Mazda CX-9 vs Infiniti QX60 vs Buick Enclave | TestDrive Showdown

  • Опубліковано 31 січ 2018
  • The premium crossover SUV segment is quite competitive, especially with new entries and recent updates to popular models. We took 3 vehicles to see how these popular models compete, and which you should buy if you're looking to haul 7 people comfortably.
    Special thanks to Park Avenue Infiniti & Groupe Park Avenue for helping us with footage for the Infiniti QX60. Find out more about Park Avenue Infiniti in Brossard, QC here: groupeparkavenue.com/en/infin...
    We knew we wanted to film a Showdown on premium mid-size crossover SUVs after driving the Infiniti QX60 back in November, and continued with the Mazda CX-9 Signature and Buick Enclave Avenir in January, so we made it happen. This is the first episode of TestDrive Showdown featuring 3 vehicles, and also the first episode where all the competitors are the same model year.
    We took the 2018 Mazda CX-9 Signature at $53,100.00, the 2018 Infiniti QX60 Premium at $53, 645.00, and the 2018 Buick Enclave Avenir at $65,070.00 to see how each performs on the road, as a family hauler, and what gives you the best bang for your buck. This episode of TestDrive Showdown covers as much about each vehicle as possible, but we strongly suggest watching each Spotlight episode prior to the Showdown for all the information about each vehicle.

    I really enjoyed this review. I just went from a $91,000 2018 Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription to a $58,000 2019 Mazda CX-9 GT last month and I can honestly say I like the CX-9 just as much. Other than not having the brand recognition it feels just as good as the vehicle I was driving a month ago which cost $33,000 more. I'm loving this ride and both my eyes, wallet, ego and the driver in me are very happy with the switch. BTW the 2019 CX-9 GT and Signature both now have 360 view camera and ventilated seats. ;-)

      That they do! We published an episode of TestDrive Spotlight on the 2019 CX-9 a few months ago highlighting all the changes and enhancements they’ve made to the car for this model year. The other two in this Showdown didn’t see any real change for 2019, so Mazda’s value only got bette than it already did in this episode.

    What most fail to realize about the CX-9 and its turbo 4 is that it generates 310 ft lbs of torque starting at 2000 RPMs. This is important because low end torque is what really matters in these heavy vehicles to get them moving. How often do you really rev your 3 row SUV to 5000 or 6000 RPMs where you would see the advantages of the other 2 in this test? Rarely I think. I drove a 2019 cx9 the other day and was pleasantly surprised how well it accelerates...this engine is tuned very well for this SUV.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 років тому

      Great point! Now that Mazda is offering this engine in the CX-5 we’ve had some comments from viewers saying they need to offer more on the CX-9 now. Overall we found it had plenty of power for what most people need, and that low-end torque as you mention is key!

    My wife and I shopped for 3 row midsized SUV recently, we checked out from CX9, Enclave, Pilot, Highlander & Traverse. We were close at getting Enclave but in the end, for value and money purpose and the deals available, we bought CX9. Yet again I find myself agreed to your review. You are spot on on Enclave and CX9, never checked out QX60 so cant comment on it.

    • @peteg4328
      @peteg4328 6 років тому

      James Raymond I agree. Enclave is really nice, the most comfortable one with most amount of space, but the price is just a bit too high for a Buick badge. I do find it strange how the 3rd row middle seat has no head support. Just weird.

  • @Tonyx.yt.
    @Tonyx.yt. 6 років тому +12

    my favourite is the cx 9, but the less powerful (but more torquey) does fell noticeable less quicker than buick?
    also 51k cad is a very good price, for the same price in europe you can get a top trim 2wd 150hp cx5 or 4wd base trim

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 років тому

      That's pretty expensive over there! The CX-9 didn't feel that much slower, but it would have been good if we could have driven them all side by side to see what the actual performance would have been for each. We're hoping as we grow we can work on ways to film more vehicles at once.

      That's what we found also. Any of these premium SUVs at their base model are quite poorly equipped, you're paying for nothing more than the brand. With the Infiniti it's identical inside and out to the Pathfinder, so we find it's a 100% brand purchase, whereas the Buick at least differs substantially from the Chevrolet Traverse.

Now only 10mpg despite full tune ups, new fuel injectors, etc. The , or remains powerful though. The ride is very rough and noisy. @@mybro727 absolutely true, Chinese in China love the Buick and they are in fact reliable & durable. I'll take the Buick Enclave over BMW X5 for its nice original design, large spacious practical interior ideal for taking family for ride and smooth sailing engine+transmission (not powerful but refine). Americans don't love the Buick nowadays still thinking they had cheap quality materials like back then.
      CX9 is good but it wasted the rear last row seat for cargo at the back. By right, it should utilize all available 3rd row for the seats pushed max to the back sacrificing bootspace for passenger's comfort.

    I can't believe the new Enclave doesn't have the ambient light. My 2014 Enclave is equipped with a beautiful light green ambient light, which I enjoy a lot driving at night.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 років тому

      It is strange, a lot of manufacturers are adding ambient interior lighting and it really improves the interior feel of the vehicle. I believe the QX60 has a dealer-installed ambient light package, and the Mazda's is very small around the centre console. So far the best one we've used was on the 2017 BMW 750Li xDrive, even in daytime the light looked nice. We're hoping to get the chance to have that vehicle for a longer period of time to try out the lighting at night.

      Looks like the 2018 Enclave is equipped with ambient light. Instead of green, it's been changed to moon white. www.tothakron.com/2018-buick-enclave-akron-oh It makes no sense to remove such a great feature on the new generation. The ambient light on my 2014 Enclave runs all the way across the front doors and the whole center console including the passenger side, longest ambient light I have ever seen.

And quality wise the they hold up better than my BMW's do a Mercedes Benz and definitely Audi! All three of those big SUVs are classy and great looking on the outside and especially on the inside - but the Mazda is a little better looking in the inside than the other two and Mazda has improved on their 2020 Cx9 model and it has captain seats and more .....and so you can't go wrong with neither of the vehicles, but it also comes down to which runs better and last better and who wants to spend a ton of money on a car (cars costs too much nowadays and they don't even last a good 10 years which is a rip off)...so in this case since the Mazda is less dollars and I know the Mazda drives good because I've drove one - MAZDA wins.

    I like review shows like this but what most reviewers always fail to mention is reliability and depreciation. Most buyers take reliability and high resale value as the top priority over tech options, performance, and overall value. Toyota’s score low on reviewers lists but for user satisfaction and reliability they are number one and for the consumer that means more.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 роки тому

      It's hard to talk about reliability and depreciation when you have the car for 7 days. Forums or Facebook groups aren't a reliable source to get reliability information from. The best way we can talk about long-term ownership experiences with these cars are through long-term test vehicles, we've had a couple, or if we buy the cars ourselves and do regular updates, which we've also done before.

      This isn’t what ‘bias’ is, just so you know. We were given this trim for the QX60, it wasn’t our choice. We often don’t get to pick the vehicles we’re given from the manufacturers, they typically have one vehicle on their press fleet. This specific Infiniti was one we filmed months before even thinking of featuring it against the Mazda or Buick. Either way, even if we had a fully loaded QX60, we wouldn’t have picked it. The design is dated, and features and design are identical to the Pathfinder. Save the cost of the ‘premium’ brand and get the Nissan if you love the dated feel so much.

    I would likely never use a 3rd row. Also, I find the 2.5L turbo engine on the Mazda too small for the size of the vehicle. Don't like the idea of buying GM. Infinity is not on my menu. I think that for this class I would look at Acura mdx or the Toyota Highlander.

      We definitely agree that the inline 4 engine on the Mazda is a hard sell for most. It's interesting that Mazda was one of the few to offer a V6 with their first gen mid-size Mazda6, yet they've completely abandoned those engines today.

      before skyactive era, mazda use totaly crap ford engines...
      for example, the old mazda 3 with 1.6 103 hp use almost 1 liter/100km MORE fuel than the new mazda 3 with 2.0 165hp and yes that's real data not what the homologation test declared...

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 років тому

      I remember the Mazda6 used to be a badge engineered Fusion also, not to mention the B series trucks and Protogé. Engine tech has certainly improved dramatically over the past decade, I figure we're going to continue seeing much smaller engines being able to produce more power, but whether they'll actually be efficient is the real question. I know a lot of these smaller engines have to work harder on the highways here.

    • @Tonyx.yt.
      @Tonyx.yt. 6 років тому +2

      but the 2.5 liter mazda is not the smallest...
      audi q7 is available with a 2.0 liter turbo in north america (in europe the smallest engine is a 3.0 v6 lol) and the bmw x5 also use a 2.0 liter.
      but the downsizing on north american market is nothing compared to european market, the base engine for ford focus in the US is a 2.0 liter, the base engine in europe is a 1.0 liter 3 cylinder turbo lol...
      but the downsizing mania has already reach his peak, because the new european homologation test begin in a couple of years and is a much more realistic test than actual test, with today homologation standards smaller is the engine, biggest is the difference between declared and real consumption, for this reason extra small engines become very popular between european manufacturers meanwhile japanese brands still use small N/A 4 cylinder engines instead of even smaller 3 cylinder turbo engines, because with similar power, a high compression modern 4 cylinder is more efficient in real world conditions than a 3 cylinder boosted with turbo, the spread between official and real consumption is around 20% for a small car with a modern 4 cylinder but is up to 40% when the engine is a crapy 3 cylinder turbo.
      p.s. sorry for the poem (is probably not extremly fluent but english is not my first language) but that's just for explain the contest of the downsizing rush

      The Mazda engine is rated about the same as the other two in this test when premium fuel is used. Zero to 60 times for all three of these vehicles are within a half second of one another. The turbo in the Mazda gives diesel like torque you have to feel to believe.

    I don’t agree with the seats in the Buick Enclave, I own a 2016 Eclave Leather package, and the seats are like boards wrapped in leather. I liked my 2008 Buick Lucerne, I sat in the seat…. not on it, Buick forgot how to build a comfortable seat. So I drive my F150 everywhere, seats are much better , and the ride is smoother…..

    I bought the Infiniti QX60. I love it and it has the best reliability and name recognition. The CX-9’s interior looks “cheap” in comparison and the Buick is overpriced by comparison.
    The infotainment system of the QX60 does have a lot of buttons! After almost two months, I still don’t know what half of them are for! Lol 😝

      James E. C But that’s the way commercials in Canada pronounce it so how else would they pronounce it? As an American, I am embarrassed by fellow Americans that think they are better than another country that speaks some English words different from the way we Americans were taught. It doesn’t mean the way we pronounce certain words means we’re better than they are! Geesh!

Is that all 300+ million of us? And just what in my comment sounded like I am any better than another country? You took is as though I was criticizing. I was not. Shame on you. The real pronunciation of Mazda is Matsuda. Mazda is an English pronunciation. In the Japanese language the letter “a” is pronounced “ah”. Just like Polynesian.
