Glad you care.
I agree! Thanks for bringing your wisdom into solving today's biggest challenge.
"you don't bump into somebody at the coffee machine after a zoom call"
Always with a interesting point of view.
Very informative!
Great Professor! I am currently reading "On Management" for a project of my master's degree. What a book!
The idea about quality (you know it when you see it) reminds me of Robert Pirsig 'Zen and the art of motorcycle management '

About the rah-rah: ''You don't designate yourself a leader'' Exactly M. Mintzberg.
Hi Henry, I am a professional UA-cam marketer, I visited your UA-cam channel and saw some problems due to which your channel is not growing. I want to have a brief discussion with you
Christian communities are the best option I have found since the pandemics that fit with what Doctor Mintzberg said.
Bosses are not always responsible to what happened to employees, some employees did not communicate well with their managers. Managers are human beings as well and have their own problems, they can not take into account all the parameters concerning the development of employees. I believe there has been an abuse of some politics concerning wellbeing in companies. A boss who is honest and does not implicate their employees in inmoral or ilegal situations is better than those who are apparently kind and close to their employees. Narcissistic management is quite difficult to detect nowadays.
agreed
A giant in the world of management and strategy
Could anybody point me to more H. Mintzberg vs M. Porter materials towards Strategy? I know their views are more complementary than antagonistic, yet it would help me build a case for my MBA program. Thanks a lot!
In our book, Strategy Safari, in the chapter on the Positioning school, there is a an extensive discussion of Porter’s work on strategy. To my knowledge, he has never commented on my work, except for one dismissive comment in an interview. HM
Thank you Professor Mintzberg for your direct answer! It's amazing to me how well you articulate your thoughts and how you bring complex issues to light through common sense. @@Mintzberg141
So the aspects of the GNH represent the requirements that define the “product”. “Kind of know it” and “judge it” means measuring it to a standard. We always measure, either reporting it on paper or forming a mental assessment. Why? Because that is how our mind works, we want to simplify complexity. The problem with “quality” is its definition. Some good references are found in the work of Philip Crosby and Dr. Juran.
This is not accurate or precise. All progress requires efficiency gains, otherwise it is a tradeoff (not progress) To address Mintzbergs "social/quality" bias concerns, we only focus efficiency on the technical structure, not the decisions or the efforts of people. Lean manufacturing has figured this out. it's not impossible.
Thank you so much Sir 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much Sir 🙏🙏🙏
Everyone leads to some extent in some circumstances...managers do it more often than non-managers, and how it is exhibited, IMO, is by taking responsibility (for people, production and purpose), building relationships (within the team, with the team, with suppliers and customers, with colleagues and seniors) and respecting others: staff, colleagues, customers, suppliers, external influencers (e.g. regulators). With staff this works out hand in hand with the first and second Rs as another trio: defining the mission (or job or work or purpose), equipping the team (for sustainable productivity; that is the people and their effort are sustained and not depleted or 'burnt out') for productivity, including protecting their productivity to achieve the mission, and providing resources. This includes the obvious ones of funds and inputs, but also their own training ( overlaps with equipping the team), team development, and the environment of a productive community. To bring all this together, you need to work on your management craft forever.
in some organizations, there are some non-managers who know so much more about their job and organization, much more than their manager ... they are not managers b/c they dont like the politics of the place; these people are the true pillars, who in time become true leaders: they influence decision making, even mentor their managers in a way that seems strange: they are the go-to area experts that lead projects, implement systems and help craft policy and influence culture
🌹🌹🌹
It is much easier to say it than to do it. Implementing and effectively executing a pathway-paving strategy within an organization can be challenging. It requires careful planning, commitment, and ongoing effort, plus more.
Thanks for uploading. Have learnt a lot by reading your books and papers throughout my MBA program here at The University of Exeter. Looking forward to watching all future uploads.
big brain
No prospective CEO seeks to take on a significant responsibility as captain of his/her industry without an adequate incentive (i.e. lucrative compensation package).
Thank you very much for sharing. From Argentina Misiones.
I couldn't agree more. It's almost comical now how corporations are calling their first line managers 'leaders'. Some of them might be doing some leadership but their primary role is management.
Inspirational
Glad to see at minute 7 that brilliant minds don't necessarily have better handwriting that minds at my level.
I love your work, Dr. Mintzberg. Thank you for your dedication and insight into managing, organizational systems and strategy.
Omg so cool ! I’m learning about management styles and came across this video. I wonder if this is really his UA-cam 😊
The failure of most projects is due to a lack of interest in the analysis technique .
Do you really believe what you say?!! So what is the importance of having management science and studying it in universities?!!
Dr. Mintzberg has published numerous critiques of traditional management education.
fully agree!! if you allow me, professor, one question: can we say, therefore, that the proverb: "what you dont measure, you dont improve" is, in fact, false, according to you? thanks!
Good points made. But economists would dispute your terminology. Economics includes social costs in costs. Talking about "economic costs" as if that is a thing, displays ignorance of economics. Much of economics looks at costs that are not sent to you as an invoice.
Apparently, you left your comment under the wrong video. Perhaps watch/listen to it again?
Likewise it is better to be an entrepreneur in nowadays Cuba than in the USA.
We speak what we think, but act what we feel. Therefore, actions that reflect our feelings and our purpose speak to who we are much more than our beautiful words.
Hi Dr. Mintzberg, I'm a 2nd year PhD student. I'm happy I ran across your channel while studying for my strategic management course. Take care.
There are many nuggets in this approximately one minute Mintzberg discourse. My favourite is: 'Strategy is synthesis not analysis. Strategy comes through a learning process and emerges through a step by step process that comes from an understanding of what is happening in the market.'
Love this video. I'll read more about you
Henry, totally agree to your analysis and points. Living in Denmark I can confirm Denmark is doing very well, relatively. However “what has been done well, can always be done better”. We need more transformation (not just change) and the timing is good. Individuals, organisations and societies have had “eye openers” via the pandemic. Henry, you should come to Denmark again in 2022!
Cool rowing, such a power move!
I am a big fan of Henry mintzbeg and i have read most of his books. However I disagree with him on the issue of bonuses. Workers need to be paid well. If you don't pay workers well they don't perform to the fullest. Also, I think the cultural aspect had to be intergrated in that analysis of bonuses
