3:22 The question "Does Google have a huge database of every trip you take..." baffles me a little - I mean, obviously yes, Google Timeline in the Maps?
I was waiting to hear more about this after that question, but sadly, their research was severely lacking on this one. It appears that significant portions of content for the topic came from third party sources this time. Did they even bother to contact Google at all?
I've been using Waze for a few years now. Although it really is an awesome GPS, sometimes it likes to pick a route that really takes you on an adventure, especially on road trips. Last year I was driving home from college in Michigan to New Jersey through Canada. As soon as we passed through Buffalo, it took me off the highway and through a network of country roads in western NY. Sure it added an hour onto my trip, but the views of the rolling hills were absolutely beautiful.
They openly say that they retain all location data. They also put it up publicly to view on timeline. It pretty much goes back to the first time you owned an android phone lol.
Only if you have location and location history on. I just checked mine and history is on but there are hardly any entries since I only turn on location when I use Maps (which for most trips is not needed).
Tennessee has actually used this at state level. It's TDOT SmartWay and features road conditions for all interstates and major cities, and includes things like construction and all, but also allows the user to view live traffic cams and flooded roads and events that are going on around town. If you're ever here in TN and need to know why I-40 is suddenly at a standstill, I highly recommend looging on (it's a webpage, not an app).
I can verify that they log your trips.Google always shows me places that I've visited before, regardless of whether or not I use GPS to get there. After a week at my new job it started telling me what route to take and time to leave to make it there on time, and I didn't ONCE use the GPS to get there. They also email me reports about the new places that I've visited each month, as if I didn't already know that.
I remember reading in a computer magazine about 15 years ago (around 2001) about some university developing technology to measure traffic using mobile phones. My thoughs at that time: "One day that will be very useful"
In the UK, it's actually data collected from the Highways Agency whom has cctv and traffic measurement devices and police data for all main roads (Motorways and A Roads, and most of inner city Roads)
Alex Isaac Alvarez lmao, Ikr. He actually said Waze is better than Google maps. They'll incorporate the two into Maps soon at which point they'll probably discontinue Waze.
Please don't ever change TechQuickie, don't force memes into your videos and try to be "cool" (like LTT), I really appreciate these videos especially with my college computing work! Keep it up :-)
You can see on google maps a log of every single journey you took since you bought your phone so long as you have location survives turned on. Its actualy really accurate. I can see where i went on my cruise 2 years ago!!
I don't know if this is an issue elsewhere, but here in Norway we have a lot of public transport, so where buses stop there's always small, seemingly random, patches of red along prefectly green roads.
naufalap many phones these days can acquire significantly less accurate GPS data for a minimal battery draw. It's often used by apps that apps want to retrieve your location in the background, such as Google Maps and Waze. The high accuracy GPS readouts can be reserved for more important cases, like realtime navigation while the app is open.
These days, GPS data isn't necessary to track your location. As Linus mentioned, Location Services gather data from the nearest Network Towers and pin point your location. Google also began gathering location information from the nearby WiFi Hotspots. Malicious apps can still track you down even if you turn off the location services. So next time, put your phone on Airplane Mode when you've to stay in stealth mode.
Waze is great, when you travel 20+ miles a day one way for worksites in the Portland Oregon area, it cuts off significant amounts of time by routing me through random neighborhoods and backroads that are empty. As opposed to sitting in a traffic jam, it will warn me ahead of time that traffic has slowed down and to take the next exit or turn at the traffic signal to avoid it, etc. To choose between: Google knows where I drive VS. Getting home/work in half the time.... I'll choose the quicker time.
I have always found it interesting that Google Maps Navigation ETA's are never accurate, unless you are part of a herd or swarm. If you drive the speed limit on the highway at 7AM, your ETA will continue to increase, unless you speed up to 15-20MPH, or whatever unit of speed Canadians use, over the speed limit, which is what Google is seeing as the actual point A to point B times. :)
Google maps is totally inaccurate. All they do is assume everyone drives an average of 65 mph, never hits traffic, never hits construction. Bogus. Also, they don't account for normal rest stops on long trips. I usually take the total trip mileage and divide by 50 to get a more accurate estimation for trips over 200-300 miles.
Google does keep a location history of everywhere you've been since you owned an android phone. It actually is available for you to view on Google timeline. Look it up. It's actually pretty useful if you want to know where you where on a certain day. I often use it to see how long I was at a place for work.
I was expecting more details around the tech. There is much more happens to track the real time traffic, like how Google collaborate with telcom providers etc.
Actually, there is a section on the Google maps app called "timeline" that keeps all the data stored on it. So I discovered it by accident about a year ago. And it had trips I took from years and years ago. Including where we stopped to eat. So yes Google does store where you're going on it's servers as I was able to access it with every new phone I bought. You can opt out of the timeline... But I'm assuming it just doesn't tell you where you went. But keeps it on record regardless
Victor Ogelle I’ve deliberately started using Apple maps instead of Google Maps, because Apple goes out of their way to not know who you are. Google may “delete” your trip, but they are definitely sharing your information to advertisers and Apple does not.
Apple Maps was pretty bad when it launched in 2012 along with iOS 6. But since then (especially since iOS 10 and even 11) it has improved so much that you can totally use it just like you would use Waze or Google Maps, and you wouldn't notice a difference.
Google definitely keeps all your location data. I recently downloaded Google's data on me and the file contains all the locations I've ever used Google Maps since I got a smartphone.
I always wondered this. I evacuated to Kentucky when Irma was coming. Google maps not only was spot on every single time, but it was also with pinpoint accuracy. I kinda thought to myself that maybe Google was using your GPS technology to determine everyones speed in a given distance and if below a certain threshold, it deems it a congested area.
I was traveling in China, and of course Google is blocked there, my location, data and everything was off. I only connected few times at restaurant WiFi and when I returned home, i got a notification from Google to rate all the restaurants, hotels etc that I had been to! I just want to say that if you have anything google installed, good luck staying out of their radar!
I wanted my privacy so turned all of this off but people could still see me. One person literally looked at me, I feel so invaded! Seriously though, sharing this kind of data is good for everyone I keep my data shared since it is a contribution.
Can you do a video on how Google Maps computes a route from one point to another? And does this route stay unchanged during the length of the journey, or does it vary dynamically?
I love google maps, very useful in my line of work (motorcycle courier) in London, like my A-Z map it's a useful tool for those postcodes and streets I can't find in the A-Z. The timeline is useful, I can review where I've been and work out better routes for going to certain places. Best of all the live traffic updates which again is useful in my job. Like I said it's just a tool and a very good one too.
Google 100 percent keeps your location data just serch timeline on google and sign in with your google account it will tell you every place you have ever been
What I was hoping to learn from this but still remains unanswered is how up to date is Google Traffic,i.e. how quickly does it update what we see on the screen of our mobile device? Is it fractions of a second, seconds, minutes or even hours?
I disabled Google Maps ability to use my data as even when I didn't open Maps it was using a huge chunk of my battery life. Amazing what things you agree to when you accept an apps permissions.
What about the safety concerns, in Latam had been a lot of cases where thieves used false Waze reports to reroute cars to unsafe places and carjack, steal people's stuff or even kidnap them
Never looked at your Timeline part of the Google maps menu on the left? Definitely remembers where you started and where you finished. Usually at your house
even with location services off the cell tower triangulation still works.. scary that your location is so accurate they can tell if you're driving or not
Google maps is great, it lacks the features of wave, but it's far clearer at giving up and coming junctions etc. I use g maps mostly, but if I got to an e entrance like football, where a big portion of 50k people are using Google maps, even the re routes end in jams. I've found Nokias Here Maps perfect for this situation as it offers some of the most bizarre routes, which for busy occasions is great. Also I'd your teaching overseas Here maps makes a great fall back opinions (or even primary) as you can download whole countries before you leave the house. So they all have their usages. Apple maps may have come along way, but the way it offers the driver info just plain sucks.
0:05 in quebec you can listen to a radio in every region, just listen to it and in 5 minutes you'll know where there's slow downs because of construction or even snow storms. YOU CANT USE YOUR PHONE WHILE DRIVING! THE RADIO YOU CAN! Altough mapping directions BEFORE YOU LEAVE and listenning to your phone while it speaks like a derpy GPS does work...
Driving through my wife’s home town, Google Maps indicated there was heavy traffic on the main street. There were zero cars on the street when we drove through. However, there were about 50 people hanging out at the corner bar. So, even if it is just a bunch of people close to a street google will count it as traffic. Interesting.
You may have been kidding but here in Vermont back in february there was actually a highway that was closed briefly because of a maple syrup spill, both police and fire were called.
I don't think it's any more complicated than sampling position over time. The delta in position is distance, dividing by the delta in time gives speed, feed that up (possibly somehow anonymized) through Google Services which is constantly running in the background, and samples along a route which are going farther per unit of time are not congested, and those which don't go as far per same unit of time are.
Google GPS: "There has been 5 accidents, construction, 5 lane freeway narrowed down to 1 lane, the bridge has collapsed, a baby is being delivered in the middle of the road, traffic grinding halt for 7 hours, but you're still on the fastest route...'
Linus. Google DOES keep all your location data. Go into Google maps app and view your timeline! It can tell you everywhere you have been, what time you were there and how fast you got there.
@ 1:56 - that is me on the Motor Bike, Cutting in front the traffic shot is of an intersection between the ANZAC bridge and Victoria Rd in Sydney Australia.
You missed mentioning the MAIN way Google Maps knows traffic conditions; Your smartphone sends Google a signal with your location every 2 secs, even when your GPS is turned off. It says this on the Terms and Services that you click "Agree" with each Google update on your Android phone.
this guy totally looks like the guy from linus tech tips

yep
thats cause that channel has turned to clickbait garbage if it isnt a Brandon camera video.
Ltt=Linus talks tomuch
This is more concise and tells specific tips, ltt doesn't give any tips at all, but gives you material to drool or laugh at
I think this is reason why he made new channel. (for be helpful. not like Ltt> hey boyz here is new shit what we discovered what u can do)

for someone that isn't a privacy freak, that is like the single most useful feature from google.
You can correct your driving path automatically in the timeline, it's great.
Sasza Stanczew I like it. I think it'll be cool to look back on it in the future.
Syukri Lajin Yep! Especially if you have to track mileage for your job!

"Google deletes data" haha good one.
Kevin lol don't be so fucking naive
They payed him for sure
Data costs money to store, some data just couldn't be monetized or isn't critical so there's no incentive to store them for long.
They openly say that they retain all location data. They also put it up publicly to view on timeline. It pretty much goes back to the first time you owned an android phone lol.
Vegalus are you soft in the head or what?
On google maps there is a timeline tab that shows everywhere you have been and at the exact time and it goes back years

Creepy

Make sure to grab an empty 2 liter to fill up, then you'll have plenty of syrup for at least the next couple months.
AShifter fat
you're not Canadian
Google Traffic is almost entirely what I use Maps for. Really useful alternative to waiting for a cable news or radio update
In the UK, it's actually data collected from the Highways Agency whom has cctv and traffic measurement devices and police data for all main roads (Motorways and A Roads, and most of inner city Roads)

I always have my gps turned off to save battery.
I think everyone has their gps turned off, just turns it on when needed
Mine is almost always on

Wow, I always wondered this, great video guys!
Almost everyone gave up on complaining about the intro. FINALLY
This is a wholesomely canadian video. Thanks Linus.
Whatever you do, don't use Apple Maps!!
Victor Ogelle why
Victor Ogelle I’ve deliberately started using Apple maps instead of Google Maps, because Apple goes out of their way to not know who you are. Google may “delete” your trip, but they are definitely sharing your information to advertisers and Apple does not.

I drive for a living and Google Traffic has saved me from being stuck in a jam quite a few times.
Google Traffic - YES!

This is awesome. Ive been wondering this for a while.
This is really cool, I always assumed that they get the info from DOT and just put in in app form nice.
What I was hoping to learn from this but still remains unanswered is how up to date is Google Traffic,i.e. how quickly does it update what we see on the screen of our mobile device? Is it fractions of a second, seconds, minutes or even hours?
Excellent video it's very useful feature to know about traffic information to know what is happening on the road
I disabled Google Maps ability to use my data as even when I didn't open Maps it was using a huge chunk of my battery life.
Amazing what things you agree to when you accept an apps permissions.
What about the safety concerns, in Latam had been a lot of cases where thieves used false Waze reports to reroute cars to unsafe places and carjack, steal people's stuff or even kidnap them
My favorite Waze feature is that when someone is pan handling on a street corner I can let everyone know there's garbage on the road.
Seriously, my boss asks me how this works yesterday, and you just happen to post an answer today? Perfect timing!
Never looked at your Timeline part of the Google maps menu on the left? Definitely remembers where you started and where you finished. Usually at your house

Waze is really good in bigger cities because you get the best real time road conditions, but in smaller cities and towns it does almost nothing. XD
Off all the places to show as a sample map at 0:40 it's a town I visit all the time. Neat.
Cellular triangulation tracking since circa 2007? So the data comes from the telecom side? Cause neither Android or iOS were present at the time
actually, the road networks have speed sensors in the road to measure instant road congestion as well that google uses as well.

Google keeps data from where you are just look at your timeline on Google maps
Linus seems like he had a lot of sunbathing. There are alot of red spots on his skin...
I knew it. That must also be how google knows how busy a store is
It totally does. In fact, it keeps a timeline of all your movements daily. They don't even hide it! You can find it on Google Maps under Your Timeline
The amazing part is traffic info in roads located in the middle of nowhere, in the Philippines of all places.
Driving through my wife’s home town, Google Maps indicated there was heavy traffic on the main street. There were zero cars on the street when we drove through. However, there were about 50 people hanging out at the corner bar. So, even if it is just a bunch of people close to a street google will count it as traffic. Interesting.
I always thought it used data from other phones
According to Google Maps there's almost always a huge traffic jam outside of my house when in reality there's no traffic at all.
Waze is the GOAT, one of the few apps that actually gets better when more people start to use it
You may have been kidding but here in Vermont back in february there was actually a highway that was closed briefly because of a maple syrup spill, both police and fire were called.

Linus. Google DOES keep all your location data. Go into Google maps app and view your timeline! It can tell you everywhere you have been, what time you were there and how fast you got there.

You missed mentioning the MAIN way Google Maps knows traffic conditions; Your smartphone sends Google a signal with your location every 2 secs, even when your GPS is turned off. It says this on the Terms and Services that you click "Agree" with each Google update on your Android phone.
