I was first diagnosed with stage 5 CKD (eGFR = 3) two and a half years ago, and near death. My eGFR is now reading 20 (stage 4 CKD), and still improving modestly. And, so far, I have avoided the need for dialysis. What made this slow-motion improvement happen in my case was Diet, Exercise, BP control: - No salt - No sugar - No alcohol - No animal protein - losing weight (40 pounds in my case) - Keeping plant protein modestly low (between 50-70 grams per day for a 200 pound person) - Much more exercise (1,000+ miles per year bicycling, 5,000+ steps per day, 10+ flights of stairs per day, 20 minutes of weight lifting/calisthenics 3 times per week) - Keeping blood pressure below 130 - If I can muster the willpower, I can kick the eGFR up 2 to 3 points in a month by going to a super low protein diet, consisting mainly of fruit and rice (
