- The press conference at the GP Aperol di San Marino e Riviera di Rimini saw the likes of Valentino Rossi, Marc Marquez or Jorge Lorenzo asked who they rate as the greatest rider, Giacomo Agostini or Mike Hailwood, with some interesting answers being offered.

Respect to Lorenzo admiting that an opponent of him is one of the greatest! U man have balls :)
+thanosguitarist not one of the! The greatest!
Sam Rad Yo i agree with you mate :)
+thanosguitarist Good times, now Lorenzo is just a dick head like Marquez.
Gramax Now? Lorenzo has always been the biggest twat and the most hated rider in motogp.
Sam Rad Thats true.I agree with you
It's amazing that Jorge Lorenzo recognises Valentino Rossi's greatness!
duelling and sometimes winning against him, put himself (lorenzo) in the upper class......
petty psychology.
He always has.
Respect for Lorenzo
+fandigolf
*typical mainstream Jorge hater spotted as these people can't bear his appreciation. Pathetic.
Ye read what he said now about Valentino. He's a hypocrite. Pathetic.
duelling and sometimes winning against him, put himself (lorenzo) in the upper class......
petty psychology.
Jorge said it well. Valentino is the greatest of all times, the GOAT.
He´s the living grandmaster - let´s denifine it like that ;)
Not even greatest of his time. And obviously, you are one of those ignorants who know nothing about history and yet they raise an opinion.
@@ducedevlstear2471 who is the greatest of his time then?
@@mayukhsharma8465 Marquez & Doohan easy. And I put Stoner above Rossi any day.
@@ducedevlstear2471😂😂 which weed?
Respect to Jorge :)
Big respect to Lorenzo for recognising Rossi whilst being able to beat him. Rivals at a time that Rossi, Lorenzo and Stoner were absolute juggernauts! I think people forget just how good Rossi was.
Ago and Hailwood, did it for the love and ill always respect what they've done for this sport. No corporate sponsors, no big money, just pure motorcycle gods!!!
Rossi took on so much more, he took the sport to unparalleled stardom and made the sport I love, the biggest its ever been, the phenomenal wins, the antics, the celebrations, he did it all and won the world over! He is the Bruce Lee, Muhammad Ali, the Michael Jordan of motorcycle racing. The god of speed!!!!
Lorenzo holds the biggest official timing lead, but remember 03 Phillip Island when Rossi got a 10 second penalty and decided to beat that on the track and pulled a 15 second gap to beat Capirossi!? There's no words for how good Rossi is,was, will forever be!
Agostini
I have seen nobody like The Doctor.
Respect to Lorenzo for saying Valentino is the greatest
that front picture shows the greatest so far and the greatest of the future!
There was no one like Rossi, but there is now no-one like Marquez. A worthy rider to take over Rossi's mantle.
What a privilege it is to get to see both ride at the same time.
Altaf Patel yes man!
Huge respect for Jorge!!! He himself is one of the great riders of MotoGP!
Ago and Mike were both fine racers. Mike, more than Ago, started in the earlyish post-WW2 period when there was far less money in the sport, and he developed the ability to win on just about any machine. His father Stan gave him opportunities that were denied to most riders of his time and these honed his ability to ride anything. Ago is of course remembered on MVs, which were out of reach to most riders too. I have seen Mike, in his wilderness years late on, riding a G50 at Snetterton, outbrake rider after rider at the approach to the hairpin there at the end of the Norwich straight, and end up winning. Mike had great courage and ability, and through his Grand Prix circus years had learnt to get the best out any bike, a camel or an MV. To me, he was the best, but I will say that Ago was a great sportsman who was up there with Mike. I feel that each would say the other was the best, they were both gentleman racers. Anyone who has seen either of them race has been privileged.
In the music world it was Lennon/McCartney
On track the equivalent was Agostini/Hailwood.
Well said
Agostini ha vinto 10 TT, la Daytona contro kenny roberts alla prima gara con una Yamaha 750 2 strokes, 120 e più gare, non esisterà mai più nessuno come lui
I saw both race at Cadwell several times when I was a teenager. I used to travel there on the back of my boyfriend`s velocette racer. Linda
To do what he did on his '78 & '79 TT comeback after so many years away - awe inspiring.
What is this? Asking the number 1 who is the number 1? 46 is number 1, of course.
+MrGilRoland What are you talking about? They asked Giacomo or Hailwood. Not who is number 1...
Giacomo Agostini is number 1 -.-
Haha😂 youre right 👍👍Rossi is the goat!
Ago has the most wins, but I think Hailwood was the greatest rider to ever throw a leg over a motorcycle, unrivalled talent and natural ability.
I was watching bike racing since the mid-60's, when I started to understand the motoring world. The question is impossible to answer for me. But, those are the two best! It's funny, watching the puzzled faces on today's young racers, but, they cannot be blamed for know knowing. They are young men with other things on their minds.. Not surprised that Rossi knew EXACTLY what the question meant, and I can't blame him for his very honest answer, either. Lorenzo also deserves a special salute for his answer.
I would have to say Mike, his comeback to the TT after 11 years away was incredible, and one of the most iconic moments in motorcycle racing history. But I wouldn't expect any of these guys to be aware of that sort of thing, they're racers, not historians!
And he broke the lap record!!! At the T.T.!!!! If you take a look at his race records that speaks volumes. There have been so many top, top riders overs the years, many nationalities, but i feel Mike Hailwood does top the lot. The question was a little unfair as it was so long ago.
If you don´t say "Agostini", you won´t get a handshake from him at the next race meet. Ago is very much alive....and he has stated that Rossi, like himself, can win only if he has the "perfect bike".
Hailwood, on the other hand, could win on any bike, even at 40 years of age and coming off a 12-year lay-off. That´s the mark of "true greatness", statistics not-withstanding.
***** Ago won on MV and Yamaha. Casey Stoner won on Ducati (2007) and on Honda (2011). Asked why Rossi kept complaining about Ducati when he rode for them , he replied: "....you have to learn to ride the bike!". Hailwood never complained about the ill-handling Honda 500, on which he won his last championship (1967). Honda retired in 1968 to develop its faulty bike, yet paid a full-year salary to Mike to dissuade him from going to other teams. He simply was one-of-a-kind.
***** "nationalistic fanaticism"?....I have not a single drop of english blood running thru my veins, but I do have about 25% Italian blood, I dig spaghetti, and love italian operas.....and Sophia Loren, of course. With this aside, I will name my top 5 riders of all time, based mainly on pure riding skill:
1.- Mike Hailwood
2.-Jarno Saarinen
3.- Mick Doohan
4.- Kenny Roberts
5.- Valentino Rossi
Marquez and Lorenzo may get in there....only time will tell.
Absolutely agree!
Maybe in 50 years later there will be MotoGP conference and the interviewer ask..Valentino or Marquez and why? And the future riders will got difficulties to answer.
Vale all the time
not difficult.. Vale is greater than Marc
Well said lorenzo..
I can understand why they chose Ago - nearly always because they had met him or knew him or in the case of Rossi because he is an Italian! I saw Ago and Hailwood race on many occasions. Ago was the master of precision - Just impeccable and at the Ulster GP taking each corner in the same identical way every time, utterly amazing - however I believe that Hailwood was the more creative and versatile of the two. Hailwood could ride anything from a Mondial to an MZ and still win - including the camel of a 500 Honda. One has to just listen to how they both rode - the exhaust notes to hear how Haliwood got more out of a bike than Ago. Having said that - due to better opportunities in modern time, Rossi is brilliant and all respect to Lorenzo for saying that - but one has to agree that Marquez is likely to outshine even him - just my personal opinion... :-)
I agree, I think Doohan is often forgotten, he won five championships in a row with a leg so badly damaged he used a thumb rear brake.
some of these comments are crazy. Why do some of yall hate on Vale my goodness man. I've seen him ride with bike issues, perfect bikes, fight through the field, wet,dry ect in this sport to get to 9 world titles and over 100 victories is Tremendous, Yea there are great riders now i.e. Lorenzo, Marquez...and they are giving him a run for his money, But what does he have to prove to them or anyone else is numbers, the tapes, and fan base around the world, show a lil more respect, Even Jordan Played Against Excellence.....
I never saw either of them race, either, but for what it's worth, things I've read several times lead me to believe that Agostini himself begrudgingly acknowledged Hailwood as simply the better rider.
Suppo... just proved once again what kind of personality he has. "Giacomo - no doubt". And then a direct look at Rossi. Like saying "Oh no I'm not going to give you that pleasure".
Frost and silence fell in the room immediately afterwards... thankfully to be re-warmed by Jarvis' warm smile as he remisisced the fight he saw between Hailwood and Agostini.
Rossi also won five championships in a row. But when that ended he came back even stronger and defeated some young, talented and very strong riders.
Hailwood was the greatest of all time. He could win everywhere, road or purpose built and he even won at the iom with the greatest comeback of all time. How do you top that?
imgur.com/a/RFU3lnA Maybe like this?
(from an Italian)
By starting last in the most successful grid of all time in 2015 and finishing fourth on a track which is supposedly hard to overtake.
Hailwood was great but he pushed too much and dangerously and he died, is that your meaning of great or is that stupidity?
@@billadmond9450 Hailwood and his daughter were killed in an RTA when a lorry drove in to them. Nothing to do with his "stupidity" you twat!
Bill Admond to see someone’s greatness is when they died of what they loved to do and remember
2021 during MotoGP midseason break rewatching this...
Mike the Bike ... GOAT ... who else could take 12 years out of Motorcycle racing and win at his first attempt back at the IOM TT ... Hailwood was a genius ... I hope the movie that Jackman wants to make on Hailwood gets made and people get to realise just how great he was
i'm with jorge on this one! :)
Que gusto cuando había buen rollo entre Valentino y Marc!!! Ojalá lo vuelva a haber!!❤
That was a moving statement by Jorge. Truly impressed with him responding that way.
Respect to Jorge !
this could be judged a beautiful sport even only considering that men battling for the victory, despite the will to win and the episodes they went thru, have so much respect for each other...unfortunately there will always be haters who ruin this inspiring atmosphere..
When valey & marc still in good terms at this time. They seems happy
An old git who is honoured to have seen both. Racing each other. Hailwood could ride ANYTHING and win. The GOAT. Followed , closely by Vale, and Saarinen. [Young 'uns need to google him] lol
Rossi is the only rider in the history of the sport to win multiple back to back 500/Moto GP titles on 2 different manufactured bikes. It has NEVER been done befor or since.
Ago did in 350cc in 73 with MV in 74 with Yamaha.
@@zacharyradford5552 Fair point but I was referring to multiple top flight (500cc/Moto GP) titles.
@@sonicboove4865 Geoff Duke did it Norton and Gilera but one year apart not back to back
@@mikefry6765 So Geoff Duke hasn't done it, nobody has.
Eddie Lawson did it between 88 and 89 on a Yamaha and Honda respectively.
I think that Ago was the greatest in the past... But bike racing changed allot! You cant compare Ago with Rossi, to many has change... But in the modern racing no one can beat Rossi... He won 125, 250, 500, 1000cc, 800... The man who can beat those statistics is Marquez, but he has still a long way to go!
Agree that it is difficult, if not impossible, to compare riders of different eras.
I can't help thinking that modern riders have it easier though - the sport is so much safer, much more professional, and the combination of modern tyres and traction control is incredible.
Contrast that with lining up on your wire-spoked wheeled, cable drumbraked machine with skinny treaded tyres, knowing that there was a good chance that a rival, or a mate, or perhaps yourself could be dead or seriously injured by race end.
Well, if you had to build your own bike, and you had to do more than pavement, it would be Dick Mann. He won Motocross, TT, half mile, mile, short track, Road Racing and numerous ISDT medals too, just for a hobby. He built and maintained a lot of his own bikes. That is depth. From 1957 to 1973, Mann finished inside the AMA Grand National top ten every year but one. Yes, he beat Hailwood when Hailwood was on a BSA at Daytona in '70 and Mann was on a Honda, the only one to finish, and the only one not tuned by Honda's Nakamura. . Mann won again the following year on a BSA at age 37. Go figure.
Rossi, Lorenzo, Marquez we all should feel so lucky to live in the same period as they are and could see them all fight together...;)
I saw them both at the TT and have great memories.I always favoured Mike but to be honest there was so little between them. But they had great respect for each other and were good friends.People ask if Hailwood was the greatest ever rider and my opinion is he was the greatest man ever to race a motorcycle.
It’s not a popularity contest. It wasn’t about who you LIKE more the question was who’s the BEST and cold hard facts point to Ago.
Hailwood was better than Agostini but the real GOAT is Valentino Rossi and full respect to Lorenzo for recognizing that
There's always the greatest in each era.
I loved both of them and to me it's impossible to judge but I always say even if Hailwood was not the greatest rider he was the greatest man ever to race a motorcycle.
Spot on
The words of a true sportsman Jorge Lorenzo !
There's a saying that only 10 riders survives to the end of season out of 25 in the time of Agostini and Hailwood..
Those bikes were Raw.. No traction control, No linear power Dilivery like 4 stoke motor.. Raw power of 2 stroke engine..
Those bikes were not for faint hearted...
They both were so much better than the rest, I don't know how you can choose.
What is with all these commenters who feel they know Rossi, Lorenzo, Marquez etc. enough to love or hate them from a few statements over the years at press conferences, or gossip from moto journalists? All of these riders have ridden heroically and also pulled some dirty moves on the track.
Marc's laugh is million dollar..!! :D Enjoy at 1:09
omkar savdekar fuck you
Considering that most of these people didn’t see Mike Hailwood race a bike it’s a very difficult call.
I did see both Hailwood and Ago ride plus all the others commenting on stage..To me Hailwood will always be the best rider ever.
Seen him on the IOM. And most other tracks around the world. I’m not saying Ago wasn’t brilliant because he was but Mike was in my mind the King..
Beautiful to see how Lin's eyes light up!
I have some great memories of the 1978 TT when the Great 'Mike the Bike' made his winning comeback at 39 years of age - the man to me was the greatest - his ability to Win was in my opinion unsurpassed at the time - he could ride anything, 2 stroke, 4 stroke, tiddler, ripsnorting works Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha or MV and....win...I really don't think Ago had Mikes raw ability, or the astonishing ability to come home first no matter what - Hailwood just had that extra something that very, very few have, you will notice that Hailwood very rarely crashed - he had the ability to ride right on the limit and hold it just there - to me Valentino Rossi is more in the Hailwood mould and of similar ability - Ago, Brilliant, Wonderful and Glamorous - but not a Hailwood, not at the very, very top level....
Very nice of Lorenzo. What a great sportsman.
100% spot on, and its because of words like those about his fellow protagonists that Jorge himself will be remembered for being not only a champion rider but a great sportsman off the track. Just like no-one speaks highly of Wayne Gardiner, yet Mick Doohan is a God here in Australia due to his humility...
Bit of an unfair question tbh. Even Rossi probably only saw Hailwood v Ago on DVD. It's even more unfair to ask Marc who grew up watching Rossi and maybe Rainey, Doohan, Schwantz etc at a push what he thinks about an age of racing he wasn't even around for!
It is Italy's turn, nnow go to England and ask the same question.
Saulo Silva 2 spanish voted for Agostini.. and Lorenzo choose Agostini and Rossi ahaha who is haliwood
@@mirabelliluca4705 They voted for Agostini because they know him in person, and except Lin Jarvis no one saw them racing. Hailwood didn't win more because he retired being 27, and Ago won many of his champioships with Hailwood out of combat...
LOLOL Lorenzo is awesome hahaha loved that little speech
15 titles!!! 122 GP wins!!! 10 TT titles!!! - AGOSTINI!!! No doubt!
Somewhere in an alternative universe, Earth history records that Honda continued to field a racing team after 1967, and that Mike Hailwood, having never made the switch to car racing, retired in his mid to late 30s having racked up a record number of world title wins.
In our universe, he was 'lost' to the sport just as he approached his prime (he was only 27 years old).
Although in return we did get that wonderful, fairytale comeback of 1978. On balance though, I would have preferred to see him scrapping with Ago, Read, Saarinen and Sheene into the 1970s. What might have been......
They are both the greatest !
when lorenzo started in motogp, I tought he was quite arrogant....but in these last years(since Valentino in Ducati) I admit he's showing himself in a really honest and normal way.At least, he is a very (very) strong rider.
i'm italian but i say hailwood and one thing explain all, hailwood wins 12 T.T. on 13 so he's the best forever!!!
You're not Italian you're a fake. Agostini won 15 world championships, only 9 Hailwood. If we want to give importance to the TT race Agostini has won 10. What counts are the results.
John Surtees???
The Coop gamers is an italian name😂😂😂
funny! Ago says Hailwood is the best!
pieterklaaskrugmann
When asked who was the best yes Mike was the best he was also asked who he thought was the best current racer a few years ago and his answer was well Vale is like me everything has to be spot on Casey stoner is like Mike can ride around most faults to me that says something, Pisssssssst Please don't tell the yellow pantie brigade I told you that.
Agnostini hates rossi, it's nothing new
When they were team mates at MV Agusta Agostini was the number two he never could and never did beat Mike Hailwood.
Wow the veteran beat the rookie that has NEVER happened before or since.
Even Agostini said Mike was the greatest of all time. But these youngsters dont know about that. I know its impossible to compare but racing in the 60ties-70 ties is a whole other thing then racing in this time with the computers controlling so much stuff.
None of them saw or knew Hailwood if you had seen them ride together you would know it was MIKE HAILWOOD and if you want greatest of all time Hailwood again
Respect for Jorge. 🇮🇹
living legend!
Spot on pal. It is easy to see how the PR machine has been chipping away at Jlo over the years...He never really got over the incredible humiliation Rossi put on him at Catalunya 2009. Possibly never will. he needs to feel that it came from the GOAT.
lorenzo is a honest man and its make him real man. he can say what he think and feel.
Sorry Gents But it has to be Mike.. Rode everything from 125's to a 900, roads, IoM, Track & often on uncompetative kit (sometimes on purpose) Set world records ~ won Euro F5000 title, good in F1. Awarded the GM,, and had a fair few Cracking Lassies..
1:07 we all liked that 😊
They all said Rossi, because they know him. Hailwood won in all classes and hammered the TT, the greatest road race in the world.
Vale is the best of all the history but Mike Dohan was amazing. But yes, finally I think that Valentino is the best, he done all for this sport.
It would be easy to make a case for Hailwood. GP racing was in his blood, his DNA--he would always race successfully. Ago always had the advantage in bikes--especially the MV years--he was always way out front, he was in a class by himself. I call it a fortunate unfair advantage.
When vale and marc still got along each other
For several years MV Agusta was the only works-team in RR so Agostini had no competition at all. Mike #1.
respect to Lorenzo - I dont like him, but it takes courage to make such a statement about a team mate...
Lorenzo you're the man!
John Surtess : Only Man , on earth , !!!
Formula 1 : World Champion .
MotoGP : World Champion.
There is Noone Else !!!
Hailwood was the greatest of all time,He won at the isle of Man many times plus won there after he retired and made comeback and still won,Has any of the young guns on this video won at the isle of Man?I rest my case.
Wow. Lorenzo really does have a lot of class.
I kind of agree with that
RESPECT TO LORENZO FROM ITALY 🇮🇹
I’m a little bit surprised by their lack of being informed. Apart from Vale and the older guys they seem a bit awkward with the question. I’m not sure a modern footballer or rugby player would be equally inept at discussing their sports former Kings. However as we know from F1 not all racers are actually fans of cars/motorcycles. So I guess this is more of a reality check than anything. King’s dont always look beyond their castle.
Hailwood died before Marc was even born lol
SimpleVillain None of these guys know what their on about
Hailwood was taken away from by some careless twat in a lorry......still he's up there as one of the best and he was a true gentleman
That's a question, nobody can know´. It was actually not about the skill, it was about the sympathy and the fact that they were italian or met him.
But Jorge was right. In a few years the question will be these two or Rossi. He made this sport the way it is.
Jorge said that vale is the GOAT... Jorge is a nice man
How the Times have changed.....;D
My absolutly respect for Jorge Lorenzo !!!
AWKWARD !
Geoff Duke vs Hailwood now there's a question
Oh yes. So many top, top riders to think about. To name some, Bill Ivy, Jarno Saarinen, John McIntyre, John Surtees, Casey Stoner, and Derek Minter who Mike Hailwood said was his toughest competitor, after a lot of thought!
Masih ada yg nonton gk 2020 ??
Ago was still able to win races against riders like Kenny Roberts when he was close to retirement.. but Hailwood still is alot of ppl's Fav
For the all of the riders in motogp, your english language skill is :
Advanced Superior
Superior Quality
Top Major
What a load of bollox - Hailwood was miles ahead of Ago - even he knew that....
imgur.com/a/RFU3lnA Oh, was he really?
The question wasn't simply who won more... sure, that was Ago.. The question was "who is the greatest". Ago won loads more because for a large chunk of his career he was racing against single cylinder bikes on MV Agusta because the likes of Gilera and Moto Guzzi had pulled out of GP's and Honda had yet to enter. He jumped ship to Yamaha at exactly the right time and continued winning. However, Mike Hailwood won a higher proportion of races and was more dominant when he was racing bikes. He also had the amazing 1978 comeback after a huge layoff when he won the TT on a not much fancied Ducati. For me, Hailwood is easily the greatest.
@@peterg2yt Hate to break it to you sunshine but in every sport when the question who’s the greatest come up EVERYONE looks at statistics and Agos are better period. Nobody handed it Ago he had to go make it happen. The records that mostly likely to never be touched are owned by Ago the only one he’s matched on is win% in a season and he’s tied at 100% with John Surtess another legend.
@@zacharyradford5552 "Sunshine "... Is that supposed to be insulting? I repeat… the question being answered wasn’t “Who won more?” … that’s a very easy question to answer… it was “Who is the greatest?”.
2013, when rossi and marquez like brothers
Cant John Surtees be considered in this question, too? I think he won a few championships with MV...
Hailwood and Sheene EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK
I agree 100%.
Personally, my favorite is Mick Doohan. But Rossi is very close.
Was a silly question to ask really, non of them had any real knowledge of Mike Hailwood, he had died before most of them were even born.
Funny that Jorge, MM, and Vale looks got along together here. But the fans are keep hating each other
nice one jorge
Different eras. Giacomo used to rip the valve stems off when disc brakes were invented.
