of chest compressions. Unfortunately 30 minutes later when we were at the hospital, her heart stopped again and this time nothing could be done to save her. Although we still ended up losing her I am happy I was able to give her an extra 30 minutes of life. She even walked around and was waging her tail while saying hi to another dog when we first arrived at the hospital. If I ever need to do this again I will now do it the way you have taught.

I think he'll make it, only need to wait for the meds to clean him up. I love you Buddy!!!😭🐕💓

And yes, be prepared to get saliva and dog snot in your mouth. It is better to break some ribs than to have the dog spend time without oxygen to the brain. Depending on the size of the dog you have between 2 to 4 minutes until brain damage occurs. And if yours administering CPR in a car never do it on a seat. It must be a flat surface for the heart pumps to count. And always lay them on their right side and push their elbow towards their chest.

Thanks for the video. I just got a 3 month old pup, and she sometimes gets ahold of small objects when I'm off guard. Hopefully she never gets something lodged in her air way. :)
We had to do this to our sweet pup last night and she is stable now. She went into shock and dropped dead right in front of us and cpr and karo syrup helped us revive her.

My dog just had a heart attack or a stroke or seizure or something. (He's still alive) we're bringing him to the vet tomorrow. I think I might need this soon. Thank you.
Absolutely, this can apply to cats too. The RECOVER guidelines cover cats and dogs and I will write a blog post this week covering Cat CPR and will publish it on www.firstaidforpets.net
Pro tip. Get rid of your nylon collars. These collars can get interlocked and twisted as dogs play. My brother's pit mix just died because he got entangled with his cane corso pack mate. By the time our dog watcher noticed, The smaller dog was already dead. The sitter was able to save the Cane Corso at least. Tycho Could've been revived with CPR probably though if the sitter had thought about it.

For all of you watching this video, I hope no one has to do it. I can't imagine doing this to my dog I don't want anything bad happening to her. But its good to know these kinds things in case something happens.
Hi, unfortunately my dog has to be put down in 2 days he has heart cancer and I don’t want to put him threw the pain of trying to recover. I am looking up this information so I can help any future dogs I come across. Is there another place I can check for a pulse? I don’t know if I’m doing it wrong or my buddy just doesn’t have a strong pulse.
Dog's are property and you could land the owner or yourself with a huge vet bill. Always best to ask first but if you can't ask and still want to help, then good to be aware of the facts. Hope it is helpful Emma
@@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1 that's essentially the same as saying you shouldn't do cpr on a stranger (human) because you don't know if they have health insurance. like i get what you're saying, but morally i feel an obligation to help the dog regardless of permission, especially if it's a stray
Hi there thanks for this video. If the dog faints (Boxer) and is on its left side down, is it necessary to roll the dog onto its right hand side first, before applying compressions?
Hi there, because a boxer is a barrel chested dog, it is recommened to have the dog on its back to give compressions. If you go and look at our more recent posts there has actually been a slight update to dog CPR. I hope this helped.
@@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1 thank you. Apologies I said fainting because she regularly passes out on walks and I closely monitor her breath so that I’m ready for CPR if needed! It would be difficult to keep her on her back by myself, and although she is barrel chested to some degree, she is also the runt and medium sized, so her body isn’t classic stocky. I’ve just watched your updated video; apply compressions once breathing has stopped, don’t bother with initial life breaths. Again, if I was to use CPR on her side, is it better to roll her onto her right side down and apply the compressions to her left side, or doesn’t it matter?
Very informative video! I would like to know if it is OK to perform Hands-Only CPR like the Bystander CPR for adult humans if I am not comfortable with performing the rescue breaths. Thanks!
Does this work on little dogs too? I have a small Jack Russel and I m thinking that I *maybe* dont need to "break his ribs" to get it to work. Am I wrong ? I want to do it the best way possible. Do I need to "feel exhausted" while doing this movement to be sure Im doing it with enough strenght ? Do I have to follow the steps in the exact same way for every kind of dogs ? Or are there exceptions?
I am just gonna have to say that, if you see a dog, that is unconscious. You better be helping that dog or cat or whatever. If the owner doesn’t give you permission, they dont deserve to have an animal.
I don’t think you’re supposed to check pulse anymore. Most untrained people cannot feel it and they waste a couple mins trying which delays CPR. For that same reason they removed pulse checks in human CPR (for the lay person not healthcare provider)
This is right for humans, but not for animals. They still recommend checking for a pulse with dogs and cats as it changes your approach and whether you need to do breaths or compressions
I was doing CPR for human for my puppy yesterday but it was too late. I lost her already. Wish I had educated myself earlier and watched the video ever since. But no one prays to need it not me.😢
I was watching my daughter's dog yesterday and she got to a extention cord that had been cut frm the door hitting it...I heard a loud thumb like someone threw something at the door and power went off I knew exactly what happened and rushed in the room looked behind door an ther she layed lifeless ...I grabbed her and 😢started doing cpr threw her nose and on chest I didn't ever learn how to do cpr on a animal but heard somone say put your mouth over nose n mouth she is a small dog so I did after 3 or 5 times she came too took her around 30 min frm the time it happened until she came back ... she had got electrocuted heart barly beating but no breathing ...few hours later she acted like nothing ever happened...it was so traumatizing

We let my dog go swimming with me and if she does go unconsious I don’t know how to do the compressions because she’s so skinny and I don’t want to break her bones
Dear DaileyDoodle, it's definitely better to resuscitate a dog and break a few bones than not to resuscitate and let them die! Bones can heal but if they're unable to breathe they will definitely die!
they will not go to jail if they are not the ones causing harm, you are allowed to call 911. if an animal is in danger you must call your local emergency vet, not 911

There is a risk you can damage their rib cage, which is why you would only resuscitate your own dog, or ensure you obtain permission from the owner first. if you don't do anything then the dog is dead. As with humans, CPR does work and does save lives.
Moody Bloom I honestly don't understand your logic. I mean no offence and I hope I don't come across as offensive but SERIOUSLY? Hurt it's rib cage? So what are you suggesting, not perform CPR and just allow to dog to die so not to hurt it's ribs? Come on.
Absolutely, but please ensure you have permission to resuscitate the dog as under the law dogs are the property of their owners. CPR does work and you can save your dog's life, but to do it effectively it is possible you may damage their rib cage.
Tobias Winter Of course it is, but there are a lot of spiteful people out there who will turn around and sue you even after you save the dog’s life. Some people sue others when THEY’RE lives are saved. It’s crazy. I say do it at your own risk.
@@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1 I did CPR but I could of gave him a bit of time to breath and put my mount in his nose instead of his mouth I just tried my best

well one thing i don’t understand why we need the permission!!! If that is not ur animal and u know how to cpr why don’t save it!!! Ever second is important, we shouldn’t waste any moment just ask for fking permission !!

Sorry, but I AM going to preform CPR on any animal who needs it, regardless on whether or not their owners say I can or not. Animals are their OWN separate beings, who should be allowed the right to be saved. Not all people care about their pets, and would easily let their dog die, with no remorse at all. If those dogs could speak, they WOULD consent to being saved. Also, once the victim goes unconscious, they automatically consent to CPR, (this ONLY applies to CPR, NOT sex/r@pe), so the second that dog goes unconscious, ANYONE should be allowed to preform CPR to save their life. I am NOT just going to stand back and watch an animal die, JUST BECAUSE their owners suck. Sorry, but not sorry. I like animals more then people, so i'm saving those who need help.
This is wrong... You should never approach a dog or any animal, or even humans from behind. You should let the injured animal see you and hear you and see that you're not going to hurt them. What is more, you shouldn't check the pulse. It's a waste of time, especially because regular people usually don't even know how and where to check it.
The advice you give is correct for human first aid, but not for dogs. For pets you do check for a pulse and this is why people should familiarise themselves with this information in advance and not rely on it in an emergency
I'm so sorry to hear that. This video was made with the intention of teaching people in advance of a crisis but we are definitely intending to record a more concise version x
Sorry, but this is being disliked due to the remark about not performing first aid without permission. If it is safe to do so and you know how I would expect you to save a life. Thank you for the video it is very helpful but I kind if feel that your exact wording is honestly quite cruel. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ sorryyyy
We had to include that as it dogs are owned by people (whereas cats aren't) and if someone were to worsen the situation of a dog there would be implications. I understand where you're coming from though, hope you understand we had to mention that
@@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1 Okay, fair enough, I've changed my mind on the video. I guess people will just have to use some common sense after assessing a situation such as this and decide what is really best.
Jesus christ could you say that more rudely? This channel makes videos to make sure people can save their pets and you are just being downright disrespectful

We're so sorry to hear about your loss.
Thanks for the video. I just got a 3 month old pup, and she sometimes gets ahold of small objects when I'm off guard. Hopefully she never gets something lodged in her air way. :)
Leeroy Bug thanks for you message and enjoy your pup. loads more useful information on firstaidforpets.net
We had to do this to our sweet pup last night and she is stable now. She went into shock and dropped dead right in front of us and cpr and karo syrup helped us revive her.
Thank you kindly for this very important video. I appreciate you sharing your time and knowledge ❤❤❤❤❤❤

How about the dying puppies is this complicable to do too?
My dog just had a heart attack or a stroke or seizure or something. (He's still alive) we're bringing him to the vet tomorrow. I think I might need this soon. Thank you.
Good luck, I hope they are okay
@@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1 thank you. He seems to be doing better. We changed something with his medication.
can this apply to cats?
Absolutely, this can apply to cats too. The RECOVER guidelines cover cats and dogs and I will write a blog post this week covering Cat CPR and will publish it on www.firstaidforpets.net
Will such compressions on a dog break their ribs? Particularly a toy breed?
It could damage their ribs, but if they are not breathing then trying to give compressions is their only chance
Helpful video. Can I ask why there are different methods on different sized animals?
I am here because I want to learn more about dogs. I unconditionally love my dog💗🥺

So so sorry😪😪😪
If there is pulse, then you do 4-5 breaths, then what??
Very rarely can cpr save a dog but if it saves yours im happy
Absolutely, but worth a try
what the hell so if theres a dog on the street about to die unless i get permission im not allowed to help. bs
Dog's are property and you could land the owner or yourself with a huge vet bill. Always best to ask first but if you can't ask and still want to help, then good to be aware of the facts. Hope it is helpful Emma
Legally you do need to ask it's owner who will, most likely, be with or near their dog and allow you to save its life!
@@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1 that's essentially the same as saying you shouldn't do cpr on a stranger (human) because you don't know if they have health insurance. like i get what you're saying, but morally i feel an obligation to help the dog regardless of permission, especially if it's a stray
If there’s no pulse you push 30 times then do 2 breaths? Or is it 2 breaths and then 30 compressions?
Give them a couple of breaths first and then start compressions
Hi there thanks for this video. If the dog faints (Boxer) and is on its left side down, is it necessary to roll the dog onto its right hand side first, before applying compressions?
Hi there, because a boxer is a barrel chested dog, it is recommened to have the dog on its back to give compressions. If you go and look at our more recent posts there has actually been a slight update to dog CPR. I hope this helped.
If the dog faints, it will still be breathing, so please don’t give any compressions, they won’t need it
@@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1 thank you.
@@bpenny There is no need to change her to the other side before starting compressions.
Very informative video! I would like to know if it is OK to perform Hands-Only CPR like the Bystander CPR for adult humans if I am not comfortable with performing the rescue breaths. Thanks!
Absolutely! It's better to perform CPR without breaths than do nothing.
Not quite as simple as that unfortunately
@@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1Then please explain for the man or woman as if they were 10 years old.
I don’t think you’re supposed to check pulse anymore. Most untrained people cannot feel it and they waste a couple mins trying which delays CPR. For that same reason they removed pulse checks in human CPR (for the lay person not healthcare provider)
I have also heard about this and i agree (im not a doc or anything) it just waists valuable time
This is right for humans, but not for animals. They still recommend checking for a pulse with dogs and cats as it changes your approach and whether you need to do breaths or compressions
How is it different for NEWBORN PUPS????
Jump to 1:15. Until then it's only advice not to approach a strange dog, or do so without permission.
Is there a specific side the dog has to be for the massage?
It used to be recommended to place them on their right hand side. However the latest RECOVER guidance suggests it doesn't matter
@@FirstaidforlifeOrgUk1 Good to know. Thank you!
How should I position a bichon frise for chest compressions and where should the hand placement be?

What about BREATHS ???? When do u do that???
What if my dog Falls when he got hit in the nose? is he instantly dead?(Happend in my past...)
Dear Shawn, hope your dog is okay. It depends how hard he was hit on the nose and what happened. I am afraid we can't save our pets all the time

He was a little small Chihuahua
i was with 2 sticks in my hand, i hit him without knowing i hear him

After you breathed in the dogs nose you covered the nostrils is that what your suppose to do or was this an accident? Just so I know

How hard to you have to press in comparison to giving cpr to humans?
LH a third of their chest
Extremely useful video but I hope I never need to use it. Thank you.
We let my dog go swimming with me and if she does go unconsious I don’t know how to do the compressions because she’s so skinny and I don’t want to break her bones
Dear DaileyDoodle, it's definitely better to resuscitate a dog and break a few bones than not to resuscitate and let them die! Bones can heal but if they're unable to breathe they will definitely die!
if my dog passes out and i call the 911 would my dad or mom go to jail ( i am 13) because they are not human
they will not go to jail if they are not the ones causing harm, you are allowed to call 911. if an animal is in danger you must call your local emergency vet, not 911
do you inhale or exhale air?
Exhale, you're transferring your breath to them
Is it the same method with small breed dogs?
Yes it is, just blow in a little less and use one hand. You might find it helpful to view our CPR on cats video if you have a very small dog
Thank you our 2 dogs are 7lbs chihuahua mix puppy and 12 lbs 2 yr chihuahua mix
Thank you so much.
You're welcome!
Can you blow there lungs out if you blow to hard ?? I’ve given cpr to a big dog but never a small one

I thought you say dont cause it will bite
An unconscious dog will not bite you
What if i break ribs
That means you're doing it right. When I did CPR on my dog and brought her back I definitely broke some of her ribs.
I am guessing the same would apply to a cat only not as hard. It's good to know this but hooe to never use it.
You can do the same to a cat but definately push less hard.
Whitney Wisconsin already taught us how
MINE DID NOT WORK MY SHIH TZU IS DYING😭😭😭💔💔
As requested, here is my cat CPR video ua-cam.com/video/vAqAxdhPFA8/v-deo.html
Pushing down that hard...wouldn't It hurt the animals rib cage?
Broken ribs are preferable to being dead
Tobias Winter Of course it is, but there are a lot of spiteful people out there who will turn around and sue you even after you save the dog’s life. Some people sue others when THEY’RE lives are saved. It’s crazy. I say do it at your own risk.
What are the odds of resuscitation of a dog that has suffered a heart attack? Do they ever wake back up? 1 in a 1000? 1 in a Million?
I'm afraid it's not that likely but it's worth a try anyway!
Needs better audio.
Thank you for your feedback, I will look to see how I can improve it.
@MrCactus Me loo, LMAO.
Stupid
Means if I see a dog dying don't help because I cant find owner to get permission.
I'm afraid so, legally they're possessions!

I'm so sorry for your loss. My dog is in labor now. Had 2 so far, but I couldn't get the second pup to breathe. She's still whelping. Wish us luck. 🙏
Sometimes you shouldn't wait for permission if you know for certain the dog needs it for their life to be saved
back round music is distracting.
Ok
well one thing i don’t understand why we need the permission!!!
If that is not ur animal and u know how to cpr why don’t save it!!! Ever second is important, we shouldn’t waste any moment just ask for fking permission !!
I am afraid that is the law as dog's belong to their owners. You may also necessitate major veterinary costs that the owner could be liable for
First Aid For Life maybe ur right but i think a life is more important than law.

Old Fashion Mommy nose
Old Fashion Mommy breathe into their nose
Can you just delete the Music? In an emergency when your trying to save a dogs life who wants to listen to music?
