Rich “This looks like a home run.” Yeah ok man. Because super hero games have been so well. Just because you put flashy graphics on a pig, it’s still just a pig.
Hey DF, this is the second week in a row that the intro is being cutoff on the Apple Podcasts version! Have to come to UA-cam to hear the beginning. Love the show!
@coliander4180 Hard disagree. Really depends on a per game basis. I play Helldivers 2 with frame gen at 45 native 90 output and it looks and responds great. Way better than rocky 60 or 45 alone. Frame gen 60 - 120 is also great. It's mainly frame gen for low input framerates that is bad. 3rd person or isometric gsmes really benefit.
A 40 fps mode for GTA 6 on PS5 Pro (or all the base consoles too for that matter) while pushing graphics as far as possible with all the AI upscaling, RT features, etc. would be pretty dope tbh.
Yeah all of it. Let's do 320p base res with maximal FSR 1 applied. So much RT that we can only push 10fps then repeat those frames 4 times each to create a 40fps mode.
@matthewsmith3817ps5 is equivalent to a 2070 super… if you think you need a 6090 to play this on pc then this game will literally run at 10 fps on ps5.
A more accurate headline would have been “Patch for FFVII Rebirth performance mode released, nothing actually fixed.” In order for the marketing and product manager folks at Square-Enix in Japan to get that isn’t actually acceptable, please keep complaining directly to SE that nothing has been fixed. Otherwise they will see headlines saying the performance mode is “fixed” and if there isn’t enough noise, they will think “ok good, we’ve resolved this, no one is complaining anymore.”
Actually, the update broke the progression of chapter 12's "can't stop won't stop" quest. The ultimate party animal quest now hangs on part 3 of 5.. We are waiting for a patch to fix the patch
Ya, I looked at it after the update hoping for even a slight improvement. But it looks exactly the same😂. Nothing changed at all that I can tell. The "sharp" mode just adds some pretty bad pixalation but the image quality looks exactly the same as in the "smooth" mode and as before the patch. Kinda funny to be honest. I like the game so far and am willing to put up with the blur but it I'd annoying how smeared it looks.
100%. Before the DF days I remember when I’d wake up early on Saturdays to watch GamerTV and “Gamer's Guide To…” on Bravo for all my weekly dose of gaming. 😂
35:42 - 37:38 Actually, DualSense's PC Support is already partially supported Wireless Connectivity via Bluetooth since last year, in an official capacity. *It just that Sony didn't advertise it (and requires a controller firmware update)* , it and it took several months for some users to discover it. Turns out: the Sony Input API was stealthily updated as part of the DualSense Edge PC Support, so if a game were to be shipped (or updated) with DualSense Edge support: then you'd get Native wireless connectivity via Blueteooth. Do note that Haptic Feedback isn't supported due to "Bluetooth software limitations", hence: "partial support". meanwhile, third-party solutions already support it since day 1 (minus for Haptic Feedack, due to the same reasons above). it's quite baffling how Sony continually drops the ball in terms of their own Controller Support in the PC Space, especially when it isn'tt easily accessible to all developers without SDK.
The DualSense features being unavailable on PC without a cable is such an awkward oversight by Sony. They release all their formerly exclusive games on PC and even come up with a USB dongle for their headsets that is incompatible with controllers but works on PC.
Yeah indeed man. I just don't get why sony doesn't release PC dual sense and dualshock 4 drivers and make it work with bluetooth? Heck for all I care even if I have to buy their damn proprietary wireless dongle I would. I have PS5 and PS4 and it has always bothered me when I want to play a game on PC and I must connect it via cable to get the full support (there are drivers for wireless but it isn't official and it's hit and miss really as in you get full support but again you don't, somethings always missing).
Would love to see Alex give a synopsis of the whole MCU movie by movie - based off what he's absorbed via pop culture osmosis and what random little bits he's learned here and there. Comedy gold lol. Also Marvel vs Capcom 1943 - make it happen!
I normally avoid increasing sharpness on my TV because it tends to exaggerate upscaling artifacts and overall "blockiness", but I have found it useful for FFVII Rebirth with Performance Smooth enabled. Menu text takes a hit, but the actual gameplay is much more crisp with added sharpness. I'm guessing that the anti-aliasing on Performance Smooth is aggressive enough to prevent shimmer/blockiness problems that are typical with artificial sharpening.
Yeah I must just be less picky or sit far enough from my TV- Performance Smooth looks great to my eyes and I've been enjoying the game. Hardly a "problem" imo
On Apple Podcasts, this episode hasn't been uploaded properly. It started with John talking mid-sentence about some game's excellent character rendering and art direction. Could you get that file checked and re-uploaded, please?
After having a conversation with somebody who worked at Microsoft for years, I have a better understanding of how they operate behind-the-scenes. Where their employee culture is second nature to the bottom line. They choose that bottom line over quality in their games. Which is why we don’t see many, if any games, especially this generation that push the boundaries of what the system can do. Now, that employee seemed to think that this isn’t a Phil Spencer issue. This is a issue that has him trapped in between corporate and his aspirations as a game fan himself. The problem is, the budget for these AAA titles has spiraled out of control. Instead of focusing on making it easier for developers to develop, most companies have simply made the hardware and hope that developers develop around it. Which is why we don’t see many third-party games, taking advantage of the power and features that these consoles have. Simply developing like they did last generation and using horsepower instead of features that would help make their games that much better. Whether that is an issue with the SDK for these consoles or they are just developing for the lowest denominator… It hasn’t done this generation all that well. As we still haven’t seen the best of what these consoles can do. If you ask me, one of the best examples is Metro: Exodus. As they are showcasing raytracing at its best with bounce lighting at 4K/ 60. Something that no one thought would be possible on these consoles. If they were able to do it, other developers can do it, but don’t. The game looks phenomenal because of it. So why haven’t we seen any first party examples? As I said to this employee from Microsoft, without the software showcasing, the power of the console… It’s tough to relay why people should upgrade. As it is now, we are just playing lesser resolution, upscaled versions of games that we played on the Xbox One X. Which makes absolutely no sense considering the abysmal CPU power it had. Yet the more modern system with more power can’t do as good or better? So I don’t have high hopes for next generation unless Microsoft changes their ways. You can have the most powerful system on the market, but without the software to push it and support it… What’s the point?
@@deepblue8143 You and I both. If they could do 4K/60 on Forza 7 and make it look as sharp as it did… Why can’t they do it for the newest? it just seems like there’s something off and I don’t think it’s the power of the systems. I think the cost of development has gotten out of hand and these companies like Microsoft refuse to lay out the money to create AAA titles. So they are just doing AA versions of their franchises and relying on updates over time to hopefully sort any issues out. But the games just aren’t as crisp as they were. Many of them are running at an upscaled 1440p, instead of 4K. Or at least something in between 1440p and 4K. On top of that, the resolution of textures has seemingly gone backwards or the form of AA or upscaling they are using is creating blurriness within those textures. My question to the Microsoft employee was, instead of spending money buying up all of these developers… Why don’t they put that money towards creating truly incredible AAA games? For which, they replied… I totally agree. It’s very obvious that games like Perfect Dark, Fable and Rare’s next game are in development hell. As we have heard little about any of them for the past five years. Which says to me that either the money isn’t there to create what the developers want to or they just have no direction of where they want to go and created great videos of their aspirations… With no idea how to actually get to the end goal or maybe not even know what the end goal is. just released a tech demo of milestones that they may never be able to achieve. Again, if they focus on at least a half dozen AAA games with the highest quality, then those games are going to sell systems. But, it seems like they are focusing on AA games and wondering why nobody’s buying systems. Totally ass backwards thinking.
@MakeLifeExtraordinary once again spot on. Forza 7 vs Forza Motorsport is a perfect example. Forza 7 is the better looking game and to me, it's not even up for debate. It is much sharper on the One X compared to the Series X. They had years upon years of development, it is a next gen only game yet somehow it came out looking worse. The raytracing in particular does not look good, it is too low resolution and everything ends up looking messy because of that. Clearly something is wrong and I'd love to know what. I'm sick of asking myself why did I purchase this console. It also seems like they should have put a faster cpu in the One X since it clearly trumps the Series S in terms of power. Where are all the games Microsoft? We're waiting..
I think using ray tracing was the mistake Ray tracing is the future but the series X wasn’t really designed around it and the amd graphics doesn’t let them run it to the point where it looks great. So you sacrifice performance and visuals using the ray tracing features. So if they release a new console with better ray tracing and ai ml upscaling then they can use the tech like metro exodus with global illumination. But add ray traced reflections and RTAO. Then Forza Motorsport and other games really would look great. It’s similar to what unreal is doing but they are using software which requires even more compute. The problem is the new consoles are powerful in the way developers used to make games in the old ways and they are basically low spec in the way you make new games.
@@blankoutcast awesome reply. I totally agree. I also think they need to add processors specifically for physics. As, it’s time we get physics for gameplay. Just not for show. Like, my example has always been being able to shoot the corner of the top of a building so it falls on top of an enemy and kills them. For which, the enemy can do the same to you. Which totally changes, the gameplay. allowing a different experience every time somebody plays. Not to mention, more suspense, as there is more ways than shooting you in the face that the enemy can kill you.
60fps is the new "30fps" that most people want to have. Game studios, Playstation and Xbox need to catch on already and deliver. "Visual effects" and eye-candies must come as a secondary consideration after the stable 60fps.
I would argue that the damage to the platform is massive and beyond repair; and that it just is not Twitter any longer. I call it x to acknowledge that.
Ps vr 2 and the resident evil games are chefs kiss worth it. I’ve been a gamer since Nintendo days and those games are easily top 5 experiences in gaming
@@aboveaveragebayleaf9216 usually in motion capture, facial capture, performance capture etc, a ton of tweaking has to be done by animators, even in Hollywood productions. If this isn't the case here then that's a huge win for the industry.
@@aboveaveragebayleaf9216 If I'm not mistaken, it's more about having to fix errors with the motion capture or tweak things that don't quite line up right with the character's physical frame or pose or something. Normally there's a lot of work involved in taking motion capture video and turning it into a high quality facial animation. Mentioning in the video that they didn't have to modify it is more of just a brag that it works very smoothly, aka, needs little extra work to transform an actors performance into game content. Considering workload (and therefore budget) is the biggest crisis the industry is currently facing, that's very important.
This idea of current consoles' CPUs being underpower is really silly. People are concluding that based on some CPU limited games? Here's why I don't buy that narrative... The first reason being; The upgrade from last gen CPUs was absolutely gargantuan, and yet, ask yourself whether games are significantly more dynamic/simulated than we've seen in the past. The honest answer is "NO!" Heck, you can boot up decade+ old games, and conclude that much of today's games are way less dynamic, even after YEARS since stuff like Crisis. CPUs have only gotten TENS of times more powerful, so stop demanding better results right?😒 The second reason is; most games/engines are still poorly optimized for multi-threaded workloads. Even in a hypothetical game that does a decent job keeping those cores/threads busy, the way workloads are divided up and scheduled can open up a ton of efficiency gains. The type of workloads makes a difference too. A busy CPU doesn't always mean work is progressing smoothly. Some taks can be handled in more efficient ways, further maximizing potential. Which tiew into my last point. Finally: There's also the fact that today's hardware(especially consoles) are SO MUCH better suited for off-loading tasks to the GPU and other hardware blocks! Whether it's file decompression, culling and draw calls, sound professing, or any number of random compute tasks... it's all stuff that these modern hardware makes quick work of with dedicated hardware or their massively parallel GPU cores. So it begs the question: How are consoles with such POWERFUL CPU's NOT doing anything that beyond what the pitiful CPUs of last gen did, even WHILE they were bogged down with other CPU-taxing tasks? These CPUs obviously aren't being fully exploited. Not even close. If something on the scale of GTA6 is possible(even at 30 frames!), that itself is evidence that our current crop of games aren't representative of the capability of current consoles' CPUs.
If I remember correctly, Rockstar has never targeted 60 fps on consoles for gta/rdr mainline games. I think people should not set themselves to disappointment. Their priority is cinematic experience and world simulation.
GTA 5 ran on a XBox 360 CPU. What crazy new features do they include for GTA 6 not to run on a PS5 CPU with 60 FPS. GTA6 shouldn't be CPU limited if they properly optimize it. And if it's only GPU limited on a PS5, it would easily reach 60 FPS on a PS5 Pro.
@@cube2fox Better AI, better physic, more density in population. Better city and world simulation in general. You do realise that GTA 5 is became 60 fps on PS5 and RDR2 is still 30 fps right? RDR1 also recently became 60 fps. They don't care about 60 fps.
I'm hoping that since we got that free-camera demo after the trailer it means we can expect similar fidelity in gameplay. That was definitely running in real time and didn't appear to be a super limited and controlled view frustum (one of the tricks that allows cutscenes to look nicer than gameplay). A big part of the design philosophy of tech like nanite and Lumen is that the scaling is tied more to output resolution than what is actually happening in the game (hence "designed with upscaling in mind" titles). So if they can do all of that in real time I don't think it's unreasonable to think we will be able to get similar fidelity in gameplay.
@EXiLExJD Superheroes have been overdone for several years now. Given how little of it is successful currently, I'm surprised they keep making more. Putting all the movies and shows aside, there are very few more recent superhero games worth playing in my opinion. The Arkham Batman series, though those came out before everyone was getting tired of superheroes. Still good though. The first Insomniac Spiderman game. I can't really recommend the second one as I found it to feel like high quality bland slop if that makes sense. But the first one is pretty good and feels like it had some passion. And my personal favorite that flew under the radar, Guardians of the Galaxy. It's so freaking good and didn't pick up much traction. I don't even really classify Guardians as "superhero" crap. It's a marvel property but it's a fun character driven Sci-Fi adventure with no "super heroes" to be seen. It's so good. Genuinely great characters and writing, and thankfully in its own separate Canon not connected to any other media. Big shame people passed it by because it's lumped in with the overload of Marvel properties and launched after the Avengers game slop.
@EXiLExJD I only buy good games, so I'm not tired of super hero games. Superman Returns, Arkham series, and Sony Spider Man is all I've played and I'm not tired of it.
@@MrWizardGG hahahaha GOT EM!!! Im in the same boat. Though I will say I'm tired of millions (billions by now) of dollars and hundreds of jobs being wasted over them.
As a PSVR2 owner, I'm sad. Now I only turn it on once every 1-2 months to make sure it's all working and to make myself feel better for buying a $500 brick dust collector.
@ChicagoBulls1984 Listen If you want to dive into triple A VR experience PSVR2 is the cheapest way to go, If you already have a PS5. If you have a capable PC too then Quest 3 is still like same price as PSVR 2.
if we see a good implementation of upscaling on the PS5 pro then we should games circa 40fps reaching 60fps in a 1440p quality mode looking very good. GTA games are made to scale over 10 years so the release versions next year will operate on minimum spec on ps5/pro/series x/s...dont forget the S ! Then over the years we will see more fidelity and fps
I think that final question was confusing backward compatible with cross generational... Cross-gen definitely held some games back imo But I've not heard anything to make me think back-compat has
@@TheIndulgers Idk it is better in some ways especially tethered to a pc, but u can’t tell me the quest on its own with its mobile chip can produce visuals equal to the ps5 running the psvr2
5:07 the Tech point to make here is not the Nanite density, it's the fact that it's achieved from a low poly mesh by using the new nanite tesselation. This has the benefit, that you dont have to store the extremely large asset.
I don't understand the benefit of Nanite tesselation. Hardware tesselation in GPUs already existed for years before Nanite came out. I guess Nanite is incompatible with hardware tesselation due to Nanite heavily using compute shaders?
@@defeqel6537 Pretty sure that's false. They never mentioned mesh shaders, they always talk about compute shaders only. Moreover, as far as I'm aware, mesh shaders only output data to the hardware rasterizer, while Nanite uses software (compute shader) rasterization for small triangles.
@@cube2fox apparently, whether it uses HW or SW rasterizer depends on how small the triangles are edit: I haven't looked into Mesh Shaders, so no idea about any limitations there, but apparently the SW rasterizer uses Primitive Shaders
33:07 Why is he only bringing this up now? These issues have been known since before launch. He was fairly quiet about these problems a year ago during his review. Sony has fumbled and mismanaged the psvr2 into the ground. They should be embarrassed that they haven’t ported over psvr1 titles.
Sony definitely could have done better with PSVR2 promotion and advertising. They dropped the ball with it, but I would disagree they should port PSVR1 games if what you reference is somehow making every single one compatible somehow. Every single game would need individually updated and patched with updated visuals and controls whilst being recalibrated since it doesn't use lights and external camera etc. For only being a year old there are some incredible games out, so it's a shame bad press is sinking it more and more, but Sony need to stop falling asleep with it and should really drop the price to around £449 or so.
@@Tube2097 With the lacklustre library of psvr2, I'd say that backwards compatibility of pvvr1 game was/is essential. Sony did the customers dirty. I'm no game dev, but I also don't think it would be an unreasonable amount of work. PS4 and PS5 are both x86 and AMD hardware. The game libraries and accounts are share. For comparison - my Steam games work just as well on my Quest 3 as it did on my Oculus Rift and Index. Bay stations to inside-out tracking. Tethered to untethered. Different manufactures. Swapping pc hardware from and to Intel, Nvidia, AMD. All while upping resolution and graphics along the way. It all worked. Now there are good exclusive games on the psvr1 that are lost to time because Sony can't be bothered.
@@TheIndulgers Hardly what I'd call lacklustre. Some of the better PSVR1 games have been enhanced and ported across. There are some great ones missing which ultimately I could play by plugging PSVR1 into my PS5, however. PSVR2 has only been out a year and has quite a lot of quality titles with more already on the way. Aces of Thunder could be great, for example. Again, I emphasise the fact it has only been a year!
Seems Rebirth has hit a roadblock with trying to fix the performance mode. I don't see square doing what guerrilla did for horizon at all. Huge letdown. Maybe they try VRR? Failing that, it's waiting for a ps5 pro upgrade
I thought CS2 smoke was more of a voxel based thing? IIRC it doesn't do much in the way of fluid simulation or interaction with light like we are seeing in this trailer. I think it probably wasn't mentioned because it's a fundamentally different type of volumetric effect.
Yes. And the smoke can be shot thru, or moved with an he grenade. It spreads dynamically without clipping, receives light and casts shadows with self shadowing. If they apply that to moving smoke it would look stellar. Almost every volumetric effect comes down to voxels and i (without having seen the ue5 demo) am not sure that this game does something better than valve. A feature of ue5 at release was baked physics animation playback. Could be that and not interactive.
@@frederikgoogel5611 They were talking about the new UE5 smoke effect like it was a brand new thing. And my goodness did it ever look like a brand new thing. It did not look voxel in any way to me. But also no indication it's interactive. In fact, very unlikely to be or they woulda showed it off no doubt. Two very different smoke sims, both in underlying tech and intended product. I'm guessing that's why DF didn't mention it
There was this discussion about consoles having finite resources. And from Frame Rate, Quality and Resolution, something has to give. Problem is that with certain games all of them are compromised. Developers often simply do not respect the console and want more out of it than possible. And that is not a hardware issue, or the console lacking what it takes. And pretty often the games that are suffering on consoles are also suffering on PCs with 2x or more processing power.
Amy Hennig was writing/directing for Naughty Dog for over 10 years. She booted for going against the “grain” of what Neil Druckman wanted and Bruce wanted (so says Forbes) Good to see her finding work somewhere else and I hope the writing has a good touch from her and others.
@@ashleyrose2367 yeah I know John said she’s used to doing more narrative driven writing, but I think she can bring that to an open world game! Rooting for this!
Next update on star citizen isn't adding server meshing but replication layer , They're doing tests for server meshing in test servers but it might take an year or so for it be in our hands or end of this year ( maybe ) .
Even top PC CPU's can't handle Dragon's dogma 2 very well. Even if PS5 pro CPU was getting 50% uplift it would not fix problems in CPU unoptimized games. It would benefit couple of games at most.
It's the city areas. I saw someone playing on a 13900K and he was getting over 120 FPS in the wilderness, then he gets into the capital and it drops to the low-mid 40s with frame timing so bad that VRR can't even attempt to save it. The people who think that magically if you give a 1080p mode then every game would run perfectly need to play this game on PC to have that idea shattered.
It's funny how little John knows about VR but pretends to be an expert. A new opinion every week, which changes more often than underpants. So if he really had a clue, he would know that eye-tracking can be implemented at driver level. This is done with the Pimax Crystal. You don't need to make any major adjustments to the game, it just works. Yes, John has learned something again. lol
I can't believe you spent such a long time talking about absolutely nothing regarding the Marvel thing at the start. There's no gameplay and I know literally all of you know that means there's no actual point to discussing this.
For FF7 Rebirth, as someone with a 1080p tv, my ps5 set to 1080p looks better in perf mode than it does when I hook my PS5 up to my 1440p monitor. There is something wonky as heck going on. It wouldn't shock me if they update the UE version for the last game to get access to better upscaling solution.
not suprising since the base res is just slightly over 1080p so obviously it looks better without any upscaling while feeding a 1080p signal to a 1080p tv
@@dante19890 1080p at 43 inches shouldn't look noticeably sharper than 1200p upscaled to 1440p at 27 inches unless the upscaler is absolutely terrible.
43:17 I strongly agree with alex. Fram-time issues are more so the epidemic. There are games that are at 30fps, and are smooth. But most 30fps games are unstable and jittery with frame-time issues.
Completely agree with Alex re: discussing frametimes instead of framerates. It is much more informative and I think people will catch on quickly that any mention of 16ms = 60fps and 33ms = 30fps. It should become the new standard
I honestly think the Marvel 1943 trailer doesn't look good, some weird animations (when Black Panther is kicking the soldier it's just Panther's foot extending, touching the other character which then flys away after a big delay, no actual force in the kick, no real impact), Cap's eyes look dead, it all looks high res, but not believable. For cinematics they would have to be flawless. But gameplay is obviously most important for a game at the end.
I think Sony can’t really put in a much more powerful CPU into the PS5 Pro. Think about it. All the games on the Pro will still need to run on the base PS5. So it’s not like games are going to have separate souped up NPC AI logic for the Pro versus the base PS5. They are all going to have to fit into the CPU budget of the lowest denominator, which is the base PS5 CPU. Just my 2 cents, keep up the great work!
I always new it would be the same zen2 cpu, but expected higher clocks on a 5nm node atleast. 10 percent cpu increase and 45 percent gpu increase feel kinda weak to ps4 pros 30 percent and 100 percent increase.
Marvel 1943: Let's not get too excited just yet, folks. Zero gameplay shown. Also, I'd suspect you watch this game about as much as you actually play it, but that's just a hunch.
I think FF7 remake is fine. I don't really hear anyone except John and Alex (my name sake) complaining about this... as side note I think on a Oled, I think the sharp version looks pretty good. Maybe because of the blacks but yeah this game looks great. I wonder if this was on Xbox would they be this critical. Something like the PS4 pro vs the Xbox 1x. People probably don't remember, but I remember the GPU was 30 percent more powerful and the processor was 10 percent more powerful. And I remember slamming DF adding together the percentages and saying that the xbox 1x was 40 percent more powerful. And, I remember saying (The videos are still up) that you can't add the 2 up because delivering a frame takes more that just saying at 100 percent utilization it's 40 percent more powerful. Then they complain about being taken out of context. How about this actually hire some engineers on game production instead of having John and Alex spit balling and just saying things.
I hear you but still, I'll take 40 FPS instead of 30. 30 is simply too low, especially on an OLED. And if the game has a motion blur setting it's still not good. A 40 FPS mode would be amazing if they can pull it off
Nice subtlety by Rich on the rumblings about Xbox shifting to NV hardware, since they already do volume semi-custom silicon with Azure. I think one of these vendors will jump to HBM, or one other innovative memory technology/bus derived from data center, and will push out the upper edges of the pricing scale. I love how you all challenge each other, and hold each other accountable on accuracy, with a light tone.
I would gladly pay $1,000 or more for a Steam Machine. Having a powerful PC with the console like interface of the Steam Deck, and maybe a new Steam Controller would be so much fun ❤
I can understand where John is potentially coming from regarding rolling eyes at Marvel games, but it’s worth remembering the last three major games (Spider Man 2, Midnight Suns and Guardians) have all been excellent. Avengers does tend to skew perception but the reality is Marvel games recently have been very high quality if not the best sellers outside of Spider Man.
Yeah it's up to the consumer to not let crap products tarnish your opinion on non-trash products. If you bought Avengers or Suicide Squad and now are not excited for Marvel 1941, you only have yourself to blame for being stupid.
"I want everyone to stop saying the word framerate"... Halle-fucking-lujah, it's about time one of them said it. In almost all cases framerate is the wrong metric to be discussing, as it's typically misleading or just blatantly wrong. Hopefully he'll follow through with that statement when it comes to his expectations in optimized settings.
I also got the quest 3 (upgraded from quest 1) on John's recommendation as well and I've been blown away. Such great quality and great pick up and play compatibly with virtual desktop and Steam. It's made PC VR gaming much more compelling and less of a chore to setup each time.
"feels like the software is quickly drying up" RE4 Remake VR was in December, Vertigo, Legendary Tales, and Cyube VR basically just came out. Just because you're not using the headset because you're not hearing about huge AAA titles releasing doesn't mean support is drying up. As for 1st party, everyone is waiting for Sony to talk about their flat game plans just like people are waiting for them to talk about their VR game plans. Say what you want about the hardware, that's an opinion. But realize you can't hold the games argument against Sony when VR in general is barely supported. Edit: Dualsense works on PC wirelessly. I love DF in general, but they have some blind-spots that people should know about.
To clarify for others too, yes the triggers and haptics also work in wireless mode. But yeah we also have Madison vr which is a pretty big deal coming out this week. Psvr2 has a fantastic library. Better than the quest library and while obviously not as large, is really solid when compared to pc.
@@admanwhitmer Does the Duelsense haptics work wireless? I'm playing Returnal on PC right now but in order to get the advanced haptics and trigger haptics I have to use the controller wired. I see a trailer for PSVR2 for every other week, so it always seems like something is coming out for it. But some people turn their nose up because they aren't big budget or super flashy. The games look really good in the space, it really seems like the headset is getting a lot of hate just because. But hey I'm loving my time with it
@@sawdust8691 you have to disable steam input I believe? I’ve played apex, pacific drive and helldivers just recently wireless only with all of the haptics
I am assuming a notable amount of the feeling is from the recent shutdown of the Sony VR focused studios. Which isn't a weird take at all. On the note of dualsense - only some games do, which is exactly what Alex noted. It was a notable exception that spiderman on PC got limited wireless support for some features (and only via Steam Input), but even then, not all of it (you still need to use a wire to get everything). Edit: it's also worth noting that basic haptics isn't really the full dualsense setup, since you get that on any reasonable controller from the past 15 years anyhoo. It's all the other gubbins like adaptive triggers and, whilst I mostly mute it, the speaker.
Hey DF crew, not sure whats up but the audio podcast has been weird the last two episodes. Both episodes have not started from the beginning skipping the entire intro.
Alex DIDN'T watch Cap America 2 (AKA The Winter Soldier)?? But it's the best one! It's not just a good superhero movie, it's a great action movie, period!
Artificially limiting the capabilities of a hardware platform already struggling to gain momentum didn't work? Shocker! Glad PSVR is making progress on the PC front. Possibly the best VR hardware for the price.
@@rankcolour8780 I own a slightly older oculus and the support has been awful, the software is very opaque, and I don't trust Meta at all after everything they've already backtracked on. HDR and eye tracking is enough for me to prefer the hardware over the lenses but the lenses are something many people would prefer. In that case I'd argue it's still at least the better pick if not the better raw hardware
I thought that it was funny that Rich expressed surprise when John said that that Wii was backward-compatible. That console literally had GameCube controller ports and memory card slots on it under the flap. In addition to that, it has one of the few slot loaded optical drives that can accept smaller discs. Yes you can play GameCube games on the Wii.
When talking about Frame Gen, why does no-one ever mention the horrific artifacting it causes? exactly like tv's motion interpolation artifacting. It makes it unusable. I can't use it at all on my 4070.
Same, and AMD's approach adds so much latency. If I'm already running it at 60hz, I'll enjoy not having those artifacts, and if I'm below 60hz, it makes everything feel so much worse. I can't think of any time to use it.
Good point brought up there, if Sony connects the PSVR2 controllers directly through PS5 instead of the PSVR2 headset, that's gonna be a big hurdle for their PC support.
Possibly. Or it might be really simple. It's probably a riff off of Bluetooth, so it might just already be natively compatible with the hardware and just take some tweaking to make work on PC software. I could see it going either way and without a better look behind the hood who knows.
@@TheDarksideFNothing Not all PCs have bluetooth, or have the same bluetooth performance. There's a reason why Rift S tied the controllers to the headset.
@@defeqel6537 An adapter is not the same as a box. An adapter just splits the virtual link port into a displayport/hdmi and regular usb, it usually doesn't contain any chips or other functionality. But true they could just decide to ship a box that also contains bluetooth for controllers.
even if the PS5 could do GTA6 at 60, why would rockstar enable that when they can get the double dip market for the PS6 in 2030 which will be have the 'new feature' 60fps.
I always find it hilarious when people say PlayStation has nothing going on right now. I have a backlog like you wouldn’t believe on PlayStation. I absolutely have no time to get through all these game.
It sounds like John's behavior has been concerning lately, especially with his off-topic and confrontational remarks. In this particular instance, when Alex mentioned the limitations of using DualSense features without a USB cable, John's response about using an Xbox controller was completely unrelated to the discussion about Bluetooth connectivity issues with extra features (the DualSense work wirh bluetooth but that"s not the point of Alex). It seems like his comments are derailing the conversation and causing unnecessary tension. It's sad
At the risk of being too dismissive, AI generated NPCs/content in games sounds like absolute garbage. AI upscaling is one thing, but the entire point of media has always been to engage with something that other human beings made. This is just insidious.
You are indeed being too dismissive, just as Alex was on the last DF Direct when he said he wasn't sold on 'NPCs telling you their life story'. The point of that demo wasn't what the Ramen shop owner actually said, it was that designers could inject their own ideas, personality, and story into a live conversation! The content of the NPCs is still being created by humans, the twist is that content is no longer linearly scripted, repeating the exact same way, and limited by how many permutations the designers can afford to script and purchase voice acting for! Think of a game like Starfield, where the player freedom allows for things the writers didn't. Think of how extremely fun and intuitive actually talking to characters would be. This is a perfect example of that "Nvidia blasé" where something very obviously revolutionary and potentially powerful is dismissed by people because they aren't thinking big enough and because it disrupts current paradigms we're used to. AI is a tool in the hands of humans, these demos show off the capability and technical possibilities. People rushing to judgememt now is like judging the potential of a new graphics tech based on programmer art, before actual artists have had a chance to actually put it to proper use.
100% this. Art and storytelling has existed since we were cavemen, and it's purpose has been to be a medium for people to communicate and connect with one another in a way that language never could. I really believe it's an essential part of us as people, and AI is the absolute antithesis to this. Take music for example, the beauty in it resides in that every timbre, stroke and feeling of each and every note comes directly from another human who's expressing themselves through it straight to you. That's what makes it real and touching. The same notion applies through any creative medium and craft, to films, painting, games, novels, anything. It genuinely is depressing to imagine a future where that core attribute of crafting something with your own touch, the thing that makes all these art forms we love worth anything in the first place, be sacrificed to a program comprised of stolen data. And for anyone who thinks the opposite, that's fine. I hear from supporters of AI within creative mediums that it will lead to so many incredible innovations and new ideas. I can try and set aside my core beliefs for a second and imagine this and sure, that sounds nice and ideal in theory. But you may have too high hopes and expectations of an industry entirely fueled by capitalistic ventures and investors. It will almost exclusively be used to cut corners and replace people, not fuel creativity.
@@HEADSHOTPROLOLAI is more of a extension tool for human creativity, instead of just 1 scripted dialog for every player wouldn't a AI model trained based on all human interaction would give each player a more unique experience. Example Matrix demo AI dialog mod.
Its stil a human creation. The designers are the ones pulling the levers and architecting the way these npcs should behave. They aren't just random chatgpt instances.

I'm kinda surprised how attached people are to the "greatest generational leap" quote. It's just nonsense PR. Microsoft said similarly when going from Xbox One to Series X because it was RT capable. It shouldn't be taken literally.
Everything absolutely can be 60fps on fixed hardware. Developers have to program and make their games for it. Stop chasing fidelity and instead chase performance. Work with the limitations instead of against them. Never thought I’d hear someone from DF say something like that.
It’s the PC elitism again. I love Digital Foundry, but this growing move towards only PC gaming such get the nice things is becoming frustrating. Console gamers can 100% get 60fps if the games are designed that way - it may just mean the PC upgrades aren’t as big as Alex is hoping they might be. I can’t see what Marvel 1943 is doing that is so far away from Spider-man 2. We haven’t even seen playable footage yet so I’d like to hold hope some hope for a performance mode…. Ready for PS5 Pro. 😊

Decoupling FSR upscaling from the frame gen is great.

I just sit about 8ft away from the screen lol.
Yeah I must just be less picky or sit far enough from my TV- Performance Smooth looks great to my eyes and I've been enjoying the game. Hardly a "problem" imo

2nd week in a row the start of the recording is cut in the podcast platforms
Ok, so it wasn't just me. Thought it was a glitch with Google podcasts.
You have to send them an email, they probably don't read comments.
Well said, there are games on the One X and PS4 Pro that look better than these next gen games. I don't understand what happened. It's very odd to me.

Stuff like that is what the industry desperately needs.

CPUs have only gotten TENS of times more powerful, so stop demanding better results right?😒
The second reason is; most games/engines are still poorly optimized for multi-threaded workloads.
You know they will set themselves up for disappointment. Most people just cannot learn.
Gta 5 runs like a lumpy potato on 360.
We still can't say anything about Marvel 1943 as long as we don't see the gameplay loop and in-game visuals.
The only thing I have to say about it is that I'm incredibly tired of Cape Crap superhero media so I'll be skipping it regardless.
@EXiLExJD
Superheroes have been overdone for several years now.

@@cube2fox Pretty sure Nanite is using Mesh Shaders (or Primitive Shaders on PS5), and Compute Shaders only for BC

Didn't valve implement volumetric smoke in CS2?
I thought CS2 smoke was more of a voxel based thing?
IIRC it doesn't do much in the way of fluid simulation or interaction with light like we are seeing in this trailer. I think it probably wasn't mentioned because it's a fundamentally different type of volumetric effect.
They did but the volumetric effects are very rough in CS2
Yes but the smoke only fades in/out when interacting instead pf behaving physically correct by way of fluid simulation

@@steel5897 it's exactly my point. This game would be slow in towns even if PS5 pro CPU would be updated.

A new opinion every week, which changes more often than underpants. So if he really had a clue, he would know that eye-tracking can be implemented at driver level. This is done with the Pimax Crystal. You don't need to make any major adjustments to the game, it just works.

I had the exact same thing happen when I took my PS5 to a house with a 1080p TV last week. I thought I was going mad.
Kind of crazy they didn't upgrade to UE5 years ago. TSR would have fixed this.
not suprising since the base res is just slightly over 1080p so obviously it looks better without any upscaling while feeding a 1080p signal to a 1080p tv
Q: Hey John, our resident VR expert, what do you think about the PSVR/PC news?
A: I LOVE the Quest 3, it’s so great!
Love it when Richard brings out his Marvel knowledge!
The PSVR2's wire actually can come off, it's just not obvious.
Marvel 1943:
Let's not get too excited just yet, folks.
Ya I think the PS5 Pro might allow them to make a 40 FPS mode in GTA 6. 40 FPS modes are amazing
A possible $500+ console that can only manage 40fps in a new GTA game sounds absolutely terrible value
I hear you but still, I'll take 40 FPS instead of 30. 30 is simply too low, especially on an OLED. And if the game has a motion blur setting it's still not good. A 40 FPS mode would be amazing if they can pull it off
dont think they will develop a special mode just for the pro. Makes no sense. ps5 pro will just enhance the modes thats already there
Good to see John back and with all systems go!
His wishful thinking. Not going to happen. Nobody wants to deal with NVidia. And nowadays NVidia doesn't need to deal with anyone.
They should use an Intel SoC on the next Xbox.
I would gladly pay $1,000 or more for a Steam Machine. Having a powerful PC with the console like interface of the Steam Deck, and maybe a new Steam Controller would be so much fun ❤
Hope you used a reference code for your mates getting Quest 3 John 🤣
that marvel howling commando stuff was sublime, easily the best skin texture i've seen
The Callisto Protocol and Alan Wake 2 look even more realistic I would say.
Its time for the best part of Monday morning! Im glad you're feeling better John!

Does the Duelsense haptics work wireless?
I'm playing Returnal on PC right now but in order to get the advanced haptics and trigger haptics I have to use the controller wired.
If I use it wireless I only get basic haptics and no trigger resistance.
Is it game specific or does wireless only work with basic normal haptics? Cause there are haptics, just not the advanced kind.

Artificially limiting the capabilities of a hardware platform already struggling to gain momentum didn't work? Shocker!
Glad PSVR is making progress on the PC front. Possibly the best VR hardware for the price.
I don't think so, lenses on quest 3 are still vastly superior and tbh that's more important to a LOT of people.
