I also like American Dad because it makes me laugh and the series is not overrated or overhyped like Family Guy and Rick and Morty. In fact, AD is incredibly underrated and I'm still wondering why?
I just realized that Roger protects the family in his own twisted way. When there is any activity outside the family he is not sure about, he takes over as the overseer to ensure that he controls the "sandbox" to make sure nothing REALLY bad happens to them. That doesn't mean he wont screw with them, humiliate them, or get them in trouble of some sort while they are doing their thing, but he ensures that it is either the kind of trouble one of his personas can get them out of, or something that he can pin on someone outside the family. It also gives him something to do, since he gets bored real easy, and gets him out of the house for a while.
He literally saves them from himself when his future self travels back in time 3 days to prevent himself from killing them... But future Roger actually comes back in time to crash the spaceship into the sun and present Roger ends up saving everyone in
Roger has to be one of the most versatile characters ever. You could put him in literally any situation no matter how absurd and it'd make sense simply because he's Roger.
This is why American Dad is better not only than Family Guy but a lot of adult animation. The character of Roger means there’s infinite possibilities for stories. The show feels a lot more free.
I know the terms underrated and underappreciated are wildly and constantly misused on the internet these days, but I do think American Dad can sometimes be described by those words. At least compared to Family Guy. It's a shame Family Guy still overshadows American Dad, and I think a lot of people still write it off as being derivative of Family Guy, when it really isn't at all aside from the art style.

Whenever I am in a bad mood or depressed, I will watch this video. It cheers me up 100 percent of the time. I love Roger and his personas. People always talk shit about Seth M, but I think that he and his writers for American Dad are funnier than they get credit for.
Seth doesn't do a lot of the writing for this show like he does family guy..he mainly writes for family guy. There's a whole thing about it if you Google it.
Roger's character could have failed, miserable, but they actually managed to make it work so well. The way the entire Smith family falls into each character, as if it isn't Roger at all, is amazing.

You can walk in a business and steal a bunch of stuff and walkout; even with video evidence, police wont take the case unless its a certain amount of $ value that was stolen. Then if you do go to jail for stuff; it's basically free living off of societies hard work. Taxes that could go towards roads, housing, etc. Not to mention the same people who ruin housing/property and drive up prices of products/living, tend to be the same ones who have criminal records and generally dont keep jobs or provide back to society. The country will only get better when the punishments for crime is so extreme that people wont commit crime, and those who do will be exiled from society.

In all honesty, roger is a really complicated character. New personalities every episode. He’s gotta be really difficult to write for.
