  • This is a segment from my "Live Q&A" with Demetrius ( www.youtube.co... ) where Demetrius talks about what he calls "The Competitor Cycle". I think this is something WE ALL go through as pool players while we are learning and getting better at the game. I know I've been through this cycle multiple times and after hearing about this cycle I have a better understanding of trying to get back to the "Beginners Mind" quicker!
    Thanks ‪@mnpoolbootcamp5133‬ for this! I really needed it and I'm sure others will benefit from this too!

    This was very on point. Especially the call outs on our competitive narcissism. The nerves due to "fear of being exposed"- we are not truly confident, we are just gassing ourselves up. True confidence comes from putting in the work. If we were really good, we would know so before we even entered the tourney. But instead, we're there trying to prove something to others and to ourselves

      Thank you! Yes, you're right on. I joke that anytime we think to ourselves "I should be able to make this shot" it actually means the opposite: We're not sure if we can make this shot. How do I know? Because during the shots that come up that are so easy we feel no pressure and truly know we can make we don't try to talk ourselves into it, we just shoot it in! Being aware of this is really useful. "I should make this" creates pressure because we know we might not and so we are trying to control something we can't control. It is a good reminder that we might miss, and that's ok, now let's have fun testing ourselves against it. Thanks for the comment!

      Yes! I keep telling myself this! Last week, I missed an 8 ball shot STAIGHT IN THE POCKET! This was during the first game, and that was it for the match! I got swept and gave the guy a rackless. I don't practice and just expect myself to get better? I know it is totally my mindset while playing. I'm nervous and shaky down to the last ball. I don't have a pre-shot routine. If I practiced, it would increase my confidence.
      BTW, I came back to pool after a 12 year hiatus. I lost all 4 matches as a 5 and was bumped down to a 4. And still, I've won only 2 matches out of 16 matches, while getting swept most of the time. It's killing my mentality. Did I really expect to continue to be a 5 after not playing for over a decade? Geez!

      @@JeanneEdelman-gr5ox I sometimes remind myself this: I've seen Shane and Filler and the best in the world miss open shots under pressure. Do I really think I'm so much better than them that I shouldn't ever miss too? When you think it through it is amazing how silly our own expectations can be!

    When I first started playing league, I almost never missed the money ball. Because I didn't have super high expectations for myself, and sometimes I would even think "well, if I miss this, it will just show me this is a shot I need to practice." But over time, as the wins started adding up and people started complimenting my game, I started dogging it more. My ego had grown and so had my expectations for myself.

    Wow - really needed to hear this. after a tournament this past weekend where i had high expectations and visualizations of how well i was going to do, i was ready to throw my sell sticks and darn near had an adult temper tantrum at how horrible i did against one of the worst players in the league. i kept slipping into a cesspool of negative thinking and no matter what I did I couldn't pull myself out. i remember thinking at the time... how i hated pool, hated the tournament, hated myself. i have never felt like this before. i love pool. and now, when i walk up to the table i find myself hoping to make a shot instead of having the confidence of knowing that i will make it. I'm trying to figure out a way to get back to where i was. worst slump I've ever been in. my husband who's an excellent pool player, tells me to just play to have fun. i can't wrap my head around that. i've always played to win. I have to listen to this one again

    For players who focus on their own play, I think ego-death is a far greater concern than holding ourselves up to an ego driven ideal. You can approach your game with complete humbleness but if you miss enough shots in a row, it eats at your mental and physical ability to not only compete but also the ability to maintain stance, breathing, shot aiming, stoke management and eventually pot the ball.

    This explains something that happened recently that I didn't even know how to ask. Ego was my problem. I've had streaks of playing and not playing for about 30 years. I finally got back in to pool somewhat serious earlier this year. I wasn't watching UA-cam videos on pool before, now I watch and learn a lot on UA-cam and practice a lot. And I just recently started wearing contact lenses and it made quite a difference. I was playing on a table with 4 inch pockets and I was breaking and running about half of the games against my friend in 8 Ball, BCA rules. I never played that good this table, I guess the contact lenses helped out. My friend said I should play in the tournament tonight, so I did. I kind of knew who most of the players were and we were playing the tournament on tables with 4-5/8 inch pockets. I had the mindset that I'm going to slaughter these guys, and I can't miss on these bigger pockets. Well, I played like crap, and must have suffered in my head. I kept wondering how can I play good on 9 foot Gold Crown with 4 inch pockets to losing to lowly players on 4-5/8 pockets. And I had my friend say I'm not playing good. And saying I don't play good in tournaments. Well, it was my first tournament in over a decade. I thought all of my practice means I will automatically beat the lower players. That was very wrong, especially it was just a game to one. Anyone can win one game. Later on I played in tournaments where I know there are people as good as me, maybe some not as good, and some better than me. I played much better when I thought my opponent was on my level or higher. There are definitely some mental issues going on when I play in tournaments and just need to focus on the table, not my opponent. Sometimes I see the newer players really nervous playing me and I do fine. One time I played against a really good player and saw he was nervous and I was like why is this guy so nervous? I won the first game, almost broke and ran the second game, but lost the 2nd and 3rd game. I honestly felt like it was the first time I was nervous playing pool in the 3rd game. I was like, am I actually nervous? I'm never nervous playing pool. And I was like yeah, I'm nervous. It was weird that I was trying to observe my nervousness to see what it's like. Anyways, I need to get rid of my ego and play more tournaments. I'm getting better and better in the tournaments. It might help me to play in some money matches.

    • @demetriusjelatis4753
      @demetriusjelatis4753 11 місяців тому +2

      Yeah, it's a funny deal. That's why so often you'll hear people say they play better against better players. It's super funny. They are so outmatched their ego doesn't invest in the outcome of the match and they play really well, then the ego creeps in and takes credit for the good performance. Then they play weaker players in their leagues and feel like "I've played against REAL players, players you all wouldn't dream of beating, I've watched youtube videos, I am sophisticated, watch as I regale you with an exhibition of how pool should look..." Needless to say that usually doesn't end up too good for the player! :)
      It's a complicated journey with many ups and downs and pitfalls, and just like with the physical game of pool you never have it solved. Just have fun trying is all I can offer. Good luck!

    Wow, this is so amazing! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge...in your experience...is there a keyword you tell yourself to train your brain to reset to beginners mindset, or is it more involved than that?

      @demetriusjelatis4753 11 місяців тому +2

      Thank you for the kinds words. I'm glad you took something out of it!
      In theory it is really simple; get back to beginner's mind. In practice it is trickier. We can get very attached to different ego stories that can snag us and keep us stuck. It happens to everyone. A lot of what I teach in my mental game are techniques to help identify where we are getting stuck and untangle ourselves. I do groups of three and have everyone bring 2-3 situations that trip them up, then as I teach my approach I use those situations as examples (as well as providing some of my own).
      In the end, though, anything beyond the here and now of playing the game is a fantasy that we can stop investing in any time we choose.

    cool synopsis of what we’ve all gone thru over n over again absolutely correct. BUT also worth saying. it’s the ego annoyance when you do lose. that makes you practice and get better i think that’s what really makes a better player over the long term have to learn to channel the annoyance and humiliation of losing into practicing more 😊

    • @demetriusjelatis4753
      @demetriusjelatis4753 11 місяців тому +1

      There are different forms of motivation. One is to use the emotions that come from ego desire. But there are other fuels such as passion and enthusiasm to grow and challenge yourself. This discussion goes down interesting roads such as 'which is better', and there are many forks in that road such as 'what do you mean by better? Higher level of performance or a happier life and journey?' I, personally, don't think that the fuel works better for either. But everyone gets to follow their own path.
