My dad’s cousin was married to John Wayne’s daughter. Jennifer Wayne, the granddaughter of John Wayne is a country music singer. She’s a member of Runaway June.
His last film role was in "The Shootist"(1976). He won his first and only Academy Award for playing Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit"(1969).He won for Best Actor.
John Wayne was my Grandma's very favorite, her hero, when I was little & would spend 2 weeks of summer vacation with her, she would never, ever miss anything he was in.
My granny loved him as well! All the kids would buy different Duke mementos over the years. She had one picture of him that was laminated onto a piece of wood. She hung it up in her living room and kept it until she passed, now my mom has it.
Great looking guy in his younger years. Very magnetic - look into his eyes. Big, big life, and now here he lies, quiet and still, beneath a plaque shoulder to shoulder with others that he probably didn't know.
Thanks Lamont for sharing this with us. I was a John Wayne fan I loved watching his movies. I didn’t know that he was buried in a common grave I always thought he was in a mausoleum.
Read about the movie, the Conqueror. It was filmed near a nuclear testing site and 220 set member developed cancer with 42 dying. John Wayne and Susan Hayward included
Dick Powell who directed the movie died of cancer. Agnes Moorhead ( Endora from Bewitched) also died from cancer. Lee Van Cleef was also in it. His cause of death has been listed as heart disease but he was also battling throat cancer. So yeah a lot of people were exposed to that radiation.
The army or those who flew planes took Clark Gable. He was not a spring chicken. There were other reasons why they didn't take John "Duke" Wayne. Duke, was his dog's name. His mentor was John Ford.
I believe the film was made not far from a area that dropped atomic weapons in the desert. The wind blew in the film’s direction and most of the actors developed cancer. I 15:27 watch a documentary years ago.
Great video. Interesting tidbit - although John Wayne was a large guy, he had disproportionately small feet. This is not uncommon with very large men. As a result, he had balance problems. His iconic swaggering walk was actually due to his balance issues.
Thank you for doing this one, Pilgrim! You are one for those of us who will never get to visit these places. Stay safe out there brother, and God bless!
Actually, John Wayne's final film was The Shootist (1976). Wayne had been diagnosed with stomach cancer and would pass away about three years later. Wayne was rather controversial at times, so his grave remained unmarked for nearly two decades, because his surviving family was afraid that his grave would be desecrated.
@@Rizzbulla Wayne was known for making patronizing remarks about blacks (and other POC). While it wasn't outright racism, Wayne did state during a Playboy interview that he didn't think blacks were ready to rule themselves. There was also controversy over his "refusal" to serve in the armed forces during WW2. Wayne was the father of four children at the time and his family might have suffered severe financial hardship if he were indeed KIA or went MIA. Thanks.
Hey Lamont! The last film role, which you described rather accurately, was The Shootist. True Grit was 1969 for which he won an Oscar. Keep up the great work my man!
The movie he played a "cancer stricken gunslinger" his last role, was The Shootist. The movie he played Rooster Cogburn, with the eyepatch was True Grit.
My lovely wife is buried at Pacific View Cemetery. I go there every week with fresh flowers and I do a prayer walk around the entire perimeter of the Cemetery. The girl who died tragically while speeding in a Porsche was Nikki Catsouras. I always pass Nikki's grave on my prayer walk. And very close to Nikki is the crypt of a famous actress that you didn't notice: Jeanne Carmen, Known as the queen of the B movies, a personal friend of Marilyn Monroe, a mistress of Frank Sinatra and Johnny Rosselli, and she was also a trick golfer.
These idiots in the comment are saying he was a great man he was a great man when he did that interview you called being a racist great who played himself making himself look pathetic he shows his true colors they need to wake up and see that
He is so revered in my family, that I have his last movie, still wrapped in plastic, never opened because no family member, past or present can bring ourselves to watch it. When he passed it was devastating! The Best... RIP JW.
The Shootist, such a great movie, i was born and raised and still live in Indiana Pa which is Jimmy Stewarts hometown. Jimmy is huge around here, his childhood home is like a museum and they have a separate museum that has Jimmys office exactly like it was in Hollywood and they have a bunch of props from his movies. John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart 2 of the best to ever act
That was a great movie. But, then again, every film he did with Maureen O'Hara was a winner. My absolute favorite is 'McClintock', I could watch that over and over. They seemed to have such a good chemistry together.
great video. His last movie I believe was the Shootist with Lauren Bacall and James Stewart. He also appeared as himself on a hilarious episode of 'Maude'.
My brother and I travelled from Antrim/Belfast in Northern Ireland just to visit the grave. Although at the time you had to hunt for it, as the family still insisted that the office staff should not point in which direction. However after begging the lady office worker and explaining how far we had travelled she didn't tell me the exact location , but did point me in the right direction. Whist approaching the grave, we had noticed a visitor, so we stood back. It was his daughter Marisa.. When she got into their car we slowly approached. Marisa waved. It was a day I cannot and will not forget. I am the fan and admirer. Why! Here's the thing about John Wayne being "too old" to join the military in WW2 (and it could be true becoz the max age to join was 34 and I think still is. Ex-military here 🤚) But Clark Gable enlisted and he was 6 years older than John Wayne. In fact he flew in 5 combat missions as a gunner on a B-17 before Hollywood "pulled the plug" on that. They didn't want "The King Of Hollywood" getting killed.
@@vicvega3614yes that's very true. Jimmy Stewart saw plenty of action in WW2. He was awarded several medals. And he was as big of a star as Gable was. I read that Gable was pulled from combat service because if he became a casualty of war then it would've stirred low morale during the war. It was even backed by FDR.

Most famous cowboy actor? I think that'd depend a little on the era but then John Wayne got an early start. So early that Wyatt Earp would talk to Wayne about Earp's old west, as Earp visited movie sets. Earp wanted to make sure the movies stayed close to the real wild west. Tom Mix was the first big cowboy actor. Then John Wayne. As TV shows started to be made it shifts to James Arness and the Bonanza show actors. There were lots of others known in the 1950s but none had the star or staying power of John Wayne.
