The horrific attack in Buffalo this weekend by an 18-year-old White gunman that left 10 people dead was, per the local sheriff, a "straight up racially motivated hate crime." The US Department of Justice backed up that view. They said they're investigating the mass shooting at a grocery store frequented mostly by Black customers "as a hate crime and an act of racially-motivated violent extremism."
What motivated the killer? While the investigation is in the early stages, a manifesto obtained by CNN, attributed to the suspect, expressed resentment that the White population in the United States is dwindling in size.

The saddest part to me, is seeing regular people in Oklahoma talking about "civil war" like we didn't just have the largest domestic terror attack ever in April of 1995. The absolute disconnect in these people's heads is inconceivable.

The problem I have with that is we already tried that several years ago and it didn’t help. And furthermore, I believe liberals do now understand the people on the right pretty well. They are seeking to overthrow our liberal democracy And apparently they will stop at nothing to do that. So my question now is how do we deal with that reality?

Empathy is NOT a problem of the left. We can see things from even our enemy's point of view. We just have the intellectual and moral character to also see how they are wrong no matter how much we sympathize with their concerns.

Now we are hearing one side say that parts do not deserve to be included with this country. Rumors of civil war keeps bubbling up. If history is correct the last event like that was horrendous. There is no country on earth that does not have those few who think those that are different from them should be expelled. Being well acquainted with people involved with the 60s and 70s movements, I know there is a big difference between then and now.
Yes there was violence and violent rhetoric in those earlier groups, but by far the major tactic of protest was marching and sit-ins. Public voices were Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, Rachel Carson and Carl Sagan. Mean people and paranoia were considered dangerous. Education and belief in facts or necessary components of a functional society. Donations primarily went to conservation movements. The major through line of the earlier movements was a desire for a better, more egalitarian democracy and taking care of an Earth so it can take care of us.
The groups today march with with Confederate and Nazi paraphernalia and shout racist chants, block the streets and surround government buildings carrying assault style weapons and often use them. Their leaders spout Christian nationalism, push to ban freedoms while crying they have none. These groups on the right listen to propaganda and paranoia from Fox News and support the likes of Alex Jones and Rush Limbaugh by buying snake oil and fear mongered survival kits. They show unfettered adulation of fascist and autocratic leaders like Orban and Putin to the extent of having them the keynote speakers of their conventions. And they give and give and give money to the people who work against saving the Earth and preach starting a civil war to destroy American democracy.
At least back then most of the rabble rousers believed democracy topped fascism and were working to save an Earth where people were educated, inclusive and kind and would study war no more.

My dad used to go to “Oath keepers” (about 10+ years ago ) and had tried to get me to go many times . At the time it was marketed as Mens Religious group and it used to fill arenas …. Really happy at this point I never went to one meeting. I also happy my Dad stopped going at some point… I honestly never saw it as a Militia group, just a group for right-wing bible thumpers.
This makes me very concerned because the person who placed the backpacks of an explosives during the attempted insurrection in Jan 2021, was never found or identified. Dry run? probably.

Living here in Texas I still hear disdain for government officials over the Waco raid. A lot of people side with Koresh but what they miss is the bigger picture of why the raid happened. When Koresh would go on one of his rants he would preach about end times and how they need to take up arms to defend themselves. He had armed guards on patrols on the compound daily. If you can find some of his music he wrote he even described himself as a 'madman living in Waco.' The guy was completely anti-government and used his followers and 'church' as a front to do his dirty work. I just shake my head and walk away when I hear people defending what Koresh did against federal agents. Not saying they couldn't have gone about it a different way, because they could've. But what Koresh did leading up to what happened is not excusable.

Lastly, going back to reading I also try to read from different perspectives. Once WE understand the WHY behind a person's actions or whatever the case may be, it's a bit easier to cross reference and understand the Truth to some degree.

There is literally no comparison to be made between left-wing and right-wing violence. As he even points out, the left is concerned about classism, racism, xenophobia, etc. Right-wing groups have been focused on racism, antisemitism, and authoritarianism. Leftist groups like the IWW and DSA are aggressively democratic lacking one central leader. Empowering the oppressed emboldens democracy. The right is obviously opposed. It is completely false equivalence. Now you can disagree with some of the methodology used by the left in the fight for certain struggles, and there is even disagreement within the left on how to combat situations. MLK was pretty far-left especially at the end of his life. Despite his non-violent approach to standing up for the poor and racial minorities, he was considered dangerous enough to be stalked by the FBI. Actually, speaking of breaking into FBI headquarters, I think it was 1972 (it was early 70s) that activists broke into an FBI building in Media, PA, and they uncovered documents by the FBI with plans to assassinate MLK. Malcolm X was more of a proponent for violence when fighting for racial equality which was at odds with MLK's stance. So again there were disagreements among the left and the part about the FBI is just to note what they have deemed "extremist" in the late 60s/early 70s. Anyways leftists are fighting against real injustices whether or not you agree with their methods. The right fights for injustices and against perceived injustices against them. They are not by any means equal or capable of comparison. Not even remotely close. There is no validity for the violence committed by the right. They do not bring up any really good points, and we shouldn't be legitimizing their views like this video just did. That is how people turn radical, when we let dangerous conspiracy theories have any kind of legitimacy in media. CNN has always been aggressively centrist to the point where they have skewed facts and history.

I just find it so ironic the sweeping generalizations made about the left, most rooted in cold war propaganda. Like the example that they are undemocratic. Most leftist groups are aggressively pro-egalitarianism and democracy. The internal structures of certain groups on the left are decentralized mostly and run democratically. The IWW has elected positions and each chapter there is not one person leading the group but rather they switch it between people. When making decisions they do so democratically. DSA is similar. A chapter will have committees. All committee members are elected and have term limits. Also there are by-laws (like a constitution) that is directly influenced/written/editted by members. Socialist Altnerative is international and more centralized I think, but still largely democratic in structure. Food not Bombs is 100% decentralized and completely community organized. Meanwhile the United States government has a horrible history of voter suppression such as making polling places less accessible, putting in arbitrary criteria for voting, and gerrymandering. And in 2016, if the US followed anything remotely democratic, Trump would have never been president in the first place since he lost the popular vote. He only got into office because of the electoral college. We also have democrats promoting alt-righters during the primary elections (like with Doug Mastriano) because they see them as easy running mates since they know their centrist policies are largely unpopular. It is a lot of manipulation tactics that are far from democracy. And the "militant" left of the 60s and 70s were fighting against things like voter suppression and the Vietnam War in which the US enstated a president in South Vietnam that was not elected democratically and committed genocide against Buddhists in South Vietnam. The US has supported or provided refuge for many dictators throughout history. A more recent example is Ferdinand Marcos who fled to Hawaii after there was a coup against him when he was dictator in the Philippines. He lived a lavish life while stealing money and forcing the Filipino people to live in extreme poverty. He also put the country under martial law. The mid-80s was when the coup occurred. The US decided to provide refuge. There are many examples of the US either being non-democratic or empowering dictators. So I would really like to hear how fighting against such things is undemocratic.

I must have read a hundred articles attempting to explain to me and help me understand the views and basis of the extreme right. I can't think of a single example of the opposite scenario that I've seen. I don't think the people on the right care to try to understand the opposing viewpoint at all.
