Because there's no reasonable way that Madeline could have 'set her free' without causing that part of herself to be lost forever, which still would have hurt her.
The game has 2 major powerups, the feather, and the 2nd dash. And both of them are tied to really powerful moments in the story. The fact that these are what gives Madeline extra strength and abilities in the game also has a ton of emotional weight to it and I can't remember any other game doing that so well.

I found a way to do this, I had a friend with me. He finished the game with a controller while I have never played this game with (only keyboard), so for the feather parts he played and I did the rest lol

feather isn't really a powerup though, it's just an item like the bubble or dash crystal
