Just what we needed for realz. This kid has a football mind, instincts that can't be taught. I am good with him since Bucannon was taken by the Cardinals. I would have loved getting Bucannon to replace Whitner, but this was the next best pick for our d-backs. That's the one area on the team that needs the most help.

B Wino It's not apparent. He is. 90 tackles, 7 picks and 11 pass break-ups in a single season at safety? Yes, please. He and Reid should create a solid safety dandem for years, and he also has the ability to play nickel, making him a true free safety if they want to move him there.

This guy was a beast in college. Idk what he's doing now but he destroyed everybody at the level of college ball he was playing. He was actually recruited by Alabama.

At 5'8 184 lbs Joyner will need to play CB at the next level.
There is nothing on a football field joyner does better than Ward. That is why Mayock has him rated higher than him. If Ward were 6-3 and weighed 210 pounds he would be the first safety taken in this draft and a top 10 pick.
He isn't better than joyner. The year joyner played safety was even more impressive than his senior year

If you look at the depth chart as it stands right now, we're pretty stacked at WR. You've got 3 veterans who have all had 1000 yard seasons, a deep threat with great hands in Ellington, Patton who made some big plays last year and probably either Lloyd or Osgood. CB seemed like a good choice for the 1st rounder

Great pick up..I thought that a CB was top necessity, but Ward looks ready..He'll be a nickel coverage guy, as we already got Bethea and Reid back there..but he looks like a hitter, and thats what we lost with Whitner leaving..He might be a good special teams guy as well..Im excited, but we do need a CB still..WR is set now with Johnson

I think a lot of people were expecting a wide receiver, but that became less of a need when they traded for Stevie Johnson prior to the draft. They'll have Johnson, Boldin, Crabtree and Patton. Thats a solid receiving corp. I like Ward. He's a guy that can play all over the field. Can cover TEs and cover the run like a linebacker.
Completely agree! I hope Ward will be an upgrade over Carlos Rogers and is versatile enough to sub for Bethea if he goes down. Check out my video of the 49ers draft party and crowd reaction to Ward being picked.
@Joshua loher Elamite natural postion is SS and that's where we want to move him this year so FS is our biggest need for our entire team and Jimmie ward fits the bill perfectly .

dude is aggressive which will allow him to fit in with the niners culture. He can cover the slot and deep balls. Dude always attacks the ball..and he can tackle.

People here still complaining about not trading up to get a WR are so irrationally misguided. Ward is absolute diamond in the ruff who fills multiple secondary needs. Why would we give him, Hyde, and maybe Borland up to move up to the 13th spot to gamble with a rookie WR like OBJ? I'd rather have Stevie Johnson in his prime years and Ellington as added depth. At least Johnson can say he's had 3 seasons of 1,000+ yard production in a 6 year career. This draft crop of WRs will be fortunate to say that.

Niners got the sleeper of the 1st round, yall dont even realize how good this man actually is, i wanted the Bears to trade back up and get him so bad. I've been at NIU for 4 years and he's honestly been our best player (forget all the hype that Jordan Lynch had), this is the guy that was the true leader of our team. Niners just got a work horse and honestly I've seen him do some stuff that honestly reminds me of Ed Reed (first hand stuff, not on TV, in person plays that you haven't seen on a highlight reel)

The 9ers know what they're doing. They don't need a SS they have a great one in Antoine Bethea. Jimmie Ward is fast and is a really sticky cover guy, but isnt big enough to play safety. Instead the 9ers got themselves a sticky cover CB that can hit hard to boot......as you can see in the film. He's the next Dick The Night Train Lane.
He plays soft for a safety but hes coverage is the best almost unlike any other safety. IDK about hes hands.. but over really good safety ..good future
He has great hands what are you talking about? And soft? He led NIU in tackles the last two years. You clearly do not know what you are talking about. The only reasonable knock on him is his size.

49ers drafting this guy had to be the smartest move in the draft. You draft probably the most complete safety in the draft. He's a sleeper. In the 2nd round, y'all might go after a physical WR like Jarvis Landry or Cody Latimer provided they aren't gone.

Justa SportsWinner Yea but Ward was drafted because he has something roby does not and that is INSTINCTS. His read and react ability is top shelf. Ward was a shutdown slot corner while playing safety. Roby did nothing but get burned over and over. You cant teach instincts.
DB/S was the right choice here. We couldn't even field a team since our secondary is depleted. At least we can throw out a starting group of WRs. This draft is WR heavy, I'm sure we'll be drafting one. Don't be upset if the 9ers grab another DB since we aren't sure what will happen to Cully now. Don't kid yourself, this isn't the same #7 ranked pass defense from last year. Plus Aldon is probably suspended 8 games so that puts more pressure on our DBs.
+ we can let Dahl go now Ward can take his special teams spot as well.
Aldon might be 86ed..we also need an outside linebacker and a defensive tackle to prepare for Justin Smith leaving..Offense is not a concern at all in my opinion, unless there is a phenomenal guard or center available..
Ward is going to be a starter as a slot corner. His cover, ball hawking , and tackling skills are elite. They're probably grooming ward to be the future fs might have him play center field and let reid play ss cause reid will be more ideal against the run. And as far as kap I agree he needs to get better with his progressions and use his check down instead of running or getting sacked. But kap gives our offense the ability to go out and win games where Alex just didn't lose games. But it's going to be a slug fest in the NFC west. If any team slips I see it being the hawks they lost a chunk of their d line and didn't address their lack of an oline. Their stadium can only hide so many of their weakness.
I hope he plays CB instead of safety. I want Reid to continue improving and learning alongside Bathea. Although it'll take some time and adjustments, I think Ward can be a better corner than safety.

Niners don't need no WR, not in the first round anyways. The Niners have enough wrs, Bolden, crabs, vernon,and Patton, mix that with the running game that should be enough. Vernon has plenty speed use him. Niners just need better QB play this year mentally and physically.
Great player and dude's got some serious skills...my only concern...is his tackling 'low'...stop the vid at the :40 second mark..he has a clear shot on the QB and decides to go for the knees...that type of tackling, should it cause injury, worries me going forward...otherwise, I'm excited to see what this dude can do in the NFL!

The defense, just got better. Plenty of wide receivers in day two and three. With the picks the Niners have, they could get two speedsters (wide receivers) on day two. Let's not forget Patton was coming into his own last year. Beckham is overrated. Glad the Niners didn't sale out to get him.

They drafted ward because the niners are a defensive team first and foremost and that was the position of most need and also we it Stevie Johnson. And beating St. Louis on a consistent basis? Niners haven't lost at home to a division team since 08 so I'm pretty sure that's at least a split no matter the away game. And about the championship game the turnovers were inexcusable but the last pick was just a tremendous play by Sherman rather than a bad play by kap. And did you forget that Gore was completely shoutout that day, only 15 yards. If gore and the oline had a productive 60plus yard game we would've won easily. So stop singling out kap who was the only reason we were in that game. Boldin, crab, and vernon all had drops that day too.
