The major reasons for the fall in textile exports are the increase in energy prices (gas and electricity both) over the past few months and shortage of gas (driven mostly by lack of fiscal capacity to purchase higher priced gas). Textile industry invariably involves generation of steam, which requires gas.
I am yet to see anybody discussing that in order to remain sustainable the industry is gradually switching over to biomass (especially for steam generation). The same, however, has its own challenges too. That needs planning, guidance and capacity i.e. to ensure a smooth transition. The long-term solution, however, lies only in the development of the indigenous resources (not only oil and gas but also generation of biogas, bio-methane and Bio-Lng and waste to energy projects etc) along with increased and prudent use of the existing power generation capacity instead of indiscriminate switch over to solar; which can only exacerbate the capacity charges issues.
As to the textile sector; while looking for alternate sources of energy (as they are compelled to); they also need to focus on optimizing the energy efficiency of the machines (especially the steam boilers, which is an essential part of every such mill). Therefore, rigorous energy audits also seem essential to identify technical gaps and address them to save energy. It may further help, if these audits are supplemented by comprehensive management and operations audits to possibly increase overall efficiencies of the system (machines and processes both) to save costs.
