Great warrior. Did not know he was with Captain Everett Pope ( who was awarded the MOH in 1945) in that particular bloody skirmish at Peleliu. On several WWII Pacific TV documentaries about Peleliu, this event is sometimes mentioned and Pope himself in clips describes that action. Pope died exactly on his 90th birthday.. Sgt Dreves is a first class war hero.

This man was my grandfather, and what a tremendous man he was. Not only was he a courageous soldier who fought and bled for his country, but he was so caring and compassionate and adored spending time with his grandchildren in a myriad of ways. Fishing, archaeology, crafting sculptures in bottles, he had many engaging hobbies and loved to share them with my two cousins and I every chance he had. And of course, hearing his war stories was always an amazing experience. I love you and miss you terribly, grampy. - Richard

I watch these guys and see my father. Born in 1921. Called up in March of 42 for the duration plus 1 year. Served in the Army Air Corps.Learned to fly and in training was injured in a lightning strike. He was retrained as a flight mechanic. He said his injury saved his life. It affected his vision and he was washed out before completion. In later years he was able to deduce that most of his graduating class of pilots died in bombing raids over Germany. He served honorably. Father of 6 children. His girlfriend, my mother waited for him for 4 years writing daily. Their love for each other was a constant. A wise and gentle man he died in 91. Hardly a day goes by I don't think of him. He was my father, my best friend and my fishing buddy.

What a wonderful Hero, I know from the time frame he said that he and my Father went to Boot Camp together. My Father tried to enlist in January 1942 but he was turned down because he was color blind, but the recruiter told him go down to the Marine recruiter because the Marines were going to do away with that. So my Father went down every Friday and he said not yet. He was working in the shipyard as A Boiler Maker in Mobile Alabama and every Friday he would go see the Recruiter and be told no. That went on until November 10 1942, the Marine Corp Aniveresty and he said I can take you now. He insisted and was put on a train headed to San Diego. He had Sniper training as he was GREAT on the Rifle range, the only man that shot better than him was the Gunnery Sergeant over the Rifle Range who had lost one arm in WW1.He was in the invasions of Cape Goulester, Pelielu and Okinawa and several smaller battles and he went to China to guard trains from the Communist. He is my HERO, PASSED AWAY MARCH 18TH 2018. SEMPER FI MARINES. If you have anything that has to be destroyed overnight call the MARINES.

my Father was in the 1st Marine Division with the 5th Marines on Cape Goulester and Pelielu, I'm sure he knew this Man. Some of the things he told sounds like what my Father told me. He was a FDC (fire direction control) Marine with A battery. He went back to Papuvo but he didn't get to go Home, He went to Okinawa he was 22 years old when the war ended, he still didn't go home He was sent to China to guard trains from the communist for about 2 months with the 1st Marine Division. He also went to San Diego for his Boot Camp and Sniper Training and Artillery training. Then to New Zealand for jungle war training and more Sniper Training, then to Australia where he met up with the 1st Marine Division that had fought on Guadalcanal. Elmer Hawkins would of road through Carrizo Gorge on the rail road on his way to San Diego. That would of been shortly before the rail road ran into Mexico before coming back over the boarder into San Diego. That rail road line is no longer active but it is fun to explore that part of the rail road that runs through Carrizo Gorge.

Peeking into caves and surprising Japanese soldiers but instead of releasing his safety he accidentally released his magazine clip and it went clank clank clank down the mountain. He ended up tossing a grenade in the cave and ducking.
