My Sons JEEP WRANGLER BUILD is Starting to Come Together! - Roof Rack Install

- It's only been a little over a month since my son purchased this 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon TJ with the intentions of making it more capable on the trail and more self-sustainable for overlanding trips. In this video he and I install a Gobi roof rack with the ladders and wind deflectors and then mount a roof top tent on top... great father and son times in the garage!

The one thing I’m so jealous about is the relationship you have with your boys. How blessed you must feel to have such a bond with them. The build is coming along great you guys
@On Hawaii Time I can appreciate that... my dad and I had a terrible relationship. I didn't speak to him for over 20 years then found out he had Alzheimers. Didn't want any regrets so I reached out... he'd stopped drinking due to the illness and in the last several years before he passed we became really close friends... it was great, but it also made me realize what we could've had all along. @ everyone that still has their parents....go give them a hug.
What a great dad. You also raised a great son. 👍🏼
these videos really make the quarantine less awful
love the TJ vids
The way he said I’ve wanted this box forever reminded me of when I was a kid and got excited to play with the boxes especially a huge one from like a fridge or washer and dryer
Father and son time 👍! Always enjoy your positive videos !
Put the socket into the A-pillar bolts, and gently tap with a hammer to bottom them out in the bolt just before breaking each one loose. This will push any paint out of the way, and allow the socket to do it's job without slipping out and messing up the bolt.
There is a bar that goes across the inside of soft tops....it does help to keep the noise down.
I Love the looks of the Gobi rack I’m super happy with mine!!
You guys are very lucky. You have some beautiful jeeps.
What I'm wondering about: how much of a pain is it to open the soft top? I always thought one of the best features of a Wrangler is the possibility to remove the top. With a rack like this, I guess you have to undo the front bolts and then you can flip back the rack, open the top and flip the rack back forward to secure the bolts. Pretty much impossible with a rooftop tent on it. So by the end of the day you might as well buy a hard top and glue that in place because the reason to have a soft top is pretty much eliminated by the rack.
Personally I would never do that, but of course that's a matter of personal preference. I tow a small camping trailer and therefor don't use a rack which allows me to tow the trailer topless - and that's my very much preferred offroad configuration.
This is the best channel on UA-cam!!
As I tell my girlfriend, "Nice rack!"
A few years ago I stepped out of a Japanese restaurant in Boulder and spotted a Gobi rack on an LJ. I complimented the owner who said her dad or uncle was a Gobi co-owner, so I hope they're USA-made.
Also, you may find that hitch receiver greatly reduces your departure angle, a disadvantage with rock crawling. Ask me how I know.
Good job, guys!
As they were unwrapping there was a Made in USA sticker on the box.
@@willb3018 Perhaps the box was made in the USA?
They’re built in Colorado.
Thanks for the pandemic apocalypse entertainment Brad!
😅Jordan is the kid who wants the fun toy in the cereal. Can't blame him.
Found your channel a couple months ago. Since this quarantine started, I think I’ve watched every video you have made in the past 3 years. Big fan of your channel, I like how knowledgeable you are about off-roading, and your enthusiasm for the nice views you get to see during your travels. I also like how good the camera work has gotten. Great work!
Thank you and great to hear you are enjoying the content.
Love the posts and great everyday wrangler advice. Please keep them coming.
Brad enjoy these times working with Jordan (sons) I remember all the good times helping my son restore his 72 Chevelle. Tha'ts a great looking rack but I thought they took a long time to get them or that only for the LC 80's. Thanks for the videos, I have a wheeler but its 30 years old and very capable can't wait to start some Overlanding!
he is mising one of the most important items there is: A TrailRecon decal.
Check his wind deflector at the end of the video!
Check @11:13
I also saw the one under the “Jeep” on the drivers side behind the front tire!
HAD TO CLICK RIGHT AWAY LOVE TRAILRECON!
Right on!
Daddies boy
The soft top is so loud. Best mod I ever made was adding a brand new aftermarket hard top made by Jeep king / camper king made in Chula Vista CA highly recommend has held up great after three years
That looks so good on it!!
Nice looking mods.... again I appreciate the mistakes being left in...integrity... and makes me feel better when I do my own projects! lol
Very cool! love seeing this 2 door TJ over-landing build! Nothing better than wrench time in the garage with your son!
Great video, thank you!
Best rack made imo
Great father and son projects!!!
PSA if your willing or able to make it to Aurora CO Gobi will install your rack for free. We've had our for a couple years now and it's great
Its always nice to see quality racks! Wish I could run one, probably wouldn't last long through the trails over here in the southeast though... 😒
Another great add on you guys are having to much fun 😂😂 awesome stuff guys as always be safe
Nice rack, I'm talking about the Jeep. Looks like great quality and nice looking, good choice. It must be nice to not have to use step tools and have a helper. Great video. Good luck with your build. Thanks
When you said “that should be enough for you and maybe a girlfriend” he blushed and I laughed so hard 💀😂
I take it that most Jeep owners may have a little trouble when getting the roof washed. In Denver I had a 98 Cherokee where the snow was easy to remove, except for those darn bird droppings, other than that I really love the install.
Once those 35's go on with the lift and rock, it'll be a tight fit in that garage.
Nice! Can’t wait to watch this. I hope Jordan is doing okay away from home. Have a good, Easter from Australia.
Thank you! Looking forward to having him home more once world events calm down.
TrailRecon I fully understand. Just wanted to say that I appreciate your videos and they have given me confidence to work on my truck (and start making videos). Stay safe!
Starting look like a good touring rig guys 😎👍🇳🇿
I’m not even a Jeep guy, but you, Brad and your sons make this channel one of my all time favorites on UA-cam. The content is amazing and it’s awesome to see the bond you and your sons share, which is off roading and wrenching on your Jeeps. Can’t wait to see what’s next for the TJ. Keep up the great work, Trail Recon!!
It's coming together nicely
futher end son is good friend bravoooo
Don't forget about the tent and try to drive into the garage! LOL
Love it father and son project. Nice to have a a big boy to extra hands to work on the Jeep. My son would love to have his red Jeep but his only 7yrs old :) red wrangler is his favorite. Didn’t you have a Gladiator? I thought I saw a video of your that you have one? I remember you have a jku, jl and now Tj i also have these 3 except my TJ is not a rubi.
Congratulations. It looks really good!
It’s obvious that you spent a lot of quality time with your family otherwise I don’t think we would have these videos. Good example for other to follow!!
Cool setup. I see the Gobi has a weight limit of about 600lbs which is nice. Of course, getting anywhere close to 600lbs on this rack, could be a handling issue off-roading and something to be aware of. I also read they are prone to leaking/collecting water in the lower portions of the vertical supports - Overall the design is great, I would want one, and the weight capacity far exceeds the Gavin that I've been looking at, and they are close to the same price. I just worry about the leaking and interior rusting. I don't think you gave the roof rack a fair noise test. Driving around the neighborhood doesn't count, get out on the highway and I think you'll hear quite a bit more noise.
I'm so excited about all these TJ builds! I have a 2016 JK Sport S with a soft top, but my intentions for my build are totally in-line with your son's build!
Specific to this video, I've really wanted a GOBI rack, but (a) they're super expensive, (b) the delivery time is months and months, (c) MOST IMPORTANT for me, which I'm hoping you can confirm...can you still flip down the soft top? Partially or fully?
Great video. I’ve wanted a Gobi rack for awhile now. Best quality on the market.
I’m gunna pull the trigger on one as soon as this Pandemic is over. OIIIIIIIO
Wtf. My Gobi rack didn’t come with a bag!!!!
Great team work.
Man I wanna get one of these for my TJ. One day!! Looks great
Great video! Now we need to figure out how to acquire garages that allow for jeeps with rooftop tents installed!
A taller garage would be soooo nice!
@@TrailRecon Eddy at Wayalife has a 5 or 6 bay garage with high doors and ceiling at the back of his property where he parks all his jeeps. I'm so jealous!
Great video guys. Just a heads up don't put the lift on it inside the garage you'll never get it out. Lol
Loved it!
that thing is going to be dope.
awesome video bro
Thanks for the lesson on Anti-seize. Will be adding that to my toolkit. Hahahah with the RTT, you're OVERLAND OFFICIAL!!
You bet!
Love the TJ stuff
We need more XJ
Y’all ever get around to adding the light bar?
Thank You for this video, I have been waiting 2 months for someone installing a gobi for my LJ... This video made my decision of buying it easier. I was also curious about the wind noise. Great Job!
Am I the only one who thought: “WHAT’S IN THE BOOOOOOOOOOX?!”
Brad, I couldn’t help but laugh and think “I hope they measured the height difference before install!” Because it would be MY luck I’d install a rack in the garage and not be able to drive out without flattening the tires 😂
Awesome always great to have father and son projects. 🤙🏽🇺🇸
O|||||||O
Good video, keep them coming 👍
Thanks, will do!
You should name the TJ the Trail Scout
So glad Jordan has been able to spend more time at home with you working on these projects! Keep 'em coming!
It's been nice, but he may not be home for a bit now.
I wonder if that rack would work on my '03 TJ with 33" x12.50 tires and a 50" piller mounted light bar ??
What a fine young man. I’m sure you’re very proud of him . You two look like twins born 30 years apart rather than father and son.
Only thing that's missing is a dinner from Marco.
I'm missing his camp chow!
He must have ordered that Gobi a couple of years ago. They take forever.
It took four and a half months to get mine. But it was worth it.
It 10 months for my buddy's to show up for his JL.
Yeah. I was wondering how they got it so fast...
Hoping you see this. What rack/cage is that you got on the TJ
What about the bag.
No comments about that?
Very nice
its usually 6 to 8 weeks waiting period for any Gobi. when did you ordered it to receive just on time . love your channel.
Brad swoop in with the dad jokes "You been wanting a box?!"
What happened to keeping it light? Root top tent on a 2 door?
Excellent video I’ve been looking at these.👍 did you go with 40” or 50” light bar option?
It’s looks really good. My son just made it through boot camp yesterday from the Navy.
I just got mine put on last week too. If you did not know just in case they give you $100 off or a free accessory of your choice (even the 265$ ladder) for being military make sure you claim yours if not. I got the free ladder and my backpack came in a separate box haha.
Been following the channel for what feels like years now and this is awesome to see. My 3 boys are 5, 3, and 2 and I'll be in your shoes some day out here in Arizona. Currently have a 96 XJ and looking at a '07 Commander for a more 'family' friendly ride. Keep up the great videos, Brad!
Sweet! How does that work with folding the soft top back (obviously sans-rtt)? Do you have any quick releases to fold the rack back?Would love to see that.
Looking forward to more installs and trips with this thing! (still would've loved to see an LJ build, bummed that fell through ;) )
Zachary Schlecht the rear posts have a pivot point in the video. Unbolt from A-Frame windshield hoop and tilt back. Change top and tip rack back to front hoop and bolt together. Super easy and clearly thought out.
How’s that rack going to go over time with being mounted to both the body and the chassis? It may fatigue and crack as the body and chassis move independently of each other.
I was wondering if the Jeep would go in & out of the garage if the roof was attached.
Hi guys from Scotland I take it you can't drop soft top now?
Will he still be able to take the top down without completely removing the rack?
nope. Looks cool but the best part of having a jeep is the top down!
Is it still possible to take the top down with the rack?
What does Jordan think of pulling a trailer?
Great video! How long did it take for them to get it to you? I know they make them custom.
I’ve waited 118 days so far.
Does it still fit in the garage with the tent installed?
I do wish there was a discount code... 😁
Nice addition to the build. Def enjoying this TJ series. And I cracked up when you mentioned that your son was laser focused on the ‘free’ backpack.
Jeeps looking sharp! Any plans to get the hood resprayed soon?
Yes, it's on our to-do list
I love the stance of his TJ as it sits right now. Its crazy capable without 35s and a lift.
Brad, your son is very lucky to have a father like you and is so nice to see both building together that beautiful Jeep. Great video as usual and thanks for sharing.
7:25
Another great video. I myself have been looking into the Gobi Ranger Rack and a Goose Gear plate system as future projects for my 2-door jk.
Good stuff! Father/Son wrenching time is a gift. Looking forward to the next video! Thanks for sharing Brad and Jordan.
So good to see the family coming to together as a team. Heartwarming.
GREAT video - GREAT to see the relationship between you two - PLEASE more more more videos - how bout one per day?????
Love the father son projects! Great build too. I’m a 2dr guy so I love watching this come together.
..only real Jeep...two door!
Thanks for these videos. I enjoy watching it. 0lllllll0
How many mods is enough? N+1
Ahhhh I want a roof rack but I don’t need one
