- My attempt at Normal Shelling Gunlance against AT Velkhana since I couldn't find any videos.

The fight starts off quite badly but picks up after 1:53. It's not a great run by any means, and I am currently working on a better run.
The purpose of this run is to demonstrate two things:
1. Although Slap Lance is the most efficient and popular way to go in this fight, Full Burst is quite viable and has many openings you can exploit.
2. To demonstrate the use of the WSB loading Guard Point to place your WSB on the fly (see 4:04).
Normal Shelling is my favourite playstyle and I wanted to demonstrate its solo viabilty against AT Velkhana. A lot of folks prefer not to use Full Burst against her because of how fast her tail stabs come out, and I completely agree. To be honest, Full Burst against AT Velkhana is not a smooth experience and it is near impossible to perform a clean, flawless run this way. This is because after every Full Burst, the Gunlancer is left completely open for 1.950 seconds and thus has an extremely high chance of receiving a tail stab to the face.
To make things even more difficult, the Gunlancer is faced with the hectic game of slinger ammo management throughout the hunt. After every flinch shot, the Gunlancer must search for and replenish their slinger ammo from the ground in order to plant a full-duration WSB on Velkhana. This is essential because of how long the fight is - a half-filled WSB after a flinch shot will deplete after around two minutes into the fight and will cause a headache replacing it.
As undesirable as all these points sound, I still wanted to do the run. Call me crazy, sadistic, misguided, anything you want - I love Full Burst and decided to eat whatever tail stabs come my way and brute-force the run. In this run, I demonstrate the slinger ammo and WSB management against a fight that would easily go into the 7-10 minute range. I expected to be making huge armour skill sacrifices just to make this run possible - and to my relief - I was able to complete it in Area 1.
This build consists of Artillery 5, Guard 5, Evade Window 5, Handicraft 4 and Slinger Capacity 1. I know what you're thinking - that's a disastrous build! Why do you need both Guard and Evade Window?!
Let me defuse your hostility by establishing that the only reason for Guard 5 is to allow me to place the WSB during Velkhana's Ice Rings. Against normal Velkhana, you can easily place the WSB with Guard 1 using the loading Guard Point during her Ice Wave, which inflicts a Small Knockback. Against Arch-Tempered Velkhana, however, the Ice Wave quickly becomes Aura 2 and inflicts a Medium Knockback, so you can no longer take advantage of the Guard Point. Thus, the Ice Rings were the next best opening to place the WSB - they inflict Small Knockback with Guard 5.
In designing this hunt, I realized that in order to successfully slay Velkhana before she flies at 7:3x, you have to land the Wyrmstake Cannon on every topple; placing the WSB during a topple is a huge damage loss that will ultimately slow down the hunt. After much deliberation I decided that Guard 5 was worth the investment to allow me to capitalize on every topple with WSC, and proceeded to place one WSB halfway through the fight during Velkhana's Ice Rings. This is a huge investment for one WSB, I know, but it turned out to be better than using Slinger Capacity 5.
Artillery, Evade Window and Handicraft were included as per the standard Gunlance build, since we all know that blocking is inefficient and Full Burst eats through sharpness. Slinger Capacity 1 is included just in case I can't find a new pile of slinger ammo after a flinch shot and have to fill the WSB with 5 measly stones.
This run definitely has lots of room to improve, and you can tell my confidence is nowhere near as high as it was in my other video showcasing Schinkikami's Reworked Gunlance (Light) against AT Velkhana. That run is almost identical to this one except Schinkikami geniously implemented Guard Points after Full Burst, where the shield is visibly in front of the character. In that video you'll see that the FB Guard Point saved me from a grand total of seven tail stabs throughout the hunt and ultimately shaved one minute off the hunt. This is truly a blessing to normal Shelling Gunlancers and it's hard to imagine life without it now.
Finally, here are the mods I used:
- Daily Food Skills Utility to ensure Felyne Booster is triggered
- No other mods or overlays.

I am looking into implementing your shelling changes to make a speedrun with more combos than just Full Burst, for example Poke-shell during small openings and Full Burst during large openings. It will need lots of practice and perhaps even a new monster. Keep in touch 😄
I’ll be honest even I gave up on the gp when the full game came out. It was too niche and required too much thinking to apply it to every monster. Great job showcasing this tech against one of the hardest monsters in the game and glad to see you alive👍
Gun lance is one of the easiest weapons for early game.
I don't even know what on earth are you talking about. Great sword, long sword and bow (other popular choices) are way harder.

@@iluvatarchem i gave up on using the gp( meaning guard point in case you dont understand because youre new to the game) when the full game came out. The full context is that i made a gunlance guardpoint guide showcasing this tech during iceborne demo (video in the run description) but didnt think this was very useful when the dlc officially came out🤷🏻♂️. I was glad that it was showcased well in this run.

This is still undefeated 3 years later. We managed to achieve faster time by playing "Lancer style" with Offensive Guard, meanwhile this actual Lancer shows us how to stick to our GUNCE. The role reversal is too good. Love the stylish "counter thrust wyrmstake blast" btw, and you're still a mad lad for figuring out how to full burst that thing.
Would love to see your take on the "Lancer style" if you're up for it, Lancer doing "Lancer style" on a Gunlance sounds like all kinds of fun.

i might be wrong but this is the only video i saw that has slain Velk using a Normal Shelling gunlance. its usually Wide because its just difficult to land a burst.

Any chance you might try a wide GL? The full burst is still strong and the quick poke - shell - shell combo is quite strong depending on your WSB placement. Would love to see you run it.
Some would say I'm a Velkhana enthusiast! I really need to begin practicing against other monsters. It's nice how AT Velkhana arrived after Fatalis, so using Fatalis gear against her for speedruns is normal. Using Fatalis gear against pre-Fatalis monsters for speedruns easily beats the top 3 spreedruns on mhwleaderboards.com and makes me feel kinda bad.
About Wide Gunlance, that's definitely an option! Unfortunately, my Wide skills are severely lacking and I will need many, many hours of practice with it before I can confidently use it even in casual hunts. Even worse, it is quite a bit behind the other Gunlance combos at 6th place for DPM (out of 7th place) and still uses Lightbreak Gunlance. This means it will be hard to use Wide GL to compete against Normal and Slap Gunlance in speedruns unless the fight greatly prefers Wide Shelling (e.g., Rajang). I will definitely consider it against those matchups, though!
Another thing I would try is using Schinkikami's Reworked Gunlance to incorporate both the Wide and Normal playstyle during hunts. In other words, using both Poke-shell and Full Burst with the help of his genius shelling modifications. This could make for some very interesting and unique gameplay!

Awesome run, also is it faster to quick reload into smash for full burst rather than just Rising slash smash into full burst? Cause at certain moments like 6:39 you reload-smash-burst rather than just rising slash-smash-burst despite being at full ammo, im not sure if this is actually faster or just a tiny error, cause I do see other gunlance speed runners do this too
it is faster , slightly faster , also you get less animation lock which allow you to cancel it with a dodge where as using rising you're stuck in that animation for long and can get hit. Like basically you can dodge after the first attack , then after reload instead of only being able once after rising.

Don't be discouraged, Zeraiyah-I was only able to pull off some of those dodges because I had Evade Window 5 equipped. I reckon if you put on Evade Window as well, you would be able to perform the same dodges. I think you'll discover a new confidence within yourself when you try it out!

how do you dodge the ice puddles at 4:14 and 6:59? you are literally at the EDGE of the ice puddle and then choose to full reload like a madman.
That is pure experience, anyone can do that if they fight Velkhana enough times. The run in general is impressive AF but that part isn't something special, just experience.
Sorry for the late reponse! I was away from this channel for quite a while, and just got back into the game. AJDC is totally right, it's just from pure experience! It will come with time.
In general, one of the Gunlance's extended backhop (left stick pointing backward after performing an action) plus Evade Extender 2 is enough to safely evacuate you from the ice puddle if you are at or behind its centre. If you are past the centre, you should hop forward or to the side to safely evacuate it. Keep practising it and you'll get it!

As a matter of fact, I primarily play the Lance as well! You can find videos of me using the Lance on my channel. In particular, my AT Velkhana videos have lots of hop dodges, both for positioning and evasion purposes. I hope they help you, khhnator.
how do you not get affected by the icy ground? when i take gunlance the ground immobilizes me and ofc i get 1 shot right after.

Yo how do you sharpen in one go?
You can either get armor or use decorations that give you speed sharpening( max up to lvl 3). Or you can use Great Whetfish fin+( there is an event quest in master rank you can use to farm them easily)

aside from the one commenting about the skill, our guy here used a Whetfish Fin+ for a faster sharpen. he basically didnt use any skill, just whetfish
can the game transmog change weapon appearence?
at the smithy augment the just oto layered there u can change apererance tempered monster in guiding gives u ther transmog for all weapons
U need to do certain event mission or reach end game content area, the guiding land, and hunt the monsters there. Then the forge layered armor option will be unlocked depends on what monster you have hunted.
Pretty sure you have to unlock tundra area.
