A visit with "Mr. Baseball" Bob Uecker
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- During six undistinguished seasons in the major leagues, Bob Uecker never played an inning for the Milwaukee Brewers. But during more than half a century as the team's play-by-play announcer, he has become a mascot for the game - and for the city of his birth. He talks with "60 Minutes" correspondent Jon Wertheim about his love for baseball, and how it has manifested in his adjacent careers as actor, commercial pitchman, and TV talk show guest.

There's no crying in baseball. Except today. We miss you, Mr. Baseball. 💙💛
That is exactly perfect.
perfect
48 years old, Wisconsin born.
Bob has been my whole baseball life.
Falling asleep to his calls as a kid on West Coast games.
Robin’s 3,000 hit.
Molitor’s 39 game hitting streak.
13-0.
Sabathia in ‘08.
Everything Milwaukee Brewers baseball has included him.
I love the man.
His voice is my warm blanket.
Truth! I am from Iowa and my grandparents live in Madison. I can remember as a little kid listening to him. When I went to college I was able to listen to him on XM along with today. He is all I know for Brewers Baseball.
Best comment ever❤️
Even better:
AM radio static crackling on the radio during a Midwest summer thunderstorm while listening to the game (and driving at night)
This is how I felt about Skip Carey and the Braves.
Yep! @poolhall9632
we can surely appreciate their appreciation cuz like you said it was Skip, alongside Ernie Johnson and Pete Van Wieren with my clock radio turned down super low and hidden under my covers, so my Dad couldn't hear me listening to those late games out on the west coast.
RIP Bob. You were a legend and made the game the beautiful game it truly is.
A true legend. Whether it was a good or bad game for the Brewers, he always makes it entertaining to listen to the game.
This is a good point. Bob made baseball entertaining, the _Major League_ movies brought home his humor to everyone.
r. i. p. "Mr Baseball" Bob Uecker - may his memory be a blessing to all.
Rest in Peace Mr. Uecker.
You ARE the voice of the Brewers forever.
Bob Uecker is a baseball National Treasure
60 Minutes, THANKS SO MUCH for doing this interview, especially now that we have lost him. 😢 RIP
Bob Uecker, Harry Carey, Vin Scully, Harry Kalas, Ken Harrleson, Joe Castiglione, and many others are the voices of summer for us baseball fans. For us fans, they are as much a part of the team as any player. We remember them fondly.
For me it was always Harry Carey, as a Chicago North sider. Later it was Skip Carey when the Braves were World Series contenders.
r. i. p. "Mr Baseball" Bob Uecker (and all the other "old timers" that have passed)
I'm a 41 year old man. Born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. As a kid, my parents would let me fall asleep with Bob's calls of Brewers night games on my old GE clock radio with it on "sleep" mode. Bob was my bedtime story teller and the stories were Brewers baseball. Even today as an adult his voice and his calls are still therapeutic and comforting to me.
Exactly the same situation for me. But from Port Washington.
It's tough to watch this interview knowing that it would just be a few months. Thank you, Bob, for your great American life.
Heartbroken. The voice of my childhood in the '90's... rest peacefully friend.
I grew up in Milwaukee (born in 1950) and attending games at Milwaukee County Stadium; we ALWAYS brought a small battery powered radio to watch the games and LiSTEN to Bob announce…..what a memory .
For all of his wonderful silliness, Bob also knows his baseball. His ability to explain the strategy side is really impressive.
I always loved Bob. I love him even more as someone living with ALS. Thank you, Bob.
Sadly, Bob & his wife lost a daughter to ALS in 2022.
@@rtl1392 heart breaking. Thanks for sharing. I didn't know that.
90 and going strong! I loved Mr. Belvedere (my introduction to Mr. Uecker). So glad he's still around and still announcing for the passion of his life!
I was very young and watched the Brewers because of Charlie Berens and Ueck and this past year I got into Mr.Belvedere,it has held up so well.
He loves the Brewers but everything that he has done, even WrestleMania is point to baseball and the Brewers
I'm sure I will bawl when this guy leaves us. I grew up watching those old Miller Lite commercials and him being an Indians announcer in the movie Major League. As a sports fan, he's a huge icon and irreplaceable in my opinion.
... and this media segment diminishes him.
Bob is baseball. Bob is all that baseball should represent, but isn't.
That day has sady arived today my friend. January 16th, 2025 he has passed away and I am crying already.
@@TheSuperReviewShow
Since I don't watch baseball anymore. That means now the last of the non preening, non self-important, humble and non egotistical baseball greats is gone. For me baseball is as dead as old NFL standards and good men are.
I really like Jeff Levering, I hope he's Bob's replacement. The 2 younger men I don't even remember their names but I do remember that they're banal and boring. Jeff Levering and UECK were good in the booth together on the radio. I'm going to have to find a way to hear their first broadcast of the season I'm sure they'll dedicate it to Ueck
I knew when the Brewers lost that last game to the Mets, when Bob said, "That one had some sting on it" that that was going to be the last time I'd hear Ueck again. I knew he wasn't well, and I dreaded this day. I feel like my grandpa died.
Same. We lost an icon. He'll never be replaced.
It's not even been 48 hours since you left us, and we're STILL remembering you!! #LongLiveUeck
I'm a diehard Cubs fan who moved to Wisconsin 12 years ago. Every spring, I make a trip over to Milwaukee to watch a Brewer game.
I'm not a Wisconsin sports guy by any stretch of the imagination, but man...they really do love Brewers baseball. RIP to a legend
A human treasure. Bless Bob Uecker.
To be honest, I can’t even talk about Ueck without thinking about my Dad and how much i miss him… Thank you so so so so so much Ueck. I personally never cared about baseball but listened to the home game radio broadcasts every chance I got… or remembered there was a game.
"Juuust a bit outside."- Bob Uecker RIP. 🕊️
Funny as hell. I often go on You Tube and watch his Tonight Show clips. Great story teller. One of the best. Only one who was better at telling stories was my beloved Vinny.
I absolutely love Bob Uecker. One of my favorite story tellers and I grew up with Vin Scully. He truly is a legend.
I’m 53. I’m lucky as hell to have had listened to him on the radio (usually instead of tv).
I know what lots of Dodgers faithful knew with Vin Scully. Some radio guys absolutely -are- baseball.
I lived in one of Chicago's suburbs for over a decade, and even though I'm a Cubs fan, I still loved tuning to AM 620 and picking up fuzzy reception from Milwaukee and hearing his voice.
I remember his Tonight Show appearances, he was always great and you could tell Johnny loved having him there.
Johnny would about laugh until he cried. Great clips of him on YT that you can still watch.
We love him here! Sometimes when the game gets slow, that’s when he’s his funniest. I wish I would have written down some of those stories he has told. And for a guy that’s 90, he has kept that distinctive radio voice and the memories of the old days are still clear … and funny!
@@wcarreras And now he has left us … just 10 days before his 91st birthday.
I love Bob. He is an American icon and one of the greats.
"icon" is for describing ordinary standard barely above the crowd individuals. It's a way overused word in today's pop culture. Bob Uecker is a true LEGEND!
I could never forgive that the Seattle Pilots were moved to Milwaukee and became the Brewers. But, the Baseball Gods and Goddesses knew the move had to happen so that the world could have the legend known as Mr. Baseball, Bob Uecker! I have enjoyed Ueck for decades. I have patterned my humor on his own self deprecating style. He brings millions of people, great joy every day. Love ya Ueck!
My entire life Bob has brought me into spring and sent me into fall. He made great days with brats and beer greater, and he made hard days a little bit easier. Even when I moved away from Wisconsin, I got a streaming subscription so I could keep listing to Ueck! His play by play isn't what made him great, it was his ability to tell a three-hour story while ALSO calling a baseball game that made it great! If you've never been to a Brewer game, do so while Bob is still behind the mic, it's one of the only places you will see people AT the game with earbuds in LISTENING to Bob call they game! It's going to be a sad day for baseball when he calls his last game.
I listen to all the Brewers games on the radio. Uecker has cut back on the number of games he calls but hey he’s 90. I will be very sad when he retires. Baseball announcers GOAT.
Universally loved by baseball fans. We had an announcer for the Phoenix suns for 51 years. Al Mcoy. He enjoyed playing piano and the occasional cocktail. I moved to the valley in '87 and never imagined a sun's game without him. He passed away last September at 91. Enjoy Uecker while you can. Legend.
Bob…you just made our world a better place. We will miss you dearly. 😢
Curtis 58, Dodger fan. I often watch Uecker clips on UA-cam during his Tonight Show visits. The best.. I'm a huge huge huge fan.. of the man.
I've never followed, understood or been a fan of baseball...but I LOVED this man. His appearances with Johnny on the Tonight Show were absolute perfection in every single way. And his bone-dry humor made British comedians look 'soaking wet' by comparison.
I don’t know much about this man but hearing his voice over the radio here in Milwaukee is a Wisconsin tradition that even i cannot imagine being without. he has my upmost respect for staying with us even when better offers were on the table. He’s not just mr baseball, he’s Mr. Milwaukee. I hope and Pray that the brewers deliver him a championship trophy before it’s too late. But if that day never comes, I thank him for the memories.
RIP Mr. Uecker - all of Baseball, us players, us coaches, us 53 year old kids who have always loved you….. we will miss you dearly.
Grew up in Port Washington, Wisconsin. I went to bed listening to Uecker many many summer nights. I still play old games on my computer to fall asleep to .... unless they're close haha ... then I lose sleep. I'll miss you Bob. I'll miss ya every damn day man.
I remember listening once to a Brewers game where they were running a promotion at the game for cocktail umbrella drinks. It was late in the game & the Brewers were down by a lot. So Uecker goes into this bit about uses for the umbrellas. He said people could put them on their ears to keep their ears dry when they take a shower. He went on & on, it was so funny. Even though it was a bad game Uecker made it worth listening too.
MY OH MY .... No one could ever replace Bob ... he was the Greatest Show on Earth !
A tear comes to my eye every time Bob says, "So long everybody, your listening to the brewers radio network." because I truly think it will be my last time hearing it live. I truly love Bob.
Indeed. Been listening to him call Brewer games since I can remember, around age 4. He is a national treasure!!!
Bob Uecker for Milwaukee and Jack Brickhouse for the Cubs. Carey was always Sox to me. Vin and Ernie, Joe and Al. All legends that made the game better. Thanks you one and all.
He was Milwaukee through and through. Thank you Bob for your humor and love of the game. Rest in Peace
Bob is an American treasure and legend
I listen to most of the Brewers games. I was stunned, shocked and sad when they lost the Wild Card game. I felt Bob's sadness and heartbreak.
The best radio announcer around!(Even appreciated by Cub fans)
Mr.Baseball, Legend!
My exposure to Bob Ueker was in the Miller Lite commercials and on Johnny Carson. I thought he was just a funny guy. It wasn't until later in my adult life that I learned about his baseball career. I would have loved to spend an evening listening to Bob Uecker and Yogi Berra reminisce about baseball. THANKS for this visit with Mr. Baseball!!
I just looked up Ueker today to see when he passed away. And my jaw dropped when I found out that he is not only alive and well at 90, he's fkn still working games as a broadcaster. This is unbelievable and has to be some kind of world record. Good for you Bob. You will truly be missed by all of baseball, not just Milwaukee fans, when you leave the game.
Very nice interview and tribute in effect to Mr. Baseball, he made life better and more fun for us.
There is only ONE Uecker. A superb ambassador of the sport.
Mr. Uecker was my father‘s best friend. My father never cries, but when I told him about Mr. baseball‘s passing, my father teared up and didn’t want to talk about it because he loved him so much. Rest in peace we will always remember you ,and we will always love you ,Mr. baseball….
Holy crap he looks great! My first exposure to him was watching Mr Belvedere as a kid
My Pa in Rapids taught me from a very young age that Bob Uecker is the voice of real baseball. RIP Pa.
My wife, our two boys and I would go to , at that time was called county stadium, and sit in the outfield bleached seats. I would take a radio along so I could watch the game live and listen to Uecker.
I love Bob Uecker, always have, always will.
That was one of the best Miller light commercials they showed where Bob says “I must be in the front row“ and they cut back to him & he’s up at the top of the upper deck, screaming “he missed the tag, he missed the tag!”
Been listening to the Brewers games for a long time. Winning or losing it's always 3 hours of entertainment with Bob. I couldn't imagine a Brewers game without him.
Truly Mr. Baseball
The voice of my summers and a huge influence on my sense of humor. He is beloved in Wisconsin
RIP MR BASEBALL, THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING...
Rest in Peace Bob, your voice will forever be in our minds. Jan 26th, 1934 - Jan 16th, 2025.
Icon
This Cub fan loves that man and all he's done for baseball.
Yes, I was heartbroken for him and the Brewer fans this year 😔.
Go Cubs
Hard to say goodbye. I can't do it, he will always be Mr. Baseball. He has a new, higher fan base.
An amazing and lovable guy. I only learned about Bob, for the first time, because of his passing.
85 years ago there were 3 little boys who played together in their neighborhood but would grow up to change sports in Milwaukee. Herb Kohl inherited his father's grocery business, expanded it to include department stores, then sold it and bought the Bucks to keep them in town. Bud Selig inherited his father's car dealership, expanded it, sold it and bought the Seattle Pilots and brought them to Milwaukee, renaming them the Brewers. Then there was Uke. Baseball in Milwaukee won't be the same without him.
Herb did not live in the same neighborhood as Uecker or Selig.
Bob is the only good one. Maybe the buck guy. Forget bud selig. Good comment tho
Every time I see Uecker get interviewed I can’t help but think of the Artie Lange/Norm stories😂
"I knew that guy could cook!"
He is now in the front row
Even us Cubs fans love Uecker. I wish we had him. Favorite Belvedere episode was him buying a pinball machine.
As someone who lives in Milwaukee if you are in the area go to a brewers game you won’t regret it but don’t forget it’s Wisconsin we do baseball different
A National Treasure 🙏 RIP Mr Baseball
While it's usually heartbreaking to be a Brewers fan Ueck makes it less sad. Let's get him a World Series while he's still here!! If you've never been to a Tailgate at a game put it on your list!!
Seriously, I didn't know he was still alive. I'm glad he is. His personality surpasses his ability, but that is just fine. One of the most iconic lines from a movie ever: JuuuuUUUst a bit outside!
I traveled from NC to Milwaukee just to see and meet Mr. Eucker a few years back. Being generation X I grew up with Harry Doyle and Mr. Belvedere. He did not disappoint. He was so nice and so funny. It was everything you'd ever hope for...God bless him.
The timing of this couldn't have been better. RIP Ueck
We are so blessed in this country to have so many talented sports announcers. They become like family and make the games so special. Kudos to Bob and RIP to to Al McCoy and Jim Donovan.
RIP Bob!! I know you were more well known as the baseball announcer for the Brewers, but I’ll always remember you as George Owens from Mr Belvedere.
Me too 😢😢
Thx bob. Will be missed. My childhood was littered with your precious words.
RIP Mr. Baseball. The game will not be the same without you.
R.I.P. Mr. Uecker, you and your voice and humor and so much more will be missed.
The first former player name I learned was Bob Uecker, Mr. Baseball. I believed he was the best player ever to have that nickname. Now, I believe might have been right. RIP, sir.
R.I.P Mr.uecker Mr Baseball ⚾️ there will never be another one like you Mr Baseball ⚾️ thanks for the tremendous memories God bless you we will all miss you deeply 😢
Did what he loved, with who he loved, up until the end. We should all be so lucky.
Absolutely love Bob Uecker!!! I used to watch him on talk shows, so so funny!!!
Do you know the easiest way to catch a knuckleball
Chief Wahoo and the Cuyahoga Warriors are grieving tonight. Thanks for all the great laughs, Bob! You did good.
A national treasure and a fine ambassador for the game of baseball, Bob Uecker.
One of the truest voice of baseball... a legend among legends.
R.I.P. Mr. Bob Uecker.
"Just A Bit Outside"
"Ball Four"
"Ball Eight"
6:01 “There’s speculation that the heartbreaking loss may have marked Uecker’s last game as an announcer.”
I hate that this actually came true. R.I.P. Mr. Baseball
AWESOME, pure AWESOME!!! And he looks magnificent. I've never followed baseball, and my familiarity with Bob Uecker came from "Mr Belvedere", but he was perfect for the role....indeed, probably the best actor on the show Perfect unaffected contrast to Christopher Hewitt's officious Mr. Belvedere. Wow, what a great sense of humor and able to be so self-depricating! God bless him!!!
His self-deprecating humor along with Rodney Dangerfield were classic 80's
Good Times!!
This was beautifully done. Thank you. 💙💛
RIP on behalf of EVERY baseball fan in Wisconsin!!!
RIP Bob Uecker. You will be missed. From a Pirates fan who moved to MKE in 1998
Love hearing his baseball stories. Interesting & entertaining. Funny, dry wit, makes me laugh. Thank you sir!
What a Milwaukee treasure Mr Uecker is. God Bless You Sir !!
We all want Uek back in that booth! No one will ever replace him.
I actually have lot of baseball cards of him in a Cardinals uniform. lol, no one else wanted them in those days. 😉
Saw him play when he was in StL in the 60's, too.
When I was putting together a 1962 Topps set, the Uecker rookie card wound up being one of the most expensive and toughest cards to find from it.
@@daveidmarx8296 Braves card, right?
A true baseball legend and announcer. I can say as being a Brewers fan myself, Brewers baseball will not be the same without Mr. Baseball. He is the voice of Wisconsin summer always. Great story as always and I enjoy watching you every Sunday morning.
We’re all crossing our fingers to hear one more season with Uecker!!💙💛💙💛💙💛
An American Treasure! Had a chance for a couple seasons to listen to him on the radio for the Brewers. You'd almost root for a rout because the jokes would then come out. Either way you'd get a wonderfully called baseball game.
Uecker for president!!!
Of the world!!!!
If only our president was HALF as cognitive as Uecker.
After the last 2 he might be too young.
Did it until the end!!!
Love this man. RIP
