  • The coldest day of the winter season far doesn't stop us from getting outdoors and cutting firewood along with preparing our future garden site. After the cold snap retreats we build sides for our dump trailer and cook up Snowshoe Hare pot pie.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

On the coldest day in the duck blind one of my friends who sits on the vestry at church told me it was cold enough to freeze the balls off a pool table. That’s the coldest I can remember it being out in the bay. We came home and drank hot chocolate, we didn’t stay out and cut trees. 😂

When we lived in the Northwest Territories our door hinges would freeze on the inside and the clothes closets would have ice on the back wall. Our oldest son 4 at the time got his tongue stuck on the door hinge when he tried to bite the ice off!! He screamed bloody murder. Eric you stayed pretty calm. We heated with wood but had an oil furnace for back up. On the coldest days it only burned like a little candle. Banking snow up on the house foundation helped because snow never goes below freezing. We only used the oil if we were gone for day. I loved splitting frozen firewood because they would just pop and split so easily. Our coldest day was -72. We stayed inside. It was so cold the smoke from the houses went down to the ground.

Snow not being able to be colder than freezing is a common misconception. While water cannot be above it's boiling temperature since the steam carries away the excess heat energy, the same isn't true for ice/snow. There isn't a mechanism that is providing heat to keep the ice/snow from being below freezing. That is why ice/snow has such different characteristics when it is very cold. All that said, snow is good insulator.

My first winter I came up to the eastern Interior, in 1981, I saw -80° below zero. Cold snaps lasted sometimes for over a month. It warmed up to 0°F and it felt like t-shirt weather. Winter's these days are much easier, thankfully!

That cold is amazing and scary. A couple things when it is that cold. If you have any wind, get some Ski Goggles. Any exposed skin/eyes can freeze in moments when you start approaching ~-70 F wind-chill. For your windows, put some 6 mill clear plastic on the outside and hold it down with furring strips around the edges. Turns plain single pane windows into expensive double pane for pennies. For the front door, a bit of a project, but screen in that porch and put up the plastic over the screens in the winter. That will create a air lock and stop that massive heat loss when the door is open. It also gives you a fly free zone during the fly months. ... Cheers! Keep up the videos!

I'm so glad to see that you have a dump trailer now. It will make it so much easier and less labor intensive in making your new garden. I can remember you guys shoveling dirt into a trailer back at your old place and that had to be tedious. I picked up when Ariel said about you aren't really up to shoveling every bit of dirt anymore; you guys are still kids in my estimation (my wife and I are both 73 1/2) but you are realizing as you get older it pays to work smarter and not harder. When you poured that hare stew into the pie crust, I was like, "I want some of that". Take care up there and stay warm. Spring is just around the corner. Love your videos.

Erik Ariel, Old Russian Proverb "Don't kiss any frozen wood" When I was a teenager I had my own room (in new jersey). In the winter I had the heat ducts closed and always had the windows open. I slept in my undies with a sheet (never a blanket) and was fine until it hit 32F At which point I'd close the two windows but no other adjustments. Often I'd awaken to snow on the inside window sill heheh
But 40 and 50 Below...it's totally outside my experience and after 37 years in Oaxaca NEVER below freezing and Rarely above 80F (high desert) so I now complain below 45F....
The Hare Pie looked fabulous. Milk-Cream-SourCream-Yoghurt all contain varying degrees of acid so are natural meat tenderizers.
I'm looking forward to the gardening. Here we havested ONE vanilla bean (Which is quite delicious) and eggplant season is upon us.

The dump trailer will be a great asset. Heavy loads, when dumping, will wear the battery quickly, keep a battery jump pack available, even with the truck charger, two or three heavy loads (gravel, loam) will drain power quickly. I keep a trickle charger on it always, but a very handy piece of equipment. A little larger one allows for moving your tractor, but that may not be an issue for you.

ERIC, use some caution when running your 2-stroke engines at those extreme temps below -30 as they are not properly jetted after that. The chainsaws can be adjusted (tuned) rather easily by turning the fuel screws to ADD more fuel but your sleds would/should be re-Jetted if you were to run them hard at those temperatures. The colder the temp, the MORE fuel they need. Commonly called jetting them “fatter”. The hotter the temp the lower the jets you would need or “leaning” them out. Every 2-stroke has a range where you can get by without adjustments but once you get that cold it’s almost necessary to assure you don’t cause piston damage. You might have noticed (I did) that your chainsaws were running really crisp on that cold day which meant they were running lean. If you don’t adjust them, when you go to use them in the summer they will feel boggy and low on power because at that point they will be jetted too rich (or fat) for warm weather. Hope that made sense! You two are warriors for working in that cold! It was 0 degrees F here in northern MN with wind so it felt kinda chilly!😉😁👍🏻

It's nice sometimes to not have to do things the hardest way. We get into the -30s in Wyoming, I do not think my brain would even turn on at -58. Good video! At those temps I am surprised things started and was impressed with how the sleds did not break with the logs being thrown in. Surprised the camera's worked. Chuckled at Eric getting lip stuck...lol. For your propane tanks, having a plug in heat tape will ensure it stays gaseous so that the stove and such will work. Those are the days that you do only what is necessary and sit around the fire the rest of time. Amazing how moving up 20 degrees can make a difference.
