    Hi would just like to congratulate you on the video's you produce Dave, they are well thought out, very well presented with your fun and enthusiasm, and extremely informative - big respect from England

      EEVblog That's very uncharacteristic of a UA-cam comment... A compliment. LOL :) Usually someone pisses and moans about something you did wrong, or makes a crappy comment about a thing they can't do better with. It's refreshing to see that the electronics enthusiast community is well mannered. :)

      Yeah, I like Dave's videos too. Not much shittalk, straight to the point, I like it, there's tonns of other people making videos, where only about 30% at most is about topic itself, most people problem is that they talking about what they gona be talking about... So, big thumbs up for Dave =)

    So I'm guessing the meeting went something like this:
    Exec: "We are turning a new leaf at this company with me in charge, and how better to represent that than to change our name?"
    Marketing: "But sir, we have the best brand image in the industry. "Agilent" always ranks highest in surveys regarding recognition and expectation of quality."
    Exec: "But I'm in charge now. All that is in the past. Now is the future. I'll call the company.....Keysight! Like, a key, and a sight. That you see signals with and unlock their meaning. It's BRILLIANT."
    *Everyone in the room stops listening*
    Exec: "And the logo, oh the LOGO! Aspects of a key lock and a waveform combined. The old logo was blue, mine will be red! Someone is taking notes on all this, right?"

    Fastest scope teardown ever ;) That NEC chip seems to be the USB2.0 hub (µPD720110). Seems they need an additional USB channel for the touch.

      If you search eBay for "hdmi touchscreen 2av" you'll get heaps of touch screen modules. They all have eGalax touch screen controllers with a usb interface. Linux supports them out of the box. Apparently very cheap and common.

    • @gglovato
      @gglovato 9 років тому

      yep, without even checking the part i knew it was a usb hub as well (you can see the traces from the host port going to it, the dev port probably goes straight to the arm cpu), in the end, implementing a touch screen to an existing design via usb controller(off the shelf part even) is the simplest most cheapest way, even more when your design already has a usb port and some suitable blank space in the board.
      can't fault them for that, not elegant?, yeahp, looks like "milking the cash cow"(specially when they didn't bother fixing the high standby consumption)?, yeahp again, they couldn't rsue the older boards thanks to that usb hub but you bet your bottom dollar they spent weeks trying to figure out how to milk the cow even more (they couldn't "plug it in" the existing usb port because that's already protruding the outside of the case heh)

    I prefer the name Agilent over Keysight.. Who's with me?

    • @tra757200
      @tra757200 9 років тому +6

      I prefer Hewlett Packard to any other name and as our 75th was coming up last year, I sent a request for us to repurchase them from Agilent as a birthday present and name it Hewlett Packard Instruments. As you can see, they didn't take my advice.

    • @HamishMilne83
      @HamishMilne83 9 років тому +2

      For sure. Agilent is a good solid brand. Why change away from it? I don't see any need to 'refresh' their image, nor can I tell what obscure sector of the market they're trying to break into where Keysight is a more effective name. I'd be interested to see what their reasons are... but until then I'm putting it down to marketing wank.

    • @HamishMilne83
      @HamishMilne83 9 років тому +1

      Well, the business folks see the popularity of iDevices, the emergence of more mobile platforms, the sheer strength of their market penetration - and of course, how insanely profitable they are - and attempt to make existing systems more like them. Because that will obviously make them better.
      Fortunately, I think that's not going to last too long when the backlash happens, which it very much did for Windows 8 and Skype. The latter I haven't heard anything about, but if you get a chance you should check out the Windows 10 preview. I'm running it right now, and haven't had any problems; it's like Win7 but nicer looking, faster, a few UI improvements etc. Though it's basically a reskin of 8 so a bunch of stuff doesn't run on it. Metro crap is gone.
      The Quartus thing is just Altera being dicks. They know full well that people need to work on legacy equipment, or educational stuff (as in my case), but they want you to ditch that and buy the new stuff. It's an upsell, plain and simple.
      On an unrelated note.. I've seen a few pony avatars in these comments. And tesla500 is one of us of course. Might be worth exploring further..
      Better be careful though; the internet might struggle to take such a high autism concentration =P

      It will always be HP to us old timers.

    • @ediseverywhere
      @ediseverywhere 9 років тому +2

      Hamish Milne Agilent acquired many life science and health businesses over the years and got reclassified as being in the healthcare sector. Those investors were quite unhappy with having this big sector of the company being in a cyclical market, so HP's instrument division got spun off and lost its name again.
      ...so, not marketing wank, but financing wank.

  • @nheng6913

    Interesting that your sample has the same supply (like the 2000A and 3000A) that has blown up on a number of people. And with the years that have passed here, Keysight will no longer sell you a replacement. I believe my later build has a different brand but need to confirm that. This "quality" supply had serious overheating and design issues. It baked off the main capacitor causing the system to collapse (blown mosfet, blown protective device, blown diodes, burnt PCB). Maybe an update to this video could shame Keysight into selling replacement parts again (for critical assemblies, hardware, aesthetics, etc.)

    Problem with capacitive touchscreen drivers is it is really hard to get them for smaller series like medical devices or lab equipment. Companies like EETI do only give away these ready to use boards.

    Is there a way to sort comments by date or is that hidden?
    My question:
    You trip over your scope probe and snap off the BNC
    Now what? Looks like an area where amateur attempts will mess up the tuning of the input area, not uncommon, especially if you have a forest of rf loads etc on the connector.

    4:30 whoa hey i wouldn't say dissappointing... the monitor and the touchscreen are input devices, they have their own hardware :| You're not miffed the display is not designed and/or manufactured by Keysight, I wouldn't consider the touchscreen any differently :/ Ok yeah it looks a bit weird to have a PCB in there with a different logo, but that's the same with the power supply, no?

  • @mattbeddw

  • @Razor2048

    In order to better differentiate their products, why don't they just add a Dual 12 core Intel Xeon CPU's to run the OS, and a 1TB SSD, and have it dual boot windows 7 as well as an OS dedicated to the oscilloscope functions. They can then add triple SLI GTX 980's so that when not probing stuff, you can do some 4K gaming with maxed out settings. For their pricing, they will still make a massive profit.

    • @pvc988
      @pvc988 9 років тому

      Jaroslaw Pelczar But they really could use some faster CPU. 1m12s to boot is just too long. My PC boots faster than that.

      Isn't thats what Tek did in some of their Logic Analyzers? My confidence dropped by ten fold when that WindowsXP splash screen popped up on something I should have had high confidence in! Of course they should/could be running Linux, which a lot of gear does run today, especially networking equipment.

    • @pvc988
      @pvc988 9 років тому

      Jaroslaw Pelczar That would be good compromise, I think. No hardware changes needed and resuming would be almost instant as long as the device is plugged in.

    • @code123ns

      Tim Rotunda They couldn't go for Linux because for Linux you need NumLock and Scroll Lock LEDs. These are needed to indicate when the Kernel starts to panic.

    • @pvc988
      @pvc988 9 років тому +2

      code123ns Linux doesn't even need a keyboard. It is so flexible that you could run it on a bottle of beer if it had a CPU and some memory.

It's just called a connector here, Dave. You don't need to specify it's Earth when you are on Earth. It's like ordering Canadian bacon on your pizza when in Toronto.
