This video came at the perfect time - great to know that other artists feel the same way.

"I've met comic book artists who draw a lot and hate it"
It's like he's speaking directly to me, I say as I begrudgingly work on a comic page

Thanks Stephen. Maybe we all love having created something but through that we sometimes aren't in love with the process. Maybe we all love having a finished product. Thanks again.

+BAwesomeDesign yes. i definitely know that artist focus on the details and finish more than the process to get there effectively.

Thanks Stephen! This is the talk I needed, cause I think the exact same thing about the whole "gotta draw my ass off all day to get better", that drawing all the time doesn't realy do much for you if you don't realy KNOW what you are actualy doing. I'm a bit afraid of "learning wrong", and if I lunge myself into extreme practice I'll end up hating this.

That describes my feelings on drawing so well. Anything beyond a very short animation drives me up the wall. ADD is a strong possibility for me, but I've never be diagnosed.

hey Stephen thanks for this! I think it's good to push ourselves to learn, but if something is really so so so much against our interests and passions and is purely a pain, like you said you have no interest in composing backgrounds and all that, then yeah we just should listen to ourselves and make it work for ourselves in a natural way. I often battle myself mentally, telling myself I have to learn everything and not be so lazy and all that... hard to find balance with all these ideas and improving and all that. Anyways thanks as always!

Ha! Preach Steven. At least now I know I'm not crazy. Looking back now I think I missed out on a career in animation for this very same misconception. Ahwel. Live and learn right.

Boom! This one hit me so hard..I always put pressure on myself that I SHOULD DRAW everyday because of the fear I can't be good enough. Nothing wrong on it though...but if it becomes frustrating and dragging the life out of you...it just sucks! Thank you for this one! More power to you and God bless you and your family!

You have no idea how much I needed this right now. I'm practicing all hours I'm not in my office job trying to get good but it's stressing me out at the moment and I don't think I'm drawing effectively. Maybe I need a break!

I am glad you brought this up Stephen! I have heard people talk about how they have to draw everyday for hours on end and give that as advice. I know for myself I can't draw all the time I need to take a break from it in order to revitalize my creativity. I think that's why a lot of artists procrastinate on their projects because they believe that they need to get it done in a short deadline or need to be great artist right now. Then they get burnt out or overwhelmed by it. Good things take time. Like I am creating an Art Book of my drawings that I started back in October 2015. My goal was to get at least 20 pages. I am up to 16 right now. I am not in a rush to finish it but I am enjoying what I am drawing because each one is getting better and I am enjoying what I am drawing. Plus if you think about it, if your drawing every hour of the day, how are you able to go out and land new clients each day? Keep these up Stephen!

Stephen, I have to totally agree with this concept... I thought I wanted to be an Illustrator of children's books. After art school I did not pursue that as I have landed an art job internship in my last semester and ended up designing point of purchase displays and graphic design for the next 12 yrs. I always was doing some other type of art on the side. Both for fun or profit such as sign painting, windows, boats, trucks. I dabbled in tattooing, scrimshaw, portraiture, logo design and more. I have done a couple of illustration jobs through out the years and quickly found out I did not enjoy having every little thing orchestrated in the process. I found that I work best if we can agree on an idea and then give me pretty much full artistic license. this is where my best work is turned out. I started doing caricatures about 9 yrs. ago with no instruction at all. I got tired of working for other people and jumped in with both feet. I set a goal to work on Navy Pier in Chicago and got that job and learned on the job. I have met you at one of the ISCA conventions and I love watching your talks. I keep debating to take the schoolism course but I am not a character designer nor do I want to be this late in the game ( I am older than you :) ) I am now a caricature artist and also do pet caricatures and have been for he last 9 years when I took a risk and went for it. I can not draw all the time, I want to but I get to where it is just too much and that is all I do,,,I do a lot of commissioned caricatures as well as gigs....anyway enough of that. Anyone can do anything they want if they set there mind to it and work hard to get there. Sometimes are dreams may not turn out to be what they seemed in the begging and you may end up someplace else. The road less traveled eh? Hope to see you again sometimes. I would love to hear your take on the schoolism just to improve my skills further..Wish I lived near I would go to the workshops! Thanks for all you do Stephen Deb Donnelly in Chicago

You can't imagine how much this help me to hear this; I'm also almost sure I have ADD (did part of the tests, just need to see a doctor) and I have a lot of trouble to keep my head on only one things. I do love to draw but I constantly feel bad that I don't want to draw ENOUGH compared what I hear most professionals do. I just feel there are so many interesting things to do. So thank you ,because I was feeling like a pretty terrible illustrator but I know see it is not just me.

This is really relatable I work in fashion design and ever since I started doing digital art full time I can't look at a screen and draw at home digitally, so I've been changing up my medium and also doing more diy creative stuff but drawing at home feels like work

I love drawing comics and drawing the whole scenes and characters even though I did animation at uni I still find it a bit painstaking and don't really have patience for it, now when I do I do in really small bits as to not overwhelm myself.

HAH! I knew it ! Every time I heard that the way to go was to draw all the time I'd go psht. Sorry I can't. I need time to observe, to experience, to feel, to live life, and that's what in turn makes your art alive. I just cannot have my nose in my sketchbook constantly, or sit in front of the computer all the time. It's a hermit's life. As artists, we translate into images what we see, what we feel, we tell stories that are about the human experience. We gotta have those FIRST to be able to make art that breathes, that people can relate to. Your art actually gets better, on an emotional level, if you get out of your cave :)
Thank you for that Stephen. I know rigorous practice definitely has its place to improve, but if you rely only on the technical, something will be missing. In your art, and your own life too. Yolo :P

Personally I've found it best to practice for as long as you meet two criteria:
1)You are practicing deliberately. You understand what you are practicing and have at least some idea of how you to practice it.
2)You are practicing attentively. Once your attention begins to wain the quality of your practice drops dramatically and you are better of doing other things.
Learning to force yourself to draw is a great skill to have when you have adequate base skills and are working professionally. You have to be able produce and meet deadline.
This is ultimately an unhelpful mindset when you're trying to grow because:
1)If you're practicing in a forced manner you're less observant.
2)You're going to destroy your motivation over time. Granted you mentioned burnout in the video, but that's only part of the picture. Burnout will cause you stop drawing, at least for awhile, but personal motivation is more important in the sense that is what will keep you practicing for years and overtime build greater discipline. Discipline will overtime allow you to increasing improve the quality and quantity of your practice and professional work.

Good to know that there are people who value 'small art' and not only 'blizzard and magic cards' epic uber art :' ).
I often feel a bit guilty that I'm not aiming towards creating those epic scenes, 40 hours paintings, but I absolutely find no joy in such things!
(I'd love to learn how to construct them, but rendering... leeeets leave it to more passionate people ;' ) )

+Dranka do what you love in art, thats the way you keep yourself hungry. Its always fun to start something new. Longer drawings you can spread over a time while you do some shorter works in between. That wil keep you fresh for the long drawings and you can work further on them when you have te good feeling for it. Sometimes i work further on a specific drawing that i didn't touch in weeks, beceause i was stuck with it, or didnt feel good about it. But i did other drawings and sometimes after not touching that piece and you see it again you get that moment you say to yourself 'i can push that a little bit more or you see a mistake and correct it, and before you know it you work further on that long drawing. Do it in steps.

+Tedworth Yep you'r wright. I was a sports fanatic to in my younger days. I did everything from running, cycling, power lifting, boxing, climbing, MTB etc... cycling even intens for 6 years and riding hours a day on my cycle, in weekends almost a whole day with a group. And now, pfffff. I still do sports but if i do not have the feeling for it, i do it on another day, and not that manny hours anymore. You burn yourself up. My advice in sports, drawing and other things, do it but dont over due it, keep yourself hungry and that will be better in the long run.

I know what you mean. I recently took up a challenge to draw every day of the year but lately I've realized that I've been rushing through the drawings just to get them over with. Next year I'm going to try and work on weekly or monthly illustrations so that way I get quality over quantity. I also feel like my sketchbook has gotten less creative since I took up the challenge and I feel as if my sketchbook needs to be more random and energetic.

Milt Khal was such an awesome, awesome, artist! I *need* to learn more about the 9 old men.... pfffff.... anyway! I totally agree with you... personally I've always been drawing when inspired, when the mood and times felt right, since a few years I'm making drawings for work... and yeaaah it's not the same thing AT ALL, specially when your boss is rushing you to finish something, the end result it's simply awful.
Another time a person told me that I should MAKE inspiration happen, in some level that is true, but at the end it felt like I was forcing myself to draw and nothing good (to my point of view) came out from it.
Also: I've tried several times to draw something each day (like making an art challenge) and I've also failed miserably xD right now... I'm thinking on applying what you said and instead of forcing myself to draw a certain theme, just... sketch... things, let my mind free.
Thanks for this Steven! Sorry for the long comment xD

It's interesting you mentioned you might have ADHD, and how it has possibly shaped your career. I've always thought that animators must have a touch of OCD to be able to do the same thing over and over again.

This is my favourite talk of yours :) You probably don't do requests, but i'd love to hear you speak about my problem... I think I can draw faces at different angles, and I can draw emotion on faces that are 'straight on' but I can't put any emotion on the faces I draw at different angles :( they all just look so dull and have no flair, what would you say to this?
