- Forty lawmakers sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and IRS commissioner Charles Rettig urging them to review the decision that designated the Family Research Council as an "association of churches." MSNBC's Jonathan Capehart speaks with one of those lawmakers, Representative Suzan DelBene, about why this tax-exempt status is problematic.

Just don't make anyone exempt - why should the rest of the population pay for these special exempt entities?
Yep. Make churches pay taxes too.
Hobby Lobby has church meetings.
@@sr2291 Of course they do. I don’t see how anyone with a conscience would ever go inside their doors.
@@RendaJane I don't go there anymore and I am a hobby person.
@@sr2291 Hobby lobby is known for their discriminatory practices. They should be double taxed for scamming the public.
No no no no. All these "churches" must be reclassified for tax purposes. Thank you, Congress.
Exactly what I was going to say!
No no no no all those churches are enemies of the United States. IRS shouldn't be handling this the FBI should.
What a disgrace, this better get revoked, all so called churches that are political should also have theirs revoked
I agree. As a European, your churches with their private planes and luxury cars is just mind boggling! Jesus never asked for anybody's money. These churches are not Christian..
which is to say ALL OF THEM
Every church is political. The whole concept of the clergy was meant to extend the power of the Pope during the medieval era and sidestep the authority of the old monarchies. Some Islamic nations are theocratic dictatorships, but even the democratic ones are shaped by Sharia law. The Chinese government's mandates are nested in ideals of Daoist scripture to make them more legitimate. It's all about that power and money. This is why a core tenant of America's government was the separation of church and state, both to uphold the freedom of religion but also to keep political thought unbound by religious traditions.
The solution is simple: Do away with ALL tax exemptions for any organization making over a certain amount.
No set the metric at funding ratio. Make it so 75% of donation have to be used for the cause. Not BS Charity dinners, bloating admin pay etc.
Everything should pay taxes anyway. I don't care about Charities or churches. They should all pay taxes.
Why is there so many homeless people? Since churches rake in billions of dollars a year! and pay no taxes!? If these churches pay taxes we could afford to help with the problems! Not sending missionaries to foreign countries to promote your religion!
@@goodbher9244 where humans are, there is abuse of money. Religions are man made. It's a convenient way to committ a crime. Let's talk about their Historic built environment, built by slaves. Start with the Vatican, the Romans killed a popular guy, Jesus, Took the story to Rome and made the Catholic church. Very Maffia like.
I rather do away with all tax exemptions. If you are a charity, you will do it anyway regardless of paying taxes. Donating to charities should be taxed as well. No reason to try to differentiate or verify if it is actually worthy charity or not. Too many opportunities to evade taxes with these "churches".
ANY CHURCH that advocates for ANY political party or candidate should immediately lose their tax exempt status. PERIOD !!!
Good luck with that. They’re one and the same these days.
It's not even so much a certain political party they claim to be affiliated with or put endorse it's the ideology the massive ideologies of craziness they're combining the right to carry a gun with church they're talking about defunding the Democrats defunding this and they're crazy they're not talking about the Bible anymore they're talking about Roe versus Wade they're nuts a bunch of crazy people keep in mind these people are Preppers how sane are Preppers these people have underground bunkers in their property the wackos crazy wacko Preppers waiting for the end of the world looking forward to that day more than likely from what it seems like lots of them are Preppers
The never ending stupidity is mind boggling...
@L F not stupid at all, just more brazen and together with the white proud oath boys supremacists recipe for autocratic rule in the USA.
This is 🤢. We can make our family a church, give it a name, and never pay taxes again??????
Good to know.
At this rate, even the White Citizens' Council to which FRC belonged to, will step-out of the shadows and gain "church status" for tax exemption....
Every family, is different from each other, Millions of "Family Church Unit's", all with different ideology. Why not?
But taxes are good so we should want to pay them
So what's stopping you
John Oliver started a "church" just to show how easy it is
Tax exemption should be abolished for ALL churches. It could be done if the separation clause was enforced.
EVIL
Exactly right ... churches, non-profits, nobody, etc. should have tax exempt status. They all use government goods and services and they all should pay taxes. But especially a sham political organization like this republican fraud.
Christian nationalist = white Christo-fascist are in the process of destroying democracy. A large part of their fascist agenda includes religion used as an excuse to abuse “the others”. They don’t want to separate church and state. They want their idea of religion to rule over everyone.
Family Research Council is a non profit fund raiser not a Church.
Yes please!
The IRS needs to undergo an investigation to determine who made this decision and fire them. If it means firing 100 people, so be it.
Hear! Hear!
I'm guessing it wasn't Lois Lerner.
I agreed!!!! 😊
Having a Trump appointed head of the IRS helped.
I feel like we have these wacky trumpies infesting the government, law enforcement and military like cockroaches. Time to buy some Raid.
Yep
Of course!
They're in the USPO, the Pentagon, the DOJ, the FBI, the EPA, the military...... everywhere. Why aren't they gone already?
No religious organizations should have any form of tax exemption as long as they contribute dark money to political organizations THEY MUST BE TAXED
No church should be exempt from any taxes. Separate church & state.
Gonna have to drop that churchy exemption now that everybody can self-identify as a tax haven.
They asked for it by pushing too far - but this SCOTUS? Who knows
Put it on the ballet. Vote em out.
😂
Won’t happen until a lot of us start trying to get the exemption.
Churches have been getting away with this for decades. We'll never know where the 'tithes' really go.
There seem to be an awful lot of evangelical preachers living high on the hog.

One of the local church rectories here has 8 acres, 10 homes and 10 car garages for 2 priests! Tax exempt. They use fire, police, ambulance, school, water, sewer town services. Free.
Yea... and sometimes, I've seen, are involved in activities that just aren't very "church like".
Churches also usually help the homeless, with housing, a feeling of community, food, clothes and other things. And since they aren't getting taxed, they don't take tax exemptions for their donations... so they can donate more... so it kinda breaks even.... I'm guessing they pay for sewage and water and you just added those in there (hoping no one would notice) seeing as those 2 things aren't covered by church status.
And the other things are kinda small potatoes, as far as costs per person.
Churches do lots of good.... but should have to prove they're Churches... and prove they benefit society
@@DES.REVER.DESIGNS Don't confuse church and charity. Charity work shouldn't be taxed, but religious activities should NEVER receive privilege and exemption like this. So many churches oppress and attack gays, trans people, promote hatred and bigotry, push political agendas, attack women's right to abortion, etc. Churches do a lot of bad.
Totally reprehensible.
@@DES.REVER.DESIGNS Are they? Is that what this Family Research Counsel group is doing?
WTF!?! Why did they give them this status if they're *NOT* a religion. I'm just wondering who the bribed at the IRS to get this through.
It’s not a religion definitely but it’s most certainly a cult. These people are con artists look who their leader is
Scientology threatened its way to tax exempt. They are not a church by any stretch of the imagination. They are a cult with lots of cult real estate.
They claimed their was a Church on their property site.
And a grave. Lol
This is because of who Trump put into positions of power
Everyone involved in giving them this status should be fired, have al their benefits stripped away including their pensions and then be investigated for possible criminal activity.

While it is a scam, they didn't claim to be "A" church, they are claiming to be an "association of", an entity consisting of "members" who can be or are a church.
The problem is the failure to separate church and state, if any church engages in political advocacy they should lose the tax exempt status.
_Preach._
Oh, and no pun intended lol.
spineless stupidity is the success of christianity. Savronola was a priest who was tortured by the church for refusing to name churches after the gangersters whopaid to have them built
"if any church engages in political advocacy they should lose the tax exempt status."
If any Church engaged in POLITICAL advocacy, they have broken the separation of Church and State and should not be tax exempt.
Some of these so-called Churches spew hate speech from the pulpit.
Time to revoke tax free status of all religious entities.
I wonder what the net worth of Romney's church is. I'd guess hundreds of millions.. nope just looked it up $100 *BILLION*
This is exactly the reason why no organisation should be tax exempt. Churches, charities and whatever they call themselves, they should all pay taxes fully.
Yup, and the government could sequester taxes from charities and give them back to other local neighborhood food banks or whatever
Scientology should also have theirs revoked
Westboro Baptist Church as well, but we don't get to individually choose, we can choose not to support them ourselves.
The problem with those guys is not that they can't live in a family of their own liking, but that they are not satisfied until they force us all to be just like them.
If women from 'other' families aren't brainwashed into being helpless submissive servants, then their 'young boys' won't have a pool of victims available to them.

@@tmm6884 Hmm. The entire purpose of the hundreds of laws the Republicans have been passing, to prevent LGBTQ teachers, or students, or parents, from mentioning their families, or showing pictures of their families, or even wearing or displaying 'rainbow' items, or displaying 'safe space' signs---not to mention the laws banning books by LGBTQ authors, or books featuring LGBTQ characters or families---literally all of these 'laws' are efforts to 'force' everyone to conform to the 'desired family structure' and the 'desired gender behavior' and the 'desired fashion sensibilities' of a religious minority.
Tax exemption forces taxpayers to pay for organizations that do not represent all people; end tax exemption for religious and political advocacy organizations.
Germany declared the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to be a cult and decertified them.
Now they pay taxes as a business.

First off, that tax exempt status should be instantly revoked. Second, the person who signed off on this should be fired and investigated for criminal behavior.
Revoke but also change the law, if you are getting a tax break, there should be transparent disclosure.

I lived in Guatemala for many years. There and in other countries around the world churches and religious organizations are run by the cartels and other organized criminal entities. It is the same here! America is not the wonderland "first-world" country the right wants to believe it is.
