Recently went on my first hunt with another inexperienced friend. He got a good hit on a spike and I told myself that I wasn’t going to take a shot so we could focus on gutting that deer slow and proper. I’m from WA and went to MO to hunt whitetails for 5 days. 10 other guys there only 1 of them were out all day like us. Lots of guys don’t take it seriously because it’s easy hunting (compared to blacktail in western WA) we’re going back this year. Glad to listen to these podcast lots of helpful advice!
We definitely need a part 2! I would like to hear more about meat spoilage, temps and times, what to do about wind shifting, the farthest deer have gone based on wounds (when are you looking farther than probable)
Starting off the discussion by saying that rifle hunters aren't avid whitetail hunters when there are plenty of examples of guys who go state to state following the rifle seasons, spending just as much time in the field exclusively for whitetail is like the snobs here in Colorado telling me I'm not a real trout fisherman because I don't use a fly rod. We're all hunters and wish we had more time available to improve our craft and enjoy the pursuit. The rest of the show was great.
Especially down here, in the south, gun seasons are long - not just 1 or 2 weeks. A lot of people will bow hunt just to extend their seasons, but prefer using a rifle and wouldn’t call themselves a “bow hunter”.

Another michigan hunter here! I remember working night shift 6 or 8 years ago. Id listen to as many wired to hunt podcasts as i could. I got addicted to hunting id say mostly due to that show. All the things i learned taught me that hunting isnt just about luck. I remember mark announced his first kid, inteviewed all the greats from infalt to the drurys and the ole 9 finger chronicals guy mr Dan. I dont listen to too many podcasts these days but glad to see everyones doing good.
I felt really comfortable shooting my bow until shooting from a saddle. Something I wasn’t paying attention to was the left and right lean of my bow. I missed the first shooter buck at 20 years because of how the bow was canted to the left as I leaned around the tree. I didn’t have that issue when sitting in a tree stand.
Tracking. I run a 2000 acre club in eastern NC. Mix of AG and timber. We are almost never alone, so first rule after the shot, contact another member and wait for them to show up and help,IF it was a decent shot. That will always put you past 30 minutes. Even if we can see the deer down. Next blood tracking, we all carry a roll of toilet paper with us, every spot of blood gets a square of TP. Can be traced day or night and biogedrades quickly. If there is good blood we will only track for about 30 minutes. If still going we mark the spot, TP, and return in a couple hours. Depending on temperature and confidence in blood or no blood. Only lost 2 in 6 years and a lot of meat collected

The way started referencing my aim point. I have taught myself to do is to aim for my exit point. That way your arrow will hopefully follow straight through the most vitals in that position.
Love your podcast and all your other content. I would like to lead off by saying that all avid whitetail hunters for the most part are bow hunters didn’t hurt my feelings. I do however think that it’s false. I do bow hunt occasionally for the extra opportunity early. For velvet bucks. I’m active duty military and spend my fall season deer hunting not only the state I’m in (Louisiana) but also where I’m from (Alabama) and where I was stationed for ten years of my career (Kentucky). Those three are a given each year then there’s usually 2-3 others that I rotate through. So between those states I hunt (with a firearm) either rifle or primitive from mid October to mid February basically every day or couple days. I get the the ten day a year example given but that’s not representative of all states either. In Alabama or Mississippi for example you can hunt with a rifle from thanksgiving week to mid February. Just giving a different perspective from one of us that do our damage mostly with the boom stick lol.
According to Oxford dictionary, avid means having or showing a keen interest or enthusiasm for something. Trying to classify it to archery or bow hunting is trying to make one feel superior.
It does seem a bit elitist to say that only bowhunters are serious whitetail hunters. I guess the 11 months I spend with trail cams, food plots, etc. just make me a fair weather hobbyist? Seems to me that if bowhunters were that serious they wouldn't need 3+ months to harvest a whitetail, unless you need some extra time in there to track wounded deer?
The trouble with 3D archery targets is they don't duck your shots ... they just stand there and take the shots and never move so you still can miss in the field ... so you still might not be ready
I mean if you go to 3D competitions and you either shoot their novelty shoots where there's usually a bunch of people standing there watching or you just get into where there's a group of people and you start talking to them in that it always makes me a little bit nervous and can either make me shoot worse or I shoot better because I'm trying my hardest but it's good practice I feel
Maine's modern firearms season starts last couple of days of October and runs up to Thanksgiving followed immediately by muzzleloader. So, a whole month of firearm hunting in Maine.
@@SavagelandHunting Yeah. I wish MO's firearms was longer. We get a couple antlerless seasons throughout that extend firearms season and now CWD extensions in CWD zones, but nothing like Maine gets and definitely nothing like Southern states get.
i practice my pull on stand when i set up and yes i accidentally hit the release button trigger, lol broad head still razor sharp arrow reacquired from tree deer come walkin from that direction 2 hours later no problemo
In reference to the die hard deer hunters not being rifle hunters only. I’d say that’s an odd assumption considering many people especially traditional New Englanders take their vacations during the rifle season, and or waiting for snow to track deer which normally is not a possibility even in October. With such thick woods many have better odds of they are walking through the woods instead of sitting in a stand all day.

I was thinking about how my family members are with grocery shopping. Even though they usually buy the same things, they like to show off what they bought when they come back home. YHey you all. I Love your show, and I think you are looking for a rebuttal when you say Whitetail hunters should be bow hunters. I am a fishing guide in AK and I don't have the opportunity to bow hunt in the lower 48. However, I am pretty successful on getting a good deer in PA in rifle season.
I need to start a convo, … so arrows have 3 “feathers, for cheap I shoot Easton 2017 with field points, … except, arrows come built for compound bows, I end up having to strip the fletching and re alight, anyone else have this issue…. Or source
i disagree. i consider myself a avid whitetail hunter but its all i do and tthink about. i hunt almost everyweekend and sometimes 3 days in the week during seasons . so i disagree if you only spend a few days a year hunting your not a whitetail freak. i start my season withspring turkey summer hogs bowfishing gar shooting dove and teal then sept elk but once oct starts nothing else matters but deer and i use bow most the season except when weather or area of operation are not favorable. im a disabled vet so i understand the working man cant get out like they want but ive worked for 30 years and that never stopped me. might have caused a argument a few time and a divorce but i love hunting more than any women and my wife knows that.
Idc who you are.... Hunt with whatever weapon you choose. Just be ethical. If you take a rifle and shoot 300+ routinely... maybe you should practice your stalking and sign reading so you csn get closer and make a better ethical range shot. I mean yea in the mountains you may need to reach out for an elk. You shouldn't be shooting almost a half mile to take game. You are just a marksman at that point, not a hunter. Also, if you are in a state that allows baiting... Do not consider yourself a fine hunter. Its not even a matter of pressured vs unpressured. Its just an attractant that is almost guaranteed to attract a deer. Especially come cold season. Its not teicking the deer like using a call, its training them to become reliant on that food source.

The WORST is when after you've made the shot, and it starts raining. Not only can it wash away the blood, but you know that, so you push faster.

I shoot recurve traditional , plus kids shoot my arrows, but that rye fletch is problematic

Anytime I see a deer the first word in my brain is "ope". Anyone else? Its to varying degrees on my kind depending on how close the deer is too. 😆
