"He doesn't look high" lmao
Steve plays a Gibson Firebird here. On the original track he plays all the guitars sbd keyboards. He would go on to record a few solo albums where he plays everything. Lyrics by original drummer Jim Capaldi.
Steve Winwood was previously in The Spencer Davis Group where he sang the hits "I'm a Man" (1967) and "Gimme Some Lovin'." (1966) He was 17 when he recorded "Gimme Some Lovin." You need to hear those vocals and his Hammond organ work. A bit of MOTOWN in the Btitish Invasion sound.
@Chris Wright Did you know that Steve Marriott and the rest of Small Faces sing and play percussion on a different song on the Mr Fantasy album?
@@johncampbell756 and Blind Faith as well solo and gigs with Clapton etc - The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys is a monster track
To think the guitar isn't even the instrument Steve Winwood is best known for. He's insanely talented.
The instrument he's best known for is his VOICE!
... and blazing on the Hammond organ. Check out The Spencer Davis Group playing 'I'm A Man' with 18 year old Steve Winwood playing organ and singing (he was also the co-writer of the song)!
@@donhawkins3461 And the Hammond B3
Insane talent...and his voice is just as good now.
Check out videos of Steve at 14..which is when his professional career started.
YES!!!! Next Traffic song: “LOW SPARK OF THE HIGH HEELED BOYS”. It’s a slow burn, immersive experience. ❤
Yes! There is a live performance on UA-cam of the group playing this song.
Steve recently did a 50yr anniversary version of that song with only him playing the piano and it is so good. He posted it to UA-cam. With a listen.
@@gliebzeit I prefer the studio version.
The long version of Low Spark.
@@pvank1799 Yes!
They are tge bomb. Steve Winwood. Kisses to the universe
You won’t go wrong taking deeper dives into Steve Winwood collaborations into Traffic, Blind Faith, etc. this was an era of great, great British rock.
That whole Blind Faith album is solid fire.
Blind Faith was one of those "greater than the sum of it's parts" and it's parts were incredible! So good!
@@matthew6427 and nettiemac… agree, agree, I can’t get enough of Can’t Find My Way Home, Presence of The Lord, etc, etc. I was a young man back then, the group (Traffic too) left an indelible mark.
"Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" is the epitome of songs to relax to at the end of a long week. Steve Winwood's "Arc of a Diver" is one of those albums you can have playing in the background as you go about your day. Good summertime memories with this music. 🙂
"Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" is one of my favorite songs of all time! I think you would love it Polo!
Play the studio version though ...in the live video I saw they were all too high. 🤣 Studio version is fire though!
Yes
Polo reacts please check out black snake from atomic roooster next
I finally found the Low Spark album on vinyl after a long search. I play frequently
Ark of the diver is a fantastic album..
Stevie Winwood played and sang for some very righteous bands. I love this song, you should check out Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home." Definitely worth it.
Yes!!
Steve Winwood the music man.
“I’m wasted and I can’t find my way home”
He's playing guitar on Can't Find My Way Home in a live performance with Clapton and holds his own, if not even sounding better.
@@williamhopper7873 Yes, the 2007 Crossroads show is incredible. There are videos of Steve doing Dear Mr Fantasy w/out Clapton, it's an incredible performance, one of the best I've seen. Steve is lead guitar and is very, very impressive. Another video from that show is Steve and Clapton doing I Can't Find My Way Home, which is also incredible. Both of them are some of my favorite live performances, can watch them over and over.
Steve Winwood was 14 when he started with the Spencer Davis Group. He was 16 when they had their first number one hit in England, "Keep On Running". They also did a great version of "I'm a Man". Winwood is multi instrumental, and can play almost anything, but will forever be known for his incredible voice. He moves fluidly between rock and blues. The musicians he's performed with through the years is a who's who of the music world including, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Miranda Lambert, Dave Mason, Phil Collins and many more.
Check out his work with Spencer Davis group. He was 17 playing a Hammond organ and singing with a big, distinctive voice even then.
Yes, please.
And was quoted by Nick Cohn the Best British Soulsinger oat
The man
Spencer Davis Group for sure!
YESSSSS 🙌🏽
My fave by him is the video of 70 year old Steve playing and singing “ Can’t Find My Way Home” at his estate before a roaring fire.
❤️🔥
"We went from this...to the Back Street Boys". Lol!
Not me!!!
We had GREAT MUSIC!!!!
Just to add; Steve Winwood’s (the singer) musical career is so varied thad he had an 80’s HIT duet with Chaka Khan titled “Higher Love”
YEAH!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤ Steve Winwood
Steve Winwood, a really talented musician. That look he has at the beginning of the video is legendary. I don't know what his state of mind was but he looks like he's tripping so hard he might not be able to perform. He delivers.
Great reaction! Hang on Polo m'man... Steve Winwood started playing piano at 4, by 1962 at age 14 he was backing up blues legends, first album at 16, toured until 2020.... incredible artist, incredible collaborator, with a lifetime of musical gifts to us all.
The great Steve Winwood again. This British soul man is on a level almost unparcelled. A voice that has been compared to Ray Charles, and a guy that plays about 30 different instruments, not just well, but at the highest level. One of the all-time greats. Started with "The Spencer Davis Group" at 17 years old in about1965. This man is Rock/Blues Royalty.
Thanks for playing this classic 60s song.
I had the great pleasure of seeing Traffic when they reformed in the 90’s and opened up for the Grateful Dead what a show!
Still an awesome song even 60 years later!
Steve Winwood is an undisputed musical prodigy. There is a story that as a child he would see an instrument and, with no instructions, figure out how to play it. I was not there and do not know this to be true, but it's a fun story anyway. Outside Traffic he was in other groups, collaborations, and solo work so that would be a thread to follow.
I think in Steve's case that might be a true story lol. Ridiculously talented musician.
of all his post traffic projects, my favorite was stomu yamashta's go. an ensemble that even frank zappa would pay for. stevie, klaus scultze, michael shrieve, al dimeola, pat thrall, and jerome rimson join with stevie and bandleader stomu for some amazing space rock/jazz fusion. "go, live from paris" is a must own.
Steve got to the heart and soul of music effortlessly. He was a musical savant.
Steve Winwood Is A Legendary Music Icon..A Member Of The Spencer Davis Group,, Blind Faith & Traffic As Well As A Successful Solo Career.
Stevie Winwood (vocals and guitar) is a genius. He started out on lead vocals and keyboards with The Spencer Davis Group when he was 16 or 17. I think you'll recognise some of their stuff as it's played everywhere.
Keep on Running.
Gimme Some Lovin.
I'm a Man.
All absolute classics by The Spencer Davis Group with Stevie Winwood on lead vocals and keyboard.
He started playing at age 8 in pubs his father and elder brother Muff in the Ron Atkinson Band.
Before he joined the Spencer Davis Group at age 15...he had already played (as session member) with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley on their United Kingdom tour.
"Nobody Loves You When You're Down and Out" with Spencer Davis Group is a must watch. His voice and organ work is insane for a teenager.
His voice aged well…still sounds the same @ 74 as he did early in his career.
he's a multi instrumentalist like Prince was
"Dear Mr. Fantasy," and "Mr. Fantasy" = The one and only Jimmy Hendrix. This song is a tribute to a long lost, but never forgotten, legend, amazing person, and one of the greater guitarists of all time.
Love these bands back then...Traffic, Cream, Yardbirds, etc. All blues infused early rock. Just dynamite!!!
Polo says "I think they all high". Yes sir! That's the heart of the revolution on stage. Steve Winwood has always been there.
They're all in a trance !!
Dave Mason is such an underrated guitarist.
But he left the band by then. And as great as Dave is Steve is an even better guitarist
The low spark of high heeled boys is the best jam from them!
Definitely one of my top 5 all-time favorite bands.
I was always amazed he could play that good and sing like that when he is sooo far out in the stratosphere.
Grateful Dead did a great cover of this with a Hey Jude reprise at the end.
Grateful Dead - Dear Mr. Fantasy / Hey Jude (Foxboro, MA 7/2/89)
I was just thinking that I purchased this album more than any other in my life.
LP twice, cassette tape twice, digital twice.
Yes, the group took a trip & did not leave the building.
For real Winwood has a look that says everything was just revealed to him or or oh $hit had I known it was going to be this intense he would have waited till after the performance.
Dude, you won me over when as soon as Stevie walked up to the mike you said "he doesn't look high." 😃 Traffic was one of the all-time acid eating bands, but as you could see, the musicianship was through the roof. Great reaction.
I agree! They had to be high as a Georgia pine
Hahaah. It WAS an era! We're the only ones who know exactly how it was!
Lead singer Steve Winwood is a legend. He's usually a keyboardist rather than guitarist, but he can play just about anything. Started off as a teenager in Spencer Davis Group, then Traffic, Blind Faith, and a long solo career. The way he could sing, even as a sixteen year old, is a real eye-opener. I'd recommend Traffic's "No face no name no number", Blind Faith's "Can't find my way home", SDG's "Keep on running", and his solo "Arc of a diver" to get a taste of his ability.
My first show at red rocks was Winwood opening for and occasionally joining Tom Petty. Two outstandingly professional showmen with a seemingly endless stream of hit and or amazing songs.
I saw them on the same tour - mad props to Petty in memoriam, who was respectful of the fact that *he* should have been the opener.
More Traffic, please!! Once you dive in, you'll be amazed by their sonic diversity. A few songs I'd recommend:
Glad
Rainmaker
Dream Gerard
Roll Right Stones
Light Up or leave me Alone
Heaven is in Your Mind
Great song suggestions! There's also a little known song called "Memories of a Rock N Rolla" that I really like; also like "Empty Pages."
Such a great song!!!! ❤❤❤
high and just jammin' no ego ....let it all hang out ...............love it!!!!!!
Steve Windward is multitalented. He defined our music culture . Another British rocker . His material is endless.
One of my all time favorite songs…I’m 51 & have heard that song my entire life & have never gotten sick of it ….like the Procal Harum song
You’ve got me obsessed with Grand Funk Railroad, now this! I’ve always liked this song, your subscribers are killing it!
Superb band, I started watching Stevie Winwood when he was very young with The Spencer Davis Group . His vocals are just something else.
Believe it or not the lead singer and guitarist is better known for his piano playing,
For a first time reaction, this should be the studio version.
nah, live version shows the entire vibe of the band "flying".
Traffic, Blind Faith, Spencer Davis Group! You cannot go wrong with anything Steve Winwood does!
This band criminally under-rated. And Steve is a great player, he can do it all. Good video, I haven't seen this live version! THX!!
This is rock and roll royalty early on at its raw best creating rock and roll history - realize yes and appreciate what's your privilege to be listening to
Steve Winwood is insanely talented and has been in some great bands.
Ah, Traffic! One of my college roommates introduced me to traffic. She had the greatest vinyl collection! Takes me back to the 70's. Simpler, better times IMHO.
The intro to this song was used to devastating effect opening the movie Avengers: Endgame.
My fav Traffic: The Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys
Love the bass in this thank you whoever asked for this. My original albums were stolen when I moved house 22 years ago, been so long forgot which album this was on.
I like this but I'd put the studio version on playlist.
I absolutely agree.
Yup
Ohhh lord thanks for the gift of Music, blessed us with this! 🎸 🤘
Low Spark of High Heel Boys is best overall representation of Traffic's catalog of songs as it strongly shows the Jazz influence Winwood infused into the Traffic sound. Once you hear the jazz undertone you can recognize it in most of their stuff. Winwood's white soul music
7:44 “I love the organ in the back”
Organs were used in so much of the music back in the 60’s& 70’s.
I love the feel they give to this music, so sad it’s not used today
YES!! I grew up in the 60s n 70s and I’m lovin your channel! TRAFFIC IS SPECTACULAR LIVE!! I was sooo lucky to SEE ALL these bands live!!
I think this is the Fillmore West 1972 show. One of the greatest live performances by the band that was ever recorded. Certainly not of this era. Just fantastic. Imagine though if Stevie had really wanted to be a showman and move to front and centre and just let it fly. He stayed at the back all the time and let the band play. Love to see what people from today think of those things that I started to love when it first came out. So glad I saw this,
Awesome take. Note for note this is unmatched. It's great to see others who've never known the greatness of what Classic rock brings to the table seeing performances like this and appreciating the immense talent that was.
The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys is a Must! ❤
My father introduced me to this, and then explained the genius of Stevie Winwood…after hearing it for the first time, it became one of my all time favorites. Traffics “Welcome to the Canteen” is a must listen
On the Blues song by Jimi Hendrix,Voodoo Chile(not the slight return version)That is Steve Winwood on the organ.
Low Spark of High Heeled Boys would be my recommendation for a must listen from Traffic. Dear Mr. Fantasy is a great track, live or in studio. I’m partial to their song Shanghai Noodle Factory. Love the reaction Polo.
He’s on some Serious Acid in this clip ! 😊
YES! YES! Love Traffic!
Masterpiece!! Yeah, little Stevie Winwood!
Traffic and Cream were both some of the best spawning grounds for the most amazing musicians ever
Very unique song that should be on every playlist.
Steve Winwood came from the "Spenser Davis Group .
We were all high back in the day. 😄
Haaah. I got through college majoring in the fudge factor. First time I saw Grateful Dead 1969 I was on the floor through most of it. Moody Blues took the roof off an athletic field house.
I saw them in 1970 at Fillmore East in NYC. Great band.
The Winwood guitar solo in Dear Mister Fantasi is legendary. And that's grossly understating it. High or not the dude was a prodigy and he f'i8ng knocked it out the park. That ball is still soaring.
There is several versions of this and all great in their own way including the studio version. Steve Winwood (singer and lead guitar) is incredible and was in many bands back in the day.
wow. this was one of the first cd's I ever owned right after I bought a stereo and I cranked it as loud as I could tolerate it.
that 500 mile stare is most definitely compliments of LSD my guess orange sunshine or window pane.
take a trip without leaving your chair.... good memories of days gone by.
Big Sugar crushes this song with their cover. Such a good band with BIG guitar sound.
This is better than the studio version which is a classic by itself and one of my favorites favorite Traffic songs
Major history right here....good job keeping all the cool cats alive!
As everyone before me has stated, Steve is an incredible talent. If you'd like some blue-eyed soul from him Check out Roll With It. You WON'T be disappointed
Steve Winwood us ten times the musician Clapton ever thought he was
Agree
Loved Traffic. I saw them live in the 70's. They were a fantastic band.
This. This is absolutely my favorite song from growing up 😊 tysm for the little trip!
Great music!
Bro is absolutely tripping balls I have loved this song for years
One of my all time favorites by Traffic!
You think the band was high just think about the audience!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣 So says Austin Tx!! 🤘😎🍸
Traffic was one of the bands that was liked by every body back in the day, Duke said "only two kind's of music good and the other kind".
Muscle Shoals rhythm section on drums and bass with Roger Hawkins and David Hood, respectively. I love David Hood's fingerstyle on his right hand.
Man...this was late 60's.....and yes....we were all high..........and willing to share I might add.
I just realized the lead singer is steve winwood. He was a child prodigy and started with Traffic when he was 15 (as rumor has it). He still does gigs with Santana
You've probably heard Steve Winwood before from his 80s stuff. Valerie, back in the high life again, roll with it, higher love, the finer things...he has tons of great music.
Magical. Haunting. Takes me to another dimension. Always has! To my Mr Fantacy ❤ RIP Dave😢 6/14/73 see you in the sky 🌌🌠
Yes! It was the 70s after all. Many musicians performed and lived high back then. Hallucinations were popular. Wish I had some.
First time for me hearing this song, about halfway through, said damn. Then I realized you react to videos way better than I do lmao. 😂
Ck out Low Spark of High Heeled Boys from the same show, you will love it. Studio version is cleaner though its fun to see the band and Steve Winwood plays piano.
He is Steve Winwood - the same guy who did “Higher Love” with Chaka Kahn that you loved …. Just saw him at an amphitheater in Michigan and he was still awesome- this is one of his oldie classics - check him out with Traffic - spark of high heeled boys
There are music artists and then there is Steve Winwood. He is a legend in classic rock but also other genres and had some hits in the 80s. He is a beauty
Thank you for the awesome ride in the way-back machine. I sat down to watch one of your videos this morning, and four hours later, I'm hooked and loving to hear your impressions on some of my favorite "oldies but goldies." There are several songs that I'd love to hear your thoughts on. They are as apropos in the 60s as they are to what's happening in our world today. "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield and "Four Dead in Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. The 3rd song was so controversial when it came out in 1965 it was banned on just about every radio station in the country, but the message was clear and powerful. "Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire. It continues to be relevant; change a few names in places to make it current. Thanks again for sharing the music and your thoughts!
❤ an old fav. Thank you.
