Good info on using PS for the stencil but Cricut in the title is what made me stay thru the video. I'd like to see this those steps. It's not a waste of time to watch the cricut setup and some weeding if necessary
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video and thanks for the feedback. I use the cricut for most of my stencil making as it is easy and a huge time saver but skip over it in most of my videos. I'll take note of that and make a video that focuses on the cutting and weeding part of the video

Doing a lap of honour here mate👍 Just replicated a 6 layer. version on Gimp. Except for the artistic gallery called cut out as can find equivalent in Gimp. Now I have to try and do the layer clean ups and bridges. Should keep me busy till Christmas.😂
Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Truth be told creating bridges is one of the parts that takes me the longest and I have not found any shortcuts to help with this part yet. As soon as I do I'll be sure to make a video about it.
Thanks for the video. I remember watching another video of yours last year where you showed how to use a cricut to create stencils. I was considering shifting from cutting by hand to machine and this changed how I produce stencils entirely. Thanks for sharing your stuff !
Glad the videos helped you out. Switching to machine can be a game changer, for me I don't really have time to cut high detail stencils and it also saves my fingers for work where I need them. I will always have an appreciation for hand cut stencils though.
Just getting into stencils and this is a great tutoriol!! Thanks gor uplading it and walking people through the steps!! What version of photoshop do i need to have to use this method??
The method shown in this video works on any version of photoshop. If you look at my newer videos where I use scripts or plugins then you need the latest version.
That's the same machine I used for this, you will need a longer matt. I find the green standard grip is best for getting lots of detail and a fresh sharp blade. Actually you cannot cut A3 as the machine will not cut all the way to the edge of the matt for some reason so I just set the width to 29.2 cm for each piece of the stencil and it worked fine.
I used a Cricut in this video and lots of my other videos, it is good and gets great detail but the maximum cutting size is A3. I haven't tried a Silhouette yet but hoping to soon so I can compare them.
Thanks mate! For this video I tried MTN 94 as it had the largest range of grey tones and I also got a good deal on them. In other videos I've also tried Loop and Ironlak both of which are also really good but it just depends what you can find near you that isn't too expensive.
I love the video! I’m wondering if I can achieve the same results using the IPad app? It doesn’t seem to have nearly 1/2 of the settings you went through.. would you happen to have a similar tutorial using ipad? thanks again!
Thanks! I'm glad the video was helpful. I wasn't even aware that there was a photoshop ipad app but if it doesn't have the same settings then I don't think it would be possible. I'd have to take a look.
@@WickedPaint in 2020 my grandson was murdered coming home from 🏈 practice... he was a good kid everyone loved him. He was a die hard patriots fan. I have the pert spot in my home for one. So how do go about this please and thank you.
The machine is called a cricut explore air 2, its really good for cutting stencils but can only do A3. Thats why in this video I used 4 A3 pieces taped together to make a large stencil for each layer.
The largest desktop machine I know of the cameo pro cuts 24" max so you would have to split the stencil like i did in this video and tape them together afterwards which is really a pain. If you want to go bigger then you would have to look at a sign cutting plotter machines.
I like to use a hair-dryer to dry each layer of paint so you don't have to wait so long. It still takes at least a couple of minutes before I can do the next layer. One trick is to put down thin layers of paint so it dries faster.
Thank you, I always have my cricut set to custom on the material dial and select from the material list in the software. There are heaps of different paper settings but the one I use for stencils is the medium cardstock 216gsm and I get 220 gsm paper from my local office store. Cuts like butter every time and also gets great detail!
The one I show in this video is the hardest and takes the most amount of time but gets you the most realistic result. If your starting out then I would recomend looking at trying inkscape first or my latest photoshop stencil video both are much easier to get started.
Bonjour super travail félicitations , pour ma part je cherche une machine pour créer des pochoirs A2 ou A3 ci possible que me conseillez vous comme machine et comme matière à découper .Merci .... Bien Cordialement
Great video. I dabble with stencil art, just for fun at home. very amateur stuff, 2 layers. I make my stencils out of cereal boxes flattened out and covered with sellotape to keep it together. What is the stencil you use called?
Hey Mac, glad you enjoyed the video and its always awesome to know the videos are helping other artists. I am planning a 3 and 5 layer stencil video in photoshop as I have discovered some easy methods to help out the beginners. Stick around and you won't be an amature for very long mate! I usually just use thick card 220gsm for my stencils as the waste can be recycled and its plenty strong enough to last a few artworks.
Thanks mate, its great to see this video helping out so many people get their stencils to the next level. The Photoshop I was using in this video was the CC 2020 version.
Very interesting video, well explained. Rather than using paper, wouldn't a low tack film such as transfer film been a better option, rather than having nuts and bolts to hold the paper down ?
Thank you, glad to hear you liked the video. Yes using a low tack film is a great alternative as there are lots available for the Cricut. Due to the size of this stencil I wanted something thicker like card so it would have more integrity when I moved it around and wouldn't stick to itself before I put it down. If I had someone helping me then spray adhesive would have been a good option too but the benefit to using nuts and bolts is you can move things around to line them up perfectly.
I'm just using some random stuff I have to the tool box I don't have any other use for. Old Bolts, nuts, washers, wheel balancing weights and any other random stuff that holds the weight down. I also use a chopstick to hold down some small areas so that they don't move while I paint.
I might consider selling some of the stencils used in the videos but right now I don't have any time to start a cutting service. It is a great idea though and might be a possibility if I upgrade to laser cutting stencils.
If you plan to make alot of stencils and sell some art then getting a machine is worth while. The cricut machine is good but the silhouette can cut larger stencils so take a look and find something in your budget.
Had a go at cutting this but think it was way too small only 9” x 14”. At this size the bridges tore out and the Cricut stylus also created tear outs. I have a canvas doing nothing and measures 24”x18” can I use that?
Well done! great job! can you please tell me which shade guide you used? I know that brand but there are many types of gray, black and white but I don't know which ones would be better to use ...
Thanks Mate. Glad the video helped you out. In terms of shade guides its best to use the color chart provided by the paint manufacturer so that way you can match the color of paint to the greys in photoshop. In this video I used MTN 94 because they seem to have the largest range of greys and it was also easy for me to find locally.
Beauty work realy , but I have a problem with the first step. I have a photo 6000x4000 and after the cutout I have a splashy photo . could you help me with that why is this happening? thanks you
Glad you like the video and its helping you out. That sounds like a really big image with lots of detail so you should not have nay issues but if you are then check the dpi. If it is 72dpi then change it to 300dpi and you should get a better result otherwise try changing the settings in the cutout tool to see if it gets better. Thanks
I using 220gsm paper for most of my stencils as its thick enough to use multiple times. It doesn't wet and swell because spray paint comes out in light layers and dries fast. You can also use other materials like mylar if you want stencils that last forever but I prefer materials that can be recycled due to the waste in making stencils.
Superb! This method produces better results (imho) than using G'MIC's Cutout and Color to Layers filters. I also appreciate that you use regular materials and not some new carbon-fiber/transparent aluminum frisket film that's overpriced and unavailable :)
Thanks Michael. As much as I try to find easier ways to do things to make them beginner friendly or speed up the process by showing G'mic or even the cutout filter. Great art takes time and you can't cheat that! I always try to stick to materials that are easily recycled so I don't feel so bad about the waste part of it. It may not last as long but that just means the art is limited and more valuable.
@@WickedPaint I've always felt it's that extra effort/love in the painstaking parts that make a piece special. Thank you for showing us how to do this 😀

I use a Cricut Explore Air 2 which is pretty good and gets some nice detail but the largest size you can cut is A3. If you want to go a bit bigger then that then the Silhouette Cameo 4 Pro might be a better option or if you have a larger budget then a laser cutter would be the best! Great video, thank you. I'm wondering if you can help me out. I've tried on multiple platforms to create multi layer stencils & have been able to but when I export & save them & upload to cricut they don't line up for some reason. I can get 2 out of 4 or 3 out of 7 but can't actually paint because they don't line up. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks glad you enjoyed the video. To get the stencils to line up make sure you put a plus "+" marker in each corner thats outside your artwork. It will serve two purposes, the first one is to line up each layer when you paint and the second is you can use the dimensions of the markers to make sure you cut each layer the same size so they line up. Hope that made sense and if you need more help feel free to ask.
I've had to add a grey colour as the paint set has 6 colours. This includes the black and 5 greys, but there are 8 stencils the last one number 8 is white so what colour of grey is missing from the description?
Yeah you should be able to, the filter gallery is not that important as we just use it as a guide anyway to set the threshold settings which you'll have in 2017. For the filter gallery you can just screenshot my settings and use that as a guide if you even need it.
I have a guitar project Ive been working on. It seems much simpler than this but I'm having trouble figuring out how to proceed with the stencil layout. Any way I can contact you with an image and get your opinion?
Thats a great question. Including the Photoshop prep and cutting I would say 40 hours roughly to make all the stencils. If you painted 10 of them I would say you would want to sell them for at least $250 each to cover the time and materials. For a painting this size that is reasonable here in Australia and could even get more if sold to the right market.
Incredible I’m doing this right now but with three layers black grey and white and I’m hand cutting the stencils cause my laptop won’t update my Cricut app.
Glad you found my video and I hope it helps you out. Thats the one thing that really pisses me off about the Cricut- constant updates and the fact the software won't run without an internet connect. But the machine itself works really well for stuff like this.
Only having Gimp on a Mac, following along ain’t easy. Trying to find a Gimp filter gallery to see what 8 layers will look like for one. But I will carry on until I crack it. Of course some Aussie genius help would be much appreciated😉
I'm trying to follow what your saying step by step. Unfortunately I you say something then click the keyboard & it's done. When talking about removing the backround it goes so fast & you cant see what you are doing. Any suggestions?? I've watched the video a 100 times.
Thanks for reminding me and yeah you are right, this channel would never be complete without a painting of spiderman! For this video I decided this image would be better for the realistic result I wanted to show.
Sorry, I have filmed that in other videos. All you need to do is import the png files for each layer and then set the dimensions in the cricut cutting space. I didn't film it for this stencil because I cut each layer into 4 so I could make it much larger but it became really complicated.
Warum überhaupt mit Farbe sprühen ? Ein Bild kann doch bearbeitet und gedruckt werden ,so wie sie es wollen ,ohne einzelne Foilen zu benutzen . Selbst das Original ist hier bearbeitet .
For my stencils I like to use 220gsm card stock as its easy enough for the cricut to cut and get lots of detail but is also thick enough to not fall apart when you spray paint all over it.

Do you need to create "branches" or bridges if you cut on a lazer machine ?
Yes you always need to create bridges regardless of how you cut or the important details of the stencils get lost

I haven't tried gimp personally but inkscape is another good option. I haven't managed to get this much detail out of it but maybe it is possible.

Can this same process be applied in Photoshop 2017? You lost me at the "Filter Gallery" step due to it not being a clickable option in my program.
Yeah sure, send me an email-wickedpaintairbrush@gmail.com
6 stencils x how many hours ? How many prints will you make at what price ? Beautiful work but very time consuming.😊
@@WickedPaint it did help a lot. love your videos stay creative.
MAYBE colour order should be yellow , then green , red , blue , and finally black since white is already present ?
Yeah your right the artwork could use more colour and that would be great to try. I might also add these colours to the background too.
first of all, thanks for the video, but you did promes me to make a video to make multi layer stencels by coulors to make for examble Spider-man
Thanks for reminding me and yeah you are right, this channel would never be complete without a painting of spiderman! For this video I decided this image would be better for the realistic result I wanted to show.
Spiderman is done, check my new video!
Wouldn't a red , a yellow , a blue , a green , and a blackscreen be good enough ? , .
How many stencil and spray paints lol
You literally skipped the part i needed to see. The part where you export the images into cricut. Im having difficulties with that.
What paper do you use on your cricut
For my stencils I like to use 220gsm card stock as its easy enough for the cricut to cut and get lots of detail but is also thick enough to not fall apart when you spray paint all over it.
