    I went to school with a few people who stuttered. I never understood the bullies. I thought it was adorable and helpful because i have trouble following conversations and once they were finished with whatever word they were stuttering on I found my place within the conversation at the same time the conversation continued and i was like omg I have found a group of people I can talk to and follow!

    • @negative4life
      @negative4life Рік тому +1

      I'm ride or die for my glitchy/twitchy bestie & super protective b/c I know how it feels to be made fun of for things out of your control. I grew up in a time where you had to hide your flaws to avoid relentless bullying from both children & adults, alike. He was born after people started trying to treat others with some kindness.
      He's younger than I am, but we're both stuttering ADHDers. We have the best conversations b/c both of us "get it". We cut each other off with random thoughts & sometimes finish each other's sentences in unison, but neither of us has ever finished a word for the other person. It's just rude, & when you have a speech "impediment" (I use that term loosely b/c it's 2023, for Pete's sake.) you usually get kindness, empathy, & patience on the side. He reminded me that it's ok to be unapologetically me & I'm grateful for that every day. ❤️
      Oh, & I forgot my original thought... It never bothered me when someone else had a speech issue. I didn't even realize mine was noticeable until I was a preteen.

    When I went to Marine bootcamp there was a guy in my platoon that had a terrible stutter and a lisp.
    On black Friday when you meet your drill instructors and the fun begins - he was singled out immediately. He was taken away by the only DI we had who was a career infantryman.
    I felt bad for him.
    Turned out that the Kill Hat instructor had also had a terrible stutter at one time. He remembered the speech techniques he was taught to help him with it. He spent an hour with this guy everyday for the first week teaching him. Guys like me who were well spoken and well read were "encouraged" to read with him in our downtime.
    I was his squad leader so I shouldered most of the reading. We'd read "A Rifleman went to War". I'd read a chapter out loud from my copy, then he'd read the same chapter back from his after he'd seen the words and heard them spoken. We read that book cover to cover twice in a week.
    It worked. It was pretty damn amazing
    He lost his stutter. He lost most of his lisp. He became an avid reader.
    He only got better at it as his confidence built up.
    I haven't though about that in awhile.

    I had to take speech therapy my entire school life. It wasn't until my last year of highschool did I finally decide I wasn't gonna let people tell me how I should talk, and that I was just gonna talk how I felt comfortable. Nothing against you, Drew, or anyone else. That's just the choice I made for myself, since my overbite and tongue-tied thing wasn't gonna be going anywhere without surgery, and I wasn't about to have my jaw sawed off and lengthened just so I can talk better and stuff. The 4 years of braces did plenty of work to satisfy me as it is. And certainly nothing against the speech therapists I had either. They were all nice and fun. I just came to the conclusion that I'd never ever be able to say the word "girl" properly no matter how much I tried. I just tell people I have trouble saying my Rs and Ls right away to get it out of the way. And it can even lead to some hilarity sometimes with the right people.
    Been watching you since the Dog Vlogs btw.

      Hi Moos! I have Rhotacism myself, trouble with any word that has an "r" in it, and I like your story a lot. Speech Therapy pulled me from my favorite class, English, and forced me into a tiny room with an adult holding a rubber tongue and telling me I needed to work harder to sound better. I am now 30 and my Rhotacism still has not been "fixed". I am also majoring in English so I can teach English at a higher level of education. Changing perceptions around speech impediments is super important to me and I am happy to know that so many others out there feel the same way as me. There is nothing wrong with how we speak, we merely sound "different" from everyone else.

      @@TheBrenanas Yay! So happy to hear your story too. English was my favourite subject in school as well, and still is! I'm working on becoming a novelist. I'm 28 now and I write every single day and have been creating stories ever since I was 6. ^^ I wasn't always the best at English class tho. Use to get Fs cuz of my learning disorder and autism, but ever since they put me in special ed, and ever since that book writing project I got in 7th grade, I've got nothing but straight As in English for the rest of my school life! The inspiration to write and read books reeally saved me, in more ways than just with grades. Hope you become an English teacher one day so you can inspire others like me! X3
