So he used a low tuned baritone, a tone below the usual BEADF#B baritone tuning. Baritone is usually a 4th below standard tuning. He is tuned ADGCEA then he adds a capo on 3 = C F Bb Eb G C. Then he plays A shapes but it sounds in the key of F (not the usual key of G for a baritone when you use A shapes - as its tuned a tone low) So yes he could have just tuned to C F Bb Eb G C and not used a capo at all ! But then the strings aren’t so slack. Its a mixolydian chord structure. I IV b7 etc
I would see it like this: VERSE - F | Bb/D | F/C | C | means 1 | 4 over 3 | 1 over 4 or Fsus | 5 | - the C (5) has an E in the chord, means we have an F IONIAN SCALE in the VERSE. The CHORUS modulates to Bb means - Bb | F/A F | Gm7 | Bb/F | Eb F | or - the 1 | 5/3 5 | 2 | 1/5 | 4 5 back to the one. You need two scales, F IONIAN, then Bb IONIAN. When you see it from the CAPO, you start in A IONIAN, and then you switch to D IONIAN. Sounds complicatet, but you only have to change one note.
I think this is funny cause as soon as I heard him I became obsessed with trying out his tone and such and I then came to the realization ... this is why Eddie Van Halen fans got obsessed with his "brown sound". Mkgees sound did it for me. Now someone has to coin his guitar sounds with a name such as *blank* sound and hes set for the history books lol.
Yes, maybe... I think his sound is one part of his performance, but when he would play it straight into a Fender Amp it would be great too. He is a good player and a great performer. Also the songwriting and composing is very good.
Great video. You only missed the fact that he also was using a GK3 pickup (red light on his guitar) going into a roland synth during the live Kimmel performance.
@@Luke-lp4io It's kind of difficult to spot be he is actually using a GK2a pickup! Its more triangular, and some people have reported that the newer GK3 doesn't always work well with the much older VG8
Hi Markus, you play wonderfully. I have a question. I'm a beginner, but fascinated by this song, and would love to learn it. I have Squire tele baritone with fairly thick strings... but somehow can't het the tuning right. Currently I'm on the drop A tuning, but obviously this one does not really work with the capo on fret 3. Tried tuning it up, but strings are to thick :)... can you help me out with the tuning suggestion to get the fret 3 capo? Thanks so much.
Tune down 4 Halfsteps so the low E string becomes a C. Strings would be C F Bb Eb G C, but now you may need thicker strings, or better a Bariton Guitar.
i think there's definitely a vocoder in there, the tone you've presented sounds a bit dry compared to the track. listening to the rest of the album definitely gives a hint there's some vocoding going on with the guitar. fantastic video though!
You got it spot on, man! Not many people have fleshed out the sound and as accurate of a breakdown of what he’s doing.
Thanks 🙏🏻
thank you dad

I hope to one day understand this alien language 😐
@@MV_MarkusVollmerI also hear the tonal center shift for the chorus

I wouldn’t usually take the time comment on UA-cam videos, but this 100% needed for me to express my thanks. Excellent break down, expertly done!
Thank you! greetz
we love the baritone guitar
I don't, I HATE that dadgum beartone gittar. God intended songs to be 440hz

it'll be so awesome if you do a lesson about your fingerstyle style, like how you pick with your fingers, looks so fluid

Ist die Gitarre, die du spielst eine Bariton, oder hast du einfach dickere Saiten drauf und runtergetuned? :)
Hi, das ist eine Standard Bariton mit Bariton Saiten. Suche Danelectro 56 Baritone BMF

Im sorry but can someone tell me what tuning I have to set my guitar im so confused
So how would i tune a standard guitar for this song?
Tune down 4 Halfsteps so the low E string becomes a C. Strings would be C F Bb Eb G C, but now you may need thicker strings, or better a Bariton Guitar.
What is the exact tuning of each string Prior to placing capo?
C F Bb Eb G C from low to high
“Prior to placing the capo” ie Without the capo - the tuning has to be ADGCEA
tuning on normal strings?

You said Bon Iver, Blake Mills, and R cuter? Sorry how do you spell that last one? Having trouble finding it.
I mean Ry Cooder , but that‘s my opinion, I think there are some similarities
I really hurt myself playing the b-part while following the tab (1st bar at asus2/c#) ;-)
spaß beiseite danke für den breakdown!
What is the tunning? Thanks!
Sad that i dont have money enough to get a baritone guitar, wish i could play his songs
