It really a hit or miss though. Lots of people hated it because the NPC will more often than not get stuck on something or just do a suicide charge into a horde when you want them to follow you around it. Their main attraction is their story/personality and you get the feeling of growing a base when you come check on them later and see the survivor numbers increasing.
@@Kono_Dio-Dadead rising 2 was the 3rd best overall imo though. It tried to lean a different direction but didn’t do it far enough like dead rising 3 did
The thing I love about Dead Rising 1 was how dark it was. Yeah you could make it incredibly goofy, but if you played it straight it was a VERY somber and eerie game that didn't shy away from how devastating an event like this would be. You literally meet a woman in hysterics because she watched zombies eat her baby. By comparison I feel like the rest of the series didn't quite get it. The goofy stuff infiltrated the main storyline. The villains got more comical and Frank West no longer felt like an average guy in a hard situation, instead being either a 80's action hero badass or (in the case of Dead Rising 4) a complete moron.
Idk i feel like eventually with less law enforcement the people are the real zombies and the real enemies were the friends we met along the way 😂 In all seriousness all cept DR4 were great imo. They each improved upon and they had various characters. Frank nonstop would get boring after awhile.
None of the sequels really captured what makes this game special. The mall felt lived in, and each store helped enhance the immersion. I also liked the scalability of this game's environment.
The second game definitely captured m o s t of what made the first one special. At least when it comes to the joys of killing zombies. After that, the franchise fell apart. But there was something that started being dropped in the second game that really destroyed the magic of the original: the game was too easy. You pretty much can't do everything you want in the first game, not until you restart the game a few times. Lots of people never finished the game because of it. But those people did pay for the game. And I'm sure they enjoyed their time with it. The same can't be said for the people that stopped playing Dead Rising 3 and 4.
This was my first real experience with Zombies and very light levels of horror when I was a kid. The music and humor of this game have influenmced me a lot over the years, for all its jank and frustrating sections, Deadrising is still a masterpeice of a game.
Frank is one of my favorite video game characters specifically because he's just some dude, as Capcom intended. He's also got that RE4 Leon charm of using moves he definitely only ever saw on TV to kill zombies. Those games were the best of the franchise from when I played them, even though I have only seen gameplay of three and four. This was the first game I got all the achievements for on Xbox 360 back in 2007.The survivors were very frustrating, but everything else about the game just worked to me. It was like an attempt to make a new zombie horror classic like Resident Evil for the early HD generation. I love this game and to this day it's my favorite Capcom game.
Dead Rising is one of Capcom’s funniest franchises ever made. This what I think about, if they turn Resident Evil into a horror comedy with RPG elements. Of course it takes place in a mall, which is them taking an homage to Dawn of the Dead.
I hope that one day Dead Rising gets a remake like what the Resident Evil games have been getting. Its a long shot, but seeing Frank West and the Willamete in the RE:Engine would be amazing.
My first game on the Xbox 360, without a memory card for saving, I used to just play around the mall every time and try to discover all the weapons and places, what a fantastic game full of things to discover for a 13yo mega fan of the movies of Romero.
I really miss this series and Frank West. I didn't like 2 as much but I still had a lot fun with it. It went downhill HARD after Off The Record, sadly.

Ill always love Dead rising. Its a game whose soundtrack can instantly teleport me back to 2006 and the start of the first real wave of next gen games on the 360. The sequel is actually pretty good, however about 2/3rd of the way in it introduces a new enemy type that ruins the entire game, but aside from that, i remember really enjoying it. This game was always special to me. I bought it for my son and I to play during the most intense parts of my divorce from his mother, and it was just something my ten year old and I could do together which distracted from the painful struggle caused by his mother (they don't talk anymore.)

I really miss the dead rising franchise it started to stumble at 3 but was still really fun imo even 4 was fun but obviously the weakest of the franchise by a good amount. I just really like the whole concept of it and the way it was executed as well as the colorful fun presentation that didn't take itself too seriously. Loved the freedom of the game and how you could use anything as a weapon or wear anything it just feels like a real lived in place because you can interact with the game world so much. The story and the side stories were also really good. I also enjoyed the timer mechanic because it made things more frantic and encouraged second play throughs because it was hard to do it all in one playthrough. The DR games where just alot of fun.
Mr Punch you sound aprehensive about the sequels, but you shouldnt be about the 2nd at least. I actually had no idea 2 was from a different team because it feels so much like a natural progression from the first
The most unrealistic thing in this game is the fact that theres this massive megacity mall in the middle of nowhere that was not only able to make enough money to function but fully staff every store with a quarter of the population of a small city.
I think I lucked out against the convicts back when I played this game. If I recall right, they managed to flip the jeep which offed the gunner and the driver, leaving the bat wielding passenger easy pickings.
Absolute gem of a game and one of those very rare “everyone must play it” titles in my opinion. While not everyone will agree, I also think it's sequels DR2, Case West, and especially 3 are all good follow-ups and would recommend fans of the first to play them, here's hoping you cover them as well! I'd also like to hear your review of the much-hated remake as well as comments in regard to the unfortunately cancelled DR4 which was looking to be something special.
This game felt like the first next gen game when it came out. I remember someone telling me that they could have up to 600 zombies on screen at once. Never knew if it was true but it was fun to get caught up in potential myths like that
I like Japanese hardware ( cars , guitars etc ) but rarely their artistic content (manga, movies, music), but Dead Rising is a rare exception to this rule. As you said yourself, it's fun from start to finish and there's a typical atmosphere in several Japanese games that's not quite normal but that I adore in this specific case. I bought it on the PlayStation store recently just to have it on my PlayStation 5 and enjoy it all over again. If I remember correctly, I had it back then on the Xbox. It's one of those games that literally marked my adolescence.
I cannot abide Dead Rising. It's like a greatest hits of game design shit I hate. Escort quests with dumb AI, time limits, specific save points, respawning enemies, getting stunlocked when hit, bullet sponges, breakable weapons, unskippable radio conversations, and so on.
Can't wait for Dead Rising 2 tho. Even if not the best compared to the first, it does a massive overhaul for the content, pathfinding for the survivor AI and the amount of replay ability for some of the stuff you have to do to finished the game at a 100%.
I always thought that the ai's path finding (except for the goddamn stupid jump on the vent) are part of the immersive element of the game... people are panicking, ofcourse they will do stupid decisions, so it make sense when they are sometime stuck on something or just stop and crying in the middle of run aways.... remember, only frank cover wars here, the rest are just civilians, and civilian ARE idiots in this kind of scenario so its totally make sense.. at least for me.. which is another thing i love about DR1.. how its so goofy and realistic in the same time.
Even when you reached level 50, you an still always find new things: Did you know you can photograph the survivour death cutscenes for consulation PP, and use disembowl on spec ops (And It wrecks them.) alongside other wrestling moves?. As for sequels, only bother with DR2, and/or Off the Record. Anything after that Is dissapointment. (DR4's overtime Is DLC, but I do appreciate the Bass/Forte costume you can get.)
The only thing that really never worked for me was the time limit. But I admit to feeling that all of the mechanics ultimately work together to make a fun experience.
It’s for the better I want to say? Having a timer makes it more tense for rescuing survivors and getting to locations on time while avoiding zombies on the way. I’m not sure how they could’ve changed it. I don’t really have a lot of gripes with the game besides that kinda, and not being able to move and shoot. The game was built around it somewhat so it’s not the worst, but when you see the gunplay in 2 the difference is night and day.
The *_Devil May Cry_* series didn't suffer from being “farmed out west”. The Ninja Theory-developed *_DmC_* is only a couple of percentage points behind *_DMC5_* , the highest-rated in the series. *_Silent Hill_* would have been a better example.
I could never get into this game, I hate time límits. However, this can be considered the first truly "next gen" game back in 2006, there was no way the previous gen could have all those zombies on screen at once (and this includes the Wii port).
I literally just started playing it. I’ve died like three times so far tho. So clearly I’m doing something wrong. I’ve been rewatching your retrospectives since they inspired me to get to work on my own. I’d be interested to see you cover off the record and the devil May cry games.
Always thought it was dumb that two grown men couldn’t hold back an old lady from opening the door, like bro I would’ve just locked the door behind her she can regret her decision after she’s being feasted upon, just plain stupid

Ooh a dead rising video from you. I like that.
RIP Capcom vancouver 🙏
This game felt like the first next gen game when it came out. I remember someone telling me that they could have up to 600 zombies on screen at once. Never knew if it was true but it was fun to get caught up in potential myths like that
It’s still really cool seeing how many zombies the 360 could put on screen.
We want remaster !!!!!
I remember this game blew me away as kid! Great video! It brought back many good memories 🥹

Dead Rising? More like, Drip Rising.
The store guy is my favorite
I cannot abide Dead Rising. It's like a greatest hits of game design shit I hate. Escort quests with dumb AI, time limits, specific save points, respawning enemies, getting stunlocked when hit, bullet sponges, breakable weapons, unskippable radio conversations, and so on.
I hear what you are saying, but I think you misjudge the guy
Gone guru really is the best song
I loved playing this on the XBox 360 Arcade I bought from Blockbuster but didn't really "get it" at the time.
you're so underrated man
Absolutely amazing video
*oOooOoh HE AIN'T MY BOY, BUT THE BROTHER IS HEAVY*
This game would benefit massively from a remake, WITH THE GAMEPLAY MADE BETTER, not worse. And no 2023 crap
Can't wait for Dead Rising 2 tho. Even if not the best compared to the first, it does a massive overhaul for the content, pathfinding for the survivor AI and the amount of replay ability for some of the stuff you have to do to finished the game at a 100%.
This game is a hell of a lot of fun.....if youre not a completionist. XD
I always thought that the ai's path finding (except for the goddamn stupid jump on the vent) are part of the immersive element of the game... people are panicking, ofcourse they will do stupid decisions, so it make sense when they are sometime stuck on something or just stop and crying in the middle of run aways.... remember, only frank cover wars here, the rest are just civilians, and civilian ARE idiots in this kind of scenario
so its totally make sense.. at least for me.. which is another thing i love about DR1.. how its so goofy and realistic in the same time.
Special Forces commander at the end sounds like Jecht from FFX
Just my two cents but Dead Rising 2 is still a great game in it's own right and you should definitely check it out if you find the time for it.
