I’m a Toronto FC fan and I was sitting at the opposite end of the stadium. When I saw that save in the distance, all I could say was “wow, that was an amazing save” in a defeated, monotone voice.
I still remember my father falling to his knees and screaming with joy after that save, we hadn't won the game yet but he's a former goalkeeper so good saves are just as important to him. We were celebrating with beers in hand not much longer afterwards!
@@TheBigDBandito No, he had a bad knee injury while in a US Olympic development team and had to give up a playing career. Closest he got after that was playing indoor soccer with DaMarcus Beasley.
As a Toronto FC fan, the only reason I can get through this video is the 2017 revenge season. In the moment it was a tough to accept losing without giving up a shot against, but looking back 5 years later, what a fantastic save and the start of an great rivalry between Toronto and Seattle.
I remember staying up into the wee hours of the morning to watch this match. Amidst the sleep deprivation, the empty beer cans, and the delirium from them both, I just *knew* I had to stay awake. Damn right I wasn't gonna let a 6 hour difference get between me and watching my Sounders grab their first championship.
I remember that Semi-Final back-and-forth between Montréal and Toronto. As an Impact fan, it was heartbreaking, but it was also some of the craziest, most exciting soccer I've ever seen. And as a fan of the rival, that save by Frei against TFC still warms my heart to see.
MLS has a lot of moments worthy of a deep dive. Altidore and Toronto getting revenge on the Sounders the very next year. 2018 ATL United winning in only their second season and being the first Georgia team (college or pro) of the *century* to win a championship. The 2013 MLS finals is still one of the most insane finishes to any championship game I've seen. The entire 2022 season could be a rewind in of itself, not to mention Seattle taking MLS's first CCL trophy or the finals between LAFC and Phillie.
Seattle also has stood out among MLS teams for being so heavy with local talent, from Schmetzer, to Morris, to Yedlin, Neagle, Keller, Wingo, our HGPs are among the best in the league. It's extra special that the team does well because it captures the heart of the city. It's also majority local owned, and many former players still live in the area, such as Montero, Evans, Zakuani.
I love all Rewinders but especially the ones I don't know the outcome of, unfortunately I assumed what would happen from the thumbnail, but I still got chills seeing such an incredible save. gg as always secret base
Astonishing save from Frei. As a fellow goalkeeper, saves like these are incredibly hard. They don't look that way sometimes on a TV screen, but hotdamn, you're off-balance, your reaction time has to be basically instantaneous and I could go on listing reasons why a save like this is so much harder than it looks. Its a perfect storm, where a centimeter to the right or left is the difference between the goal getting scored because your touch wasn't enough to deflect the ball out. Superb work per usual, SB, love your content!
I would love to see more soccer rewinds. One you could do is the Miles Robinson header against Mexico in the Gold Cup 2021 final. Lots to cover there in terms of the Mexican dominance in the tournament the past decade, the Nations League win for the US, and US C squad playing defensively the entire tournament and scoring timely goals to win them games while Mexico did not look like their dominant selves in the group or knock out stages. It truly is a moment in history.

Oh man I remember this moment so vividly freezing at the stadium. We all thought that ball was going in. Gut wrenching PK loss at home especially since TFC outplayed Seattle the whole game. But we'll always have the 2016 Conference championship game to celebrate. That's still the most exciting match I've ever been to. Seeing the highlight still brings tears to my eyes. Even being at the MLS Cup in 2017 doesn't beat it. 😄
This is amazing SB!!! I was fresh out-of-school and working a catering gig for VIPs at BMO field that night. I had done other sports events with that job and usually missed most of the action, but because soccer doesn't have any breaks, I was able to watch nearly every second of the game and get paid for it! I remember this one pretty well - the Steel Army (fans of Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the USL) got together and rented out the back room of a nearby restaurant specifically to watch this. There were two side-tvs for gaming to kill time beforehand (Fifa and Rocket League), food, drinks, a raffle, and then of course watching the game. It's the only time I've gone to one of their events outside of Riverhounds games themselves (work schedule is weird and prevents me from doing a lot of things) but it was a hell of a night.

MLS CUP 2022. LAFC vs Philly Union needs a future rewinder. Former Philly Union own Goalkeeper born in Philadelphia won the game for LAFC by subbing in for an injured goalkeeper and made 2 critical saves in PKs.
I was at the game in the Sounders’ supporter section. Frozen, hoarse from screaming, and not hopeful we’d win. That save was incredible and our section (right on that goal line) saw the play unfold. I though we were done… until we weren’t!
I was a sounder fan there at that game. Horribly underdressed for the game, and we had to be there for an extra 2 hours (1 before and after) because of MLS Supporter section rules. We went nuts when he got that. If this video could have one more thing in it, it should be Nelson Valdez. He had a HORRIBLE regular season, including missing a wide open net. And then scored multiple times to help us in the playoffs. That sounders season was an absolute rollercoaster of emotion.
There are no words strong enough in either of the languages I speak to express my hatred for the Seattle Sounders. But this was a really entertaining video anyway. Please do more soccer content!!!
I was in both 2010 and 2016 MLS Cup Finals. I had a great time during the 2010 game even though TFC wasn't in it. I attended pre-game events outside the stadium and got some signatures from MLS players. I rooted for the underdog Rapids that had one of star players during the first year of TFC in Marvell Wynne on the team. Rapids did win the Cup thanks to their striker Kandji forced FC Dallas a game-deciding own goal while tearing his ACL in the process. The 2016 Final was a tougher watch for me thanks to the cold weather that night. I didn't prepared well enough for the temperature and was in the supporters' section that kinda forced me to stand for over 2 hours. I didn't witness the save at the time for some reasons only to see Roman Torres scoring the Cup-winning penalty goal at the end. I wasn't in BMO Field during the 2017 Final but was at the official watch party not far away from the stadium and had a great time with TFC winning the treble and everything.
it took me a month and a half to finally watch this, i'm gonna cry. thenk christ we got our cup the next year because i woulsd still be pissed about this game
Another great Sounders vid ya could do would be about Kasey Keller's 2011 MLS Save of the Year; the quadruple save in his final regular season home game. Simply phenomenal goalkeeping from a Seattle legend.
It's also good to remember that Seattle broke the tie in the 2019 cup final by winning 3-1 in front of 69,000 home fans. Seriously though, how impressive is it that SSFC and TFC have played each other 3 times in the final? Dynasties in their own rites.
Can we get a rewinder for Flyers vs Bruin 2010 ECSF, Flyers become 3rd team in NHL history to come back from 0-3 series deficit to win it in 7, series had amazing classic moments, Bruins game 1 OT win, Gagne coming back from foot surgery to score in game 4 OT, Flyers shared shutout in game 5, Flyers coming back from down 0-3 in the first period of game 7 to win it 4-3, historic series with so many classic moments
I hope to see rewinder stuff on the Columbus Crew. Maybe the big saves that Zack Steffen had against Atlanta during the 2017 playoffs after the team was revealed to be potentially moving. Or maybe that 3rd goal from Lucas Zelaryan during the 2020 Cup Final. Heck, maybe even the Frankie Hejduk goal in the 2008 final.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s short corner vs Barca in the Champions League Semifinal. It was a crafty and electric play, an incredible comeback, a power shift in European Football, a turning point in Klopp’s legacy, a turning point and in Messi’s legacy, in Barcelona’s legacy, you have former Liverpool players who jumped ship getting their comeuppance, a teenager and a journeyman end up being the heroes over perennial champion players, and there’s even video of Shakira watching it and freaking out… you gotta
Rip to the hundreds of pro soccer players who had heart attacks and dropped dead or can never play again, including the two opposing goalies who both had one during the same game. I mean, what are the odds?
You guys should do a Rewinder for the 1999 Champions League Final. Two teams on the verge of a European treble, unlikely players stepping up, and a memorable comeback. Would definitely be a fantastic watch!
There is so much room for this format to expand beyond traditionnal american sports. My best candidate: The Brighton Miracle, the Rugby World Cup opener between South Africa and Japan in 2015. For certain the biggest upset in rugby History, and one of the biggest in sports History period, in a sport where upsets aren't supposed to happen. Topped with one of the greatest displays of captainship ever and a deciding play in overtime. You can't get better than that.
Huge football fan (I guess soccer for americans) but have never followed MLS that much (just watch the teams loose against Liga MX teams in the Concacaf Champions league finals lol) but this was a great video where you can see the versatility of the MLS and a great moment of it
Love your videos. First one I've ever seen that I watched live. Great work, but you left out the best angle of The Save, fingertips from the goal line. Look up other videos to see how amazing The Save really was. But if the cross was an inch lower, it was probably a goal.
I remember stressing the entire game, hoping my Sounders can pull of the win. I remember when I saw Frei make that save. I told everyone watching “we’re going to win” and I remember my sister asking why I thought that. And I just said “because our goalkeeper is in the zone”
A part you missed in this story is Roman Torres. He was basically the MVP of Seattle that game outside of Frei. He was stepping up in a big way when no one else was and he was a large reason as to why Toronto had yet to score. It was only fitting that he was the one to score the winning goal
Wow, 2016 was a heck of a year in sports! You have this story here with Seattle winning. Also, in that same year we were treated to 2 of the biggest underdog stories of All Time!... Leicester, a literal 5000-to-1 shot, ended up Winning the Premier League! And possibly the greatest underdogs in Americsn Sports History, The Chicago Cubs, FINALLY Won The World Series! Great year for sports!
Still remember that Cheyrou goal against Montréal, because some of us in Marseille really believed he could still be a starter in midfield if he hadn't left the way he did, two years earlier
If Rewinder is still a thing in the next Olympics cycle, some fun moments to consider would be the 2018 Men's Curling final (the US overcomes a 2-3 start to make the final, scoring 5 in an end to beat Sweden) or the 2002 Men's 1000 meter short track speed skating final (Steven Bradbury hangs back to watch the top competitors take each other out to win).
I’m a Toronto FC fan and I was sitting at the opposite end of the stadium. When I saw that save in the distance, all I could say was “wow, that was an amazing save” in a defeated, monotone voice.

I was at the game in the Sounders’ supporter section. Frozen, hoarse from screaming, and not hopeful we’d win. That save was incredible and our section (right on that goal line) saw the play unfold. I though we were done… until we weren’t!
I always watch the soccer videos you put out. There’s so many good moments you could do
The F1 season just finished, I hope we get a rewinder ep about the Abu Dhabi GP next year before the new F1 season starts
Loved this one! I don't really follow MLS, so it was fun going in not knowing the result (though the thumbnail kinda gave it away)
I'd like to see one on the 2007 MLS cup, when Houston Dynamo went Back-to-Back against New England Revolution. Great video, thanks as always.
Also the 2006 Cup
We need some more motorsport content here, especially for Rewinder. May I suggest “Is that Glock?”
What a video! Football has so much intensity and emotion packed into.
MLS video on Secret Base!!! I love it
it took me a month and a half to finally watch this, i'm gonna cry. thenk christ we got our cup the next year because i woulsd still be pissed about this game
Another great Sounders vid ya could do would be about Kasey Keller's 2011 MLS Save of the Year; the quadruple save in his final regular season home game. Simply phenomenal goalkeeping from a Seattle legend.
If you feel bad for TFC, just remember that TFC got their revenge on Seattle the next year with a 2-0 victory.
It's also good to remember that Seattle broke the tie in the 2019 cup final by winning 3-1 in front of 69,000 home fans.
Seriously though, how impressive is it that SSFC and TFC have played each other 3 times in the final? Dynasties in their own rites.
Do a rewind on Jozy Altidores 2017 winning final goal! Would be a great sequel.
Nice seeing secret base cover MLS. I hope they do more in the future. Maybe cover 2020 western conference comeback between Minnesota and Seattle
I LOVE Secret Base nation! They're so good.
Magnificent storytelling!
Rip to the hundreds of pro soccer players who had heart attacks and dropped dead or can never play again, including the two opposing goalies who both had one during the same game. I mean, what are the odds?
Incredible story well told.
My favorite series on UA-cam
Well done! Bravo! Thank you for this! Great job! Keep up the good work.
Jerzy Dudek 'Spaghetti Legs' save in penalty shootout of Champions League Final 2005 deserves a Rewinder
Huge football fan (I guess soccer for americans) but have never followed MLS that much (just watch the teams loose against Liga MX teams in the Concacaf Champions league finals lol) but this was a great video where you can see the versatility of the MLS and a great moment of it
If there is one moment in football history that definitely needs a rewinder episode is the 1986 WC semis between Argentina and England. No doubt.
A “Rewinder” on Renteria’s walk-off single in Game 7 of the ‘97 World Series would be a delicious addition.
Love your videos. First one I've ever seen that I watched live. Great work, but you left out the best angle of The Save, fingertips from the goal line. Look up other videos to see how amazing The Save really was. But if the cross was an inch lower, it was probably a goal.
I've never watched mls so I didn't know how this ended, I was really surprised!
Let’s go! Love the MLS videos
Also Cleveland's title drought ended...
Deyverson's goal for Palmeiras against Flamengo in the 2021 Copa Libertadores Final deserves a rewind in 4 to 5 years from now
some MLS action damn !! thanks for the awesome video !!
Still remember that Cheyrou goal against Montréal, because some of us in Marseille really believed he could still be a starter in midfield if he hadn't left the way he did, two years earlier
Thank you for this amazing content!!
I friggin' love these rewind videos lol
