    Ulnar deviation is the reason most people don't play golf well. It's the action of pointing the shaft toward the ball in an effort to "make the clubhead hit the ball." This action is completely unnecessary. When we swing a baseball bat we swing it butt-end first and allow the meat of the bat to swing out and strike the ball - we don't manually point the bat toward the ball. The same is true in golf. If you imagine swinging the butt-end backward at an imaginary ball (The Holy Grail Method) the weight of the clubhead will cause the club to swing out and strike the ball. There is no need to assist the club in doing its job. You can't stop it if you tried, really. As a matter of fact maybe you should try to see that you don't need to help it. Try to swing the club upside down, butt-end first through the entire swing and see what happens. The club rockets out and around much faster than you could ever do manually. As a matter of fact your hands can't keep up which is why we get wear on the gloves.
    Golf should not be a struggle. Golf should not be hard. Golf is easy if you know the secret.
    Start playing golf well. Gain confidence and have more fun playing golf.
    Dustin Johnson, Cameron Champ, Rory McIlroy, Joaquín Niemann and Tommy Fleetwood all hit the ball with this method.

      @@jonathanbalanetsky7914 Well, that sounds scary but basically, yes. We're only delivering the bottom of the shaft toward the target line. Once we pass parallel or the holy grail position the club begins to rotate closed naturally. We actually do swing the shaft at the ball, or I should say we have learned to but there's a phenomena called shaft droop that causes the ball to be struck in the center of the clubface rather than the hosel. If you've ever watched someone try to hit a ball tossed to them like a baseball they almost always strike the ball with the shaft and the head breaks off. This is no accident. Although, their intent was to strike the ball out of the air with the clubface their instinct was to hit it with the shaft and they usually do.

      @@paulwoolnough3770 Interesting that you should mention it, but we actually do swing the heel of the club straight at the ball. When we do the weight of the toe causes the shaft to bow moving the heel out of the way and replacing it with the center of the face. It's called shaft droop. If the shaft didn't droop every shot would be.a shank. I'm in the process of making a video about it. It's why the shaft has to match your swing speed. Too stiff and you'll hit off the heel to soft and you'll hit off the toe. If you look really closely at any good player at impact an draw a straight line from the butt end of the club to the ball you'll see the line is on the shaft until about half way then the shaft curves downward and off that line, but the grip of the club is pointing straight at the ball.

      You're either manually closing the clubface too early in the downswing, or you're not swinging downward enough. Instead of fearing the ball going right, try to swing with the clubface open as if you want the ball to go right. It takes some convincing of yourself to swing downward and outward enough. Don't try to make it work, try to make it not work. Try to prove me wrong. That's how you actually get the feeling for it. Any help you try to give it will make it fail. It's so simple you won't believe it.

    Thank you so much for your videos. I've watched every one since you posted the holy grail and many of the ones prior as well. Truly awesome stuff, so I hope you'll continue--your voice and videos are refreshing (and I've watched a LOT of golf videos since I started playing in my 20s more than 20 years ago.
    I believe that the biggest challenge is in getting one's brain to "get" it. I believe I intellectually "understand" the golf swing. I comprehend (as laity) what I am trying to do with respect to angles, it's simply that the part of my brain that understands how to move doesn't trust it. And then all it takes is one bad slice to everything up in my head.
    That's why I find your videos to be wonderful. In particular, I would love it if you would go into more detail around the "automatic" closing of the club head. I have a suspicion that my brain sees a wide open (to me) clubface in the downswing at the parallel to ground position and subconsciously tenses up. Any thoughts on how to overcome/retrain that "feature"?
    I like this video a lot because it gives me something very concrete to focus on. I would love to hear more about the shaft droop for certain.

    • @HolyGrailOfGolf

      I've been saying this for years, YOU HAVE TO PROVE YOURSELF WRONG. Everyone is so scared to hit the ball right that they never bother to see what would happen if they actually tried it. If you try to swing with the clubface wide open, you can't do it. The physics of the club won't let it. What causes an open face is prematurely manually closing it, then with power still applied to the handle the clubface re-opens through impact and the ball goes right.
      So when you prove yourself wrong you do it over and over until you no longer believe that it won't work. Reprograming your brain.
      "This shouldn't work. This ball should go straight right."
      "Right down the target line. Long and straight."
      "That was a freak of nature. This one will go dead right."
      "Nope. Right down the target line. Long and straight"
      "This shouldn't work." ...
      50 balls later ...
      Oh yeah, all you gotta do is swing the club "that way" and the ball goes "that way." After you've done it enough, it makes perfect sense and you're reprogramed.

    • @HolyGrailOfGolf
      @HolyGrailOfGolf  4 роки тому

      Coming over the top is a product or effect of ulnar deviation or the desperate act of trying to make sure the clubface is square at impact. To you, because you've even brought up this question, it will feel like the clubface is wide open. Really, it's only going to be about 30º open, but it's a moot point in that by the time you get to the ball it will be square unless you've forced some sort of compensation that will interrupt this process. I'll say it again, you have to prove yourself wrong. Go try this and try to hit the ball with the clubface wide open as you imagine it would be and you'll find that with no active control it closes on it's own. It's designed to do that. It's why children who know nothing about golf or physics can hit a ball perfectly. If you're gripping the club properly all you should have to do is swing the club, the anatomical limits of your body and the engineering of the club does the rest.
      There is no need to come over the top once you truly understand how the club works.

    That Imo is a very Phil Michelson swing and relies on the club shaft straightening at the ball to allow the face to rotate, the danger is pulling too hard with the toe up can cause the shaft to flex in the opposite direction of impact laws meaning it has to somehow rebound to shaft droop at impact making it hard to control the closing of the face so with this method swinging and feeling centrifugal force is imperative. The Dustin Johnson etc method is bow the left wrist early so the face DOES look at the ball early so powering hard will cause the shaft to only ever correctly bend backwards and downwards(droop) throughout the downswing which is very stable yet requires great athleticism as it's a core driven hit through rather than a swing to like Phil's.

    • @HolyGrailOfGolf
      @HolyGrailOfGolf  4 роки тому

      I gotta disagree with you on that one. Take a look at this video, ua-cam.com/video/FiDIsE6sZrQ/v-deo.html
      Although, we think the shaft would be bending backward at impact it's actually the other way around. The clubhead is moving faster than our hands can keep up so the shaft at impact is actually bent forward ... this also allows the clubhead to stay in contact longer with the ball and impart more energy to it as the shaft recoils from impact with the mass of the golf ball.
      If the shaft were to be bent backward at impact that would mean our hands would be moving faster than the clubhead and still imparting force on the handle - which is exactly what most amateurs do causing them a massive loss of distance.
      Finally, there is no way to reach the ball without allowing the shaft out. What I've described here is how good golfers use the club. That's not to say some elite athletes like DJ have learned to do more advanced or unique moves that also work. I'd say 98% of the human population cannot perform a golf swing like DJ or John Rahm. You can chase that, as I did, for years or you can have fun. Personally, I'm liking the fun part a lot more.
      What I find interesting is that we watch most professional athletes on tv and never imagine we can do the same but for some reason, people think they should be as good as a pro.

    • @dazalenko4250
      @dazalenko4250 4 роки тому

      @@HolyGrailOfGolf I probably should have clarified i was talking about prior impact, yes the shaft is not still bending backwards at impact but would you agree that for it to be bending forwards at impact it must have been bending backwards in relation to the face just prior? Therefore it's important that prior forces on the shaft cause this backward bend rather than too much upward bend which is likewise impossible to maintain at impact and the rebounding of this unwanted flex ( due to droop law) can destabilize the club face. Its as simple as ensuring force is only applied to the shaft when the left arm is actively ( yet not forced) closing the face at about the 10:00 position rather than too early when the toe is facing up, DJ"s difference is he severely bows the wrist at the top (12:00) so he can pull as hard as he wants from there without bending the shaft upwards this creates extra backward bend which when released on impact creates power and control.

    • @HolyGrailOfGolf
      @HolyGrailOfGolf  4 роки тому

      @@dazalenko4250 That's a lot of info. Yes, in the video I made with Brandon Stone, we see the shaft bent backward when he first applies power. What I was showing in that video is that at the Holy Grail position is when the shaft is neutral and then begins to bend forward. Which means that's the point at which it begins to move faster than our hands can move. Shaft droop is an interesting phenomena that most people have no idea about and I'm not sure if they should.
      I can't agree with the "forces the club closed," statement. I think it's actually the club that's causing the wrist to rotate. I made a club with the head free spinning on the shaft to prove that the rotation of the shaft wasn't what was controlling the clubface. Sure, the shaft can and does control the clubface but better if the clubface is in control. If that makes sense.

      @@HolyGrailOfGolf fair enough but I did say 'not' forced closed. I'd like to suggest just for the fun of it as an experiment try hitting some balls with the feeling of downswing handle forces bending the shaft upwards (leading with the heel) then hit some shots with the feeling of downswing handle forces bending the shaft backwards in relation to a square face and see what you think , imo you will find the force on the second swing needs to be applied later in the downswing when you sense the face is square in the slot but the shaft should feel kind of stiffer and on rails near impact . But swinging from the top and leading with the heel is still a great swing style and requires soft wrist mechanics to allow the face to shut on release. A great way to swing if you are older or have good feel for a swing.
      Also I believe shaft droop is important information for golfers as shanks can inexplicably occur from a sound swing especially with stiff shafts that's just slightly tentative at impact, this slightest deceleration causes the shaft strength to 'win' against the droop (as droop needs momentum to be maintained) therefore snaps the shaft straight presenting the heel to the ball, droop also explains why swinging too aggressively for your shaft strength can cause unexplained deep divots or high right push drives as too much droop is just like hitting off a side hill lie, it presents the loft on an angle causing the apex to be to the right mimiking a push.

    Don't tour pros have the face pointing at the ball to target line at that 9 oclock position though? Including DJ. I'm confused. Don't they all bow the wrist at that point to have the face squaring early? I also thought that's what you meant by hitting the ball to the target line behind the ball. But you are saying hit it there with the hosel side of the shaft. Isn't that wide open? That would make it more than 90 to the ground. Why don't we see this in slow mo of pros on tour? I'm not saying you are wrong, I just find it confusing.

      You're right and what you're describing makes sense. I'm describing what it is we need to think we're doing, not what will actually happen. What you're describing will actually happen without you thinking about it. Hogan described a lot of things in his book that he didn't actually do but he thought he did or at least he felt like he did. I think he understood that feel is not real and we simply need to think we're doing something that forces us to do the proper things. If you're doing the HG swing properly you'd swear you're swinging backward away from the target but the ball flies toward the target. Basically, we're tricking ourselves into making the proper moves. If we actively try to make the proper moves we'll either over do it, or do it too late.

      I wanted to make this thing for a long time but I couldn't figure exactly how. Today, I just figured I'd go for it and see how it went and it went better than I thought. One problem was having was how to get the big end of the shaft through the hole and keep the small end from wobbling around but I found a stupid club I bought years ago called the "Purespin" which has a non-tapered shaft, so I jammed that in there and it worked great. Luckily this bat had a plastic concave cap at the end so the whole job was about 5 minutes. Maybe I'll make a video about how to make it.

    Actually many great golfer dorsiflex their trail hand as they are able to stay connected with their swing rotating their body back and forth as if in a barrel. With their dorsiflexion of their trail hand; they also produce a better shaft lean just prior to hitting their ball flush.

      Hosel rockets?! That's no fun. I imagine you started questioning how great you were playing and then unconsciously tried to over-control it to make sure it continued but instead got in the way. We as humans tend to do that. We just think, "this is too easy. It can't last," and we start to question it and we screw it all up.
      Any chance the hosel rockets were slow tempo abbreviated swings? There is a phenomena that I'm going to make a video about called shaft droop. The shaft acts very differently at full speed than it does at half speed. A full speed swing would hit the ball square in the middle of the club face whereas the exact same swing at half speed would result in a shank, because of shaft droop.

I was envisioning the heel of the club hitting the ball with the face perpendicular to the target line. Great strikes except those damn laterals were devastating. I'm hoping it's as simple as changing that vision to the heel being inside of the ball rather than literally trying to hit it with the heel, although that worked on the range. It may also be that I tried to add at the bottom and my old habit of early extending showed up. Got some work to do.

    Completely wrong. If you try to hit the ball with ulnar deviation you have to roll your wrists before impact to square the club face. That throws the club head outside the plane you have been tracing during the downswing. Hello early extension, shanks, pull hooks, etc…. Yes, you can hit with power, but at a loss of accuracy; and it kills your short game. Instead, create trail wrist extension (or lead wrist flexion) during the backswing (not at setup) and hold it through the downswing and impact. That will encourage leg drive, body rotation, and tilt resulting in even greater power and accuracy.
