Thanks for that, Cheryl it’s been a while since I thought of composition I used to do lots of cruciform designs working to a focal point using shapes colour harmony and accents, then you get a year or two down the line and you can forget this design principle and just do your own thing, thanks to you I will go back to setting out my work write it down and select colours I will use and marks I will make and the composition bearing in mind lights and darks even the rule of thirds, as these methods are proven over many many years to be pleasing to the viewers eye so thank you for this refresher course xx
thank you for watching!! And for your incredible comment. I think value and differences in shapes make the most difference in by work personally. I wish you so much success in your painting.
I almost clicked off of your video because you didn't feel confident about your work to me. I stuck with it, and I LOVE your work. I love the variety, I think they are all executed and represent the compositional ideas powerfully. I also love that I sense that you are always questioning yourself to critique and improve. Bravo, you are a true artist. 👩🎨
I'm so pleased that I've 'discovered' you. Thank you for such a clear video - I now feel empowered! (Btw, the drawing of the resting woman at the end of the video was done by Matisse.)
Thank you Cheryl. Saw many videos of composition in theory but yours is the first one I saw compositions in the actual paintings. You showing it in your own painting has made it easy for me to understand. Thank you once again.
Thank you so much! Composition is an area that can really help us!! I find it helpful, but actually after the importance of value!!! Thank you so much for your comment
Such a useful video. Not only in helping to give direction to a painting you may be making but also in how to view and understand art works. I hope your insights will stay with me for some time. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Glad it was helpful! Composition is huge!!! If you are ever interested, i am doing a series of the elements of art under my membership currently. I did a 20 page one on composition one for September. I will be hitting on more composition and then value, etc. If you ever want to do a deeper dive.
Thanks for the composition types descriptions and examples. The three point or triangular looks like an Henri Matisse piece or a work done after Matisse. I've seen that exact composition and subject matter in his work.
Loved this ~ You’re such a great instructor/teacher. Sorry to hear about your mama 😢. I just lost my 101 year old grandad, then 3 weeks later I ended up in hospital discovering I had a rare aorta issue called fmd… fibro muscular dysphasia. I missed multiple videos of yours and missed your exit for 8 weeks; however, I’m glad we’re both back and onward with our purposes and honing in on them, as we continue our journey of growth
oh wow, take care of yourself Tiffiny!!! Health issues are so hard to deal with as they take forefront of our minds. I will certainly think of you my sweet friend. I am glad you are back watching and it is my hope you continue to heal.
Hi, Cheryl! Thanks for a really well-done explanation of different compositions. Your insight about muscle memory is valuable; I'm still learning and hoping that good compositions come intuitively for me, eventually. I'm saving this to watch again.
I have been doing some thinking about the muscle memory and the other aspect in our art that voice that is within each of us as artists and how it comes out when we let ourselves start to explore in our art.
Glad it was helpful! If you are up for more composition videos I have one with a 20 page tutorial under my Artisan Membership. If you are not ready for that commitment, it is so ok, but thought I would mention it. I will be going through many elements of abstracts in the next 5 months or so.
Hi Cheryl, Im so sorry about your mom...I lost mine too and my heart goes out to you. Nothing replaces that love. Thanks for all you share. I love coming to this inspirational, warm place:)❤🙏 it was so great to see your beautiful paintings!
I’m sorry you lost your mom too! I have a lot of her traits, and find I’m now closer to my dad! Thank you for visiting my channel and leaving a comment!
This is an area many artist struggle with!! Watch my last video Ashley for a tool I use and do to help me take the painting to a finish if I am uncertain!!
Hi Cheryl, this is a great video and your explanations with paintings that illustrate these compositions are much easier to understand than just looking at a diagram of compositions. The paintings are awesome, as usual. I was a little confused thinking that a piece should start with a specific composition in the diagrams. Personally, it's difficult for me paint that way, and go with the flow until something starts to happen during the process. Landscape is easier in that the composition seems to usually be horizontal.
I hoped it might help bring compositions into a relatable conversation!!! Remember, the usage of values and then the differences in the objects seems to help me the most in my abstracts
This was a very helpful video, thank you! I have a question. If you create intuitively, do you begin to push and edit the composition towards a specific direction at some point, like after adding beginning intuitive layers? Or do you continue intuitively all the way through and only notice the composition in the very final layers or after it's essentially finished?
Normally, I create and paint as I feel the painting taking me. It is as you say intuitive all the way and in the end stage, IF the painting is not working for me I go into composition mode and see what might change!!! There are days all the paintings work and days NOTHING works, I ride out those days. I do many layers normally, so I have to wait for things to dry many days!!
Glad you enjoyed it! I enjoyed making that one!!! thank you for your comment. You are so kind to be so supportive to me and my channel!!! You really need to subscribe my friend
It kind of seems like your balanced composition‘Emotional Conversation’ could be seen as a 3 point triangular composition: there’s the leaf shape over the writing on the left, and the darker markings to the right making a triangle. 🤔
Wonderful! I am enjoying new necklaces lately as they just make me do a tad more to get ready and that makes my dressing more "intentional" I bet your earrings are pretty!!
thought yr necklace was a good design element! outsize in shape and colour. got from nick wilton the principle of scale. either outsize and/ or minute is striking . guess imbalance! stop waffling robert. great stuff as always. best r
You are a true artist as you’re even looking at what I’m wearing, and talking about nicks principles of balance and bringing in a large object, and I absolutely love that!!!! I absolutely enjoyed your waffling Robert

Thank you Cheryl. Saw many videos of composition in theory but yours is the first one I saw compositions in the actual paintings. You showing it in your own painting has made it easy for me to understand. Thank you once again.
I am a visual learner and thought the more visual approach would explain it better, so happy it helped!! Thank you for sharing a comment
This is even better than watching people paint! Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful paintings and the teaching.
My pleasure 😊thank you so commenting, i appreciate it
Thank you, I learn so much from you. Showing real examples helps in such a wonderful way! I am sorry about your mother, I send a big hug.

Thank you so much, your necklace is gorgeous, I have some earrings that match the color.
