Stephen is The kind of guy that made a career out of keeping is face straight as well as being funny. He also is a major narscissist always has the need to be the funniest in the room and to make sure of that he does everything he can to assert that and no laugh is the worse for a comedian. Jimmy carried the conversation really well. He described the English learning experience really well. That was how I felt when I came from HK at 12.
HK has been a british colony till 1997. Isn't english a common language in HK?
@kabouterwesley83 Many people could speak English fluently in HK, but still, there are many who couldn't speak or understand English at all, even though English was being taught in schools.

Such a bad interview from Colbert's side. He wasn't really trying to engage Jimmy and its especially bad because it's his first interview so why try to make him uncomfortable.
I am thinking maybe he was uncomfortable too because he doesn't really "get" Jimmy's humor?
I also immigrated from Hong Kong when I was 11, and those were the exact same impressions I remember from my initial experience in school. One of the other boys asked me, "How are the chicks in Hong Kong?" and I literally thought he was asking about little chickens.

Jimmy has such great stance and confidence. Even without a chuckle from the host, he maintains absolute coolness, doesn't pull back from his ideals. Probably one of the reasons why he overcame adversity and learned English like a beast.
That Hong Kong joke was so good, it was almost painful to watch not the host or the audience react to it.

You just said you think you know what the joke was referring to, the audience probably literally had no idea what he was talking to. People are also scared to laugh cause they don’t want to offend anyone

@@9000inc He said "you work on HBO and I work on CBS" after Jimmy cursed and then asked if he was allowed too. The context of this is that as a public broadcast channel, CBS or NBC or ABC or FOX are subject to federal FCC regulations that HBO is not. If NBC broadcast what Jimmy said without bleeping it they would be violating the law and subject the fines and legal action. HBO is a premium channel that is not publicly broadcast and thus not subject to the same regulations, so he can say anything he wants on an HBO show.
Well if your a comedian with the skills of JimmyO you can handle interviews better than most. Stephen was not trying to be a d.

There are Stand-up in Hong Kong, Dayo Wong Tze Wah is like the god of standup in Hong Kong. But Jimmy mentioned in his book that Jimmy's Dad was moved from Shanghai to Hong Kong, and because his Dad is not very integrated in the Hong Kong culture, which made him the Shanghai kid in Hong Kong.

Might be his "style" like Letterman. That and maybe he was caught off guard in that Jimmy O. Yang isn't the stereotypical dude who immigrated from Hk/China. He lost his accent. His a sense of humour (having done stand-up & bieng in a comedy sitcom). Went to an American College. Etc.
Most HKers never do no matter how many years they've been living in the US or Canada. That and Jimmy chose comedy...very "un-Asian thing to do". Usually a death sentence in most middle to upper-middle class families. Jimmy found his niche. There should be more Asians like Jimmy...brave enough to follow their own dreams even if it's not what their parents wanted for them.
Also, having lived in Toronto all my life as a man of "colour" I've noticed there are still many white people who feel a little uncomfortable around Asians or any one visibly "ethnic" looking (not white basically). They have that forced smile but would never have that person over for dinner. Would say "Hello" at work but not invite Jimmy to a baseball game. Of course there are exceptions. I'm just saying maybe Stephen is like that too. Lives in an neighbourhood where there are no people of colour. Only time he is among people of colour is at work doing the show or walking on the street away from his home.
But, to me I didn't see Stephen as being that awkward...nothing like Letterman. So maybe I'm wrong about Stephen. Maybe his 2nd best buddy is Chinese-American.
Some Asians complain about how there' s hardly any Asians in film or sitcoms. Well, that's because there isn't that much choice. Acting and stand-up is pretty low on career choices in the minds of most Asian parents. And I'd think most non-Asians too. But more so Asians--very practical. "Ma and Pa...I wanna race Indy Cars when I grow up!" Says Bobby Chan. SMACK!!!! Realistically the chances of making it...even sort of...in entertainment is as easy as studying fashion design and hoping to be the next Giogio Armani.

I legit JUST posted almost the same thing before I even saw this. He seemed really off and almost nervous like. There was hardly any banter whatsoever... What a bad interview to have for your first time on the couch.

Colbert himself isn't quick enough for interviews, that's why this one was so awkward. He was good as pretending to be a pundit, but being himself is a new animal I guess.

The abrupt pause made it seem a bit cut short or awkward. A closing statement then a thank you would've been better. "Well I have a . . Hunch. . You'll get a lot more opportunities. Jimmy O Yaeng everybody!" Snaps and points to the camera with one arched eyebrow👏

This is literally the only moment in this overall terribly handled interview that I'll given Steven a pass because he needed to cut to commercial very quickly and get a plug in and Jimmy had already stepped over the cue.
Stephen Colbert is really good at letting the guest talk, but he sometimes lacks that pingpong between him and his guests. Here he failed to grab a lot of the jokes from Yang which is a letdown, unfortunately.
Most likely it's a cultural thing. I understood all the jokes because I'm Asian and I understand the basis of the joke.

I'm not Asian either (though I did grow up in a town with thousands of Asian immigrants from all over), but really all you gotta be to grasp Jimmy's humour is human. It might help that I've had so many Asian friends, but the baseline is just, "Life, amirite?"

This is the first I've seen of this guy. He's awesome. It's so great to see so many Asian American comedians doing so well because the immigrant experience of bridging two cultures with crazy old school parents provides a lot of comedy gold.

I guess the closest thing China has to stand up comedy is xiang sheng( 相声) which involves two having a back-and-forth conversation. One person leads and delivers the punchlines while the other person supports by asking questions to keep the conversation going and reacting to the punchlines.
It’s 棟篤笑 or 是但噏. 相聲is something else.
Stand up comedy has gained tremendous popularity in China the last couple of years. It’s called 脱口秀，which was originally translated from the English word “talk show”, but over time has evolved to mean “stand up comedy”.

Jimmy is the kind of inspiration and role model Chinese people need. And this is coming from your typical Asian UCLA science major graduate who immigrated to the USA at the age of 13 the same way he did (and I am also from Hong Kong, like holy shit). I honestly believe I would have never been able to do what he does. I think he is amazingly funny. He uses his background and what he knows so well in his comedy. Asians, especially oriental Asians, need people like him, to show ourselves that we are not just a bunch of quiet small humans who are good at math and science, and that we can and are free to do anything we want and love and still be successful at it.
J - that's why he is my favorite Chinese American actor and comedian.

I get that you are appreciating Jimmy's talent, but he is such a bad representation because he is saying something untrue about China, and people would believe him because he looks Chinese. Forms of stand up comedy like xiangsheng exists for over a hundred years, he probably doesn't know about it because he is actually from hongkong, and there he goes on American TV saying there's no stand up in china. In fact, stand up has becoming more and more mainstream that there are now stand up comedy variety programs in china and they are widely popular, if Jimmy o yang actually did he research he wouldn't have said that.
@Andrea Martinez xiangsheng is already very mainstream in China for decades, it is traditional form of stand up comedy that date back to 1800s. Jimmy is from hong kong, so he speaks Cantonese and maybe thats why he is not exposed to it, but to make such a comment is very irresponsible. None in his city does not mean none in entire China, and look at how this talk show spinned his words to write this title.

This is third awkward interview I've seen with Colbert. First Bill Burr, then Jim Jefferies, now him. Conan handles comedians way better than Colbert imo
I honestly used to turn the TV off when he did the interviews at the end of the Colbert Report cause they were so bad. Don't know how he landed a talk show...
The Burr one was annoying cause Bill was killing. Colbert's awkwardness kept killing the joke. I don't think he has a good sense of humor

It's hit or miss with Stephen as an interviewer. Luckily for us, Jimmy is so funny that he was able to be hilarious in spite of a weirdly lukewarm interviewer. This show gets a huge audience - much bigger than "Silicon Valley" - so I'm sure Jimmy gained lots of new fans just from this one appearance.
No, Stephen is just being honest with himself. If this is Fallon interviewing, we would all be commenting here and complaining about his fake laughs. So lets deal with this shall we?

Jimmy is a natural. I will watch more of his comedy here on You-Tube. I watched one of his stand-up routines last night. I normally don't watch Stephen Colbert but when I saw that Jimmy O. Yang was on I had to watch it.

This guy is my hero cuz I'm 13 in HK and I really wanna be a comedian. I hope I can make it like him too. Except I guess I have a head start now because I learn in an international school which gives me more culture and better english. 13 years ago, there's may not literally stand-up show in China. But now it's different, there's a lot of actors doing a good job about that. I love them.
Exactly! Chinese comedy is exploding now! I migrated from Hong Kong to CA many years ago, watched a lot of US comedy sitcoms and stand-up routines on TV and UA-cam. I love to joke around and my chinese friends thought I joked too much (they didn’t get my humor I guess, but my black and white friends thought I was funny). Anyway I had no idea chinese in Mainland China could be that funny until I started watching the comedy contests in China several years back! The jokes by these chinese comedians were/are original, creative, and hilarious! I am in awe!! Although I dislike the part when the funnier comedian got voted off while the less funny one got to advance (much like I detest American Idol show voted by popularity rather than true talent!), also the comedy company owner’s suspicious act of steering the audience to vote for company staff comedians vs. a non-staff comedians, I am still anxious to see the next episode (#10) of Rock & Roast Season 5 which will decide the winner. But I may not be happy with the result due to the reasons noted above, will see…

A bit disappointed that the judging was based on individuals’ one-time latest performance rather than from cumulative scores. I was especially surprised and disappointed that Tong Mu Nan got only 7th place 😵😔; he was so good that he deserved a much higher placement. Also Qiu Rui should have gotten a higher score. Obviously, Tong and Qui are my favorites. Now Season 5 is done, I am at a loss-already started missing it!🥺
I just so happen to be Chinese and I can say that there is stand up comedy in China, but not in Hong Kong (I guess), it's called "相声(Xiang Sheng)" and it's one of China's most traditional art forms.

+ Sean Wang Remember, Jimmy left HK as a kid, and when he lived there, HK was not China; he left Asia in 1999 or 2000, so he lived in the British colony pre-Handover. It's possible that as a child in Hong Kong he wouldn't have been exposed to any standup comedy that did exist, and of course the entertainment industry has changed since the Yang family made their move to the US. Because of my father's business, I lived in Hong Kong for a few years as a child; we left in 1988 without ever visiting the PRC. Now, every time I return to HK, I'm surprised by how much the city has changed.

hello Nelia- but please allow me to say this that things are not that rigid like before nowadays ofcourse things are changing bit by bit- in asian culture parents do have some say in their childrens career ( which is not rigid now) & it is not necessarily a bad thing. (However, this is not a comparison with the west)
The comedian is hilarious but the host is dead inside, a regular Buzz Killington. He’s throwing funny quips at him and there’s no bounce back just dead pan expression. At least Jimmy Fallon is willing to fake it.

I agree. Colbert reminds me of when Chevy Chase had a talk show for like, five minutes, and he was very condescending and basically sucked the life out of the interviews. He seemed to want to keep them from shining much the way Colbert does here.

I’m a Chinese, and trust me it’s very easy to do such accent. It’s just like pronouncing words in mandarin, with the characteristic pause and stuff. That said, I find Jimmy a really funny and talented guy.

I don't think the people who have never been outside of US territory actually realize how odd the pledge of allegiance and flag worshiping is to the rest of the world. Not counting dictatorships like North-Korea or the time when Germany went way past alt-right.

Jesus, this is funny. I've come back to this same vid 2 years later and watching that first clip of him on Silicon Valley still makes me burst out laughing.
I agree, this was a little painful. I normally like Stephen's skits, and I've seen some great interviews. Like Emma Stone, Tom Hanks, Neil Degrasse Tyson, even fucking celebrity chefs. I've also seen some awkward ones where he does his best to save the interview from wooden guests. But this time it felt the roles were reversed. I don't know, there were so many opening to start down an interesting line of questioning. Being on the Arsenio Hall show, comedy in HK vs US, being introduced to Western culture. Even the point that Asian Americans are so underrepresented in TV and film in any role, let alone lead ones. Sadly, it felt like he was so unfamiliar with the culture that he was afraid of committing an offense, or he didn't care to know.
I feel that Stephen's most comfortable interviewing people who are the same kind of "polite liberal" that he is. Jimmy is too rough around the edges to fit Stephen's vibe, and the way he deals with stereotypes doesn't quite align with mainstream liberal view. Not bashing liberals btw.
This is exactly the type of vibe that I'm getting from this. I'm an Asian dude, and I've come across some liberal types of people who either just don't get or aren't comfortable with a lot of my kind of humor. It's like they're afraid to laugh about it.

Great points, sirs. I generally like Stephen’s interviews. But he very rarely interviews Asian dudes. When Ronny Chieng was on the show, Stephen also barely said or responded with anything. Ronny Chieng’s humor is also racial in the same way. So that unfamiliarity might be it.
Sometimes, I don't know, Stephen can't really goof around with the guests. Or he seems off. I'm not some Conan fanboy, but if Jimmy was on Conan, I feel this wouldnt be as stiff.

The audience - both in the studio & at home - found Jimmy hilarious. I've lost count of the people I know who became fans & started following him after seeing him on Colbert... even though Colbert himself was super-awkward and didn't seem to "get" what Jimmy was doing! There will be a big future in comedy & entertainment for Jimmy O Yang.
