Hey Sir, thanks so much for posting this video. I did the one handed snatch with 15 pounds today, I could only accomplish 2 sets of 10. Fabulous work out... Thanks.
I like how he says he doesn't want to get any bigger than he already is... I am not sure it would even be possible for him to get much bigger than he already is.
punches are not only generated from your hip but from your shoulders and upper back, and your triceps help for pulling and pushing and also for punching
the one hand snatch though is specific for his fight training. if he's got to throw a guy off who may be trying to take him down or something, he's got to use that one arm and the explosiveness in his legs to throw his opponent off. the guys a specimen.
@GSPRockNRoll Nah, grimy little pits like that are PERFECT for serious training! No distractions, no chrome, no emasculating music -- just iron, sinew, and sweat. Hell yeah.
Depending on your goals, you can do either low or high reps for fighting. First off, the high reps in a circuit are used for conditioning. The power you gain from high reps is significantly lower, than the power you gain from low reps. If you want power and core strength, you should do low reps. But to me, a good MMA workout is, when you devote a special training day for strength/power/technique/sparing and a special day for conditioning/speed/technique/sparing. Sparing and technique are a must
thats right, he isnt lifting max weight with a bar...i doubt anyone can lift their maximum with one dumbell...in my gym the dumbells go up to 50 kg and thats it...i like the idea of the lunge style deadlift
the exerises he is doing are explosive, so i think they don´t differ very much from throwing things. But maybe you are right. Training with weigt has however the atvantage that you can regulate it very well by increasing the weiht or repetitions.
i think the sorta 6 reps( theres no 1-6 rep set that i know of, just 6 rep set is the lowest) is depended on how its done, because alot of power lifters do there 6 rep sets to get huge. oh well jeffs doing a good job and making great money doing what he loves, so keep up the good work
not exactly:p mostly u see powerlifters focusing on 1-3reps, fighters is usually around 5-6 and bodybuilders is more like 9-14+. it all depends on how u body react to the weight lifting. But in the end u gain mass by damaging ure muscles fibers as much as possible, which is usually done best by a pretty higher numbers of reps.
FUCK POWER. I am 5'11", 207lbs so I'm not a small guy at all but I will tell you that its not about power. I box with guys 175lbs and they punch the same as 235lb monsters because of FORM. Remember, power is a great tool but not without FORM!
you cannot question his dedication or intensity,, although i was always taught,, low rep +high weight = more muscle gain,, low weight and high reps = strength gains,, and hes doing the opposite,, just wondering how its working out for him,, jeff your a monster,, good luck with ur future career =)
i'm no expert but i think the 1 arm dead lift would be better if done in a lunging style, so it works one leg at a time since he isnt lifting max weight with a bar.
With a bar is harder because you ahve to keep it balanced. That said, nothing is lost or gained by doing the one hand snatch with a dumbell, its slightly easier, thats all.
No its not a problem but it goes against what most others say, the squad is held in high regard. I am not saying he is wrong, he is jeff monson and who am i? guy is a beast
power..is also dependent upon speed - so these little guys punching harder and faster than the big guys, well i have tried explaining to some big guys, they just dont understand that a 400lb bench doesnt necc translate into a great big punch!
think he should work more on explosiveness and less on lifting weights. not saying that hes training wrong, id just adjust his training routine. he should pick up a training with say urijah faber or someone else how is kinda a shorter guy in there class and takes advantage of out powering and being more explosive than the other fighters in the class. also ive been watching some of monsons fights and it doesnt seem like he uses knees or elbow very often, his main goal is to get in close...
its for body mass however they are not the roids you are thinking of. It is a very low grade of hgh, however my first comment was how to beat a pee test for roids. even tho its a low grade hgh they still will test positive for steroids.
lifting weights for the most part is still gonna work slow twitch muscle fiber. i see where ur coming from sorta, but i think he would benifit more from throwing heavy bags and medicine balls then from doing sets of six incline bench or whatever. like i said b4... hes not wrong id just add or change somethings in the daily routine. and
You should read about muscletraining. He is actually training explosivness with his number of repitions and speed. 1-6 reps = explosiv, much strength not ver much mass. 6-20 reps = mass, strenth, less explosiv 20-xx reps = musclendurance, less mass
I dont think that would happen, but if thats what he thinks then that explains it. As for snatchs being full body exercises i kinda dout that. It doesnt really hurt any one muscle, its just plain tireing. Still, its silly I'm giving him advice, so I'll be quiet.
From a "critical bench" a while back: "CRITICAL BENCH: If you could fight at Wrestle Mania and challenge 3 people, in a full contact fight who would you choose and why? Jeff Monson: McCain, Obama, and Hillary Clinton because hopefully the people would realize we can do just fine without anyone in charge of us. " I love that answer. Rock on Jeff!
Says to do one arm deadlifts because he can’t do conventional due to a bad back and that conventional has him bend over yet demonstrates one arm deadlifts bent over...
To have knockout punching power, it's not any one thing, but a combination. Speed, technique, core strength, leg strength, etc. I always had a great knockout punch, but once I started doing power training and, believe it or not, yoga, my knockout ability went through the roof. Monson, btw, is a super nice guy. Extremely humble (off camera), very intelligent, and just an all around good dude. I wish he had beaten Silvia, too. Talk about douchebags...
My parents always tell me that MMA fighters are just a bunch of burley, bald, tattooed men. Its hard to deny when watching a video on Jeff Monson, only thing is this guy seems like a really nice guy who knows what hes talking about. Not a moron like my mum things hahaha
Deadlift is a good leg/back exercise whit one arm it will lower the weight so you woon't get that much more stronger on the muscle groups where deadlift is ment to work. If you got a hole in your back you do it right : ). You cen use a belt for your back to, but that will take all the weight of the lower back.
@yardape99 he means to be explosive while hes throwing his opponant around,, not in a race of reflexes,, he means he wants to build his explosive strength,, and id challange you to lift those dumbells and pop up onto your toes like that,, did you listen to him,, hes trying to punch his feet threu the floor,,not l;ift with his arms,, its almost trying to pull off mind over matter,, =)
lol REALY????? Kimbo is great on the street with no names. I don't care if he does train with Bas.... He needs more time. Jeff would have his way with him. Now you have a great day!
yeah i mean monson is one of the most prestigious grapplers ive ever seen, i mean the guy is a ADCC submission wrestling champion, and whats kimbo have thats soo special???? fuckin backyard fights with fat bums?? shit monson would put kimbo out of his missury,
my trainer used to know him and said he was real smart and one of the calmest people around
Thanks Snowman, always good to have a few more tools in the box.

Thanks Jeff, I am trying to get back in shape and your videos are a huge help.
Keep it up man. GO ATT!
Where can we find the rest of the dvd?
good post, keeping the people informed

is Jeff back to fighting?
I hope so. LOVE this guy...as an anarchist and as a fighter.

i was trying at the gym , but i wasnt trying nearly that much , just 50 lbs. i did think about that happening though
thats right, he isnt lifting max weight with a bar...i doubt anyone can lift their maximum with one dumbell...in my gym the dumbells go up to 50 kg and thats it...i like the idea of the lunge style deadlift
mosson is a beast
anyone know how much the guy was lifting each time?
I'm wondering if those 50 lbs I'm used to will be enough for this exercise...
the exerises he is doing are explosive, so i think they don´t differ very much from throwing things.
But maybe you are right. Training with weigt has however the atvantage that you can regulate it very well by increasing the weiht or repetitions.
mma is the new bodybuilding
that one arm snatch lifts are the shit
Always been a fan of 1arm snatch for athletes.
i need some real good leg workouts im straight on upper body never worked out my legs before though might try the first one.
i think the sorta 6 reps( theres no 1-6 rep set that i know of, just 6 rep set is the lowest) is depended on how its done, because alot of power lifters do there 6 rep sets to get huge. oh well jeffs doing a good job and making great money doing what he loves, so keep up the good work
ONe hand snatch is great, but I actually like it with a bar because its slightly harder that way.
check his record on wikipedia.
I never seen him fight is he any good ?
not exactly:p mostly u see powerlifters focusing on 1-3reps, fighters is usually around 5-6 and bodybuilders is more like 9-14+. it all depends on how u body react to the weight lifting. @churborx7 thats in kgs lol. Those dumbbells are about 85lbs each
FUCK POWER. I am 5'11", 207lbs so I'm not a small guy at all but I will tell you that its not about power. I box with guys 175lbs and they punch the same as 235lb monsters because of FORM. Remember, power is a great tool but not without FORM!
Monson's right arm doesn't fully straighten.
i tried the very first one and got a split open head
you cannot question his dedication or intensity,, although i was always taught,, low rep +high weight = more muscle gain,, low weight and high reps = strength gains,, and hes doing the opposite,, just wondering how its working out for him,, jeff your a monster,, good luck with ur future career =)
Low weight n high reps for strength?? Wtf taught u that?
how old is this dude?
i'm no expert but i think the 1 arm dead lift would be better if done in a lunging style, so it works one leg at a time since he isnt lifting max weight with a bar.
Jeff Monson should star as fenix if they ever really make a Gears of War live action movie.
It`s simple as a brick but still efficient, moreover it`s efficient because of simplicity. lI like Jeff)))
With a bar is harder because you ahve to keep it balanced.
That said, nothing is lost or gained by doing the one hand snatch with a dumbell, its slightly easier, thats all.
what's that dot in his forehead?
tried that shit and I almost snapped my fucking elbow!!!
yeah jeff is a rare fighter/grappler very rare... not just some pure bjj guy,
hes supose ta b a really sound person really normal an nice loik....plus es a beast!!
No its not a problem but it goes against what most others say, the squad is held in high regard. I am not saying he is wrong, he is jeff monson and who am i? guy is a beast
well look at the results. they should speak for themselves, he also has a professional coach and probably a nutritionist too.
power..is also dependent upon speed - so these little guys punching harder and faster than the big guys, well i have tried explaining to some big guys, they just dont understand that a 400lb bench doesnt necc translate into a great big punch!
is that really a bullet hole?
Homeboy is all muscle too. Its too bad he didn't win the Heavyweight Title from Sylvia. But he's still an awesome fighter.
my point exactly. and neither does a big squat or clean guarantee a good hard punch.
his neck is actually wider than his head. that's pretty rare
think he should work more on explosiveness and less on lifting weights. not saying that hes training wrong, id just adjust his training routine. he should pick up a training with say urijah faber or someone else how is kinda a shorter guy in there class and takes advantage of out powering and being more explosive than the other fighters in the class. also ive been watching some of monsons fights and it doesnt seem like he uses knees or elbow very often, his main goal is to get in close...

awesome underground gym

Jeffs fighting in South Florida(Pompano Beach) on October 23 2010!!
5 foot 8 inches
its explosive!
God being tough is way cooler than being strong just for the sake of being strong. I know, I know, I know you have to be strong to do MMA.
5'9" (176cm)
240lbs (109kg)
I dont think that would happen, but if thats what he thinks then that explains it.

I'm in
Holy shit that's mine too!
he don't wanna look sluggish?
@waitarajason id like to see you say it to his face
From a "critical bench" a while back:

I'd think he would want to be faster. I don't see anything resembling explosive with those movements.
if u want to work your legs and not put allot of weight on your back and squat? did he really just say that?
Привет всем из 2021 ))
Then using a bar is good, its much harder.
@FifteenIsTheNumber looks like staph

everyone should see this...2 men settle there arguements but agreeing that maybe we are both a little right...kinda lol. good stuff
Surprised he doesn't smash the light when he does the one armed snatch lol
My parents always tell me that MMA fighters are just a bunch of burley, bald, tattooed men. Its hard to deny when watching a video on Jeff Monson, only thing is this guy seems like a really nice guy who knows what hes talking about. Not a moron like my mum things hahaha
reason why u as a fighter tend to have more reps than a powerlifter is endurence ofc.
So?
start off with low weights lmao , Monsons a beast .
He did only 4 reps with the right hand on the first exercise.
maybe he got tired. he was breathing pretty hard
Paul Ioniță Its for strength not bodybuilding max 5 reps
if you stop at 0:12 he looks like homer simpson.

and thats not his neck.. you mean his traps, yeah he does look like he has some strong ass traps
its 37.5 lbs
@FifteenIsTheNumber dont wana be sluggish
see the bullet wound in his head. such a gnar dog
5 bucks someone tries to do this at home and crack their skull when the weight lowers down on the one arm snatch
Never occurred to me that Monson looks *EXACTLY* like a roided out, bald John C. Reilly until this vid.
if jeff monson was a superhero, he'd be doomsday.
god now I feel like a sucker with my 50 : (
wrong man heavy weight low reps = mass(hypertrophy)
Its certaintly an orginal name.
he should expulse the air when he pulls
i will remember that lol
yeah i mean monson is one of the most prestigious grapplers ive ever seen, i mean the guy is a ADCC submission wrestling champion, and whats kimbo have thats soo special???? fuckin backyard fights with fat bums?? shit monson would put kimbo out of his missury,
@siaosiaochin ahah you wish!
why dont he just do some fucking shoulder presses though? hes gunna break his fucking back soon
haha yes i am(: but if you take them in moderation its not as bad for you as people think.
is this bullet in his head? :D
W/e he used before doesn't matter much now. every ufc fighter is taking frequently "pee tests" so zipit.
