my Father was in the 1st Marine Division with the 5th Marines on Cape Goulester and Pelielu, I'm sure he knew this Man. Some of the things he told sounds like what my Father told me. He was a FDC (fire direction control) Marine with A battery. He went back to Papuvo but he didn't get to go Home, He went to Okinawa he was 22 years old when the war ended, he still didn't go home He was sent to China to guard trains from the communist for about 2 months with the 1st Marine Division. He also went to San Diego for his Boot Camp and Sniper Training and Artillery training. Then to New Zealand for jungle war training and more Sniper Training, then to Australia where he met up with the 1st Marine Division that had fought on Guadalcanal. CPL William Earl Caine A battery 5th Marines 1st Marine Division FCD Man.

What a great accounting from Sgt Hawkins. Reading history is one thing; hearing about it from those who were there is quite another. Excellent story!

My great uncle was with the First Marine Div. Bismark, Cape Glouster and was lost on Peleliu 9/44. Pretty cool to think these men might have served with him.

Sgt. Hawkins was not “stationed” he was part of the amphibious invasions that fought to to take these islands and real estate from the Japanese Imperial Forces...God bless this Marine....

What is your point? It was called island hopping. They had to get their mail delivered somewhere so I'm sure "stationed" means mailing address. And don't bother trying to correct me,, Col., I was a Seabee and we studied these landings to down to the last detail.

Elmer Hawkins would of road through Carrizo Gorge on the rail road on his way to San Diego. That would of been shortly before the rail road ran into Mexico before coming back over the boarder into San Diego. That rail road line is no longer active but it is fun to explore that part of the rail road that runs through Carrizo Gorge.

My Uncle Don Wells was an Ensign on the USS Barnett. He talked about dropping General Roosevelt off. They took on wounded. He never talked about the gore only saying it was "Hell." He turned 100 Saturday. He went around to schools as part of a Kiwanis program around Alexandria, Va. with veterans to discuss WWII with them.
He went to Sicily after that for a landing, and then on to the Pacific never talking about it.
