  • Why and how are some sea turtles peeling away from their usual path and heading for the coast of Mexico or California? It's a journey that should take them through waters that are normally too cold for their bodies. abc7ne.ws/3GwqW5c

Surfers have made the most of the warm waters of the Japanese Current for many decades. Crescent City on the Ca/Oregon border often has 60 degree water in winter. The turtles like all sea creatures stay in areas of water temerature that suits them. This smaller and warmer current moves with the Littoral Drift, sliding south along the west coast against the colder Humboldt Current moving north , strength and volume changing with the seasons.

I wonder if they have temperature sensors on the gps tags?
They should put them on and find more data
