- How do you know when your garlic in the backyard garden is ready to harvest? Well, it depends on the type of garlic you're growing. Elephant garlic and hardneck garlic provide some really easy signs that they're ready to harvest, but softneck garlic is a little more tricky.
Join us as we show you all three types of garlic (elephant, hardneck, & softneck) growing in our backyard garden and provide helpful tips on when to harvest. We'll harvest scapes from some of our garlic and pull the entire plant on some others.

one of the better gardening channels, especially for southerners
first time garlic home gardener and have five that made scapes so hope to pick soon.
You, sir, have a gift with gardening. Everything you set your hand to just takes off. Thanks for sharing.
The hard neck have done beautifully the two years I’ve grown them that’s all I’ve grown I put them in about Halloween and harvest about mid to late April or may all depends on the weather and how quickly they dry out…we are on Savannah Georgia… I take the scapes freeze dry them and mix with other herbs as a seasoning .
Soothing voice and lots of good info. And alright alright!
I watch two or three your videos i really like what I'm seeing so I subscribed. I enjoy the way you explained things it's easy to understand.
Welcome!
Storm last nite blew my corn plants down. Thanks to watching you, used a modified weave to stand them back up
Thanks Travis. Chuck in Jensen Beach. Wow! 44k + subscribers! Good Job Sir!
Thanks Chuck!
You made me feel pretty good about my soft neck garlic harvest. Yay.
Seed heads are delicious and look fabulous in an omelette or positions on a focaccia.
Travis, you rally want to plant all your garlic with the pointy end up if you want the best possible results. The little extea time spent doing this will greatly pay off.
Yeah I learned that the hard way this year.
dang taters looking good, corn too
I’m no expert but you definitely want to orientate the root side down and pointy side up. And give it a little shove into the soil.
Try to allow 2 or 3 scraps of the Hard Neck to grow it sets seeds in the bulb, I’ve planted some after drying it seems to be shooting here in Australia, just experiencing.
Travis, I don’t know about elephant garlic never grew it, but I do know hard neck versus soft neck hard neck doesn’t store as long eat it first
Wassup Travis. I enjoy your vlogs. I like how u stay clear of politics and such an u are a good teacher of gardening an i can tell u love your plants. I too grow elephant garlic. Have for 10-11years, I'm on my 6yr seed stock presently. An this year they are kicking, an scaping jus like yours. Im gonna try my scapes for the first i think this year, so i want to ask u or any of your lazy dog fam about how to cook em , or recipe? Ok, well keep on keeping on Trav we see u on the next one
The witches broom is because the individual cloves are trying to separate and form their own plants. Happened to so.e of mine this year too. But never before. I'm convinced the arctic blast caused it somehow
Same. My German hardneck put up one scape last year and did beautifully. This year they all have the witches broom with so many scapes. Kinda worried about the clove size now, but I like the scapes a lot in stir fry.
@@anitamurphy2454 my German garlic has done the same, many new leaves and scapes. The plant itself is huge. Last year they did not do this. Will be curious to see the results.
I wish I had left my elephant garlic in the ground longer. I was cutting the scapes and you said if it's making scapes it's done so I harvested it. But it didn't all seem to make individual cloves this year. And they aren't as big as usual. So I guess I was supposed to keep cutting scapes until the tops turn yellow? I guess I'll try to remember that next year
Mr. Lazy Dog, i am growing Elephant garlic in California Bay Area. Pretty mild temp temps currently. Some of my garlic is starting to “scape “ so i just cut them off. My questing to you is when do i stop fertilizing and watering as i prepare to harvest relatively soon. Thank you!
I had the same happen to my garlic this year. Fridge for a couple months, planted, and no stratification. Oh well, I have huge single bulbs. Cut a bit off of one and keep using during the week. Fail, but still works.
Witches brooming tends to be, for us, from new garlic varieties that are not yet well adapted to our crazy winter weather. Too hot and too cold, most years. Best way to sort that is replant from the least affected bulbs. Naturally happens, because the witches broomed ones don't store as well. Some people feel it also works better, in the long run, to use the what you called pearl cloves, or spring garlic for next years. Side benefit when it happens, is many tender, delicious scapes!
If you plant any size clove, small end up, and you don't see a green plant coming at any point, there are usually only about three reasons, in the south. Rot, which people in more rainy areas mention. Winter is our rainy season, but our raised beds don't get rot issues, or we just still are not getting as much rain vs others.
The other reason cloves either don't sprout or go missing here, is squirrels. Squirrels like certain varieties of cloves, and just dig them up to eat! I've caught them mid-crime. Had to start growing those favored varieties higher off the ground. Last is prolonged freezing after way too much hot. Which can be mitigated if you have some sort of frost tunnel that can go over them.
Thanks for all the good info!
Your advices from last year worked! I chose larger cloves, chilled them for 6 weeks, planted out in Nov. High stratification, a few are grocery-store size. Only complaint, seed price was $7/lb. Ouch 😳🤕
Anybody have any recommendations on garlic farms? Last year, our first garlic crop, we grew Korean Red Garlic from a friend's garden and from a garlic farm @ $29 a pound. The commercial garlic was okay, but didn't compare in size or taste to the friend's garlic. This year we're eating the commercial and replanting the friendly, but I'd like to have an alternate source in case of crop failure. Lessons learned: 1) remove the mulch after the ground begins to warm up to make it easier for the sprouts to grow. 2) After the ground has warmed up, return the mulch to keep the ground uniformly moist. 3) Fertilize in early spring, not early summer. 4) Have a plan in place to utilize the ground for a fall crop after the garlic harvest in July. Last year we planted on 3 Nov and harvested on 3 Jul. A good harvest, but we might have had better clove formation with earlier mulch removal and an earlier spring fertilization. Mulch was a combination of shredded leaves and straw. Still struggling with planting in mid summer. Heat and insect issues. Looking at using shade cloth and tulle. Iowa Zone 5a.

I always grow hardneck garlic. That’s not normal to grow like that. I saw another comment saying each clove is trying to grow and I think they’re right. I’d like to see how that turns out at the end. Looks pretty gnarly.
Man that elephant garlic looks like corn it is so big. I might add it to the list next year. 😊
Those hard neck garlic bulbs with multiple scapes is new to me - I have never seen bulbs with more than one scape each. If all the scapes have the flavor of normal scapes, that variety could be a huge draw at farmer's markets - where scapes are usually in high demand.
Thank you for the video. My soft neck garlic looks like yours - sideways. Soft neck is supposed to do well in GA. My hard neck has the witches broom as well. My first year growing garlic.
Well darn it, I needed to watch this BEFORE I tried to harvest my elephant garlic this morning, they weren't ready. My serious lack of patience resulted in my elephant garlic kinda looking like one big clove. Live and learn as a newbie elephant garlic grower :)
Stick with it brother. Elephant garlic is so mild an tasty an its a beautiful plant. But u said PATIENCE! is a must i would say on average here in coastal Va i plant it in Oct., It scapes in May an is ready about 4-5 weeks after that.
It's been tough this year running my Florida weave around my tomatoes. I'm growing red snapper and roadster. The plants are so thick and bushy I'm afraid of breaking branches and knocking off blooms. I've ran a 2nd row already but I think I'm going to try just wrapping the outsides of the plants from pole to pole without actually crossing back and forth. My rows are only 18' long and I have 3 poles per row. I don't think they can fall over with the row, only side to side out of the row. I think the string will be tight enough in 9 feet. So in other words I'm going to cheat on my 3rd row. If it doesn't seem like it's going to work I can add more. I may even cross over once at 4 1/2' just to be safe. Weaving in and out of a spindlier variety isn't so bad but I've never grown tomatoes like this. The stalks are as big as my thumb and the branches are as long as they are tall. About 2 1/2 ' tall. Maybe only 2 foot around. I don't think I'll ever go back to indeterminate varieties.
I just made garlic scape pesto with mine last night. Was super yummy on some grilled chicken. Thanks for the info about when the garlic is ready to harvest. So you follow how the plant looks over days in the ground?
My garlic is sad! Onions were great. Maybe next year!
Blessings!
I have had a lot of trouble with softneck. If the cold blast comes just at the wrong time, I have had softneck die or split. I have much better luck with hardneck and so I have given up on softneck. However, this year even my hardneck isn't doing too well because that arctic blast in late Decemeber pushed it way back at the worst time,
Enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing the tips on when to harvest so we all that don't know aren't pulling ours up too early. When you decide on a reputable garlic seed provider, please let us all know too.
In the past I've gotten mine from Filaree Farms online. They have a great selection and a good product. But they always sell out, so you've gotta order early.
@@LazyDogFarm thats who i went with per your recommendation...I also requested them early..they came a little early but not much...oh well..maybe next year.
@@LazyDogFarm Alright, I will give them a shot. Thanks for the info and passing on all your knowledge, much appreciated!!
Do you you think there are different varieties of Elephant Garlic? I have been growing mine for 15 years and can trace it back to a friends house in 1980's. I have heard of some Elephant Garlic found at old homestead maybe a hundred years old. I don't plant and harvest cloves. I have permanent beds in the yard and just pull up the ones that bloom. Throw some mulch on them when they die down and some fertilizer on them in October. South side of shrubs, trees, and fences works great.
I'm not aware of different varieties of elephant garlic. There may be some different strains that have been grown for a while in certain areas.
Travis your corn looks amazing! What are you giving it, because it has surly outgrown mine. I don't think my agro thrive has enough nitrogen for the corn, it's nice and green but might be a little greener for my liking, but not growing as fast as it should be.
I just side-dressed mine once with Nature Safe 13-0-0. But the chickens were on this plot quite a while throughout the winter months.
I harvest my elephant garlic after it goes to seed. Is that too late??
I wouldn't reject that soft necked variety yet. Most likely the problem is that you did not plant all the cloves pointed end up - garlic is very particular to orientation. If planted upside down or on its side, it may not even grow.
Travis, Are you doing any preventive type spraying on your tomato plants ? Thanks for the video and all the best.
Yeah we'll do some preventative fungal spraying with copper pretty soon.
@@LazyDogFarm Thanks for the reply !🍅
It wasn’t the cold my lasted here in Virginia through the winter:) it grew to soon and went through a bunch of freezing temperatures. It was probably not planting it with the point up.
Cut the scape and make pesto out of them:)
My soft neck did not do well at all. I am in south Texas.
Can you comment on weed control. I want to use some type of weed killer before the season starts but I do not want to use a weed block material. How do y’all do it. I have the ability and space to grow a lot of stuff like y’all do but need help with pre-season weed killer/killing.
Think about it from the aspect of reducing the amount of weed seeds in your soil, not necessarily the weeds themselves. That's the key to success. We use tarps to force weed seeds to germinate and then they die.
I ate my scapes...didnt see the hub bub about them.....as usual i forgot what i planted where...despite setting markers that have disappeared.. ext year im just going to record it.
I dont know why i grow garlic...dont eat hardly any and when i do i use the chopped in a jar from the store...i may not plant them next year unless its elephant garlic as that roasted is great...
Have you ever grown elephant garlic from corms? I planted some last year but they didn't come up until this spring. When should I harvest them? Am I supposed to pull them now and replant in fall or just leave them? Can't find much information on planting corms. Danny from deep south had a video I watched a long time ago but I don't think it covered that
I haven't. We always harvest all our cloves and replant the cloves each year.
What types of garlic do you grow? Let us know!

Hey Travis. Off the beaten path of this video but can you tell me where or what is the best way to get Azera and Nature safe fertilizer in bulk or at a good price.
You can find Azera online at Seven Springs Farm. They also have the Nature Safe fertilizer.
@@LazyDogFarm thanks
I planted elephant garlic this year, I keep it in the refrigerator for three months before planting, I live on Hilton Head Island SC, my garlic is starting to push out scraps, I am cutting the scraps, about how long after cutting the scraps should the garlic be ready to pick?
You'll notice the leaves will start yellowing and dying back some. Harvest it then.
All those elephant garlic that don't have scapes on them yet would have scapes by next week if you put an antenna in the ground next to them lol
Thats funny...SERIOSLY i feel he owes us a real video..
Don't throw out the bulbils - they are tasty and useful, just like the rest of the scape.
Still crazy how I live east of atlanta and our weather has been nowhere near as nice as yours.
My softneck garlic did the witches broom thing, too. I thought it was due to too much water or fertilizer or something. The information on the interwebs about this is unclear.
Travis, as you pull more out, you're likely to find some that look like George Washington's teeth.
Thats rather disturbing
Pickle those scapes or make some garlic scape pesto!
uhhh yea of course it matters which direction you planted
Pickle those scapes.
Those are scapes on the hard neck garlic
What is your mulch here in your garden?
On those determinate toms..my are already 5 foot tall with tons of toms on april 15!!..on may 6 they are so bushy i cant go down the rows..and cant do the string...so there they are..i have NO IDEA WHAT TO DO WITH THEM...THEY ARE MONSTERS. MY SQUIRRELS ARE GONNA FEEL LIKE THEY ARE IN HEAVEN.. THEY ARE ALREADY FAT AS HELL...MAN I HATE SQUIRRELS
Looks like you lost some weight.
