Good points made. But economists would dispute your terminology. Economics includes social costs in costs. Talking about "economic costs" as if that is a thing, displays ignorance of economics. Much of economics looks at costs that are not sent to you as an invoice.

This is not accurate or precise.
All progress requires efficiency gains, otherwise it is a tradeoff (not progress)
To address Mintzbergs "social/quality" bias concerns, we only focus efficiency on the technical structure, not the decisions or the efforts of people.
Lean manufacturing has figured this out. it's not impossible.
